or more than two decades, the Skull Creek Bison Ranch south of Rhame has specialized in raising buffalo. “We started in buffalo around 1996 or so,” Wayne Bucholz explained. “It was a decision that came about kind of off the cuff. We thought that if we
had buffalo it would probably be a little simpler. “Once you have an idea and think about it, sooner or later it snowballs into something you can’t stop,” he said with a chuckle. “That is how it happened.” Bucholz said he started first with few and ended up with quite a few. He said the bison are perfect for the area. “They are the perfect animal.
They may not be the perfect animal for every management situation, but when it comes to the environment we live in, they are the perfect animal. “They don’t need any man-made shelter. They don’t need a lot of interference or assistance from humans to live or survive. When we had cattle and we were calving in March and
recent fire on Fifth Avenue NW that destroyed a garage and damaged two vehicles did not damage any residential structures nearby, according the Bowman Fire Department. Chad Welch, the Bowman Fire Chief, said the fire department was able to wet the roofs of the nearby residential buildings to avoid additional fire damage on Feb. 16. “It was cold enough that it turned to ice so we had a nice ice protection on those roofs. The two vehicles that were parked in the driveway (next to the garage) were damaged. “There wasn’t enough of the garage remaining for us to do a very good investigation into the cause.

Bowman man still saving lives at 94 percent of our population that donates. “So he (Mason) is very special and he is very committed. We are very happy to be recognizing him for his efforts. There is this common misconception that there is an age limit as to when you can no longer donate. “He proves otherwise, with the fact that he still comes in at 94 years old, donating and giving the gift of life,” Jones said. There are guidelines limiting the number of times each year a person can give a double red blood cell or whole blood donation, she explained. Still, to Jones, it is amazing that he is still donating. “He is so kind and if there were more people that would emulate that kindness, I think we would see less shortages of blood overall. “I think it was time to recognize him,” she added. “As long as he is healthy and feeling good, he can come see us.”

t 94, William Mason Sr. is still saving lives. He has been doing that for almost 40 years. Mason has been donating blood since the 1980s. According to Camille Jones, the donor recruitment representative at Vitalant’s Bismarck office, Mason received a certificate of achievement Monday for donating 69 units of blood. Jones said those donations had the power to save 207 lives since he started in March 1984. “There are 55 times that he actually gave blood in the chair. Those resulted in 69 units of lifesaving blood. “What an incredible guy,” she said after she had a chance to talk to Mason. “I asked him why he started donating. He said he was able to and it was something he could do and he figured it would be nice to something to help somebody else. He donated Monday and received the certificate, but all he wanted was a new blood donor card, Jones said. “It is really cool. It is really something that he is looking to continue (donating),” she said. “There isn’t any stopping him. “He is very dedicated … a dedicated lifesaver, that is for sure,” Jones added.

In Bowman, Doris Bucholz is the coordinator and chairperson for the blood drives, according to Jones. “She does a few blood drives every year for us. She is part of the Rancherettes, a Homemakers Club who were the sponsors of Mon-
day’s blood drive,” she said. Mason may be back again in a few months to make another donation, she explained. “With whole blood donations, you can donate every 56 days. With a double red cell donation, there is a 112-day wait. He
(Mason) does both,” Jones said. Mason’s efforts have really been helpful, according to Jones. “We need about 250 donors a day to meet the needs of about 70 hospitals (in North Dakota) and we have about only 10

more than 15 years, he said. He permanently moved to Bowman in the 1960s, he said. Mason still gets around when he is not donating blood. “I like to gamble. We go over to Montana. The have these poker and Keno machines and we play them over there. We (Mason and his wife) go from Bowman to Baker every couple of weeks,� he added. Blood drive in April In April, there will be another blood drive. The Bowman County High School will host it at the school April 22 and will be co-sponsored by the school’s National Honor Society and the Bowman Lions Club. People can arrange for appointments to make a donation by contacting the school or the Lions Club.

I love to see the markets grow and see the industry grow. “We are seeing new rancher-producers getting started. It is all good. It is a good industry to be involved in,� he explained.

