he Scranton Lions were hoping for a good turnout when they sponsored a blood drive Monday at the town’s community center. They ended up with more than two dozen people stopping by to donate blood when Vitalant brought a six-person staff PHOTO/Brad Mosher for the drive. For the people who donated blood, the Lions also offered some soup, snacks and sweets as a thank you for the participants. Mike and Jody Green coordinated the blood drive, checking people in as they stopped by to donate.

unior Samantha Oase left Grand Forks with a little souvenir of her trip to the state girls basketball tournament. “Sam Oase made the all-state all tournament team. She had another nice tournament for us,” Hettinger-Scranton coach Kelly Pierce said. “The sky is the limit for her,” the coach added. Oase will be a returning starter for Pierce next season.
In three games at the tournament, Oase scored 12 against the eventual state champions from Langdon/Erdmore/Munich, then followed with 20 points against LaMoure-Litchville/Marion and added another 20 points against Shiloh Christian. Oase also had two double-doubles, snagging 14 rebounds against LaMoure-Litchville/Marion and 12 against the Sky Hawks. 2020 ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

or Rick Stark, the balmy weather was just a distraction outside the 4 Seasons Pavilion when he held his latest gun show in Bowman. “It is going good,” he said Saturday. “Slow, but steady. We have vendors here from four states.” He admits that he has been coming to Bowman several times each year for about the last 20 years. “It has been steady,” he said, looking around at about 20 people checking out some of the vendors’ wares spread out on tables Saturday afternoon. “I’m really satisfied.” The event started Friday afternoon, Stark said. “It gives people a chance to see what we have and still be able to do other things over the weekend.

There were vendors from Bismarck and Mandan who brought a wide assortment of weapons and accessories, along with others who offered colored glass chopping boards. “We have got a little bit of everything,” Stark said. “When they come in, there is probably something of interest to them (customers). As to the vendors, Stark said he had vendors from Montana and Wyoming in addition to North Dakota. “There are some from Williston… some from Sheridan, Shade Hill, Spearfish,” he added. Stark said that his next show will be next winter in Bowman.

The 12-person committee comprised of employees of Southwest Healthcare Services began event planning in early January and worked tirelessly to gather donations, book the Mudd Butte band as entertainment, and hire Home Cooking by Lennie Kempenich to cater the event. The healthcare system was once again showered with generosity from donors from Bowman and the surrounding communities. This year donations came from 125 unique donors. Donations
included gift baskets, clothing apparel, sporting event tickets, gift certificates and monetary donations, among others. Nearly 240 tickets were sold and 16 uniquely themed tables decorated. Themes from the event this year were WWE/ Professional Wrestling, Gone Fishin’, Roaring 20s, Sleepover, Frogs for Leap Year, Remember When, Biker Gang, Margaretville, 101 Dalmatians, Despicable Me, Saturday Night Live, Visions of Rehab, We’re With The Band, Beverly Hillbillies, Big Bang Theory and The Benchwarmers. Funds raised through the live and silent auctions will
be used directly for patient care. The money raised from Celebrity Waiter allows Southwest Healthcare Services to replace outdated equipment, or purchase new equipment and supplies. “This event is a great opportunity for the community to have some fun and help the health care in our community,” said Cole Benz, marketing and public relations director of Southwest Healthcare Services. “This event wouldn’t have been the success it was without the community support we received.”

A handful of members of the Hettinger-Scranton girls basketball co-op got a big send-off from the students at the Scranton campus as they got into the white Scranton Miners bus and left the campus with a police and ambulance escort. As they rolled through town, people stopped and waved at the escorts with lights flashing and the girls waving back through the windows of the bus. Then the tour began. Building positive credit When you use a credit card responsibly (meaning paying off the balance each month), this will reflect on your credit score. Having good credit can benefit you later when purchasing a car or a house. Earning Rewards If you are going to spend the money anyway on groceries and your everyday purchases, you should take advantage of earning rewards back. Most credit cards will give you a cashback percentage on your purchases or points, which can be used for gift cards or travel miles. Protection If you were to lose your credit card, the thief would be spending the issuer’s money,
but if you lost your debit card, the thief would be spending YOUR money. The Fair Credit Billing ACT has capped the liability of credit card users to $50, and most companies won’t even charge you that. However, if it’s your debit card that is stolen, you could be responsible for the entire amount that the thief spent. Is it worth taking the risk of your debit card being stolen and having the financial burden placed entirely on you, or begin using your credit card for every purchase? I highly encourage you to make the switch to your credit card. Develop a system, checking your credit card statement regularly, or better yet enter each credit card purchase in your check register so that you can ensure you have the funds to pay your card in full each month. Department of Mineral Resources releases statement on weekend drop in oil prices BISMARCK, N.D. – BISMARCK, N.D. – Director of North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources, Lynn Helms, issued the below statements today following an oil price drop of more than 20% between Friday March 6th and Monday, March 9th. Caroline B. Woodley, 73, Bowman, ND died Wednesday night, February 26, 2020 at CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck Medical Center. A family and friends service will be held Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 7:00 pm at St. Charles Catholic Church, Bowman, ND. Funeral services are schedule for Monday, March 2, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Charles Catholic Church with burial to follow in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Father Paul Eberle will officiate. Caroline was born June 8, 1946 in Anaconda, MT, the daughter of Ralph and Alvina (Musil) Olson. She moved to the family farm near Bowman when she was 8 and later to Bowman where she attended and graduated from Bowman High School. After high school, Caroline moved to San
Francisco and lived with her sister for a short time. Caroline returned to Bowman where she worked various jobs including working in the advertising and printing businesses with her family. Caroline married Roger Woodley December 28,

