On Sept. 28th – It will be Raining Cats & Dogs at the Port The community is invited to come down to the Port of Brookings-Harbor Kite Field on September 28th, 11am to 3pm, for the Seventh Annual Rotary fundraiser, Raining Cats & Dogs. In addition to the helicopter flyover and drop, the free, familyfriendly event will offer activities such as a bounce house and games. The Brookings-Harbor Rotary Club will have food and beverages for sale to the public. “The more successful we are fundraising with Raining Cats & Dogs, means the more we can help the community,” stated Bonnie Jordan, 2019-20 Rotary President. “Rotarians began months ago preparing for this annual event; talking with our previous supporters and area businesses, getting both old and new sponsors on board.” Rotary’s 2019 five major sponsors are Curry Community Health, Harbrook Jewelers, Mini Pet Mart, Rogue Credit Union and Seaview Senior Living. With their generous support, and the sponsorships from our many other community businesses, we are able to put on this fundraising event. Our media partners, Curry Coastal Pilot and KURY Radio, have been very involved and are working with our sponsors to make this annual event even more successful. Rotary has six community nonprofits who have signed up to be sales partners for 2019. They include Marine Corps. League Calvin E. Murphy Det. #578, Sea View Resident’s Council, BHHS Cheerleaders and Newspapers in Education (NIE). New partners this year are the Soroptimists and Cub Scouts. The Brookings-Harbor Rotary Club and these sales partners have been out in the community
selling “adoptions” of rubber cats and dogs for $5 each. Each adoption sold represents an entry into a raffle, with a chance at a grand prize of $5,000 and over $6,000 in additional prizes. Sales from community partners will continue until 4pm on Thursday, September 26th. Each adopted rubber cat and dog is numbered and will be dropped from a helicopter passing over a painted target on the kite field at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 28th. The closest critter to the target wins the grand prize of $5000. The remaining prizes will be awarded in order of value and by order of the cats or dogs closest to the target. “Raining Cats and Dogs is a lot more than just a Rotary Club raffle drawing. It is a Win-WinWin for our community,” stated Jordan. “Rotary created Raining Cats & Dogs in 2013, and since that time has raised over $90,000 to support many community service projects. These range from water safety lessons for third graders, shoe vouchers for students and food deliveries to the local food bank and community non-profits, along with high school scholarships and supporting Rotary Youth Leadership Exchange and Interact.” In addition to the “Big Drop,” scheduled for 2pm, there will be a Rotary food booth selling hot dogs, etc., and Interact will host a facepainting booth. Rotary will also have a coloring contest, open to elementary and middle-school students. The coloring page will be distributed in the Raining Cats & Dogs tabloid that will be coming out just prior to the event, and will also be available at the event. each receive $50. But with a $5,000 grand prize at stake when a helicopter drops up to 5,000 toy cats and dogs at a target, everyone wants to know about the raffle rules first. To make certain all the adoption funds go into community projects, the Rotary Club organizes and pays the cost of the Raining Cats & Dogs event with the help of sponsors and donations. The full list of donors and prizes appears on every entry adoption form, along with the complete rules for the Raining Cats & Dogs raffle, which is operated under the State of Oregon regulations for non-profit raffles. In case the weather or other circumstances mean the toys cannot be dropped, every entry has a regular drawing ticket that will be used to determine the prize winners. Those who buy adoptions need not be present to win. The club plans to announce winners both
at the Kite Field on September 28th, and will contact winners who may not be present at the big event. Sales partners earn funds
■■Adoptions can be purchased from partners through Thursday, Sept. 26 For the 2019 Raining Cats & Dogs raffle, there are six groups earning funds with every Raining Cat & Dog adoption they sell. Their basic share is $1 for every $5 adoption they sell, but in addition, the groups are also competing for top sales prizes that will earn them extra cash for their individual service projects.
