Beach tops Region 7 hoop awards STAFF REPORT

each went into the Region 7 tournament as the top seed and left with three players making the all tournament team and both a player and coach named as the best in the region. They just didn’t win the Region 7 title. The Buccaneers’ Sam Oech was named as the senior player of the year and their coach, Mark Golberg, was named coach of the year.
Oech was joined on the all-tourney team by sophomore Madi Wilhelmi and junior Megan Rising. The team that repeated as the regional tournament champions, Hettinger-Scranton, placed junior Samantha Oase and senior Alyssa Andress on the all-star team. They were joined by freshman Ellie Powell and senior Abby Smyle of Bowman County, along with Heart River’s Laken Jacobson and Caylee Wilkee, New England seniors Molly Rayhorn and Rachelle Kathrein, Beulah’s Kinsey

or some daughters dancing during Sunday’s Daddy Daughter Dance at Bowman Middle School, they kept going while the Dads needed breaks. Others had a chance to teach their fathers some of the latest dance moves popular among the Pre-K to third grade students. The annual event drew fathers and daughters from Bowman, Rhame and surrounding communities for a chance to dress up and dance together for several hours. For Jason Ruggles of Bowman, it was a chance to hit the dance floor with his daughter Lily. “It has been very cool,” he said, as he took a brief break. “It’s been many years,” he added as his daughter coaxed him back on the dance floor. Chad Erickson and his daughter, Claire, came down from Amidon for the event, with the eight-year-old getting a lift about the dance floor in addition to a chance to twirl and spin to the music. To John Wegner of Bowman, the fun was keeping up with his six-year-old daughter, Karsyn, while other Dads retired to the sidelines. The event also had snacks for the daughters to keep their energy levels up, along with prizes that were handed out during some of the breaks between the songs.

Warm weather brings early thaw, flood threat STAFF REPORT

hanks to a warm weather trend, North Dakota may have problems with ice jams and rising river levels, according to emergency managers in the
region. A warming trend is expected to rise through Saturday before wintry temperatures are scheduled to return. Southwestern North Dakota is expected to reach into the 60s Saturday before temperatures fall into the 30s on Sunday. Along the Little Missouri River at Marmarth, the ice is already starting to break up next to the Highway 12 bridge, according to Chuck Lee of the Fallon County Disaster

Pastors Corner: Live Free PASTOR RAY SHERWOOD In today’s culture we find there are many people that are in bondage. There are many types of bondage like physically, emotionally, mentally, financially and spiritual. I do not have time to go through all the different types, so I want to focus on being in spiritual bondage. I shared this story in one of my sermons recently and thought I would share it with you‌the story goes this way: Every Sunday the ducks waddle out of their houses and waddle down the main street to their church. They waddle into the sanctuary and squat in their favorite pew. The duck choir waddles in and takes its place, and the duck minister comes forward
and opens the duck Bible. He reads to them: “Ducks! God has given you wings! With wings you can fly! With wings you can mount up and soar like eagles. No walls can confine you! No fences can hold you! You have wings. God has given you wings you can fly like birds!� All the ducks jumped up and shouted, “Amen!� And then they got up from their favorite pew and waddled home! The ducks realized they could fly but they settled on waddling. This is an amusing story if you really think about it! Ducks that could fly but won’t because they are more comfortable waddling. This story typically reminds me of pheasants
around here. Brenda and I were driving back from Dickinson when a rooster went running to the side of the road and didn’t stop. He ran in front of me as I was trying to slow down and I clipped him. When I arrived at the parsonage there were feathers in my grill. If that rooster had just flown instead of trying to run across the road, I would have missed him. Pheasants that can fly but won’t because they are more comfortable running instead of flying. I can’t help but wonder if we have just become too comfortable with being in spiritual bondage instead of living free spiritual lives. We waddle and run instead of flying. We don’t have to settle for being in spiritual bondage we can be

