No luck on lead for man missing T

he family’s search continues this week for a missing Crescent City man after a promising lead in Arizona proved to be a false alarm. Kendal Smith returned Thursday night from Benson, Arizona, where several people had reported spotting his father-inlaw, Norbert Anthony (Tony) Dantzman. Dantzman disappeared Aug. 30 from a motel room in Winter, Wisconsin. Smith said a possible sighting of Dantzman 1,700 miles away actually had made sense. “For 15 years, he and his (now deceased) wife spent two to three months a year in Arizona vacationing,” Smith told The Triplicate. “He could easily have had a flashback of wanting to go to Arizona. Everybody knows to get out of Wisconsin in the winter.” Dantzman, who suffers from dementia, was visiting rural Wisconsin with his daughter, Cindy Smith, and her husband, Kendal, for a family centennial reunion when he walked away from his motel room and disappeared. Search and rescue canines lost his scent along County Highway W. The family suspects someone may have given him a ride, since no body has been found following extensive searches.

n Dec. 4, 1969, three storm systems converged on Oahu, Hawaii to create once-in-a-lifetime breaks for big-wave surfers of that era. But those conditions seemingly proved too hazardous, even for the most adventurous at Waimea Bay. However, around the peak of the North Shore was Makaha Beach, where an undeterred Greg Noll rode into surfing folklore, braving what many eyewitnesses swear was - still is - the largest wave ever attempted un-towed, one 35 to 40 feet high. “I didn’t know this was the 50th anniversary of Makaha,” Noll said, between bites of his salad at Crescent City’s Los Compadre’s restaurant. “Wow, 50 damn years. I knew I was gettin’ old, but...” Noll was sitting with his wife, Laura, as he recalled his legendary days as a big-wave surfer. Ironically, Noll said, even in an era when on any given day there would be 100 photographers for every surfer to record their exploits, no photos exist of his Makaha run. “I was in charge of the camera, but I didn’t do very well. I was kind of short,” Laura Noll acknowledged. “It was so far out, and so much haze and (stuff) on the water, they couldn’t get a picture,” Greg Noll said. “I think everybody was pretty much spellbound by the size of the surf that day. They weren’t even thinking of pictures. “We had some of the best surfers in the world, and it just blew everybody’s socks off, the size of the waves that day.” Noll was quoted saying at the time that he had been waiting for just the right wave, “If I don’t do this, I’ll be 80 years old, banging my cane around, still pissed off that I’d gone chicken on the one day I’d worked for my whole life. Police eye possible suspect in two downtown Elks Lodge break-ins T

he Crescent City Police Department is eyeing a single suspect in two recent break-ins at the downtown Elks Lodge, 359 H St. Nothing was taken in the first break-in, Oct. 22. Five days later, someone broke through the lodge’s front glass door and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the bar area. Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin said that although there was no exterior surveillance, some surveillance is available from the building’s interior that points to a single suspect. “We do have a suspect in mind, but I can’t say any more than that, or it

might tip them off,” Griffin said. The Triplicate’s former office, at 340 H St., was also broken into on Sept.16. The company’s losses totaled nearly $20,000, including several office computers. At the time, Acting Chief of Police Sgt. Edward Wilson said The Triplicate was one of five businesses that had been burglarized since Aug.6, according to Crescent City police records. He said that during that timeframe, there had been seven incidents of shoplifting, two vehicle burglaries, and two residential and five commercial burglaries. Wilson said anecdotally that the number of break-ins seemed on par with property crime this time of year.

“We see an increase in petty theft from cars during the summer at the hotels and motels, while the residential break-ins tend to be steady,” he said. Despite the latest break-ins on H Street, Griffin said he saw no reason to dispute Wilson’s assumptions without fully digging through the reports over the past year to discover possible trends. “Break-ins are still on average with what we normally deal with,” Griffin said. Addie Meedom House residents escape fire A

fire Thursday evening at the Addie Meedom House prompted the evacuation of its 37 occupants. Crescent City Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 6:09 p.m. to the structure at 1445 Parkway Dr. in Crescent City, which is an assisted-living and memory-care facility. The Pelican Bay State Prison Fire Department responded as well. Fire units arrived to find the facility’s staff removing residents to the front porch of the building.

