Thunderstorms, high temperatures in region’s future Staff Report

Severe thunderstorms may bring large hail, damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes from the Northern Plains to the Upper Midwest early in the week, but the conditions are ripe for the weather to continue to harshly treat North Dakota, according to the Bismarck office of the National Weather Service. According to a release from Bismarck, the region faces a stormy future, with some sizzling thrown in on the weekend. “A frontal boundary over the northern Plains will continue to act as a focus for showers and thunderstorms for the next couple of days as it moves into the Great Lakes. “Some of the thunderstorms may become severe from eastern Montana eastward into Minnesota. Some isolated flash flooding may occur in areas that see heavier rain rates. To the east of this system, very warm temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s will be common across the Midwest,” the short term forecast predicted Monday. More thunderstorms are predicted to hit the area Friday evening. Temperatures are predicted to range from the mid 80s to the mid 90s through Sunday.

Fireworks, parade put colorful hue in Marmarth celebration Marmarth’s population more than doubled over the Independence Day weekend when the small Slope County community near North Dakota’s border with Montana celebrated the Fourth of July with games, music, a parade and rodeo. The rodeo was held in the nearby Little Missouri Saddle Club rodeo arena on the west edge of town, with slack starting in the morning and the regular events kicking off in the late afternoon. After the parade, the celebration continued on Main Street, with some spectators celebrating with water wars to beat the 85 degree weather, then later holding a concert and dancing with the fireworks show. The fireworks also shared the sky with a lightning show followed by rain in Marmarth. According to Dennis Rice, pastor of the Marmarth Bible Church in Marmarth, it was a good celebration with a strong pa-

triotic theme. “It was a better turnout than I thought there was going to be. I think the weather cooperated quite a bit with that,” he said as he cooked hamburgers and brats in front of his church. “It was probably a couple of hundred (spectators).” He had a good view from the large truck which participated in the parade and was draped in flags with a strong patriotic theme. Even a thunderstorm Friday evening helped to clean off Main Street for the big Fourth of July celebration Saturday. Rice and his church also celebrated the holiday with free hamburgers and brats after the parade on 1st Avenue W, with the pastor cooking up lunch for the visitors who stopped by and sat on the furniture in the front yard. The rodeo also drew hundreds to the small community Saturday.

Bowman draws big blank in COVID drive up testing Staff Report

The first COVID-19 drive up testing in Bowman County drew hundreds to the fairgrounds Tuesday. It also drew a big blank. Zero. Zed. Nil. After the testing was completed and the results released, Bowman County’s total remained the same as it has for months – one positive case of Coronavirus. There were zero positives when it was finished after the cloudburst drenched the testers all day June 30. According to the Bowman County Public Health Office, 287 people were processed through testing

tents in the parking lot of the Bowman County Fairgrounds by local health officials with assistance from the North Dakota National Guard and state health department. Still, the states as a whole watch the numbers continue to rise. By Sunday, the death toll connected to the COVID-19 pandemic was at 80 for the state. Regionally, only Adams County to the east and Golden Valley to the north has yet to have a positive case from the testing. There are only four counties in the state, which have not recorded any positive results this year.

Both Bowman’s one and Slope’s three positives were recorded several months ago. According to ND response, the July 5 testing reported that Cass County had the most new positives (11), followed by Burleigh (9), Williams (4) and Stark (3). The testing results show an upward trajectory of positives in the state, with 37 reported positives of the 3,816 total tests announced July 5. Since testing began, the state has completed 201,303 tests by July 5, with 113,128 unique individuals. In addition, the state has 3,324 who are listed as recovered by health officials so far.

Obituary Wayne Erickson, 65

Graveside services for Wayne Erickson, 65, of Dickinson, will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11 at Tuttle Cemetery in Rhame, ND. A second graveside service will be take place at 2 p.m. Monday, July 13 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Dickinson. A reception will follow the committal service at the Heart River Retreat in Dickinson – 2475 Broadway West. For those attending please adhere to social distancing guidelines established by the Department of Health. Wayne passed away March 20, 2020 at Sanford Health in Bismarck surround by family. Wayne Rodger Erickson was born July 13, 1955 in Baker, MT to Lester and LuElla Erickson. He grew up in the Bowman/ Rhame area. He custom combined for various farms before starting his trucking career. Wayne worked at Black Hills