spiritually free! Jesus tells us in His first sermon, “I came to bring good news.� He said, “I am the truth, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free� (John 8:31-32). In John 8:36, Jesus said, “If the Son will set you free, you will be free indeed.� Paul even tells us in Galatians 5:1, “Freedom is what we have. Christ has set us free.� Jesus has promised us real and lasting freedom! He has given us freedom from the lies of the enemy, who would try to get us to believe we are disappointments, failures, nobodies and unlovable.
Jesus told us he came to give us freedom and He is able to set us free because He has dealt with the sin that enslaves us! The church I grew up in sang a hymn called Glorious Freedom. The lyrics go this way: Once I was bound by sin’s galling fetters; Chained like a slave I struggled in vain. But I received a glorious freedom when Jesus broke my fetters in twain. Glorious Freedom! Wonderful Freedom! No more in chains of sin I repine! Jesus, the glorious Emancipator – now and forever He shall be mine. Today and I mean this very
day‌you can be free and not in bondage! When Satan starts whispering in your ear that you are a disappointment, a failure, a nobody and unlovable remember that you are a child of God! There is a mantra that says, “When Satan starts reminding you of your past‌remind him of his future!â€? The only hope we have is in Christ and His power to break the sins of spiritual bondage. His blood on Calvary became the catalyst for our redemption. Make that choice to be free of your spiritual bondage today and fly like an eagle!

New printer brings new look to Pioneer Bowman officer best in state

There will be a new look to the Bowman County Pioneer. Starting with the March 6 issue, the Pioneer will be printed in Montana at a Miles City printer. “Our paper is being printed in Miles City now. The Bowman County Pioneer will be a little bit larger, and only contain four color pages. Please be patient as we grow through the changes,� said Casandra Horn, the officer manager in Bowman. The newspaper had been printed by the Dickinson Press, but that company recently announced they would no longer be printing newspapers in Dickinson as it transitioned to
A Bowman police officer received a “Top Gun� award for scoring the highest average in a recent statewide drug recognition expert training program. Because of his success, Trevor Bergerson earned a trip to Jacksonville, Fla., for a final knowledge exam. After completion, Bergerson and the others will be officially certified as drug recognition experts, joining the approximately 50 others throughout North Dakota. The class of 13 officers were selected from about 20 applicants. They all passed the course, but

Obituary Duane David Brown
Duane David Brown was born September 11, 1934, in Bowman, North Dakota to Herbert and Louise (Smith) Brown. He was the second child of the Brown family and has eight siblings including Marlene (Mrnak), Sharon (Bliss), Carol (Ziebarth), Gary, Verlin, Shirley (Clemmons), Jeanette (Nelson) and Marvin. Duane grew up on the family farm and attended school in Scranton, ND. Upon graduation in 1952, he continued his education at Wartburg College, Waverly IA. After graduating from Wartburg College with a degree in English, he enrolled at Wartburg Seminary in
Dubuque, IA with plans to pursue a life in the ministry. After a few semesters at Seminary,

Duane was a long-time member of Peace Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and helped with the Sunday School
program. Duane loved to travel and while a high school teacher at New London, he was selected for two Fulbright exchange teacher positions which allowed him to work and live in England (Didsbury) and Denmark (Greve). His great joys in life included his family, time with friends and colleagues at the coffee shop, the Twins, and a good book. Duane is survived by his wife, Sharon, children-Eric (Di-

TALKING POINTS: Reaching Rural and Remote Areas for the 2020 Census
The U.S. Census Bureau goes to great lengths to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place. Just as in previous censuses, the Census Bureau has an outreach strategy specifically tailored to reach rural and remote households to ensure everyone is counted in the 2020 Census. The 2020 Census will be the first time most people living in the United States can choose to respond online, by phone, or by mail. The Census Bureau and its partners are supporting rural areas with low or no internet access to ensure these communities can respond to the census. • The Census Bureau will mail 20 percent of the country a paper questionnaire with the initial invitation to respond. • Beginning in midMarch, the Census Bureau will mail paper questionnaires to areas with low Internet connectivity or other characteristics that make them less likely to respond online. These areas will also receive information about how to respond online or by phone. • By mid-April, all households that have not yet responded will receive a paper