Joan Beylund , 95 of Bowman, North Dakota died on Monday, March 2, 2020 at Long Term Care, Southwest Healthcare Services. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday March 7, 2020 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman. Father Paul Eberly and Deacon Ken Schmit will concelebrate the Mass. There will be a Rosary and Scripture Service on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church. Burial services will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND, on Monday March 9, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. CDT. Joan was born on October 27, 1924 in Marlow, Oklahoma to Harry and Bess Lee Rosenthal and died March 2, 2020 in Bowman, ND at age 95. Joan grew up in Bismarck, ND, along with her brother, Harry, and sister, Betty. Joan graduated from Bismarck High School in 1942. That fall she attended Bismarck Junior College seeking a degree in Office Administration. Joan worked at the North Dakota State Capital until her marriage. Joan and Leonard (Doc) Beylund met through mu-
tual friends and were married in Bismarck on December 27, 1946. After Doc’s graduation from Dickinson State College in 1947, they moved to Chicago, Illinois in order for Doc to pursue a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree. While in Chicago, their two sons were born, William (Bill) on April 9, 1948 and Steven (Steve) on April 7, 1949. After Doc received his DC degree in 1950, they moved to Dickinson, ND for a brief time, and then moved to Bowman where Doc set up his chiropractic office. Their daughter, Pamela (Pam) was born on January 11, 1955. Joan and Doc loved the small town of Bowman, where they were active in the community for nearly 70 years. Joan volunteered at the School of Promise and the Cedar Chest for several years and was

a member of the Sunset Home Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters. She loved card games, her favorite was bridge. Joan and Doc enjoyed Friday night dancing at the Flagstone, time at the Bowman Golf Course and at Haley Dam on their pontoon boat. Joan was a devoted wife for over 62 years. She loved her three children and grandchildren, and cherished the years she cared for Michael and David who lived in Bowman. She enjoyed watching her two granddaughters grow into beautiful women. Joan lived to meet all 15 great grandchildren. Although she often mixed up their names, they were her pride and joy when they visited her in the nursing home. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Bess Lee Rosenthal, one brother, Captain Harry Rosenthal, and the best person in her life, husband Leonard (Doc). She is survived by her children, Bill (Jeanie), Steve (Marsha) and Pam (Lars) Kangas; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Leon, Joshua (Kelly) Priddy, Justin (Nathanie) Priddy, Major David (Elise) Beylund, Michael (Breanne) Beylund, and Alexandra (Christopher) Trepanier; and her great grandchildren, David, Zachary, and Hannah Leon; Brennan and Lindsey Priddy; Kermit and Emma Priddy; Frank and Nora Beylund; Steven, Violet and Amelia Beylund; Xavier, Madelyn Rose, and Magnolia Trepanier. Pastors Corner: God at the Gym saw God in what they were doing. I do this, because I truly believe we all can see God at work anywhere. We just have to open our eyes and our hearts to the Holy Spirit working in us. As many of you know, I spend a great deal of time and devotion as a Pastor supporting my youth and their families at school sporting events. Not every Pastor makes this choice for a variety of reasons. But early on in my ministry, I made

the decision to do this. And my dedication to it is as just much a personal choice as it a pastoral one. And because of this, I have spotted God at the gym and experienced the Holy in the ordinary more than once. These sightings go beyond the obvious ones of crosses on walls, prayers in locker rooms, and the community bond our teams create for us. God is at work even when we do not see it.
This is one of the places, I spotted God at the 2020 Region 7 Girls Basketball Tournament in Dickinson. After the Nighthawks first game, many of us were gathered and waiting for the players to come out of the locker room. I was talking to a couple of parents, when one of the players approached the coach’s wife and “team Mom” in tears. She did not perform as well as she hoped that night. Soon another parent nearby joined in on the conversation.
I then witnessed two Christian women comforting the player. They consoled, encouraged, and then reminded her of the hope for a better game the next night. This seems like a normal interaction at the gym. Yet, I see it as a visual illustration of the verse, “How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.(Matthew 23:37).” I encourage you to reflect on some of your experiences this week. In any of those moments, did you receive

something that was life giving? Did you experience healing, wholeness, or comfort from another’s actions? Were you the recipient of mercy? It could be a coincidence, but I think God was at work in that moment for you. For the bible says, God is with us wherever we go (Genesis 28:15), God has a hand in our good works (Ephesians 2:10 and James 1:17) and God promises an advocate and comforter in the Holy Spirit (John 14:5). May God bless you in the Holy work of your everyday lives!

