he battle is far from over when it comes to influenza, according to the Southwest Health Clinic in Bowman. In fact, the community is only about halfway through the flu season and needs to make sure to take precautions to protect against contracting the virus. In order to avoid being overrun with cases and to help prevent people from contracting it, the clinic is still using a system to control the number of walk-in patients coming into the healthcare facility. According to Lisa Knopp, the clinic manager and a registered nurse, the visitor restriction plan the facility has been using will continue through the remainder of the active flu season in the region. “It will be for the duration of the flu

season. We are still seeing several cases a week,” she explained Monday. “We are still continuing to limit the visitors because … with the nursing home, we don’t want anyone bring it in. “So we will continue to limit the visitors,” she said. Last year, the control was continued into the end of the flu season in April. The restriction of visitors started around Christmastime, she explained. “When people come in with a cough and a fever, we recommend that they wear a mask. It is to protect them and to protect the rest of us too,” Knopp said. Although it seems that there may be slightly less of a problem in terms of numbers locally, Knopp said that it is still serious enough to keep the controls in effect. “We are seeing more of the ‘B’ strain as opposed to last year when we saw more of the ‘A’ strain. The ‘B’ tends to affect more

of the kids, not necessarily the young kids, but the school age kids. “We have had a lot more school age kids this year,” she said. “We gave out as may flu vaccines this year as we did last year. I still have them available. We are still recommending that people get vaccinated if they have not.” She said that the facility offered flu shots in the fall and a lot of people attended the events. “Now, if a person comes in asking for a flue vaccine we will handle it so they are in and out and not in the area where people with influenza are at – kind of a separate area of the clinic. They are usually in and out very fast and not mixing with people,” she said. “We have given over 500 vaccinations at the clinic this year.” That figure does not include the vaccinations given by the public

ore than 220 members of the FFA and 4-H Clubs from Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota converged on the Four Seasons Pavilion Saturday for the Badlands Judging event, with Adams County winning both the senior and junior 4-H Livestock competitions. In the senior 4-H competition, Adams County finished ahead of Golden Valley, Oliver Valley, Bowman County, Stark-Billings County, Morton County and McKenzie County. A second Oliver County 4-H team placed eighth. In the junior 4-H competition, Adams County also took the top spot in the junior 4-H Livestock competition, followed by Grant County, Stark-Billings County, McKenzie County and Morton County. A second team from Grant County placed ninth in the competition. According to the Slope County NDSU Extension agent, Shelby Hewson, Slope County competitors were part of the Adams County contingent which placed first in both categories. In the FFA team livestock judging, Dickinson had two teams place first and second, followed by Belfield, Watford City, Scranton, Grant County,

Mandan, Mott-Regent, New England and Flasher. A third team from Dickinson placed 11th in the team standings. In the FFA Agronomy competition, Grant County placed first, in front of New England, Belfield, Mandan, Mott-Regent, Hettinger, Watford City, Dickinson and Flasher. In the individual competition, while Laura Muggli of Grant County was first, Slope County’s Grace and Emily Dinius were second and fourth in the scoring. Competing for New

England FFA, Grace Dinius scored 826 points, just 10 behind the leader. Emily Dinius was fourth with 747 points. New England also had William Schmidt (13th), Emma Bock (15th), Katie Schmidt (16th) and Samantha Fitterer (30th). In the FFA Livestock category, Avery Roth of Grant County placed first, followed by Rylie Dohrmann, Isaac Binstock and Haeden Bullinger, all from Dickinson. Wyatt Dorner, competing for New England FFA, was eighth. Scranton’s top finisher

was Dani Maychrzak, who finished 17th, while Ella Anderson was 24th in the competition. The Scranton team placed fifth, while a pair of Dickinson teams placed first and second. According to Max Robison, the Bowman County NDSU Extension agent, the turnout was a big increase over previous years for the Bowman County-Scranton FFA who sponsored the event. “We had quite a few more in the FFA Agronomy/ Ag Sales side,” he said. “We also had quite a few more judges for FFA and 4-H. Last year, the weather had a lot to do with it and we had a storm. Things were kind of nasty and a lot of teams could not make it. “But, it is a really good turnout this year … and a little warmer,” he added. “There is a good number more FFA judges as well

as quite an increase in the junior 4-H.” He also said that the quality of the animals is also a key to the success of the Badlands competition. “One of the reasons that Bowman has a pretty successful contest is that we can get the quality of livestock from within Bowman County and Adams County as well. They were really helpful this year and able to find us the sheep from Dave Pearson at the Hettinger Research Center, the hogs from Larson’s over in Adams County and the cattle came from Murnak Herefords and Dry Creek Red Angus,” Robison said. The county extension agent said that the competitors are evaluated not only on their ability to numerically rate livestock but also on the ability to justify their ratings to judges in a verbal presentation.

