ount on shedding some tears during the flag-raising ceremony Monday at the Del Norte County Veteran’s Memorial Point of Honor. You’ll be in good company. Kelly Schellong has worn
many hats since coming to Crescent City in 1991: as a Crescent City Council member, mayor, sales manager at Bicoastal Media, an Army mom. “Other than having my son, completing the monument is in the top-five proudest moments of my life,” Schellong said.
“It’s really a good feeling, when you can do something to honor a group of people who have made such an impact on your country and community. To know you were a part of that, is pretty special.” After a decade of work by a veterans committee to get the monument approved, Schel-
long was asked to step in and spearhead fundraising efforts. She said that through events small and large, raffles, concerts, dinners and live auctions (one was hosted by State Sen. Mike McGuire as guest auctioneer that brought in $40,000), the committee’s coffers grew to about $175,000.

rescent City Police closed a portion of Second Street at 11:30 a.m. Thursday after a suspicious device was found at the Redwood National and State Parks office. A tool box that had fallen off a truck Wednesday on U.S. Highway 101 had been taken to the state parks office on Second Street. When the staff inventoried the box’s contents the following morning, they found a gadget that prompted evacuation of the building as a safety precaution. “They thought it was a possible explosive device inside of it, so we set a perimeter,” said Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin.

n a crisp fall morning, in the not-quite-light of pre-dawn, men in waders gathered to seine for fish at Huntley Park on the Rogue River, about 7 miles up Jerrys Flat Road out of Gold Beach. Several of the men are from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). Their companions are are a hardy group of volunteers, fishermen who belong to Curry Anadromous Fishermen. They’re there to count fish … yet again. They count the fish three times a week from

ith seven freezers full of pies, nine crockpots of stewing soup, and Christmas decor galore, it’s once again time for Grace Lutheran Church’s annual Christmas bazaar. Crescent City’s branch of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will host its annual Christmas
bazaar, complete with 254 pies, to welcome the community and fundraise this Saturday. “Everybody’s invited. Our goal is to spread the love of Jesus, to let everyone know about the love of Jesus, their Lord and Savior,” said Marilyn Munz, the bazaar’s organizer. Transitional home said to make a difference in its first year G

illian Boldt wasn’t religious. She went to the jail’s church service as an excuse to get out of her cell, she said. Little did she know she’d meet a woman who would change her life there. Lynn’s Hope House of New Beginnings, founded and run by Daphane Williams, is a faith-based transitional home for women coming out of jail. September marked the home’s first year of operation. With one client successfully through the program, Lynn’s Hope House of New Beginnings seemingly has had a fruitful first year. After sleeping in her car, having her child taken away and desperately awaiting her next dose of drugs, Boldt said she felt exhausted and hopeless. The night she planned to take her life, she was arrested and sent to the Del Norte County Jail. “I had no reason, nothing, to live for,” Boldt said. “I was done.”
While incarcerated, she met Williams, who visits the county jail weekly as a minister. Boldt applied for entry into Hope House and in December 2018 became Williams’s first client. For seven months, Boldt stayed with Williams in the quaint house adjacent to Crescent City’s First Baptist Church. She spent five evenings a week participating in the home’s Seeking Safety program, which teaches coping and self-help skills. Each Saturday was spent in free time crafts, sewing or a movie night. On Sunday, church was required. Almost a year after enrolling at the house, Boldt’s life looks much different from the night she considered suicide. She said she’s no longer drug-dependent, has found a faith of her own and has her child back. “[It] saved my life. I mean, I had nothing, nowhere to go,” Boldt said. “In the short time that I was here, you know, I got my life back.”