Farrell Lorge, Slope County Crop Improvement Board, and Shelby Hewson, Slope County Extension Agent, met with the board to discuss the $500 per year maintenance fee for the NDawn station at the fairgrounds and the possibility of the county paying it. This will be discussed further at budget time. Having no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12 P.M.

The carpet will be purchased from Cashway Building Center and BR Construction & Flooring LLC will complete the installation. The total cost of the project should not exceed $85,000, as budgeted. Bowman County Highway Superintendent Shane Biggs and Brosz Engineering representative Lucas Doerr provided updates to road projects. STAFF REPORT The Bulldogs moved into Tuesday’s semifinals against Dickinson Trinity by knocking off a stubborn New England team by a 71-49 margin. In a game of rallies, the Bulldogs were first, taking a 2611 advantage midway through the second quarter. But the Tigers came back with a rally of their own, outscoring Bowman County by a 17-6 margin in the final three minutes of the first half. The Bulldogs held a narrow 32-30 advantage at halftime. Bowman County started the second half fast, with Caleb Duffield igniting a 9-0 run that would give the Bulldogs a 41-30 lead in the first three minutes on the third quarter. Duffield hit a basket and sank a free throw to start the run, but then Matt Osendorf followed with a three-point basket, then another basket and free throw. Brady Senn added a tip-in on a second chance shot with 4:15 left in the quarter, keeping the lead at 11 points (43-32). The Tigers still tried to rally, but after New England tightened the lead to just seven points, Osendorf and Senn sank a basket and a three-pointer, respectively to give the Bulldogs a 12-point lead (48-36). BY BRAD MOSHER bmosher@countrymedia.net For Hettinger-Scranton girls basketball coach, it has been a season of tough challenges. The Night Hawks were just a third seed in their own regional tournament. But the defending Region 7 champions were able to repeat and earn a second straight trip to the state’s Class B basketball tournament. Unfortunately, their first tournament foe was trying for a perfect season. The Cardinals of Langdon-Erdmore-Munich would succeed two days later, beating Grafton for the coop’s first state title by a 52-41 margin Saturday. The Cardinals finished the season with a perfect 27-0 record. The Grafton Spoilers were seeded second in the tournament, opening with a 61-45 victory over Rugby and knocking off Trenton in the semifinals by a 59-46 margin. Trenton edged Shiloh Christian 56-50 in their opener. Fourth-seed Central Cass rolled over LaMoure-Litchfield/Marion by an 80-55 score in their opener before losing to the Cardinals (62-42) in the semifinals. Quarterfinal The Night Hawks opened the tournament Thursday against undefeated Langdon-Erdmore-Munich, the top-seed in the field of eight. The two teams battled to a 16-16 tie in the first quarter, before the top seed held the Night Hawks to just four points in the second quarter to take a 24-20 halftime lead. It was in the second half the game broke on the way to a 56-35 victory for Langdon-Erdmore-Munich. In the third quarter, the Night Hawks were held to six points as Langdon put in 17 to give the top seed a 41-26 lead. The pattern repeated in the final quarter, with the Night Hawks adding nine points while Langdon-Erdmore-Munich had 15. Both teams struggled in shooting with Hettinger-Scranton hitting just 13 of 33 field goal attempts (39 percent), while the winners were just slightly better percentage-wise, hitting on 23 of their 54 attempts. While Langdon-Erdmore-Munich hit 10 more field goals, they only finished with a 42 percent success rate. The Night Hawks hit 37 percent from long range (3 for 8) while Langdon-Erdmore-Munich fared far worse, hitting just 18 percent (2 of 11). Hettinger-Scranton hit 6 of 9 from the free throw line. The Night Hawks struggled with 22 turnovers, more than double their opponent’s total (10). The Hettinger-Scranton players were able to steal the ball six time, less than half the 15 times they were victimized. Langdon-Erdmore-Munich finished the game with 17 points off Night Hawk turnovers, while Hettinger-Scranton got just three points. Alyssa Andress led the Night Hawks with 14 points, while Samantha Oase followed with 12. Bailee Pierce, Carolyn Schultz and Quinn Melmer each added three points. Morgan Freije led the victors with 18 points, followed by Callie Ronningen with 17. Kaylee Lowery and Lexis Olson both scored six points, and Kaitlynn Scherr put in five points. Jaya Henderson and Cora Badding each scored two points in the contest. “Drawing the number one seed in the tournament, we knew we had a tough game ahead of us,� coach Kelly Pierce said. “We gave them a really good run in the first half. We were down just four points at halftime. “In the second half, we just had too many turnovers. We just got worn down. “They are a big physical team and as the game went on, we got wore out a little bit mentally and physically. They went on to do the same thing to pretty much everybody else the played up there (in the tourney). It was a tough draw. We thought that we could get some things taken care of