World Encephalitis Day on February 22

BY JACKIE STEBBINS I laid awake in bed, hour after hour, night after night. I suffered from insomnia. My mind raced and I feared the worst. The worst was that if I didnâ€™t snap out of it, I was going to lose my job, my livelihood, my business and the life I was building. I was terrified. While I suffered from insomnia at night, I was a busy trial lawyer at my own law firm by day. Because of the stressful nature of our job, many lawyers become depressed. I believed that I too was suffering from depression. And then anxiety

set in, a clenched jaw and tremors. I decided to take a weekâ€™s break from work and believed that I would be good as new in no time. Unfortunately for me, I never returned to work as a lawyer or to my law firm. After I left work, confusion, paranoia, hallucinations, full body tremors, short term memory loss and cognitive failure developed. I did not speak, I stared. I didnâ€™t know the date or time. I checked myself into the psychiatric ward hoping to find relief from my complete dysfunction, but did not find that relief and was instead misdiagnosed with mental health conditions.

Upon my release from the ward, my health and behavior got remarkably worse. My husband of ten years and my young children watched me slowly slip away. I was only thirty-four years old. It was finally the wisdom of a local nurse practitioner at the behavioral clinic who believed I had a neurological condition and expedited my referral to a local neurologist. She saved my life. The quick thinking of my neurologist was also lifesaving, as he believed I had a serious and rare brain illness called â€œauto-immune encephalitis.â€? In the infancy of my diagnosis, I had a

grand mal seizure which was the grand finale of my diagnosis. My name is Jackie M. Stebbins and I am an auto-immune encephalitis survivor. I have lived a nightmare of such a grand scale, that Iâ€™m still in disbelief. I didnâ€™t think it could happen to anyone, much less me. I had never even heard of auto-immune encephalitis. My psychiatric issues, confusion, memory loss, physical debilitation and seizures were all symptoms of the disease. Auto-immune encephalitis is a significant brain illness related to malfunctions of the immune

system. According to the Encephalitis Society, encephalitis is inflammation of the brain. It is caused by an infection or through the immune system attacking the brain. Anyone can be affected by encephalitis, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. It affects 500,000 people across the world each year. Survivors can be left with an acquired brain injury which changes lives. 78% of people across the world do not know what encephalitis is. To commemorate World Encephalitis Day on February 22, I organized the inaugural BrainWalk in Bismarck at 9 a.m. at the YMCA track.

Through this walk, I wish to spread awareness about the rare and devastating brain illness that alters and take lives. Please join me in the BrainWalk on February 22! Jackie M. (Hebrews 9:27) The Bible tells us that we all will stand before the Lord (Revelation 20:1115) and be judged to our eternities according to our actions. Life is so short. So frail. So fleeting. It sounds like a very scary question, and if you begin to ponder it, it is quite sobering. Where will I spend my eternity? In a beautiful place called Heaven with the one who gave his life, and was resurrected, so that I might have eternal life? Or will I spend it in a place of suffering and separation from the presence of God called Hell? The good news is you do not have to wonder any more. Today you can get your life and eternity straightened out with God! Jesus said we can be born again, made a new creation, in John 3:3-5, and the Apostle Peter explained that on the day of

Badlands Judging Contest The Badlands Judging contest was a success this year, due mostly to the great teams that competed, the wonderful volunteers we had and the great quality livestock that producers graciously allowed us to use. A big thank you goes to Dave Pearson for bringing sheep, Larson Pigs of Hettinger for hogs, and Mrnak Herefords and Dry Creek Red Angus for the sets of heifers they brought. The Agronomy and Ag Sales were run by Misty Steeke of the Scranton FFA with help from Nevada Turbiville and Courtney Miller. The Bowman Jr. and Sr. Livestock judging teams placed fourth overall, with several standout individual performances from Dillon Bowman, TJ Andrews and Jett Ouradnik. Thank you to all the Judging parents that provided bars and helped make this contest run smoothly, and to the coach Beth Criswell, for preparing our 4-H youth to compete!

Bowman Community FFA Members Across the Country to Celebrate National FFA Week Chorus distributes funds

At a recent meeting of the Bowman Community Chorus Scholarship and Steering committee funds from the 2019 Christmas concert were distributed to local entities. Very generous free will offerings from the two concerts and generous donations from many area businesses and sales of DVDs of the concert makes this possible every year. During it’s 60 plus years of Christmas concerts and various other performances of the Chorus has always had great support and it is with so much gratitude that the chorus is able to fund musical activities in our area. The Chorus has always welcomed high school students from the three area schools and to support their music programs the chorus has given Bowman County High School, Scranton High School and Harding County High School music departments funding that they can use for music camp scholarships or whatever the needs hey have and to keep their departments going strong. The Chorus also gave to the Bow-

man Lutheran Church for allowing us perform there for so many years. The Bowman Area Dollars for Scholars also received funding for their great help with the lunches following each performance. Also a big thank you the Bowman County High School for allowing us to rehearse there every year. The Bowman Community Chorus has a music Scholarship available to graduates of Bowman County High School, Scranton High School and Harding County High School who are entering at least their sophomore year of college and enrolled in performing arts or music education programs. Applicants should have a history of musical performance and community volunteerism. This scholarship is offered annually and can be up to $500 if funding is available. It is a onetime award and the chorus has been proud to award to three area students in the past years. Guidance counselors in the three area schools have information and how to apply for it. Applications must be filled out and returned by April 1st of the current year.