She said the home is unlike any other sober-living transitional facility in Crescent City. Williams, who has spent 12 years as a social worker and 13 as a minister for the jail, is committed to seeing her clients succeed, said Boldt. Williams said that while ministering at the jail, she saw the same women returning time and time again. “[I thought], somebody needs to do something about it. (But) not me. No, really, not me. “As I talked to dif-
ferent ones in the community, no one seemed interested. So, I was like, ‘Oh, really? Well, I guess it’s me then.’” After coming to terms with her calling, she applied for nonprofit status in 2015. Through a friend, she discovered that First Baptist Church of Crescent City was renting out the house on their property. She and the church reached agreement – they would rent to her if she fixed up the house. From October 2015 on, Williams, her husband and two volunteers spent
every Saturday cleaning, repairing and repainting the home. For three years, Williams said, she prayed about when to leave her job as a social worker to begin Hope House. In 2018, she said, she heard the voice of God telling her now was the time. One year later, the house has saved a life. And, Williams said, she wants to thank the community members who assisted in the home’s success. “I want to get it out to the community that we really appreciate what
they have done for us up to this point,” Williams said. “I just want to make sure they know we don’t just take this for granted, all that they have done.” Now, said Williams, she’s hoping to hire paid staff to assist her. That would allow more women – a limit of six at a time – to experience the benefits of the close-knit recovery home. “We’re a 24-hour facility,” Williams said, “so it’s just finding those grants and what other kind of funding so we can have full staff. Then, we can have full clients.”

Slowly, the boat makes a big loop up and across the river and then downstream, letting the netting out as the craft circles the fishing hole and heads back to shore. There, a four-wheeldrive truck has backed into the water. A 40-foot rope attached to the net is fastened to the truck’s tow hitch, and the truck races forward to tighten the net quickly. The volunteers grab that side of the net and remove the rope from the hitch. The truck then backs up to the rock where the other end is tied off with another length of rope, and again races forward with the net attached to the tow ball, tightening the other side and closing the loop. Then comes the physical labor of hauling in the net with hand-overhand “humanpower” - without letting any of the fish escape. The net itself weighs about 300 pounds, wet (even more, with fish in it). As the circle of the net is tightened, a fish can be seen darting and splashing across the surface. It’s a coho salmon - a federally protected species - so it’s gently lifted over the side of the net and released. “In August, we had 80 fish in the net, including half-pounders,” said ODFW lower Rogue seining crew leader Andrew Wells. “The largest set I’ve personally seen was around 200 fish: 50 Chinook and a bunch of half-pounders.” The men straighten out the netting and begin to fold it back onto the cowling of the boat, shaking out any sticks and rocks and preparing to seine the hole again. The next net of fish this day yielded two coho and a big Chinook salmon. “Oh, she got me right in the knee,” said one of the ODFW crew. “I didn’t see anything and all of a sudden she smacked me.” “A mini-rodeo,” a volunteer said, as the fish thrashed and splashed.