Fire personnel entered the building to locate the fire as the staff continued the evacuation. Three occupants and one staff member were transported by Del Norte Ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The fire was located in a unit to the rear of the facility, with smoke in the hallway. Firefighters opened a room door to find smoke within two feet of the floor, along with a smoldering pillow. Staff members had used a fire extinguisher to control the fire, but the More Fire on Page A3

And if you get through the entire wave, it’s that much more. “A lot of times, as far as people are concerned, if you get the crap beat out of you, they’d prefer that, I guess. Like a bullfighter getting gored. People like to see the wipeouts as much as anything else.” Noll suggested to Laura they tie the 50th anniversary of Makaha with their latest venture: a new documentary, “The Film Archives of Greg Noll, Lost and Found” will be showing at the Hawai’i Film Festival on Nov. 9. Directors Grant Washburn and Jay Johnson took thousands of hours of recovered film that Noll shot from the ‘50s and ‘60s, then digitized it and added current interviews. Noll said the title refers to both the footage and their family, lost then found, here in Crescent City. How they ended up here is still another story. Noll said they drove to Alaska in an old Metro van he had fixed up as a camper, in the 1970s, for the fishing and hunting. After one-too-many cold winters, they drove back south and discovered Crescent City in 1974. “There was a guy, a pretty good fisherman, a hunting outlaw. We threw in with him for a while and had so much fun, decided to come here and live,” Noll said. “We just really liked the area - small, people are nice, you know. We just had to get out of Southern California. The place was turning into a giant turd.” He got in to commercial fishing soon after, transitioning from 18foot, 42-foot and 70-foot boats over the years, fishing crab, shrimp and the occasional swordfish.

Noll these days maintains a boat in the harbor for recreational fishing, going after snapper and cod and the occasional albacore, if it comes close enough. “From here to the lighthouse, we’ve fished all those little high spots on the reefs out there,” he said. Their first home was out on Kings Valley Road, but they found their forever place in Hiouchi, just off the Smith River, and have lived there for 40 years. He’s long since given up riding surfboards. Now, his business - “Noll Surfboards” - makes re-creations of the boards ridden by history’s famous surfers. Having surfed some of the biggest waves from Brazil to Japan, Noll said the quality of surfing in Crescent City is in the eye of the beholder. “Sometimes, surfing where the quality of the wave isn’t as good, but there’s a lack of crowds, Federal Bureau of Investigation for access to orbiting surveillance satellites. He said he’s also considering returning to Wisconson to reboot search efforts there. And, said Smith, “(Officials) are talking about putting up drones again there, what with the trees having lost all their leaves. So they think they might spot something, like clothing. “I don’t think we’ll find a body. hristmas tree permits will be available online and at locations across southwest Oregon, including Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest district offices and Bureau of Land Management offices in Medford, Grants Pass and Coos Bay, beginning Nov. 8. Permits allow cutting personal-use Christmas trees and are required for each individual tree that visitors take home. The permits are $5 per tree and non-refundable. There’s a limit of five tree permits per household. The permits may be used only on lands open to Christmas tree harvesting that are administered by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and the Medford and Coos Bay BLM districts. Free maps identifying these areas are provided when the permits are purchased, as well as on Avenza. Last Chance Grade enters the next phase of planning Staff Report

he California Transportation Commission will visit this region Nov. 6 to tour and discuss the biggest long-term infrastructure project in Del Norte County. The commissioners will receive a guided tour of the Last Chance Grade, then host a meeting at 2 p.m. in the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors chambers in the Flynn Administrative Center, 981 H St. in Crescent City. The Last Chance Grade is a three-mile segment of U.S. Highway 101 just north of Wilson Creek, between Klamath and Crescent City. Landslides and road failures have been an ongoing problem there for decades. At the transportation commission’s town hall meeting, commissioners will hear from U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman, city and county staff, and the Yurok Tribe. Caltrans will give a 30-minute presentation on Last Chance Grade, the U.S. Highways 199 and 197 safety project, and the Dr. Fine Bridge replacement project. Other agencies will have 10-minute blocks to speak as well, including the Humboldt County Association of Governments, Del Norte County Regional Airport, the Del Norte Office of Emergency Services and the Redwood Coast Transit Authority. The pub-