during the game, but eventually, we just got wore out,� the coach said. Consolation After the opening loss in the tournament, the Night Hawks met fifth-seed LaMoure-Litchfield/Marion in the consolation bracket Friday. The fifth seed won a 54-43 decision by dominating the first half. “LaMoure came out in the first half and shot the ball really well. We dug ourselves a hole,� the coach said. In the second half, the girls responded really well and played really hard to get back into the game. We just didn’t have enough time to make the full comeback. “LaMoure was a really good
team. They were quick and had really good guard play. They shot the ball extremely well in the first half. We didn’t play particularly well in the first half, but we came out in the second half with a lot of fire and grit and we fought our way back. “We just were not quite able to come away with the win,� the coach said. LaMoure was able to jump out to a 20-10 first quarter lead over the Night Hawks. Then, they went on a 17-2 run to take a 37-12 lead at halftime. Hettinger-Scranton came back in the second half, outscoring LaMoure by a 31-17 margin over the final two periods, but it wasn’t quite enough. The Night Hawks shot 36 percent from the field, hitting
17 of 47 shots, but even after LaMoure cooled down in the second half, they still finished with 21 of 53, for 39 percent. LaMoure got a big edge in three pointers, hitting 7 of 23 (30 percent), while the Night Hawks finished with 4 of 20 (20 percent) from outside the arc. Both teams picked up five points at the free throw line, while LaMoure had a seven to three edge in steals. The Night Hawks finished the game with 17 turnovers. LaMoure’s Ellie Holen led all scorers with 21 points, while Molly Musland followed with 19 and Kaylynn Siedschlag add 10. Molly Robbins and Allie Hebl each scored two points. Seventh place game The Night Hawks met Shiloh Christian with a chance to claim seventh place Saturday afternoon in the state tournament at Betty Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. It was the Sky Hawks edging Hettinger-Scranton squad by a very narrow 51-49 margin in the early game Saturday. “It was another one of those games where they came out shooting really well. They went on a 16-0 run in the first half. We fell behind, 24-8,� the coach said. “We came all the way back to take the lead in the second half. “They made a couple of big shots down the stretch and came away with the win. The girls really fought hard against a really good Shiloh team that has a lot of size and good guard play,� the coach said. The Sky Hawks opened with a 13-6 lead in the first quarter and expanded it to 29-21 by halftime. The Night Hawks came back in the third quarter, scoring 18 points, to take a 3938 lead going into the fourth quarter. But the Sky Hawks were able to rally late, have a 13-10 scoring edge to claim the twopoint win. Oase had her second double-double of the tournament, scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Bailee Pierce scored 15 while senior Andress had 12 points for the Night Hawks in her final game. Melmer added two. The Sky Hawks were led by Jaci Hall with 18 points, while Grace Kelly put in 12. Kennedy Walth scored nine points, while Kelsey Mische and Aliya Schock both finished with six
points each. The Night Hawks finished with 11 turnovers, while the Sky Hawks had eight. Coach proud “I am proud of the effort that the girls played with all weekend. It would have been nice to have come away with a win here and there, but the girls played really hard and that is all you can ever ask of them,� Pierce said. “It is all about making baskets when you get there. Every team is good (in the state tournament). You can’t expect to hold everybody down. We had some offensive droughts. I thought the tournament was a very physical tournament. We played a lot of teams with a lot of size. “Sometimes, the physicality of the game and how physical it can be can wear you out mentally and physically. When that happens, sometimes the shots don’t fall. “I thought our kids played very hard. We just came up a few baskets short in those games,� he added. Losing three The Night Hawks will be losing three players to graduation. Seniors Andress, Schultz and Melmer played their final prep basketball game in Grand Forks. “Those are three seniors who have been really important to our program,� the coach said. “They have done a lot of good things for our program over the years. They will definitely be missed. They will be hard to replace.� He will have four juniors returning for their final season in December, when Oase, Sidra Sadowski, Beth Lien and Casitee Miller come back. “Sam Oase made the allstate all tournament team. She had another nice tournament for us,� the coach said.