Applications are open for the 2020-growing season The Foundation for Agriculture and Rural Resources Management and Sustainability (FARRMS), is accepting applications to their Sustainable Agriculture Internship in North Dakota. DAPL Optimization Key to North Dakota’s Energy Potential BY CRAIG STEVENS North Dakota is home to one of the country’s most prolific oil formations: the Bakken. The Bakken has increased the state’s oil production to 1.44 million barrels per day and could grow to more than 2 million barrels per day if transportation bottlenecks are addressed. In a significant step towards progress, the North Dakota Public Service Commission (PSC) recently approved a
proposal to construct a pump station in Emmons County as part of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) Optimization effort. DAPL Optimization – which has the support of nearly 70% of North Dakota residents – would increase the pipeline’s capacity to 1.1 million barrels of oil per day. With no new mainline construction needed, the Optimization project would usher in valuable economic opportunities to the state and ensure safe, reliable transport for record oil
production to reach consumers. From 2015-2018, DAPL paid North Dakota nearly $25 million in sales and property taxes, and the Optimization project will only increase tax revenues for local services such as school, emergency services and other community needs. By increasing the pipeline’s capacity, DAPL will bolster American energy security and strengthen U.S. national security and our ability to stabilize the global energy market in the process.
North Dakota’s commitment to the energy industry has secured high-skilled jobs, economic benefits for local communities, and energy security for the United States and its allies. North Dakota and South Dakota have already recognized DAPL’s energy potential – hopefully Illinois and Iowa will do the same. Game and Fish News Deadline to Remove Fish Houses Anglers are reminded all unoccupied fish houses must be removed from all waters beginning March 15 until ice-out. Fish houses may be used after March 15 if they are removed daily. Anglers are advised to use caution while accessing area lakes because mild weather conditions can quickly result in unstable ice conditions that can make removing a fish house with a vehicle difficult or dangerous. Ice conditions can vary from region to region, between lakes in the same region, and even on the same lake.
Game and Fish Offers Wildlife Food Plot Seed The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is offering free seed for the 2020 growing season to landowners who are interested in planting wildlife food plots for pheasants. Private land section leader Kevin Kading said rather than a traditional corn or sunflower food plot, Game and Fish is offering a seed mix that provides increased plant diversity, in-
cluding flowering plants from spring through fall, which will attract insects, the major diet component of pheasant chicks. Additionally, he said the mix will provide needed cover during spring and summer, as well as a winter food source. Other wildlife species will also benefit from this mix. “Most Game and Fish food plots are part of the department’s Private Land Open To Sportsmen program,” Kading said. “This food plot campaign does not require a PLOTS contract, but we are asking participating landowners to allow reasonable public access, which could mean simply providing access permission to hunters from time to time, putting up ‘Ask Before You Enter’ signs around the area, or not posting the surrounding land.” Kading added that landowners participating in this promotion cannot charge a fee for hunting. The department will provide enough seed to cover up to a maximum 5-acre planting at no cost to the landowner. Landowners who are interested in receiving the food plot seed must sign up online by March 31. Seed will be available in April at Game and Fish offices in Bismarck, Jamestown, Dev-
ils Lake, Harvey, Dickinson, Williston and Riverdale. Game and Fish private land biologists can provide technical assistance on food plot location and site preparation. Landowners who are interested in additional financial incentives may be considered for the PLOTS program as well. 2019 Bighorn Sheep, Moose and Elk Harvests Harvest statistics released by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department show overall hunter success during the 2019 season for bighorn sheep was 100 percent, 87 percent for moose and 62 percent for elk. The department issued four bighorn sheep licenses and auctioned one. All five hunters harvested a bighorn ram. The department issued 475 moose licenses last year. Of that total, 449 hunters harvested 389 animals – 154 bulls and 235 cows/calves. Harvest for each unit follows:

