or Chad Welch, it was a perfect night. At least when he went on a streak most bowlers only dream about. Playing with his Crook Creek #1 teammates, the man with a 15 handicap found perfection on an alley in the Elusive Pocket. The bowling alley got its name from a description of that “pocket” which strikes all of the pins down, according to owner Ardis Kraulik. But for Welch, it was no longer that elusive. For more than a game in his Mixed Commercial League game in Bowman Jan. 29, he pounded out strike after strike after strike by hitting the “elusive pocket” repeatedly. According to Welch, there wasn’t any warning of his hot streak when he was warming up before the game. “It was coming off my hand really nice … but that has happened plenty of times. You just never think that it is going to be ‘the’ night, I guess.” The man with a 183 average wasn’t too surprised when he got off to a good start. He said that he has bowled six strikes in a row before. “When I got to the ninth (frame), I thought ...’Man I am getting close,’” he recalled. “Something is going to screw it up.”

he big game Sunday in Amidon was more than on the two televisions showing off the battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. It was also home to a wild game feast – a competition and challenge for who could cook up the best wild game dish. The game within the game at Mo’s Bunker Bar brought in more than a dozen people – which is a large crowd for a town of less than 20 people. Starting as a pre-game exercise in the afternoon people brought dishes like venison stir-fry, Antelope stroganoff, venison sausage with sauerkraut, deer sausage with barbecue sauce and venison summer sausage with cheese, according to owner Anna Allard. “We’ve had pot lucks. We have had game feeds. But we have never had them on the same day as the Super Bowl,” she said as the second half was getting ready to start and all the people had just finished watching the halftime show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. One of the most popular dishes was a jalapeno popper wrapped in wild boar bacon and filled with cream cheese, she added.

he Bowman Lions Club held a Soup and Sandwich benefit for a local child on Super Bowl Sunday and the response was not surprising to Father Paul Eberle. “I have never seen a community like this come together for our own from the mayor on down,” he said Sunday afternoon as the cleanup started in the United Methodist Church. “It is a whole different world here,” he said, noting that the response has been like no other community he has worked in. The benefit Sunday was to raise money for Olivia Frie’s medical expenses. She is the four-year old daughter of Todd and Kristina Frie. According to the Lions chair for the event, Chuck Whitney, about 300 people participated in the Super

According to Whitney, the benefit raised thousands to help defray the medical expenses of the Frie family. There were also about 50 volunteers who helped

to organize and put on the benefit, Whitney added. On the menu at the event were a variety of soups and chili, along with turkey and ham sandwiches.

The Lion also had a full dessert tray set up for the attendees, which included cranberry bars and other baked snacks.

of our Community. There are several “key” Lions who jointly can take credit for beginning the tradition, and certainly among those would be our Charter President Roger Walter, our long time Gaming Treasurer Don Groll and our current Tail Twister Tom Nordberg. The original idea was to

provide a service to the sports fan getting ready to watch the big game, but it quickly became one of our club’s premier fund raisers. Usually, the recipient of the proceeds had medical needs, but there have been few times when there have been overwhelming non medical expenses as well.”

To Whitney, it was an easy decision for the Lions Club to hold the benefit. “Young Olivia, nearly 4, has had, so far, unexplained seizures, causing not only a great deal of concern but also expense. She had the pleasure of seeing Mini Mouse earlier this summer and at once decided that not only was Mini her favorite, but the pink dress was really kind of special too, making the “theme” of this year’s event and its color selection a no-brainer,” he said. It took a big effort to pull of the benefit, but Whitney said he had a lot of help. “Some 19 Lions donated collectively 129 hours to set up, prepare the food, serve it and clean up af-

Simultaneously, a Silent Auction was held and between the Free Will Offering and the Auction a goodly amount of money was raised. “We had some amazing help from unexpected quarters, as the Methodist Ladies did the initial dining area set up, provided bars and helped serve them. The Rhame CCD youth led by Maretta Hendrickson were tremendous help keeping the water, lemonade and coffee pitchers/pots full. These kids also helped with cleaning tables after our patrons were finished. “The Sandwich Crew led by Lion Tom Nordberg began their day well before 9:00 am and the rest of the club sprinkled in between

9 a.m. and 11 a.m. when the actual benefit began. Our members brought the multiple soups needed to hit the spot and the club supplied ice cream and toppings. As a testimonial to how many people this young family has touched since coming to Bowman, we had a continuous flow of people from before 11 a.m. until well after 12:30 p.m. “The generosity of our Community certainly comes to the fore as the line of people waiting to be served made an exact head count challenging,” he said, adding that he estimated more than 300 people served and visited during the benefit.

