W
hen Everet Amos puts his line in the water, he hauls out big ones - this time, a one-ton Ford van. “Went fishing for a Chevy and caught a Ford,” Amos said. Initial reports said the vehicle was a Chevy, but it would be hard to tell the difference when it’s underwater, Curry County Sheriff John Ward said. Ev’s Hi-Tech Towing company came out last Sunday at mid-day to pull the vehicle out of the Rogue River, about three miles up North Bank Rogue River Road outside of Gold Beach.
The van, driven by Gold Beach resident Roger Augur, had ended up in the river at around 4 p.m. on Saturday after it went off the edge of the road, then tumbled down a steep, 50foot bank. After hitting a tree halfway down, the vehicle came to rest in the water, upright but completely submerged, according to Curry County Sheriff’s Marine Sgt. Ted Heath. The driver was able to get out of the van. Witnesses who were fishing from a private boat nearby witnessed the crash and called 911. The boaters picked Augur up from the river More Ford on Page A4

ince 1997, the Festival of Lights, a month-long holiday light show, has been a popular tradition unique to the Brookings area. From just 20,000 lights strung in the bushes along the pathways in ‘97, this year the Festival is set to boast over 2 million LED lights. “It’s our goal this year to be seen from the Space Station,” Nature’s Coastal Holiday secretary Susan Dunn said. “We want to really put Azalea Park on the
map and make it the best show ever!” The nonprofit Nature’s Coastal Holiday partners with the community to string the holiday lights. “First, we need to get the lights strung in the bushes,” Dunn said. “That happens Nov. 2. We meet at the Kids Town parking lot at 9 a.m. with open arms to welcome all the people who answer our call to help, rain or shine. “There’s so much to do and the public is how it gets done,” Dunn said. “Without their help that More String on Page A4

lub Sockeye will soon open Gold Beach’s second marijuana retail location. La Mota, part of an Oregon retail cannabis chain, opened its store earlier this month. The approval for a conditionaluse authorization turned out to be mostly procedural during the Oct. 21 special council meeting. The conditional-use request came from Earl Crumrine and Cory Talbot of Sockeye Farm, LLC to open Club Sockeye in the building they had just purchased at 29970 Ellensburg Ave,, near the Port of Gold Beach. Club Sockeye previously operated its business on North Bank Rogue River Road in Wedderburn, but had outgrown that location, according to Talbot. Councilors Summer Matteson, Larry Brennan, Becky Campbell and Tamie Kaufman unanimously approved the application after adding a handful of conditions for the business to meet. Councilor

City Administrator Jodi Fritts explained that land-use hearings are a “quasi-judicial” process that have stricter protocols than regular council sessions. Fritts noted that they had “quite a bit less people than what we have had on previous hearings, so this is actually kind of good. The hearing might go a bit quicker.” Previous hearings for similar businesses had a number of people come to object, according to Fritts. She made it clear that at this meeting, they were not there to “discuss the merits of whether marijuana is good or bad, because the State of Oregon has already decided that. The meeting is only for the purpose of discussing this particular application.” At the meeting, one witness came forward to testify in favor of approval, stating in part that a second shop in town creates competition, which is good for consumers, and the city could use the tax revenue. Fire’s cause still a puzzle

he cause of a fire Oct. 23 that destroyed the Pac-Nor Barreling plant at 99299 Overlook Rd. in Brookings may not be known for months, according to Harbor Interim Fire Chief Thomas Sorrentino. Harbor Fire is the lead investigating agency. Specific details about the investigation have not yet been released. Brookings Fire Operations Chief Jim Watson said such an investigation will be meticulous and detailed. “We start from the outside and go from there to trace the point of origin.” he said “A lot of data needs to be established.” Plant owner Chris Dichter said members of his crew had been working on a lathe inside the building when the fire erupted inside an adjacent wall. “I’d never seen anything go like that,” Dichter said. “It blew up with smoke and fire. It sounded like a tree fell on the plant.” As the fire erupted, all of the employees escaped from the 7,000-square-foot facility safely. After several hours, the fire was out, but the plant was destroyed. Fire crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby structures and an adjacent forest. There were no injuries reported. Some 45 firefighters were on-scene, according the Watson, including Gold Beach, Cape Ferrelo, Coos Forest Patrol, Smith River, Crescent City, Harbor Fire and Brookings Fire and Rescue.

he U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported three small undersea earthquakes occurred along the Oregon-California coast Monday morning. The first, a 5.3 tremor, struck at 4:01 a.m. 109 miles west of McKinleyville. The two other tremors occurred off the coast of Curry County. A 5.2- magnitude tremor struck west of Brookings at about 4:30 a.m. Then, a 3.6-magnitude quake occurred at about 4:46 a.m. west of Gold Beach. There have been no reports of injuries or damage. The USGS reports no tsunamis were generated by the quakes.