With buffalo, we don’t have to do any of that, Bucholz said. “They take care of themselves. “In 24 years, I have never seen a buffalo act cold – ever. Their fur is much, much thicker and they have an under layer of really dense hair that really shields them from the elements. They lose almost no energy to the outside. When it snows, the snow on them doesn’t melt. They shake and it all flies off. They really do well at conserving energy. “They evolved here. They are not an animal that’s manmade. There are no EPDs in the buffalo industry. There is no artificial insemination in the buffalo industry. These bison are what God created from the original animal. The animal raised today is no different than the animal in Yellowstone Park. It is the same animal. “All the bison you see in the privately-owned commercial herds are just as wild as any bison anywhere else in the world. They are habituated to the way we treat them, but they are not domesticated,â€? Bucholz explained. “They know if a pickup shows up, they may get a little hay or grain. They are habituated to what we do and how we handle them. “If civilization stopped, these buffalo would thrive just like they have their entire history,â€? he added. According to Bucholz, when the family first got into bison in the mid-90s, it was primarily a breeder’s market. “Then that market ran up and then crashed. But out of the ashes came the meat market. “Since about 2000 or so, the meat market has just been very steady. The prices are very good. There was a little bit of a price correction last fall, but it wasn’t extreme. Everything in this industry is priced off the meat market,â€? he explained. “The demand is always going up. Every year, demand gets stronger. The bison has that western allure to it that everybody seems to like. It is healthier. It is lower in fat, calories and cholesterol than skinless chicken is.â€? Bucholz said that he started his bison herd with cows from a ranch in Montana. “Our breed bulls came from various well-known producers from around the region in South Dakota, North Dakota primarily. The cows came from a ranch up by Fort Peck.â€? North Dakota’s health department sees bison as domestic livestock, not as wild game, he said. “Generally speaking, the bison are viewed the same as cattle.â€? When he started his herd, he admits the cows were nothing special. “They were just average cows and through the years and through a very strict culling program. And buying the very best bulls we could find, we turned a herd that was average at best into a pretty good herd,â€? he said. “Over the years, we have collected a few trophies, mostly from the Dakota Ter-
ritories Show and Sale. We were producer of the year two different years. We got a couple of trophies down there this year,� Bucholz said. “We have a pretty good herd and it has an improving reputation,� he added. “We sell a few bulls here and there. We are kind of known for having good stock.� The ranch has been in the family since 1939
in New Rockford (North Dakota). They process and do the marketing. The brand is ‘Tender Bison,’� he explained. North American Bison is the producer-owned processing facility for North Dakota. “We process animals from quite a few states (at New Rockford) and all of North America. We market all over the U.S., so you could find ‘Tender Bison’ almost anywhere.� Bucholz said his ranch runs around 400 cows. Recently, Bucholz said he had a yearling bull placed fourth and placed third overall in the producer of the year competition at the recent Black Hills Buffalo Classic held Feb. 8 in Rapid City (South Dakota). The ranch has made a strong showing in the past. “One year, I was rookie of the year and one year were producer of the year. There was a year that were producer of the year that we
had the Grand Champion male, Reserve Champion male and Grand Champion female and Reserve Champion female,� he said. The format of the show has changed since then, Bucholz said. “The competition gets better all the time,� the graduate of Rhame High School said. “The hardware gets harder and harder to get. That is a good thing, it means everybody is getting better.� The Black Hills Buffalo Classic also has two unusual competitions where some bison are testing at one location under similar conditions. One is the “Young Guns�, a yearling breeding bull challenge, while “Girlz Going Wild� is a yearling heifer challenge. Under the rules, the animals are scored on average daily gain on both grass and grain in order to get at the true production value of each animal.

Bowman, ND – Hundreds of enthusiastic young students & volunteers will attend the Bowman County School Wednesday, February 26, 2020 for their “1st ANNUAL” - Bowman Marketplace for Kids Education Day. Laura Weber - Business Growth Coordinator at the Bowman County Economic Development, said “Marketplace for Kids is an exponential learning experience, providing active learning and most importantly cultivating the entrepreneurial spirit and we feel that these are important opportunities to bring to the youth in our region.” The program targets grades three through eight but is open to all ages. Marketplace for Kids provides a variety of experiential learning classes and activities to help students develop innovation, enhance personal development, and explore career options.

