ou’ve seen those bikes with the big balloon-looking knobby tires. Why would someone ride a bike like that? Here’s why … Meet the fat-tire bike. Before making their way to Oregon and the coast, the bikes were very popular in Colorado. They even have a beer label named for them. The fat bikes originally were developed in Alaska a number of years ago for riding in the snow on the Iditarod routes. Which is what makes them perfect for riding in the sand - as on California and Oregon beaches - according to Erin Kessler, owner of Pineapple Express Adventure Rides in Port Orford. “I like getting off the road,” Kessler said. “We’ve got great beaches. We live in a place where we can just access the beach, and we’ve got all these public lands and everything.” The Pilot caught up with Kessler at Live Culture Coast on Oct. 25 to find out more about the bikes - including trying one out. hile some 300 firefighters from around Oregon are helping battle raging wildfires in California, fire crews from Curry County will not be part of that effort, according to Brookings Fire Operations Chief Jim Watson. Watson said he’s coordinating training for fire service operations in Curry County that could be sent to other areas of the county when additional manpower would be needed. He expects that training and certification to be completed in several months. “Right now, because of our dynamics, we do not have the needed strike team leaders for such assisting teams, but we are in the process of getting the necessary training and certification,” he said. “Two years ago, we entered into a plan to accomplish that.” More Fires on Page A3

n Fat tire Continued from Page A1 “It takes a bit to get going, but they float over the sand,” Kessler said. “It’s like a snowshoe, and floats over the surface. You can have less air pressure with the bigger platform of a tire, creating a wider surface.” The gearing is pretty easy, making them also good for mountain trail rides, towing trailers and taking longer excursions, she said. “They’re really stable,” she said. “They are very good for older riders, who may not have perfect balance, and you ride upright like a mountain bike.” The upright posture is more comfortable for most riders compared to the street bikes that predated mountain bikes, which are also upright. The fat bikes turned out to ride exactly as Kessler had said: easy to pedal but hard to get started, especially with the slightly inclined slope of the parking lot where she was set up. The ride was surprisingly smooth, though, especially considering the knobby tires and stiff frame, even when going over speed bumps set up in the parking lot. The bikes Kessler brought to her event last week are from Fatback Bikes of Alaska. They were one of the first fat bikes on the market, she said. The company offers several models; Kessler carries the Fatback Rhino FLT, which is a stiff, lightweight bike with an aluminum alloy frame. (For those irritated
by acronyms, FLT stands for Fast Light Technology.) The tires are 26-inches tall by 4.8-inches wide, and can run with as little as 3 pounds of pressure, although Kessler keeps her rental bikes at around 8 psi. The wider tires provide more traction, allowing the bikes to handle snow, mud, sand, rocks and roots. The frames are wider, especially built to accommodate the wider wheel size. The fat bikes in Kessler’s rental fleet come with a variety of gearing configurations, ranging from 1 x 10 to 1 x 11 and 1 x 12. The 1x configuration eliminates having multiple gears on the front hub, so there’s no front-gear shifting and less maintenance. Sand is not a friend to bicycle gears, however. “I spend a lot of time maintaining these bicycles,” she said. “They get new chains every season. I’m constantly lubing everything and getting sand out of the nooks and crannies. I try to keep them in
good working order for each rental. It’s very time consuming.” Kessler, who started her company in 2017, offers guided tours and bike rentals with both mountain and fattire bikes. She has tours for all levels of experience, with rides from Bandon down to Gold Beach. Customers can also arrange rental bike dropoffs and shuttle services. She sells new Fatbackbrand bikes at $2,000, but also sells rental bikes at the end of the season for $900. Not all fat bikes sell for as much as the Fatbacks, which are considered a pro model in the industry. At Live Culture Coast, Sophie Traub and Eliot Feenstra of Toronto, Canada heard about the opportunity and decided to take a beach ride from the Port of Gold Beach to Kissing Rock, just south of town. Neither of them had ever ridden a fattire bike. “I’m so excited,” Traub said. Feenstra was also looking forward to the ride. “I’ve