Flares, beach fires, water safety for fishermen The U.S. Coast Guard has scheduled a two-day marine safety and survival training session for Nov. 5-6 at the Curry County Fairground’s Forestry Building in Gold Beach. The training is designed specifically for commercial fishermen, not the general public. During the training, flares, fires on the beaches and jetties, and smoke on vessels in port will be visible from the exercise site, said officials. The sessions are designed to give commercial fishermen hands-on safety equipment and emergency drill training in select Oregon
fishing ports, leading up to the commercial Dungeness crab season. Curt Farrell, the Coast Guard fishing vessel safety coordinator for Oregon and southwest Washington, said participants will practice with the emergency equipment required onboard most commercial fishing vessels, such as personal flotation devices, life rafts, immersion suits, distress signals, EPIRBs and fire extinguishers. They will practice manoverboard recovery procedures, abandoning ship, firefighting and flood control through onboard emergency
drills and practical demonstrations. “This is required training for documented commercial fishing vessels that operate beyond the boundary line,” Farrell said. “Fishermen who have already taken the course are encouraged to attend again to sharpen their skills. A refresher course is recommended every five years.” After completing the course, participants will receive certification to conduct emergency drills aboard commercial fishing vessels. The Doobie Brothers Band was recently nominated for the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, after 50 years on the music scene. They’ve sold more than 48 million albums and have had 16 top-40 hits on Billboard’s Charts. And they’re still touring. But not everyone can make it to a live Doobie Brothers concert, nor afford the $100plus ticket price. That’s where Rockin’ Down the HiWay comes in. The Doobie Brothers tribute band, headed by Tommy “TBird” King, will be performing at the Lucky 7 Casino on Nov. 7, at 350 North Indian Rd. in Smith River. King said his band has been performing the Doobies’ greatest hits for six years and was gobsmacked to hear the original group had just been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “It’s amazing that such a popular band like the Doobie Brothers just got nominated. It’s beyond me why they didn’t make it a long time ago, especially with some bands already in there that aren’t rock and roll. “The Doobies are still performing today, still selling out major venues. They’re fantastic, live. Their vocals are spot on. The vocals are fun. They’re just a fun band. Everyone should get to see them.” King tries to bring a slice of that experience to his own shows with Rockin’ Down the HiWay. He has been performing professionally since the 1960s, having long since graduated from his bar band days. But it was those early years when he perfected his craft and grew his appreciation of an engaged audience. “You take the parts of the experience of bar bands — the long drive to a bar, get there two hours early, hauling the PA system, set up, perform two hours, tear down, be happy to leave there with a couple hundred bucks each,” King recalled. “It’s not really about the money, it’s the experience. Where you hone your chops. Have a good time, get them to sing along.” King also has incorporated an important lesson he learned from his father, who had played jazz trumpet since 1927 heavily inspired by Lois Armstrong. “One thing he told me is how important the intimacy is, to get in touch with the audience, make them feel welcome, feel special. “We’ve taken that a step
further in Rockin’ Down the HiWay. We make them feel like they’re a part of the success of the night.” King, now 67, cobbled together a group of musicians from the Sacramento area to form his latest band, starting with a second lead singer, “Drivin’” Darren Wilson, from Chico, California. “He is very, very good. The demo you hear on our website, he sings ‘China Grove.’ “Our base player, “Jalopy Jeff’” (Viducich), is amazing. Cadillac Jack (Hurst), he nails the signature licks on lead guitar. He has a tough tone and clean sound that fills the room,” King said. The band is rounded out with Robert “The Roadster” Mills on drums and King himself on keyboards. “I’m blessed to perform with guys who aren’t in it for money. They’re all seasoned musicians who’ve been performing since they were kids,” King said. He has actually fronted several tribute and “theme” bands over the years. A theme band, he explained, plays songs revolving around a central style of rock. Like California Dreamin’ performed hits about the Golden State. Southern Rock Review performed Allman Brothers, Lynrd Skynrd, Marshal Tucker and 38 Special songs. His first lineup with Rockin’ Down the HiWay started out performing the hits you hear on the radio while “rolling around and crusin’,” King said, like “Born to be Wild,” “Hitchin’ a Ride,” “Radar Love” and “I Can’t Drive 55.” It was the Doobie Brothers’ hits - “China Grove,” “Long Train Runnin’” and “Jesus is Just Alright” - that were especially connecting with audiences. So, King has switched the emphasis on road songs to Doobie Brothers songs since 2012. He credits his music stable owner, George Gosling of Tabletop Productions, for Rockin’ Down the HiWay’s booking success. “We’ve been blessed to be