lic is invited to speak to the commissioners, too. A second community meeting follows at 6 p.m. at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds, 421 U.S. Highway 101 in Crescent City. California Transportation Commission Executive Director Susan Brown will attend the meeting, which will be hosted by Huffman, State Sen. Mike McGuire and Assemblyman Jim Wood. On the agenda will by Caltrans’ efforts to re-route U.S. 101 around the Last Chance Grade slide. The state is weighing seven alternate routes around the slide area, plus another option that leaves it as is. Those options, mapped out on website lastchancegrade.com, include four routes that would include bridges and three that require digging tunnels. Cost estimates for the options range from $300 million to $2 billion. Officials will review of the Last Chance Grade Stakeholder Group’s scope and progress, update the environmental review and engineering work completed over the last 24 months, and provide estimated timelines for completion and breaking ground on the preferred permanent alternative route. According to commission’s timeline, the project approval and environmental document phase will last through 2026. The design and permitting phase would be completed by 2031, and construction finished by 2039.

pion, Scott competes next at the Northcoast Section championships Nov. 18-19 at Napa Valley College in Napa. Doubles action took place after The Triplicate’s deadline. Aliyah Rafalowski and Eimily Feeney competed in the championship round in Fortuna as the Warriors’ No. 1 doubles team. The Del Norte High School football team was set to battle for league supremacy Friday night against

Eureka. (See up-to-the-minute results at www.triplicate. com.). A win would give Del Norte its first undisputed league title since 2016. Regardless of how the Warriors finished, it could be a waiting game for them, too. The North Coast Section announced Oct. 30 it will extend its football regular season by one week to allow teams unable to play this weekend because of the Kincade Fire in the North Bay to complete their

schedules. Football’s regular season now will end Nov. 8-9, with the seeding to be determined Nov. 10. The boys’ soccer team also must wait until Sunday to see if their third-place finish, with a 7-3-2 overall record in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5, was good enough to move on to NCS playoff action, said the school’s athletic director, Bob Hadfield.

High winds spark outage, fire danger in north county By Jessica Goddard Staff Writer

igh winds contributed to a loss of power for nearly 10,000 Del Norte addresses and a red-flag fire warning for parts of the county. Some 9,900 Del Norte County residents lost power Tuesday night because of a fallen tree hitting a power line on U.S. Highway 101 and Rossini Lane in Smith River. The power went out around 11:25 p.m. for customers from Smith River to Crescent City. At around midnight, Pacific Power crews rerouted the power, restoring electricity to more than 8,000 customers. But the remaining 1,063 customers did not receive power until 10:09 a.m. Thursday. Crews worked through the night to repair the downed power line, said Pacific Power spokesman Tom Gauntt. He said the fallen tree hitting the power lines most likely was caused by high winds, especially through the Smith River Canyon. High winds also contributed to portions of Del Norte County being on a red-flag warning until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Those winds were not the usual coastal winds, but were “easterly winds” found in the mountainous regions, according

The winds mostly died down Thursday afternoon, which lessened the fire threat, according to Aylward. Still, no rain is forecast for the upcoming week. While the high winds can pose difficulties for power companies, Pacific Power said it builds systems with higher tolerance in coastal communities where high winds are common. They also adjust the tightness of the lines so there is some leeway for the wind. “That’s why the guys who (set up the power lines) know what they’re doing. They fit it to the climate,” Gauntt said. “This is what we do, make sure it has the right strength and reliability for the area it’s in.” Outages from wind are a “very rare occasion,” said Gauntt, although he encourages people to be watchful and to manage their landscape if they see trees or branches that need to be pruned. While the high winds calmed somewhat in Del Norte County, the Siskiyou Mountain pass and inland near Redding still are under a red-flag warning.

John “Brian” McNally, was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 23, 1943, to parents John and DorothyMcNally. His parents, and brothers Alan and Kevin predeceased him. Brother Craig McNally resides in Hawaii. Brother Tom lives in New Jersey, and sister Kerry resides in Massachusetts. Brian grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. He was described in the Saint Paul’s Parish High School yearbook as “Einstein 2” and a “constant companion of mischief”. He received his Associate of Arts degree from Mercer County Community College, graduating with honors in 1977. He became a licensed Land Surveyor in 1978 and received Barbara Louise Oliver Feb. 4, 1960 - Oct. 24, 2019

Barbara Louise Oliver was born February 4, 1960 in Campbell, CA to Elden and Mary McFeron. She was raised in Campbell where she attended grade school and met long life friends until Howard W. Burke June 28, 1938 - Oct. 29, 2019