Turns out it was a 770-mm (30.33 inch) fish, ripe with roe. “Thought she looked kind of round,” Lindquist said. “I’m sick and tired of you slapping water in my face,” Wells said, as they measured and tagged the fish. Then she was loaded into a rubber sleeve, called a boot, and placed into a waiting, specialized fish transport truck. She would become No. 42 of the salmon that have made the journey this year to Indian Creek Hatchery, which raises about 90,000 fish annually to be released at the mouth of Indian Creek in the Rogue River estuary. The men gathered the net once again, loaded it onto the boat and repeated the process. They would do so 15 times this day, the same as all the other days this season and over the years dating back to 1977 - when they first standardized the process for how many pulls and the time of day they do them. “We were seeing a pattern where the fish were moving more in the morning,” Wells said. “We start right at ‘legal daylight,’ start setting the net, and we do 15 sets. Work until we’re done, work up all the fish we’ve looked at. Coho, adult summer steelhead, half-pound
summer steelhead, and fall Chinook salmon, as they make their migration upriver. “The project is cemented in the Rogue Fall Chinook Management Plan adopted in 2013 by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission,” Wells said. “The numbers that are generated every day get posted on the website. “Every week, we do an expansion to basically estimate how many total fish in the four species we track. We are only out there for two to three minutes, and can only capture so many before we have to bring the net in.” The numbers are plugged into a calculus formula, with brackets that account for flow, and the crew estimates the escapement of these specific freshwater fish that are going upriver. Monitoring them informs a variety of management decisions from year to year, Wells said. While the numbers this year aren’t as good as last year for Chinook salmon, at roughly just over half, Wells says they are starting to see the 10-year average go up. “A couple of factors may be playing at that. Ocean conditions and dam removal in the main stem of the Rogue River could be influencing that. But we don’t really know until we get a little bit more data,”
he said. Meantime, the Chetco River was seined Oct. 29 at Social Security Bar for the purpose of capturing brood stock to travel to the Elk River Hatchery. A group of around 40 people, including Tim Buehler’s science class at Brookings-Harbor High School, showed up either to help or to watch. Everyone wanted to see what fish the seining would find. Unfortunately, the fish had other plans that day, with only a handful of jack salmon and a cutthroat trout appearing. While jack salmon do spawn, they were not needed for brood stock. So, no fish caught a ride to the hatchery. Seining the river this year presented some challenges, given a large snag lodged at the top end of the hole. On the second and final run, the net caught on that snag. The ODFW’s Wells waded and then swam out to free the net. Although the agency’s workers had come prepared, wearing drysuit types of waders, it still looked almost like a polar swim in the chilly morning air. And most important to the designers, a wall dedicated to those from Del Norte County and Crescent City who were killed in action. The monument was finally completed and formally presented to the community in a July dedication ceremony at Front Street and U.S. Highway 101. Schellong becomes emotional, recalling the reactions since. “It’s been amazing, heartwarming,” she said, pausing to collect herself. “I’ve been down there when veterans will be just standing there and they come up to me and say, ‘You don’t understand how much this means to me.’ Members of our committee have seen veterans down there crying. “When we did the ground-
breaking, there was an older gentleman, a pilot in Vietnam, he came over to me and said this is honoring the guys that he lost. “It’s a monument, but it means so much more to the veterans who fought to protect our country.” One of those veterans, former Police Chief Doug Plack, spearheaded the effort to track down the names of local military members killed in action. “We felt it was extremely important to identify individuals who died in the line of duty from Crescent City and Del Norte County, or who lived here a significant amount of time,” Plack said. “This was an opportunity for us to tell veterans that our community holds the veterans in high regard who sacrificed their time in the military.” A Coast Guard member from 1970-74, Plack enlisted help from the Crescent City Veterans of Foreign Wars, Daughters of the American Revolution, the U.S. Veterans Administration and Karen Betlejewski of the Historical Society.

Speaking with Plack by phone, his emotions were plain to hear as he talked about community reaction to the monument. “The response has been tremendous. One time when I drove by, I saw a woman walk
up to the Army obelisk, place her hand on it and bow her head. It was very moving. “I can’t help but think it’s sacred land. It gives them a door to their loved ones while representing the troops still fighting,” Plack said. Still, he feels the monument is incomplete, knowing the committee has missed names on the Killed in Action wall. OBITUARIES Norma M Blancher June 8, 1928 - October 31, 2019
Norma M Blancher, 91, a longtime resident of Crescent City for more than 32 years went to be with the Lord on October 31, 2019. She was born at home in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1928. She spent her early years in Kenosha and attended Catholic schools. The youngest of five children (siblings Jeanette Egger, Edward Neward, Alice Johnson and Ted Neward) she was born to Mary and Ignacz Neward, both immigrants of Lithuania Her brother, Ted, encouraged her to move to Southern California to continue her education. She attended Compton Jr College and went on to UCLA where Norma met Gaylen Blancher. After a quick courtship, they were married and
moved to Los Angeles, CA. With the birth of their first daughter Adrienne, they moved to West Covina. Daughter number two Marianne came along and Galen’s career took them to Dallas, Boston, Nashville before returning to Southern California for over 40 years. Upon her retirement, from Bank of America they settled and relocated to beautiful Crescent City. Norma was an active volunteer at Sutter Coast Hospital Auxiliary where she worked in the gift shop. Additionally, Norma was an active member of the Crescent City Women’s Club, Garden Club and Del Norte Republicans Group. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bridge in numerous groups in Crescent City and Brookings, with evenings spent knitting, sewing and reading. In retirement, they were blessed to travel the USA, Europe and her dream vacation of going to Egypt. Norma was a loving wife of Gaylen (deceased) Blancher for 46 years. Each year, the league raises funds for local charities and overseas missions. At some point in the 1990s, someone had an idea … make and sell pies. Beginning in the summer when berries were ripe, women from the church gathered to make pies, bag them, freeze them, then sell them. They made 80 pies that year. “We have a good time. It’s good camaraderie,” Munz said. “We just coming together, we spend that time in the summer making the pies and fretting over all of that. We just enjoy getting all together. I think we become closer.” Since then, it has grown aplenty. From July until October of this year, eight women met for pie making - each time producing 30 to 35 - until they totaled 254 pies. Businesses and community members donated nearly all of the fruit, so the church needed only to purchase peaches. Apple, peach rhubarb, blackberry and strawberry rhubarb pies will be for sale for $7 each. “I’ve appreciated the people who have picked the fruit and brought the fruit in. That’s a really big help,” Munz said. “That’s neat, to feel that camaraderie within the community of people who want to share.” Along with the pies, people have donated handcrafted items, seasoned salts, items for a drawing, and jams and jellies to be sold at the bazaar.

