Area schools recognized for 100 years of continuous accreditation

his year, Bowman County School District and Rhame Elementar y School were recognized for maintaining 100 years of continuous accreditation from Cognia and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. According to Mitch Strand, the elementar y principal for both the Bowman County School District and Rhame Elementar y School, the accreditation process is aimed at improving student performance. To earn accreditation, schools have to be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and meet certain standards. Last year, four educators visited both the Bowman and Rhame schools to obser ve classes and inter view school faculty and parents. After their evaluation, they gave specific feedback to the schools on what they were doing well and what they could be improve upon.

elieve it or not, alien life forms invaded Scranton on Nov. 22. The strange creatures were discovered at the Scranton Public School annual play, No Signs of Intelligent Life. There, Scranton’s junior students put their acting skills to the test and performed a comedy play for the public based on aliens trying to blend into earth society. For over a month, Director Jennifer Riemann and Codirector Terri Bergquist helped the junior students practice their parts and prepare for last Friday’s performance. “In the play, the aliens are undercover on earth,” said Riemann. “What ends up happening is that the aliens end up having a bunch of weird and awkward encounters while trying to fit into everyday life.” According to Riemann, performing an annual play has been a long-standing tradition for junior students at Scranton Public School. fter months of nearly record setting rains, farmers have finally gotten a reprieve. Over the month of November, the southwest region of North Dakota has received below average precipitation for the month, allowing crops to dry and producers to get into their fields for a late harvest. According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Nathan Heinert, over the past 30 days, the region has received a half-inch below normal precipitation, and temperatures have been slightly below normal. Marching into December, Heinert said the Climate Prediction Center expects the below average precipitation trend to continued. Currently, the forecast predicts a high chance for above average precipitation and equal chances for above or below average temperatures. So what is considered average for the month of December? Heinert said that the

“Last year we passed,” said Strand. “One of the things they said was outstanding was our ability to develop positive relationship with our students.” In their assessment, educators also acknowledged a positive student and teacher culture at the school. On the other hand, professional development and technology integration were labeled as opportunities to improve on. “They helped steer our professional development plan for our teacher, so when we have early dismissals, we have profession development for our staff,” he said. “Otherwise, two of our focuses this year include focusing on technology use and active learning.” In response to the assessment, the Bowman High School added science technology, engineering, and math

(STEM) classes this year and STEM days in the elementar y. Strand said that in 1918 when both schools were accredited, schools were not required to go through the accreditation process. Instead, the schools volunteered for the accreditation process to create better learning atmosphere willingly. “It showed that the administration, the school board, and staff back then were really dedicated to offering the best education for our students,” said Strand. “Today we still have that same mission: To give ever y student the best education to succeed in a changing world.” He continued, “This recognition really represents not just the current staff, but ever yone that has worked at the Rhame and Bowman schools over the years. It shows the excellence that both those school have offered over the past 100 years and will hopefully continue to offer in years to come.”

n Play Continued from Page A1 intent of the play was to help students try new things and “get out of their comfort zone.” “It’s always the kids that you don’t necessary expect to be into acting that surprise you, and they come out of their shell,” she said. “It’s a chance for students to discover that theater and performance could be a part of their niche.” Although the play was mandatory for the English class, Riemann said that every student was engaged in the project and excited to explore theater. “This year was such a fun group of kids,” she said. “They had a lot of fun getting into their goofy alien characters.” This year seven students, the entire Scranton junior class, participated as actors. Due the limited class size, the students performed multiple roles in the play and other students from other grades helped as

Guest Columnist Hello, Shirley says to, “Tell everyone Happy Thanksgiving”! So there, that is from both of us. I hope you had a great day, or several days with family and friends. The diet after Thanksgiving begins now. Many of my friends from years ago remember the years I served in the State Senate. I did a tenyear sentence during the eighties and early nineties. During my time, I never saw a gaming bill that I didn’t like. Maybe it was because agriculture is

such a gamble anyway, that to risk a few dollars on the turn of a card or a roll of the dice is much less of a gamble than seeding wheat or turning a bull out with a bunch of cows. I liked lottery bills, blackjack bills, and poker bills. A couple years ago, a friend from those years called and needed assistance. He wanted me to call a couple of current legislators and urge them to support electronic pull-tab machines. For those not familiar with these, they are a close relative of slot machines. Even down to the “Ding-ding-ding”! I did my friend the favor and we now have e-pull-tab machines in a lot of places. Fast forward to last week. I sometimes stop at a local establishment in mid or late afternoon to visit with friends. One of these friends we refer to as “Wyoming Bob”. Wyoming Bob is a rancher from Wyoming who is also a mechanic that followed the “boom” to Dickinson. He is a rancher, a mechanic, and a barbecue master. He is world famous.