Howard W. Burke passed away on October 29, 2019 at the age of 81. He was born in El Monte, CA to Howard A. and Mary Burke on June 28, 1938. Howard grew up in San Fernando Valley, CA. His passion was airplanes. He joined the Army in the 1960’s and was in special forces in Viet Nam. His love for airplanes, motived his career in FFA inspecting landing gear in airplanes. He was a personal friend of Papy Boyenton and good friend Ken Osmond and many pilot friends. Howard worked with Civil Air Patrol and assisted with many rescues. He married the love of his life Thean Anderson in 1966 and they were blessed with daughter Marcia who passed at the age of 11 years. Howard and Thean spent the last years of their life together at Crescent City Nursing Home where Thean passed a few years ago. Howard was loved by all. He is survived by sister Sarah Burke and Laura Johnson both of Crescent City and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Celebration of life will be held at Glen Haven Memorial Park with

his Bachelor of Arts degree from Thomas Edison University that same year. His parents did not have the financial means to send Brian to law school, so he attended classes during the day and worked evenings to supplement his student loans. Brian graduated with high honors (Order of the Coif) from McGeorge School of Law in 1983. His legal career included work as a Deputy City Attorney in San Diego (where he prosecuted the “Charlie the Tuna” poaching case,) and Deputy Public Defender in Madera and Shasta Counties. It was at contract Public Defender Frank O’Connor ’s office that he met his wife Erin O’Toole-McNally. Brian also worked for a prestigious civil litigation firm in the Bay Area. He suffered through every moment of that job because he did not enter into the legal profession for wealth or status. He was happiest defending the people society forgot. Brian was more comfortable in his tan, polyester, “Public Defender suit” than he was in a tailored wool suit. He was an excellent trial lawyer. Brian’s love of sci-

ence lead him to follow in his father ’s footsteps and work as an Environmental Health Specialist. He received his Environmental Health Specialist license in New Jersey in 1988. In the 1990’s Brian decided he wanted to explore a career other than the practice of law. He had always found satisfaction as a Health Inspector. However, to work in this field in California, he would need to take and pass a statistics course because California imposed this additional registration requirement. Brian did not want to devote an entire semester in college to study the subject, so he bought a textbook and studied it over the weekend. He was allowed to challenge the course and take a test in lieu of the class. Brian easily passed the exam. Brian went on to be employed by Environmental Health Departments in Shasta, Trinity, and Del Norte Counties. In 2017, after having passed tests that qualified him for specialized training by the Department of Homeland Security, Brian traveled to Area 51 to to attend courses in the Introduction to Radiological/Nucle-

ar WMD Operations, the use of Radiation Instruments, and the Response to Nuclear/ WMD Incidents. Brian, ever the student, obtained a Water Treatment Plant Operation Certificate from California State University, Sacramento in 1990. He also taught paralegal classes at Shasta College, and published novels. He was asked to write a column for a local Shasta County publication and submitted stories which primarily focused on gardening. However, he wrote on various other topics. One of his more irreverent stories dealt with septic systems and was titled “Just ‘Cause You Flush it, Don’t Mean it’s Gone.” He had an Irishman’s sense of humor and never fully abandoned that constant companionship with mischief. Brian and Erin have two daughters, Frances “Frannie” who is living in Portland, Oregon, and Anna “Annie” who resides in Redding, California. His girls were his pride and joy. When Brian was diagnosed with a terminal illness, his only concern was to take care of his family. Rather than dwelling on his

medical issues, he spent his last moments taking steps to ensure his family was going to be taken care of after he passed. Brian was an avid gardener and loved growing rare plants. Other interests he had were geology, trains, and travel. He did not trust airplanes. Brian developed a love for Newfoundland, probably because it was the closest he felt he could get to Ireland without needing to set foot on a plane. Brian detested bullies and had no interest in material wealth. In his last days, Brian was able to be with his family and loyal friends. In addition to his wife and daughters, amazing people from the Crescent City community came forward to help with end of life care. The family thanks the many people who have provided kind wishes and support. They send very special thanks to Helen Ellsworth, Karen Restad, Sandy Brook, and friend Will. Brian passed away on October 13, 2019, after a brief illness. His family requests in lieu of cards, flowers, or donations, for people to write and call