Trucking for 14 years before owning and operating his own truck. He retired with Martin Construction in 2019 after working there for nine years. He married Susie McNeil on July 31, 1986 in Medora. Together the couple had five children; Alison, Melisa, Linsey, Katie and John. Wayne enjoyed camping with family and friends, playing league pool for the Eagles and riding ATV in the black hills. He had a passion for circle track racing, and never missed watching his son race at Southwest Speedway. Wayne is survived by his wife, Susie of Dickinson; children, Alison (Eric) Mclain of Dickinson, Melisa (Brian) Frank of Dickinson, Linsey (Justin) Sickler of Dickinson, Katie Kabel of Peoria, AZ and John (Emalee) Erickson of Dickinson; grandchildren, Taylor, Jaycee, Kinnley, Hudson, Abigail, Brandon, Mason and Aubree; great-grandson, Grayson; brother, Jim (Carol) of Apache, AZ, Elief (JoAnn) of Quartzsite, AZ; and sister, Julie Erickson of Wheeling, IL. Governor Burgum addresses Pipeline order

Governor Doug Burgum issued the following statement after U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg ordered the Dakota Access Pipeline to shut down by Aug. 5 while an environmental impact statement is completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “This troubling decision, which we expect will be appealed, could have devastating effects on North Dakota’s economy and U.S. energy security. No one cares more about North Dakota’s clean water than the people who live here, and if a single judge is able to shut down a state-of-the-art pipeline project that was permitted and has been operating safely for more than three years, it would have a chilling effect on America’s ability to build, modernize and improve our nation’s critical infrastructure, which we need to do for both energy security and environmental stewardship.”

Bowman holds Bowman hosts Badlands Classic demolition derby Open Livestock Show The 2020 Demolition Derby will be held Saturday, July 18, at the Bowman County Fairgrounds in the Dakota Winds Outdoor Arena. There will be a $10 gate fee. The event will be starting at 3 p.m. There will be a $4,000 purse. During the final heat there will be an opportunity for people to bid on their favorite derby driver. There will be concessions and beer sales.

Burgers in the Park set for July 16

The July edition of the Burgers in the Park will be held July 16 in Bowman City Park. The even will run from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. On the menu will be burgers, chips, watermelon, beans and water. The price is $7. The August event is scheduled for August 20, according to officials.

ABATE sets up toy drive ride for an early Christmas Staff Report

There may not be Christmas in August, but don’t tell the members of the District 12 ABATE motorcyclists. They are each just trying to get an early start on being Santa Claus... on two wheels. The American Bikers Aiming Toward Education will be holding its 17th annual district toy run - at the same time as a fun run when they meet Aug. 1 at the Windy’s Bar and Pizza in downtown Bowman. Riders participating in the event will be required to bring a new toy in addition to the $20 fee for the ride. According to the district representative, the toys will be do-

nated to local children in need at Christmas time. Fifty percent of the money raised by the riders will go to ABATE. The route starts at 10 a.m. from Windy’s, and then goes to the Pastime restaurant in Marmarth. From there, the riders will proceed to Wibaux in Montana for lunch before returning to North Dakota. The riders will be stopping at the Roughrider in Belfield and Mo’s Bunker Bar in Amidon before returning to Bowman. It will be a 200-mile ride, according to the organizers. The Badlands Classic Open Livestock Show will be held July 18 at the Bowman County Fairgrounds. Entries will close July 10. The event will open at 9 a.m. with swine, sheep, goats and beef. The weigh in will start at 6 a.m. Breeding classes will be followed by market classes. Among the awards at the event will be $150 for the Champion Market hog, lamb and goat. There will be $75 for the Reserve Champion Market hog, lamb and goat. There is also the $250 Champion Market Steer and Breeding Heifer, the $150 Reserve Champion Market Steer and Breeding. The classes will be jackpotted, according to organizers. There is a $10 entry fee for

swine and sheep ($15 late entry). The entry for the beef competition is $30 ($40 for late entry). According to officials, no animals with evidence of illness or disease will be allowed. In addition, entrants will be asked to follow current guidelines from the state. There will be no barn access. The livestock will be shown from the entrant’s trailer. The people exhibiting will also to clean up their area of any straw, chips, bedding and manure brought in or the livestock creates. There will be no concessions at the location. Local office hosts crop tour near Scranton

The Bowman office of the North Dakota State Extension Service will be holding crops tour July 21 in Scranton. The event is sponsored by Scranton Equity, the Bowman County Crop Improvement Association and the Hettinger Research Extension Center. According to a spokesman for the tour, HREC agronomist John Rickertsen will be presenting variety trials. The event will start at 6 p.m. with participants meeting at the NDSU Research Plots about four miles north of Scranton.