John Pritchett running for Del Norte County Board of Supervisors post ohn Pritchett, a 28-year resident of Del Norte County, has announced will seek the District 1 seat on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors. The election will be March 3, 2020. Pritchett is the longtime general manager of Del Norte Ambulance and before that, served as editor of The Daily Triplicate for 8 1/2 years in the 1990s. For the past nine seasons, he has served as the play-by-play voice of the Del Norte High School Warriors on KPOD Radio. Pritchett, 58, said wants to bring civility back to the board of supervisors, as well as focus on Del Norte County issues. “I’m about building bridges, not burning them,” Pritchett said. The creation of a Last Chance Grade bypass is a top priority on Pritchett’s list. He believes Del Norte County must keep the pressure on state and federal officials. “Unfortunately, the District 1 voice is no longer heard in Washington, D.C., in Sacramento, and even in the Flynn Center,” Pritchett said. “I already have good relationships with State Sen. Mike McGuire and Assemblyman Jim Wood. I have met with U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman on numerous occasions. By working with other elected leaders, rather than against

County government has to find ways to support these efforts, not to discount or belittle them.” It is also important, Pritchett said, not to link all homeless individuals with those who are breaking the law. “We have to give local law enforcement the tools needed to fight the property crime problem, the lewdness problem,” Pritchett said. “But at the same time, we must remember that most homeless individuals and families are not criminals. The school district reports that about 150 students are classified as homeless. These are not ‘human refuge,’ as some have called them. The women and children escaping from domestic violence and living at Harrington House, they are not human refuge. The veteran who is dealing with issues most of us can’t imagine, they are not human refuge.” Pritchett also wants
to see more economic development in the community. He noted that former District 1 supervisors Jack Reese and Leslie McNamer were strong supporters of building Del Norte’s infrastructure and creating local jobs. “I want to follow in Jack’s and Leslie’s footsteps,” Pritchett said. “We need to invite new businesses to our community. “We may have to look at tax breaks or other incentives, but the more solid our economic foundation, the better we will be able to fund law enforcement, social services and road repairs.” Pritchett also said he is a strong supporter of the local Chamber of Commerce. “That’s our front door to both new companies, and to tourists from around the world.” Pritchett said he has served on the Del Norte County Planning Commission, Del Norte Fish and Game Advisory Committee, United Way, the FEMA board, the Crescent City/Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce and numerous other groups. In 2018, he was named by the governor to the 41st District Agricultural Association, also known as the Del Norte Fair Board. And Pritchett is a two-time president of the Crescent City Rotary Club, as well as a longtime member of its board of directors.

ome two dozen Del Norte fans bundled in blankets and lawn chairs as they watched the local high school boys soccer team take on McKinleyville High School on Wednesday. Above the field, a weathered blue sign read, “Home of the Warriors.” The Del Norte High School boys soccer team played its first home playoff game since 1995, losing 1-0 to the McKinleyville High School Panthers. After losing to Fortuna High School 3-2 in the North Coast Section finals last year, the Warriors hoped to advance to the finals again this season, but fell to the Panthers in a tense first game of the playoffs. “A lot of the returning players from that team are on this team, so they’re kind of hungry in a way.