North Dakota NRCS announces application deadline for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program Applications due by Friday, March 27, 2020 North Dakota State Conservationist, Mary Podoll, announced FY2020 Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) applications are due by Friday, March 27, 2020. All applications submitted by close of business will be considered for funding in fiscal year 2020. EQIP is a voluntary program that provides financial assistance to help plan and implement conservation practices based on identified natural resource concerns, such as soil quality, water quality, water quantity, air
quality, habitat quality, and energy. Landowners and operators who are engaged in livestock, agricultural, or forest production on eligible land and have natural resource concerns may be eligible to participate in EQIP. Through EQIP, NRCS works with producers to develop a conservation plan and a plan of operations that both identifies appropriate conservation practices needed to address natural resource concerns and implement those identified conservation
practices. Conservation plans must be developed for the entire land unit that will be included in the EQIP contract. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis; however, applications must be submitted by close of business on March 27, 2020, to be considered for fiscal year 2020 funding. When the celebration ended, Beach’s Sam Oech was selected as the Region 7 Player of the Year and the Beach coach, Mark Golberg, was the coach of the year. Andress led all scorers with 19 points for the Night Hawks, while Oase had 16, Mellmer 13 and Bailee Pierce 10. Schultz finished with five and Beth Lien had one free throw. Oase grabbed 13 rebounds in the game, while Bailee Pierce and Melmer each had two assists. The Bucs were led by Wilhelmi’s 15 points and Rising finished with 11. Oech had nine points, followed by Jenna Hildebrandt with eight points and Rachel Bosserman scored four points.

Hettinger-Scranton earned its second Region 7 tournament crown in a row when they pulled away in the fourth quarter for a decisive 64-51 victory. The co-op team from the southern border of the state earned its second straight trip to the Class B state tournament which starts Thursday in Grand Forks. “The game went very well,â€? coach Kelly Pierce said Friday after enjoying the victory. “The girls all executed really well. The gym (Knights of Columbus Activities Center) was rocking. It was a great atmosphere. It really was a lot of fun for the girls,â€? he said. He praised junior Samantha Oase for battling through the defense that the Beach players threw at her. “She had a lot of attention on her in the post. She played strong in there and did get fouled. She went to the free throw line and knocked those down. She is a good shooter and we kind of expected that.â€? “They (Beach) definitely concentrated on Sam and in doing that, with our team we have a lot of players who could step up and make shots. “We have the type of team that if you try to take one person away, we really have several other players who can step up and make some crucial shots. So it was a total team effort, that is for sure,â€?he said. The key to the win was sticking to the game plan, the coach said. “We trusted the process and we knew if we were in attack mode we could get to the basket and get fouled ‌ and get the type of shots we wanted. “It is a credit to the girls sticking to the process all season long and understanding the game is always four quarters long. We have been there before and trusted, focused on the process,â€? he explained. Back to state The Night Hawks made it to the state semifinals a year ago, Pierce said. “We know that there is eight teams left and all eight teams are really good teams. We just want to go up there and play the best brand of basketball we can possibly play. The results will take care of themselves. Many of the teams in the tournament Pierce has seen play before. “We’ll be familiar with some of those teams and there are some really good basketball teams in the state. “You have to play your best basketball at state when you are up there. Hopefully, it will be good enough to get some wins.� This year will be a little different for the Night Hawks. Last season, the Hettinger-Scranton squad was the top seed and swept through Region 7. “We just had a pretty dominant team last year,� he said. “This year, the region was a little bit better from top to bottom. We had a couple of losses during the year. We went in as the three seed. In our own mind, we knew the district tournament was open to pretty much any of the top five or six teams that could come out and win it. “Fortunately, we were able to play some of our best
basketball this season at tournament time. It is all about peaking at tournament time and I think we were one of the teams that did that,� he said. The coach also gave credit to the team merging athletes from two schools – Scranton and Hettinger – into one team. We are one team,� he said. Strong start Beach had trouble from the start, falling behind in the first quarter by a 16-12 margin and stayed behind through halftime (31-26). Beach started fast in the third quarter, with a pair of free throws by Madi Wilhelmi and a basket by Negan Rising cutting the Night Hawks’ lead to just one point (31-30).