Larks and Farmers Union Insurance Giveaway Bismarck – On June 24, the Bismarck Larks and Farmers Union Insurance held a jersey giveaway to help feed their community. The event raised 2,392 pounds of food with $256 donated. These donations will provide 2,761 meals for the Great Plains Food Bank. Even though it was only required to give two nonperishable food items to get a jersey, many donate much more. “It’s amazing,” said Kevin Ressler, Chief Sales, Marketing and Branding Officer for Farmers Unions Insurance. “Most people don’t just bring two cans

of food for their jersey, they really have giving hearts and are wanting to make sure we feed the hungry in the community.” To promote safety, fans donated their nonperishables for the specialty jersey by means of a drive thru at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. In true North Dakotan fashion, there was a long line of cars outside the event a half hour before it began. All 1,000 of the specialty jerseys were given away. Aviation unit receives alert A North Dakota Army National Guard unit has received an alert for possible mobilization. If ordered to mobilize, the Bismarck-based Company C, 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment, would deploy to the National Capital Region (NCR) area late in 2020. The unit consists of about 70 soldiers and operates the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. If mobilized, their anticipated mission would be transport of personnel and light cargo within the NCR area. “We are extremely proud of the professionalism of our Army aviators,” said Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann, North Dakota adjutant general. “They have a safe operating record of nearly 150,000 flight hours dating back to 1958 and have been instrumental in support of state and

federal missions to include flood response, wildfire fighting, search and rescue missions and have successfully served overseas.” The unit is led by Capt. Robert Sorenson and 1st Sgt. Mitch McCoy. Company C, 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment was previously deployed to Kosovo in support of peacekeeping operations from Nov. 2013 to Dec. 2014 and to Iraq Oct. 2009 to Sept. 2010. Other support provided by the North Dakota Army National Guard to the NCR were two mobilizations that assisted in the protection of airspace by the Grand Forks-based 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment from May 2017 to April 2018 and May 2013 to April 2014.

corder Jan Werre, Bowman County Sheriff Frank Eberle and Administrative Assistant Bonnie Stinchfield, Bowman County Treasurer Anita McLaughlin, and Courthouse Maintenance Director David Horn met to discuss the courthouse health and safety protection measures due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Germann reported that she completed a survey of courthouse staff. The Motor Vehicle Branch office must continue to assist guest by appointment only as the North Dakota Department of Transportation will not allow offices to be opened. Also, the North Dakota Extension Office must remain closed at this time. In order to meet the State of North Dakota required mandates, the courthouse will continue to assist guests by appointment only. The commissioners will review the current policy at their next meeting on June 23, 2020. North Dakota Association of Counties Assistant Executive Director of Policy-Legal Counsel Aaron Birst joined the meeting at 11:00 AM via telephone conference. Present for the discussion was Bowman County Highway Superintendent Shane Biggs and Brosz Engineering representative Lucas Doerr. Discussion was held on the provision in North Dakota Century Code and the opinion from the North Dakota Attorney General assessing the needs of the townships for culverts. Commissioner Abrahamson joined the meeting, via telephone conference, at 11:18 AM. Braaten made a motion to approve the following revised Resolution for the Adoption of Fees for the Purchase of Gravel, Culverts and Bands, with Abrahamson seconding the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried. WHEREAS, the Bowman County Commission has the authority under N.D.C.C. 11-11-14.4 to establish charges for any county products or other services, and to control the property of the county. BE IT RESOLVED, therefore the Bowman County Commission has adopted the following requirement for the fee assessed for gravel and culverts: GRAVEL Townships and Bowman County residents will be responsible for one hundred (100) percent of the cost of gravel, at the rate that is in effect at the time of purchase. Any township requesting more than 200 cubic yards of gravel, per project, or a resident of Bowman County requesting more than 50 cubic yards of gravel, per project, will be required to obtain approval from the county commission, prior to starting the project. If the request is less than two hundred (200) cubic yards of gravel, per project, for townships or fifty (50) cubic yards of gravel, per project, for a resident of Bowman County, they will be required to obtain approval from the Bowman County Highway Superintendent, prior to starting the project. A resident of Bowman County will be responsible to pay 100% of the cost of gravel, culverts and bands at the rate that is in effect at the time of purchase. Restrictions may be placed on the quality of the gravel requested, based upon the project, as designated on the application submitted by townships or individuals. CULVERTS Township supervisors, and/or contractors, shall be responsible for inspecting each culvert on a project before requesting a new replacement culvert to determine whether it warrants a new replacement or if the existing culvert can be modified or improved to satisfy the project’s needs. The person or persons inspecting the culvert will be required to acknowledge they have looked at the culvert or culverts on the Materials Request Form prior to turning in the request. Failure to do so may result in a delay in getting the request approved. Townships will be required to maintain a minimum of nine (9) mills to be eligible for fifty (50) present cost share of the cost on culverts and bands. It will be the discretion of the township to levy a minimum of nine (9) mills. REQUEST EXPIRES DECEMBER 31ST OF EACH YEAR. Braaten made a motion to approve the request from Goldfield Township to replace existing culverts. The township will be responsible for fifty (50) percent of the culvert cost and the total cost of the installation. Abrahamson seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried. Abrahamson made a motion to pay the charges incurred by Brosz Engineering for the culvert inspection in Goldfield Township. Braaten seconded the motion. A roll call vote was