When I heard that a 16-year-old Scandinavian girl was crossing the ocean in a sailboat to speak at the United Nations Climate Summit, my first thought was, “Who is this girl?” My second thought: “It must be Greta Thunberg!” Nor is it surprising to hear that every city has scores of Gretas, and whole groups of high schoolers and middle schoolers who wish to educate us on climate change. They are trying to visualize a future with big changes coming. And to get us ready for change. Weather Service in Medford, the fire danger conditions in Curry County are expected to last for several more days. “It doesn’t look like there will be any rain through next Thursday, because there is a pretty substation area of high pressure situated along the West Coast blocking any rain systems coming in,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Spilde. “That ridge is deflecting systems into Alaska and then down into the midsection the nation.”
Spilde said the current dry weather pattern is a bit unusual. “It is unusual in the fact that it is so dry and it has lasted so long,” he said. “The last time we saw significant rainfall along the southern Oregon coast was on Oct. 19.” Spilde said that eventually, the high-pressure ridge will break down. “But when it does, the first system to come through is often weak. So, there is a better chance of rainfall into the weekend and the following week.”
Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate from several wildfires burning in California this week. Hundreds of structures have been destroyed by the flames. The fires have been fanned by hurricane-force winds. The National Weather Service issued an extreme red-flag warning for parts of
central and southern California because of the dangerous conditions. Fifteen strike teams consisting of members of Oregon’s fire service arrived in California on Oct. 27 and have been assigned to assist with a variety of wildfire incidents threatening structures and property.

Artist’s cairns draw interest in Gold Beach Linda Pinkham Staff Writer
Artist Jen Fuller’s art installation “Between” received rave reviews while on display recently in Gold Beach. The temporal installation stayed in a state of perpetual creation commencing a couple of weeks ago. Each day, more monolithic driftwood sculptural pieces - enhanced with glass, metal and ceramic adornments - were added. “I had originally pitched doing seven cairns, but it has now evolved during my time here to doing 25, and is expanding rapidly,” Fuller said. “This is a unique installation for me, in that I am sourcing materials from the site itself to build it, which is all the driftwood.” In her artist’s statement, Fuller explains the work: “An edge environment is the place where two ecosystems collide, in this case where urban and nature meet. ‘Between’ is an immersive, curiositydriven sculpture installation designed to emphasize things that lay between and provides a temporary experience of placemaking.
“There is a space here between urban and natural. People are stumbling on them accidentally during their normal routines. They experience this forced perspective where they have to engage with the project. That’s why I chose this location, because I wanted to do temporary placemaking where people couldn’t avoid it.” The work succeeded at being immersive, as curious residents and travelers came by to see what Fuller was doing and to ask questions about the work during its 10 days of installation. “It was a gentle, word-of-mouth process,” she said. “When I first started, I was out here in the pouring rain and people were driving around me in circles and they were going, ‘What the …?’ “It took them two days to really see the project starting to come up out of the ground, encouraging people to slowly start getting out of their cars, inquiring about what I was up to and starting to interact. “Once people started seeing the glass was happening, and when the weather shifted, they started talking to
each other as more and more people started showing up.” More than 100 people had interacted with the artist before the last weekend, Oct. 26-27, when Travel Oregon’s Live Culture Coast, which sponsored the installation, focused on the southernmost reaches of the Oregon coast with events centered in Gold Beach and Brookings. Locally, social media channels were flooded with photos of the installation. The play of light on the glass objects changed constantly throughout the day, and visitors with cameras sought to capture how the light interacted. “It was then that I just wanted to make something that was a record of my time here,” Fuller said, “and more importantly my interaction with people during my stay. That’s why I started the community cairn.” People interacting with the artist were invited to choose a marble or another object of their own to embed in an upright driftwood cairn containing an uncanny keyhole at the top that framed the remainder of the exhibit.