Carla Teske (left) of the Scranton Branch has been promoted to Assistant Vice President and Personal Banking Officer. She has been employed at DWB for 17 years. Beth Criswell, a loan officer in the Bowman-North Branch, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President. Beth began her career at Dakota Western Bank in May 2015. On January 30,2020, The Arc, Little Missouri, Inc. sells their 101 North Main Street building to ABLE, Inc. which houses the REPEAT OUTLET store, Recycling business, and work areas where ABLE’s unique line of products are created. The Arc purchased this building (formerly the Gate City Bank) on January 15, 1993 to provide more workspace for ABLE which had been located where APEX Energy and Framefully Yours are now. Then on 9-28-10 The Arc approved construction to expand the building by adding 2000 additional square feet. This was completed in May of 2012. ABLE and The Arc have enjoyed a great partnership all these years, in fact ABLE has rented workspace from The Arc since October 1, 1984.

ebruary 1, 2020 the Bowman Fire Department had their annual meeting. During this meeting we had election of officers. All officers have a one-year term and are voted on at every annual meeting. We have great equipment and gear that we continue to upgrade to protect our fireman and our community. We have a very experienced crew that is always training new members and making sure we operate safe at incidents we respond to. The North Dakota Firefighters Association recognizes firefighters as honorary members if they

serve on a department for 20 years or more. The Bowman Fire Department currently has 8 firemen that are honorary members for years of service. This year our most experienced member, Kevin Bagley, is celebrating 30 years of service with the Bowman Fire Department. Looking back at 2019 Incidents… In 2019 the Bowman Fire Department was called to 36 incidents. • 7 Structure Fires • 14 Auto Extrication/ Vehicle Fires • 4 Wildland Fires • 8 Smoke Detector/CO Detector Calls • 3 Gas Leak/Haz-Mat

Calls Just a few things we accomplished in 2019… • Purchased new hand held radios for every fireman for better on scene communications • Purchased a new cab and chassis to update our 1984 International pumper/ tanker • Upgraded the pump and tank on one of our older wildland units • Purchased 400 feet of 5” suction hose to better move water from hydrant to scene

• Completed auto extrication recertification • Participated in many community events Bowman Fire Department along with our neighboring departments will be hosting the 2021 NDFA State Convention. We are expecting approximately 350 fireman and their wives to be visiting our community for this event. The theme of our convention is going to focus on the 20-year anniversary of 911. A 911 traveling museum “Never Forget” will be here the en-

tire weekend. Joe Torrillo, a firefighter that responded to the twin towers in New York City during the attacks will be our guest speaker. Both events will be open to the public and we encourage everyone to attend. he Bowman County Beach wrestlers finished up their last regular season tournament in New Salem this past weekend at the EastWest Tournament. This tournament gives the wrestlers the opportunity to meet up with teams across the state before heading into the actual state tournament in a few weeks. Undefeated Four Winds Minnewaukan (12-0) held the top spot just ahead of Rugby (13-1), St. John (11-1) and Richland (10-1). However two tough games may make some changes in the rankings â€“ especially if the Bulldogs can knock off their ranked foes. The Bulldogs faced tenth-ranked Dickinson Trinity Tuesday in Dickinson. BOWLING Âť FROM PAGE1 kind of quiet. Nobody said a whole lot, which was a good thing. Everybody just continued bowling, which was really good. Nobody stopped bowling to watch or anything.... but when I threw the last ball, everybody cheered so I knew they were watching.â€? According to Welch, it seemed every bowler there came over to shake his hand, postponing the rest of the bowler from finishing up for a couple of minutes. â€œIt took awhile before they could continue to bowl,â€? he added. The team will be finishing up the league season by mid-March, he explained. â€œOur team won 24-11 that night,â€? he said. â€œWe were in third place, so that should have moved us up (in the team standings). I havenâ€™t even looked.â€? He admitted he had a best score of 289 years ago. In his second game of

the night, he continued the streak for four more frames until he ended up with three pins standing. â€œSo I had 16 in a row.â€? The bowler with a 15 handicap finished the night with scores of 186 and 187, to average 225 for his three games. â€œThat will definitely bring my handicap down.â€? His team also won the competition Jan. 29 at the Elusive Pocket. He admitted being a little superstitious and wanting to do everything the same the next time he would be playing. â€œI am very superstitious. Iâ€™ll wear the same everything.â€? Welch said he has been bowling in Bowman for more than 10 years and with the same Crooked Creek #1 team (Ron Braaten, Lanny Anderson, Bob Osendorf and Jim Schaeffer). He also said he was using his personal bowling

ball during the streak â€“ a Roto-Grip Wreck-Em. According to the owner, it was the first time she knew of a perfect game being bowled there. Welch got started bowl-

ing when he subbed for his father long ago, he recalled. â€œThe older guys just started retiring off the team. Then we end up with the team weâ€™ve got.â€? The Bowman native

works at Continental Resources, a midstream oil producer. The next league season

will start in September, the president of the local bowling association said.