2017 Marine Corps. League Partner Winner
Marine Corps League Calvin E Murphy Det. #578 The Marine Corps League is the local detachment of a national organization, in which veterans of the Marine Corps join together to preserve the traditions and interests of the U. S. Marine Corps. In Curry County, the Marine Corps League is best known for celebrating the annual Marine Corps anniversary with a gala event, and using the funds raised for the scholarship program and other community projects. Like almost every league detachment, the Curry County unit sponsors the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. The League collects and distributes toys to needy children during the holiday season. Nationally,
some of the league programs include helping wounded Marines, a youth physical fitness program, scholarships for members of Marine families, volunteer help with the Veterans Affairs offices, lobbying efforts and more.
Sea View Residents’ Council You can find members of the Sea View Residents’ Council out in the community and at Sea View Senior Living Center every day, selling adoptions for the Raining Cats & Dogs event. The funds are headed for the council’s sole project: providing holiday bonuses for the members of the staff at Sea View who take care of the residents of the facility. The Residents Council is also proud of selling the winning tickets in the 2013 and 2014 and 2015 Raining Cats & Dogs events. Newspapers in Education (NIE) - Free Newspapers for Schools Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a project of the Curry Coastal Pilot newspaper to provide free newspapers for teacher and student use at area schools. A community newspaper is a timely and local tool that can be used in lessons from reading and writing to math and social studies, at every grade level. The same kind of NIE program is common at newspapers across the nation, all operated on donations from readers and sponsors. At the start of every school year, the Pilot reminds teachers and other staff members at the school that free newspapers are available-either in classroom sets or individual copies. Donations from readers and sponsors pay for the costs. The sales commission to NIE from Raining Cats & Dogs will supplement the funds for the program. The Pilot staff is selling adoptions during business hours8:30am to 5pm, weekdays-in the Pilot office.

2019 Raining Cats & Dogs — Page 7 Soroptimists Soroptimists is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Almost 160,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries contribute time and financial support to communitybased and international projects. Local Soroptimist clubs determine the focus of volunteer work in their communities. In addition, Soroptimists participate in organizationwide programs including the Live Your Dream Award and the Dream It, Be It program for girls. Clubs also participate in the Live Your Dream campaign, which encourages all women to live their dream while helping others to do the same. What do we do in Brookings? Soroptimist International of Brookings formed in January of 1958 and was sponsored by the Crescent City Soroptimist club. Funds raised through the Raining Cats & Dogs will support club activities, service projects, awards, and scholarships. Some of these include: Two $1,500 scholarships to Brookings-Harbor High School graduates, an $800 Live Your Dream Award,
has an extensive background in cheerleading coaching. This is her second year of coaching. Williams is building a new program by bringing back competitive cheerleading to the school (she was a competitive cheerleader at BHHS from 2009-2012). She believes it is important for them to support the teams and be good cheerleaders for the community as well. All the proceeds earned through the sale of Raining Cats & Dogs adoptions will go towards new uniforms and everything that comes with being a competitive team.
BHHS 2018 Cheerleaders The Girl of the Month recognition program for high school seniors, the Community Baby Shower, financial support of Oasis House women’s shelter, support for Safety City. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of the month at noon at Blue Water restaurant. This fall, the Brookings and Gold Beach Soroptimist clubs are holding a Walk for Freedom on October 19 in Brookings, to raise awareness for
and help prevent human trafficking. The community is invited to join in this walk, held in partnership with A-21, whose goal is to abolish slavery in the twenty first century. For information, contact brookingswalkforfreedom@gmail.com.
BHHS Cheerleaders The Brookings-Harbor High School has a new Cheerleading program this year. The Cheer team is being coached by Mariah Williams who
Cub Scouts Cub Scout Pack 124 is our local organization of kindergarten to 5th grade children that learn many requirements that help them become great citizens. Our Cub Scouts do many service projects throughout the year. All year through, Cub Scouts raise money in an effort to attend their annual Camp Baker trip in August. 2019 Rotary Third Grade Water Safety Lessons The Brookings-Harbor Rotary Club provides funding (made possible by Raining Cats & Dogs), to make water safety lessons available to third-grade students at the Brookings City Pool. The Club gathers volunteers from throughout the community and works with the city’s pool staff and Kalmiopsis teachers, for the water safety instruction classes. Students are first tested for their water skill levels; for many it may be the first time they are in the water. They work with Rotarians and community volunteers the rest of the week to learn and improve their water skills. Each daily lesson concentrates on a different water skill,
beginning with bobbing, and blowing bubbles, then floating and kicking and learning to tread water. Thursday is safety day, with students learning safety lessons with low gravity pullers, noodles, coolers and life jackets. The final day is Friday Fun Day: students splash, play and enjoy their new-found water skills. Teachers say the lessons come at an age when children are starting to explore the world on their own, and at a time when the weather and summer vacation mean that every child needs to know more about water safety. The children are able to associate water with fun and exercise. Their new skills could not only save their life, but also open up a whole new world.