PASTOR'S CORNER: Family PASTOR RAY SHERWOOD When I think of the holidays my mind goes back to Thanksgiving meals with my family and how we would thank God for his goodness and mercy to us! On the third Thursday morning of the month I have a meeting with my fellow pastors here in Bowman. It is a ver y special group of men and women and to be quite honest, probably one of the most united ministerial associations I have ever been associated with in my 27 years of being a pastor. This morning was one of those Thursdays. We are a motley group with a husband and wife co-pastoring (Lutheran), a couple of young guys (Adventist and Apostolic) who just started in ministr y a year ago, a priest who doesn’t mind not being called Father and always seems to have a smile on his face, an Assemblies pastor who has been in ministr y for about 17 years and me…kind of the old guy who just started his 27th year of ministr y in June. The cool thing about this is we are a family… yeah, a bunch of men and women who had never met until last July and in Januar y! Isn’t that amazing that a bunch of pastors from many different denominations would call themselves family? I am of the mind that we as church goers have two families… we have our personal

family, our spouse, our children, our brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, in-laws and out-laws, etc. These are people we spend holidays with and those sometimes, dreaded family reunions. Perhaps you don’t get to see them as often as you did when you were younger but no matter you are still family! The other family is our “spiritual” family. Those people whom we have come to love and appreciate in our church. I remember growing up in East Central Indiana when we would call our church family, “brother and sister” and then whatever their first name was! Those days have kind of by passed us, but we are still family. I think Bill and Gloria Gather put music to the words they penned in a song called, “The Family of God.” We have a blood connection with our personal family but we also, have a “blood connection” with our spiritual family as well. You know we have squabbles in our personal families, and we have them in our spiritual families too. We are all different individuals with different takes on things! If we look closely enough we will see that some of us are quite passive and others can be quite aggressive, but we are still family. Through all of life we are always part of a family…personal or spiritual but we are a family. I kind of think God had it planned

that way because when we lose our personal family, we still have our spiritual family in which we can lean on. My wife, Brenda, and I have just returned from Indiana after 18 days because of her father, Ted, passing away at 88. I will tell you that our personal families are ver y dear to us and will always be, but to know you have a spiritual family that is both keeping watch of your home and praying for you is what spiritual families are about. To return home and know your spiritual family is there ready to do whatever to let you know you are important is amazing. That is what I have in my church and I am thankful for my spiritual family! As I have entered into my 60’s I realize that both families are important. I will tell you that I have spiritual families as well as personal family being stretched over America. But the awesome thing is that as a spiritual family we are part of a much greater family… the Family of God. I hope and pray that you love both your families because one day if we stay true to Him, we will spend eternity together and that folks is an awesome thing to consider and it is the ultimate family reunion!! From my personal and spiritual family… Happy Thanksgiving!

Braaten made a motion to declare the 1999 140H Motor Grader as surplus property, with Buchmann seconding the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried. Braaten made a motion to accept the low bid submitted by RDO for $322,125, less the trade-in value of $60,000 for the 1999 140H Motor Grader, for a total purchase price of $262,125.00 for a 2020 AWD Motor Grader with the Falls Postless Wing Joystick controlled. Abrahamson seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried. Jeffers made a motion to approve the Talbot Township gravel request for approximately 1,500 cubic yards, with the township responsible for fifty percent of the cost. Braaten seconded the motion. Discussion was held on the 152nd Avenue SW Road Improvement – Griffin Road project. The project was scheduled to have a completion date of November 1, 2019; however, it was decided to put it into winter suspension. Liquidated damages will be suspended November 1, 2019 and will resume when the county load restrictions are lifted or work commences, whichever occurs first. Once the county load restrictions are lifted or work commences, whichever occurs first, liquidated damages will commence, at a rate of $2,500 per day. If completed by August 15, 2020, a maximum of 20 days will be assessed. In the event that the project is not completed by this date, liquidated damages will be assessed back to the date that load restrictions are removed and will be applied in full. above terms, with Abrahamson seconding the motion. Star Township Clerk/Treasurer David Anderson met to discuss culverts needed for a township road project. The county will provide the culverts. Bowman County Development Corporation Executive Director Teran Doerr, Finance and Administrative Coordinator Kristi Blaser, Board Secretary Duane Bowman and Casey Hande, owner of Badlands Wealth Management met to discuss the façade grant program, which is administered by the Bowman County Development Corporation. The county approved $20,000 in 2019 for the program. They are requesting an additional $10,000 to meet the needs of all three-grant applicants. Braaten made a motion to approve $10,000 from the State Aid fund, with Abrahamson seconding the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye motion carried. Braaten made a motion to approve the October 2019 MonthEnd Bureau of Land Management Report, with Jeffers seconding the motion, and upon a vote, the motion was carried unanimously. CITY OF BOWMAN BIDS FOR CLEANING SERVICES The City of Bowman is accepting bids for the weekly cleaning of Bowman City Hall and the Joint City/County Shop for the year 2020. Bids shall be for the monthly cost to clean City Hall and a monthly cost to clean the Joint Shop, bid separately. All services must be completed during non-business hours, on weekends and around the meeting room schedule (City Hall). Bids must be enclosed in a sealed envelope marked: City Hall Cleaning Bid, Joint Shop Cleaning Bid, or list both if bidding on both buildings. Bid specs may be picked up at the City Auditor’s office during regular office hours. Questions should be directed to the City Auditor office at 523-3309. Bids will be accepted until December 30, 2019, at 12:00 pm. Bids will be opened at the regular Commission meeting on December 30, 2019 at 4:30 pm. Further research has been done regarding surveillance cameras for the city.