BY IAN TOWE During a Rhame city meeting, the co-op was asked to add grocery items to their shelves. This inspired them to reorganize, paint, refinish the floors, and add more items to their shelves in order to benefit
beer and liquor. The hours of operation will remain 6am to 6pm during winter hours with Saturdays to be determined. During the summer, hours will increase to 6am to 8pm, and they will continue to be closed on Sundays. They do not foresee price increases as a result of the remodel.
Obituary Robert A. Smith Robert Allen Smith (Rob) went to be with his Lord February 13, 2020, after a valiant battle with cancer. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, February 24, at 11:00 am at the Bowman Luther Church. Pastor Charles Johnson will officiate with burial to follow at the Bowman Cemetery, Bowman, ND. Rob was born May 27, 1964, in Bowman, ND, the son of Duane and Ramona Greni Smith. He attended a one-room country school through the 5th grade and transferred to Bowman
Public School, where he graduated in 1982. He was active in 4-H and FFA. After graduating he worked various jobs, and for the last 25 years he’s been a truck driver. He was an excellent truck driver. On October 7, 1990, Rob married Pam Hoffman in Baker, MT. If Rob ever had any spare time, he spent it with family and friends, fishing or playing War Craft on his computer. He always had a smile and a kind word and he never was one to complain.
Rob is survived by his mom, Ramona, wife Pam, sons Damon and Keaton, daughters Amber, Rachel and Ginger and 5 grandchildren, sister Cindi (Arthur) Ridl, many Aunts, Uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and good friends, Tammy, Brandy and Darrien and all the people he touched along the way. Rob was preceded in death by his brothers Lenny and Scott, his dad Duane, his maternal and paternal grandparents.

SHEAR: Zoning Meeting: Shear called a zoning meeting to talk about zoning districts, marijuana dispensaries and the old hospital. The old hospital is zoned R-2. Marijuana – Zoning board says we should be covered with how the County is zoned. The board will wait until the vote is done and see if it is voted through. We are going to have monthly meetings from now on to stay on track. We need to start looking for a Zoning Director. Spring Turkey Drawing Held, Licenses Remain The 2020 spring wild turkey lottery has been held and individual results are available on the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website, gf.nd. gov. The Game and Fish Department will mail the spring turkey licenses to successful applicants after they purchase a valid 2020-21 hunting license. All spring turkey hunters regardless of age are
required to have a general game and habitat license in addition to their spring turkey license. Hunters age 16 and older must also have a small game license, or a combination license. The 2020-21 licenses are available for purchase beginning March 15. Spring turkey hunters are encouraged to purchase their other necessary licenses well in advance so their turkey tag arrives before the
season opener on April 11. A total of 433 spring turkey licenses remain in seven units. These remaining licenses are issued on a first-come, first-served basis beginning 8 a.m. Central Time on March 17. Hunters are allowed a maximum of two licenses for the spring season. Licenses remain in unit 06, Bowman County; unit 13, Dunn County; unit 19, Grant and Sioux counties
and portions of Morton County; unit 25, McHenry County and portions of Pierce and Ward Counties; unit 31, Mountrail County; unit 45, Stark County; and unit 51, Burke County and portions of Renville, Bottineau and Ward counties. Applications must be submitted online at the Game and Fish website. Only North Dakota residents are eligible to apply.

Sports Bowman County Beach Wrestlers Place Three at State Wrestling BY SARAH MARTIAN The Bowman County Beach Wrestlers traveled to Fargo this past week for the ND State Wrestling tournament. The team took 12 wrestlers who finished the tournament in 13th. Nate Boehm pinned his way into the championship match at 285# where he fell short and finished runner up. Mitch Stuber lost in the semi finals but wrestled back to place 4th. Tucker Strand lost his match in the quarter finals and wrestled back for a 6th place finish.