Rotary Water Safety Lesson Success
Ella Christensen, age 9, was with two friends in the swimming hole at Loeb Park when one of the other girls ran into trouble with the Chetco River’s late spring currents. Ella knew exactly what to do: She used “big arms” to swim toward her friend. She used a “loud voice” and direct eye contact with the nearest adults to call for help. And she did it all without screaming or panicking. Quickly attracted by Ella’s actions, three women on the shore dove in to help all three girls back to safety, according to Ella’s mother Jenny Christensen. How did Ella know what to do? Just a week earlier she had been in the annual third-grade water safety lessons -- a project funded and facilitated by the Rotary Club of Brookings-Harbor, in partnership with Kalmiopsis School and the City of Brookings. “Man, was I ever grateful for those lessons,” says Jenny. “I didn’t put it together (the lessons and Ella’s actions), but Ella did.” “We’ve always felt that providing these water safety lessons every year could potentially save a child’s life,” says Rotary Club President Bonnie Jordan.
“This is the first time we’ve gotten concrete proof that it has.” By design, the lessons are provided at the end of the school year, just as students are likely to be around water at a naturally curious age. The project includes classroom instruction, and 30 minutes in the city pool every day for a week. In screening on the first day in the water, it’s clear that half the third graders either have never been in the water, have no water skills, or are extremely afraid of the water. But they are all willing to try. In the water, they work in small groups with volunteers. The water activities are based on skill level of the group. Special safety lessons are for everyone: They get to try floating in life jackets, grabbing a rescue ring, and even lying down on the pool deck to pull a friend back to the wall. By the last session on Friday, almost all are playing safely “away from the wall.” It was a sunny afternoon on the first weekend of summer vacation when the Christensen family took visiting out-of-state friends to play in the Chetco River at Loeb State Park. Jenny recalls a “big discussion” about whether the children would be using life jackets. With life jackets on, Ella and two other girls decided to try swimming out to the rock at the park’s popular swimming hole. Suddenly, the visiting 11-year-old girl was in trouble as she crossed the river current. “Just her face was above the water,” recalls Jenny, who was watching from shore with the older girl’s
mother. Neither of them, Jenny says, “are very good in the water. “It was SO scary. We were watching her be swept down the river in slow motion. There was no way those girls were getting back to shore on their own. “I remember thinking: How does Ella know what to do?” So it is no surprise that Ella had more official swim lessons over the summer, and Jenny believes the water safety lessons are “imperative” for third graders. For the Rotarians, the third-grade safety lessons are one of the club’s favorite projects, according to President Bonnie, but only one project among many. “Being a member of the Rotary Club of BrookingsHarbor gives us many opportunities to positively impact our community and the world as a whole. Brookings-Harbor High School Interact Club Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self. Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary club sponsors mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills. Our local Brookings Harbor Interact Club is just starting it’s 2019-2020 year and developing ideas for local and international service projects. As a local club BHHS will serve our local community but they also have the opportunity to participate in the Interact District Clubs international project.
A conglomeration of about 30 clubs make up our District from Etna, CA to Newport, OR. Last year our District Clubs raised about $7000 to bring awareness to suicide prevention through the International Association for Suicide Prevention. Our BHHS Interact club, led by Zack Walker, will kick the year off with face-painting at the Raining Cats & Dogs fundraiser. Funds raised at local events go towards participation in District Training Conference and fun to sponsor a sophomore in the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. Working to end Polio Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since their first project to vaccinate children in the
Philippines in 1979. They have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. So far, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating the disease worldwide. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries poliofree. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