Braaten made a motion to advertise for gravel crushing bids from the Kelner Pit if an agreement is executed with the owners agreeing to sell an additional 30,000 cubic yards. Abrahamson made a motion to approve Anderson Western’s Change Order No. 3 for the 2018 Road Improvements Project at an increase of $51,929.79, for final quantities. Jeffers seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried. Commissioner Abrahamson departed the meeting at 12:20 PM. At 1:15 PM Chairman Brackel called the Unorganized Township Equalization meeting to order. No guests were present. Freier outlined state mandates and stated that there were not any valuation concerns presented from the floor during the April Equalization meetings. At 1:36 PM Chairman Brackel called the County Equalization meeting to order. No guests were present. Pearson outlined state mandates and stated that there were not any valuation concerns presented from the floor during the April Equalization meetings. Braaten made a motion to approve no change in values, county-wide, for commercial property, a three (3) percent increase in agricultural values, county-wide, and a three (3) percent decrease in the City of Bowman residential values, based upon the City of Bowman’s recommendation. If the application forms that were sent to the owners are not returned to his office, he will contact the property owner to physically assess their residence and place a value on the home, which will then become taxable property, as per state mandate. Braaten made a motion to declare the TM12 Rock-O-Matic Windrower Vin No. T12 202 as surplus property. Buchmann seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried. Commissioner Abrahamson joined the meeting, via telephone conference, at 1:55 PM. Bowman County State’s Attorney Andrew Weiss joined the meeting at 2:00 PM. Dean Pearson was also present for the discussion. Weiss has been contacted by an attorney representing the Able, Inc. Board of Directors and their management team expressing interest on the possibility of purchasing delinquent tax property located in Bowman County. Dakota Datebook Hail and Ancient Pottery deep. The stones were as large as hensâ€™ eggs.â€? Another story that made the front page concerned the discovery of ancient pottery in the area. The report read, â€œTwo miles and a half above Bismarck is the site of an ancient fort. The ground consists of about fifteen acres situated on bluffs, perhaps one hundred feet in height, on the east side of the river. The position seems to have been well fortified, the ditch, the embankment and camping grounds being distinctly marked. The grounds are covered with bones and on every hand may be found specimens of ancient pottery. The vessels [are] fifteen to twenty inches in diameter and perhaps two feet deep.â€? â€œThe patterns were somewhat rude,â€? the story continues, â€œand yet in some instances considerable taste as well as skill was shown in ornamenting. The vessels do not seem to have been burned but dried in the sun, though they are almost as hard as flint. The material seems to be the fine clay which abounds on the Missouri River mixed with, say, pulverized quartz, or something having that appearance.â€? The article goes on to say, â€œThe specimens of pottery are found on the side of the bluffs, in the camp and in many instances five to six inches under ground. It would be interesting to know what parties occupied these grounds and by whom and when this pottery was made. Can any one throw any light on it. J.O. Simmons owns the claim on which the old fort was situated.â€?

July 7, 2020 - The Bismarck Tribune was founded on this date in 1873, but the first issue didnâ€™t come out until a week later, on July 14. It hit the streets with a printed apology; the materials needed for printing the paper were late in arriving, and a lack of supplies forced the editor to leave out some of the advertising he had sold. Among the front-page stories in that first issue was an update on the Yellowstone Expedition, which was traveling under General Custerâ€™s protection. One segment dealt with the difficulty of keeping the different segments of the group together because of rough weather and rising waters. A reporter traveling with the expedition wrote, â€œThe rains of the past week have been a great drawback and prevented the union of the different parties of the expedition and its forward march as a whole. The hail storm which struck this detachment (8th regiment infantry) and engineers a week ago was fearful, and the reports would be incredible did I not see evidence of its effects. â€œAntelopes and a dog were killed. Men were knocked down and rendered black and blue from head to foot, mules and horses made frantic and uncomfortable, and the only surprise is that no more were injured, as but two men were hurt. The hail fell to the depth of three or four inches on the level, and in ravines from one to two feet

July 10, 2020 - Although the railroads are credited for bringing growth and prosperity to many small North Dakota towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was the steamboats that first served as the major Red River lifelines. From the 1870â€™s to about 1885, the steamboat companies platted many communities along the Red River and contributed to the development of the valley. Perhaps no two towns became more prosperous during that time than Frog Point and Caledonia.