her family relocated to Del Norte County in 1971. Eventually, made their home in Smith River, CA where Barbara continued to go to school and excelled in all she did. Barbara excitedly welcomed her son DJ in June of 1978 and her daughter Jennifer in August 1979. Her children were the light of her life and she strived to always do her best to make the best life for the three of them until she met her husband Jake and his two boys Jakie and Arley in 1992. After realizing they were soul mates, they relocated their family to Brookings, Oregon. In 1998, Jake and Barbara decided

it was time to start a new journey when they moved the family to Utah. In 2003, it was decided it was time to move home to be close to their parents and family. Barbara loved the outdoors…camping, tanning and being with her family is what she loved! Anyone who knew her, knew of her love for her family, the color purple, butterflies and most of all, her true love…her grandbabies something she had wanted most of her life. In 2009, Barbara started a new adventure of helping people through Redwood Medical, where she worked and built bonds and re-

lationships with all she came in contact with. The family she found at Redwood Medical is the most loving and caring group of people who she will forever hold dear in her heart as well as her family. She will be truly missed by all not only in her family but this community as a whole. Barbara was someone that could be confided in and would always be there with a helping hand with no judgement attached. She was truly a person who loved helping all people. OPINION City needs more areas available for hobbyists of all types

Dear Editor: I feel it would be a good use of resources for the park to have a dedicated area for flying model aircraft. I think that would be best done on a plot of city-owned land, perhaps located near the park, if such a spot is available. Also, San Diego has its “model yacht” pond on a small island in its bay. Perhaps a small (half-

acre) oval pond can be created and connected to the bay for its water. Plus, set up a small dirt track for racing scale-model r/c vehicles? In all cases, maybe there needs to be a rule disallowing gas-, jet- or rocket-operated craft, due to noise, especially. Agency for seniors hosts survey to improve services By David Hayes Staff Writer

he Area 1 Agency on Aging (A1AA) is hosting a survey to determine the best ways it can help seniors living in Del Norte and Humboldt counties. Executive Director Maggie Kraft told the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 22 that as the fourth-smallest Area 1 agency of 33 in the state, it has to smartly utilize the funds it receives from the Older Americans Act. A1AA provides services and information for seniors and people with disabilities, their families, caregivers, friends and neighbors. Its services are broken down into three areas: — As a funding agency, it awards contracts for nutrition and other supportive services to meet the special needs of a community’s older population. — As an administrative agency, it monitors, evaluates and documents the performance of every contracted service provider. — As a planning agency, it gathers information, determines priorities for service, and develops a plan for service to seniors, their caregivers and families. — As an advocate for seniors, it hosts public hearings, provides information to local and state decisionmakers, and collaborates with other organizations to provide needed assistance to seniors. The funds, Kraft said, goe to specific areas such as home-delivered meals, information assistance, the ombudsmen program, exercise programs and other services. Every four years, A1AA updates its area plan, which tells the state and federal government what the money it receives will be used for. To help direct those funds where their needed, A1AA is hosting the Older Adult Needs and Concerns Survey through Nov. 30. The survey will help us plan services, improve services, look at future programs, and we’ll also be gathering data to share with the county and cities in terms of what your community looks like in terms of senior numbers. “And that can be useful when going out looking for grants and other things,” she added. Kraft said Del Norte County provided extra funding to assist with the survey, which will help with distribution and put in focus a Del Norte snapshot review of the data of the responses it receives. In addition to conducting the survey, Kraft said the A1AA is tasked with updating its senior information guide every two years. A1AA plans to publish a new one in January 2020 to distribute 2,000 copies throughout the two-county area. “The guide is actually a hard copy of things that exist online, but we find for many people it’s just easier for them to use a hard copy,” Kraft said. “It has a larger font and has the information people are