Brookings faces the big gorilla - Hidden Valley challenge awaiting this Friday when it hosts the No. 1-ranked 3A football team in the state, Hidden Valley. Okay, Hidden Valley is in reality a 4A school hiding out in 3A clothing. It even says so in bold type in the 3A Special District 2 South season standings on sites like Oregonprepsports.net. Why? Geography. Hailing from the Medford-area out-
skirts of Murphy, the ruling Oregon School Activities Association likely surmised that Hidden Valley High School, although slightly larger in enrollment, was numerically a good fit with St. Mary’s and Cascade Christian, also valley dwellers. As for Brookings? Well, the Bruins are in the neighborhood, too, just over the hill.
Brookings-Harbor ran the table on its early season opponents, amassing a 6-0 record, one of the school’s best in recent memory. Then the Bruins returned to earth, losing to privateschool twins St. Mary’s and Cascade Christian, 3-14 and 0-49, respectively. Now, along comes the team that beat both St. Mary’s (26-49) and Cascade
Christian (14-42). Yep, Hidden Valley. Brookings football coach Shuan Bavaro knows Hidden Valley (8-0) is every bit as good as advertised. “HV is a very talented team, with great speed. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the state, with many weapons to choose from. On defense, they fly to the ball well and are a very gap-sound team.”

Bavaro acknowledged that, “We will have our hands full... Our kids will play hard and leave everything on the field.”

The land-use application authored by Crumrine and Talbot pointed out that they have been operating in the county for a number of years and that they believe they would be opening “one of the largest stores on the coast, which will bring more tourist business to Gold Beach and the surrounding area.” Crumrine gave The Pilot a tour of the new location and answered several questions about cannabis businesses and regulations. When asked whether he thought marijuana businesses were on the verge of becoming mainstream, he said, “Not yet.” “There’s a lot of steps,”
Crumrine said in response to whether the process of opening a cannabis business has become easier over the years. “Nothing’s easy about getting a license to do this business. “First, you have to get everyone to agree. Then, that little box just to record all of my cameras was $8,000. Then every couple of years, the state says you need new cameras. They’re up to $500 for each camera, and I have 25 of them. “I expect to increase my revenues because of location,” Crumrine said, “but my cost is a lot more than it was over at the Wedderburn location.” He agreed that marijuana is big business for government. “Last year, the industry gave $549 million to the State of Oregon,”
he said. He estimated his business in the old location did almost a million dollars in sales last year. “I think we will do two and a half to three million next year in the new location,” he said. The City of Gold Beach will now receive the 3% tax on cannabis sales. Previously, those tax revenues went to Curry County. It’s also a boost for the local economy. “All of these local growers, we buy our stock from them. The people here working for me are all from Gold Beach. They live here; they spend their money here.” Currently, seven people work at the business, but Crumrine predicts he will need to hire more since the current staffing was for a 300-square-foot building, and the new space is 3,000
square feet. “Every business nearby will increase their revenue by us being here,” Crumrine said. “People come here on vacation. It will be smart for them not to have to leave Gold Beach to get cannabis. They can stay right here and will have a better vacation.” Talbot told The Pilot they were just one permit away
from opening, and hoped to be open in the new location within a couple of weeks. The business needs to apply for a new Oregon Liquor Control Commission permit now that they have had their location approved. The store plans to be open seven days a week, with winter hours of 9 a.m.6 p.m.