mation specialist. “I love it. How fun!” Frisbee said, as they chose marbles or trinkets of their own to add to a sculpture that will be installed permanently at the Gold Beach Visitor Center. The installation artwork was dismantled Sunday

Beaman decided 10 years ago to start Brookings United, a young players’ soccer team. “I noticed that when the high school teams got into playoffs, they had a hard time with the more aggressive, quicker and physical soccer style,” he said. “So, when the kids are smaller, they can better prepare for the game. “And Brookings United was a good way to get them used to traveling and seeing the other teams.” Over the years, Beaman said, that plan has paid off and triggered more player interest in the game. “Younger brothers and other athletes wanted to be part of the high school team,”

They put a virtual lock on the district title Oct. 10 with a 2-0 home win over Umpqua Valley Christian (11-3, 10-3). “The biggest setback the team has encountered came Sept. 24 when sophomore forward Bryan Valdovinos suffered a broken leg against Sutherlin. “’He’s a big loss for us,’” Jess Beaman said. “’He’s just that invisible player. You can’t really tell what he does for us, but when he’s gone, it’s a little bit different style for us to score. He usually put it right on somebody’s foot to score.’” Beaman told The Pilot he doubts Valdovinos will be available for the playoff games. As the boys’ team prepares for the state playoffs, Beaman said, the focus is a back-to-basics formula. “To be successful, it takes all 12 players on the field to work and to play together and to trust each other,” he said. “We just need to keep doing that.” Trust among players is critical, according to Beaman. “That trust began with our players in the fourth and fifth grades,” he said.

“While you’ll hear other teams doing much talking during the games, our players are pretty quiet. They move and know where to be and know where each other is on the field. It’s a mental thing. They are ready to go and they trust each over.” On the sidelines, you’ll see Beaman often talking with individual players. “Some things I think I overcoach, because they are doing the right thing,” he said. “I am there to keep them motivated, cheering them up, keeping their confidence up. And I let them all know they are doing a great job out there.” That said, “We also are supportive of the girls’ soccer team and hope they do well with their run to state. We also want to thank the community and the parents for their support of both teams.” Beaman has been the Brookings-Harbor boys’ varsity soccer coach for three years, following five years as coach of the junior varsity team. GIRL’S TEAM EVERY BIT AS GOOD The Lady Bruin girls’ soccer team is also heading into playoff action next week. Under coach Kyla Siri, the team is 9-0-1 in league play and 12-1-1 overall, having amassed an impressive 36 field goals while allowing only 9-against. “We had a very similar season to last year, and we expected to be a dominant team,” Siri said. “Our team matched up in competition and we were very well disciplined. I’m impressed with the way they battle other teams.” As good as they are,

Siri said, the team is still young. “We are a work in progress,” she said. “We lost an entire midfield from last year with graduation, and had to replace the midfield.” Siri said the team’s chemistry is similar to the high school boys’ team. “Some of the girls have played recreational soccer and club soccer together, so the more you play with someone, the more you can predict their play,” she said. Like Beaman, Siri said that trust among the players is a key element to their success as a whole. “When you can trust your teammates to back you up and make decisions, you have a powerful team right there, no matter what your skill level is.” By strengthening each player’s skills, Siri said the team’s level of play has improved overall. The girls team captured the league championship last year, making it to the state quarterfinals before losing to Portland’s Oregon Episcopal School. Ranked No. 6 in the state, the 3A Special District-4 back-to-back league champions this year have the potential to go deep into playoff territory. The state’s top eight squads are guaranteed a home appearance in the opening round. Although their opponent at press time was unknown, we can say the Lady Bruins will be playing at home on Tuesday. The primary purpose of H.E.L.P. is to ensure our preschool aged children are prepared for school and have the opportunity learn the Tolowa language and culture. H.E.L.P. has a comprehensive program that serves the whole family and open to our local community. Minimum Qualifications: 1. A B.A Degree in Childhood Education or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience teaching head start/preschool age children. 2.