primarily looking for in topics for seniors. We’re working with the senior center here to gather updates for Del Norte.” Kraft said A1AA’s next project is Northcoast Homeshare. She said every other year, A1AA receives small amounts of money to do a feasibility study. This year’s plan is to talk to seniors about opening their home to renters. “We know there are a lot who live in their family homes. It makes no sense to move out of them,” Kraft said. “One, where are they going to find locally that is going to meet their needs? Two, what would they do with all their stuff? Three, why move out at all?” Kraft said there is usually extra space available in these homes. But she’s not talking taking in a homeless person with a mental disorder. “I’m talking about people in their 50s and 60s who are low-income seniors who can’t find a rental unit anymore, an affordable one-bedroom apartment,” Kraft said. “Those people could be great roommates for someone in their 70s and 80s. “We do have people struggling to survive on Supplemental Security Income with the rising costs of living in California in our rural areas. So, this could be a win-win.” Kraft said A1AA has created a system to help perspective senior renters to do a background check, provide a support for a match, look at a person’s housing to help determine rent amount, and help with conflict resolution issues. “We’re writing a grant to get some part-time staff in there help create volunteer corps. We’re modeling our program after Vermont Homeshare, which has been very successful with volunteers. We have to. We can’t afford a full-time person doing this work,” she said. A1AA will be a hosting a fundraiser to pay for the Northcoast Homeshare program: “Pints for Nonprofits.” The fundraiser is Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to closing at Mad River Brewery. One dollar per pint will go to A1AA earmarked for Northcoast Homeshare. In other recent city council action, County Administrative Officer Jay Sarina told the supervisors that the administration was approached by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Wildlife Conservation Board, which is a funding an acquisition arm of the resources department regarding existing defaulted properties in Del Norte County’s Pacific Shores Subdivision and adjacent area. An additional parcel area was just outside the subdivision that is also in default, Sarina said. “At this point, I believe there are 26 parcels available that have not paid their taxes, penalties and interest in the last five years,” Sarina told the supervisors. “And what I’m asking for today, after going through all the discussion, would be to give staff direction to proceed with the process of a Chapter 8 agreement and sale with the treasurer/tax collector with the county.” Sarina said such an action would result in having those parcels available to be sold to the State of California for an appraised price and for a public use. “That’s the only reason we could do a Chapter 8 acquisition for public use. It’s very similar to the Border Coast Airport Authority negotiation that was done at the airport,” Sarina said. The supervisors unanimously approved the plan for Sarina and county staff to proceed with the sale.

Halloween Happenings

The goblins and ghouls were out - and avoiding mischief – at a variety of Halloween events throughout Crescent City on Thursday night. Hundreds of families appeared in character during the annual Trunk and Treat event at the California Highway Patrol headquarters. Organizations opened up their vehicles for a safe trick-or-treating experience for all ages. In addition, the Foursquare Church welcomed the community to its Harvest Festival featuring games, food and fun. Pennywise stepped off the silver screen to spook any brave-hearted visitors to Dave’s Haunted Mansion. And Sutter Coast Hospital and KPOD Radio hosted their 27th-annual Halloween Blood Drive. Del Norte drill team dances with clinics By Jessica Goddard Staff Writer

The Drill Team Del Norte saw a large turnout Tuesday for their biannual Kids Dance Clinic at the Del Norte High School football field. Over 40 children, from kindergarten through eighth grade, attended the event from 5:30-7 p.m. Led by drill team members, kindergarten through third graders learned simpler, age-appropriate routines. The fourth through eighth graders learned a more complicated hip hop routine. “It makes me happy to share dancing. It’s a passion of mine to share that and maybe spark some of that,” said Lylee Diehl, a sophomore at Del Norte High.

Attendance fluctuates each year, but this year organizers were surprised by how many children showed up, according to Melanie Clifton, the team’s coach. “I think it really depends on the weather,” Clifton said. “So, this is actually a really good turnout for us.” The children learned their routines, then performed them during the Friday football game, the last home game of the season. The clinic is one of the drill team’s many efforts to raise money throughout the year for their annual dance camp. Every summer, the team takes a trip to a college campus, stays in the dorms, and learns dance routines they then perform during the varsity basketball season. Last year, the team went to Long Beach State University. “It’s a big opportunity for the members to go to a university... It gives them that sparkle in their eye when they see what dorm life could be like, going to college, espe-

Our full-day Tribal Head Start operates Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 3:00pm throughout the school year, serving children three to five years of age. Our full-day, full year Early Learning Center operates Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm throughout the year, serving children two years, nine months to five years of age. The primary purpose of H.E.L.P. is to ensure our preschool aged children are prepared for school and have the opportunity learn the Tolowa language and culture. H.E.L.P. has a comprehensive program that serves the whole family and open to our local community. Minimum Qualifications: 1. A B.A Degree in Childhood Education or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience teaching head start/preschool age children. 2.