A new mural in Gold Beach should encourage even more people to follow. At a ribbon cutting Oct. 25 for the “Oregon Is Magic” mural, David Lacey of the Oregon Coast Visitors Association talked about the new mural in Gold Beach. “Funded by the transient lodging tax, the mural is part of Travel Oregon’s Mural Trail, and is one of currently just nine murals across various regions of the state,” he said. “Each city that has a mural gets a page on the Oregon Mural Trail website to encourage visitors to

This year, the list of businesses will be available at the Chamber of Commerce, 703 Chetco Ave., open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The list will also be posted on the chamber website and at Umpqua Bank, U.S. Bank and Evergreen Bank.

Chip Bubl Keep baiting those slugs. They will mate and lay eggs, if it warms a bit. You want to stop them and reduce the overwintering eggs as much as possible. Your transplants and seedlings next spring will be so much happier. (By the way, did you know slugs have about 10,000 micro-teeth?) Consider whitewashing the trunks of young trees. It will help prevent winter freeze injury and sunburn in the summer. Apply white latex paint to the trunk up about 4 feet. Won’t take much time and is an easy
project for a dry fall day. Did the stink bugs disappear? I have seen stink bug damage on Asian pears (heavy dimpling and often distortion of the fruit) and a few other crops. But they haven’t shown up on walls seeking to winter over with you inside. Maybe they are on a later schedule. Maybe a predator has reduced the population at the egg or early instar stage. We can only hope! What is making those lawn divots? I got a number of calls in the last several weeks about lawns that had lots of small divots taken out. One location had an
area about 5 feet wide by 30 feet long. The rest of the lawn was untouched. Generally, the lawns recover fully. Skunks or raccoons are the perps. They are looking for juicy crane fly and/or cutworm larvae to fatten up for winter. The animals move fast and aerate your lawn as they grab the grub. Both animal species do their best work at night and generally don’t make a sound or, in the case of skunks, leave a scent. You can also see robins, Steller’s jays, crows, flickers, starlings and other birds looking for the same meal. They don’t rip anything up, but rather
use their sharp beaks to spear the larvae. All are providing good biological control, for free! Warm, wet fall weather can set up fruit disease. Consider spraying, if we get a stretch of dry days, copper on apples, pears, peaches, cherries and blueberries. This may help reduce disease problems next spring.

TOLOWA DEE-NI’ NATION AWARDED NATIONAL NPS AWARD Smith River, CA–The Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation recently received a $34,349 grant from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund to create a publication highlighting the immense historical and cultural importance of the Howonquet Indian Cemetery. The Howonquet Cemetery, constructedin the early 1900s, represents a critical juncture in the Tribe’s contemporary history. It is also where the Tolowa people continue to perform sacred customary practices dating back to time immemorial. Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Amanda O’Connell, a Tolowa citizen, is charged with developing the much-anticipated “Howonquet Indian Cemetery: An Oral History Project of Cultural Traditions and Protocols.” “The primary goal of this project is to make vital cultural knowledge more readily accessible to current and future Tolowa citizens,” said O’Connell. “We are grateful for the opportunity to permanently preserve the story of the Howonquet Cemetery.” O’Connell’s vision for the booklet seamlessly blends local community members’ traditional knowledge with currently available documentation on the funerary grounds. She plans to conduct interviews with Tolowa citizens about the Tribal burial procedures specific to the Howonquet Cemetery. Excerpts from the formalized conversations will be paired with pictures, maps, and historical records as a means of illustrating the interviewees’ personal experiences and adding further context to the publication. The active burial place, located Smith River, is where many Tolowa families put their loved ones to rest and it occupies a central part in the Tribe’s post European contact history. For example, the continued use and management of the cemetery played a role inthe Tribe’s successful effort to reestablish federal recognition. Details such as this and many others will be included in the professionally produced, oral history document, which is expected to be ready for distributionin two years. Once completed, the published resource will benefit the Tolowa people for many generations to come. The Tolowa Tribal Historic Preservation Office’s (THPO) primary function is to preserve and protect the Tribe’s historical information, ancestral lands and resources.