Old West Auction highlights rare local treasures Another item he was proud of putting up for auction was an old buffalo hide scale. “It was for weighing buffalo when there were lots of buffalo around,” he said. “There are very few of those in circulation anymore.” Penfield, who grew up

They are local history writ in pounded metal signs on 10-gallon old cream cans, some with ties to families from Carlyle, Mont., Reeder, Scranton, Baker, Rhame and Marmarth, among others. Some of the communities have disappeared over the years, while others are spelled wrong. There are approximately two dozen of the large metal containers used decades ago which will be on the auction block Friday and Saturday in the Four Seasons Pavilion when Bob Penfield holds another Old West auction. The two-day event will start Friday at approximately 9 a.m. According to Penfield, the cream cans will just be one of the items up for auction. “There will be a lot of books and about 20 percent of the books will be those large coffee table-type books,” he said, adding that there will be a large assortment of antique items. “The cream cans will be primarily from the

AARP Invites Applications for 2020 Community Challenge Grant Program to Help Make Communities Better for All Ages AARP is accepting applications for the 2020 Community Challenge grant program to fund â€œquick-actionâ€? projects that spark change in local communities. Now in its fourth year, the grant program is part of AARPâ€™s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone. Last year in North Dakota, Forman, Jamestown and West Fargo were each recipients of Community Challenge grants. In previous years, Grand Forks, Buxton, Hettinger and Bismarck received grants. Knopp had suggestions for people who are feeling sick. â€œThe biggest thing is if

you have influenza, stay home. Donâ€™t be going to the basketball game or the grocery store,â€? she stressed. â€œYou need to take care of the fevers. But if it continues to progress and people can not keep fluids down, getting weaker or having difficulty breathing, they need to follow up whether they have insurance or not,â€? she said. For those people who think they have beaten influenza or the symptoms, they should not go out unless they have been fever-free for more than 24 hours at least, she stressed. â€œThat cuts down on the possibility of transmitting it. Providers are trying to encourage people to stay home for three to five days or more, depending on their symptoms,â€? she added. â€œBut the biggest thing is they should not go out unless they are at least 24 hours fever-free without any kind of medication. That goes for strep throat and other illnesses too.â€?

The pipeline route would enter North Dakota south of Highway 12 near Marmarth and then turn south. If approved by the commission, the company has announced that construction would start in the summer and be finished by November. Although the pipeline was supported by the audience, citing the opportunity for local jobs, one commissioner had some questions about leaks. PSC Commissioner Julie Fedorchak noted that 210 leaks were listed by an environmental impact statement. A company spokesman, said that there is a difference with the carbon dioxide being piped along the route. He told the commissioners that any leaks would immediately vaporize when it leaves the pipeline. According to Rusty Shaw, Denbury Resourceâ€™s Environmental Compliance manager, among the safety measures the company is taking will be making sure that local residents and of-

ficials have phone numbers to contact the company if they have any issues with the pipeline. The four-hour hearing drew a positive response, ranging from county commissioners, to local business and labor officials. One, Pamela Walker of the Laborerâ€™s International Union of North America, said that while there is a good local labor force, sometimes shoddy contractors have been brought in and just walked away from the local landowners. One of the Bowman County commissioners, Lynn Brackel, said that before the Bakken the area was the number one producer of oil in the state. The commission chair also said the project would allow the older well to become more productive again. The county commissioners had already approved the project, setting the stage for the PSC hearing in Bowman Lodge and Convention Center. The final decision by the PSC will not be for several weeks. The total pipeline would cover 17.77 miles from Fallon County in Montana to the company facilities south of Marmarth.

He had concerns on the gravel being used locally and maintaining the haul roads. Other road issues in the northeast portion of the county were also discussed. Nathan Miller, Slope County Road Foreman, presented a new equipment inventory. Discussion was held concerning potential gravel leasing with Dwight Briske and scoria in Unique Township on Forest Service Land. Also discussed was the remaining work on the water truck, acquiring a different pickup for Kyle Frank to drive, and selling the 2008 F250. Jacqueline Kathrein, Slope County Superintendent of Schools, met with the commissioners to give an update on the reorganization of Central Elementary School District and the plans to sell the school land and buildings in the spring.
