T
here are a lot of ducks flying in the Bowman County High School’s gymnasium. Hundreds of them. The small featherless yellow plastic birds are part of Dollars for Scholars fundraiser when people purchase them in the hallway outside the gym and then throw them at a small target during the halftime of a basketball game. The one yellow duck closest to the laminated copy of a bulldog paw placed in the center of the basketball court wins a ticket to the snack stand. According to Connie Gaebe, the ducks will be flying six times during the basketball season, three times for the boys games and three times for the girls games. West River Vet Clinic is just one example of a local business that refuses to go gently into that good night. As a way of competing with large, chain corporations and online shopping, the clinic created a new Pallet Program to keep dog food affordable. June 14 Vertical Pallet Garden Workshop - On May 28, the NDSU Extension, Bowman County, held a Vertical Pallet Garden Workshop at the courthouse. Some of the benefits to vertical pallet gardening are; a large area is not required to sustain a bountiful garden, in six square feet a gardener can plant a nice variety of veggies and still have room for pollinator-friendly flowers, the pallet garden is semi portable, allowing full use of sun during growing months, and even bringing the garden indoors for the winter for year round production. W
hen the North Dakota State University Bison won their eighth national football championship Saturday in Texas, Next Door Pizza in Bowman also picked up a big win. According to the owner T.J. Honeyman, a free breakfast promotion filled up the Next Door Pizza location in Bowman for the championship game helped bring in 75 people for the food and a chance to watch the game on multiple televisions in the restaurant. It was so successful, the owner said he would plan to repeat it again in 2021, if the Bison earn another berth in the championship game – with only one difference. He said he plans on being at that game. “I was in Frisco last year,” he said. On Saturday, the pizza restaurant opened early. “The (NDSU) game was at 11 in the morning and we don't open until 3:30 p.m. It was a whole production to put it on (open early), but it could be an annual thing,” he added. “I think there will be at least 12 out of 13 (Bison national titles). Their quarterback (redshirt freshman and game MVP Trey Lance) is that good.” Next Door Pizza also had the football frenzy continue Saturday with the breakfast followed by Chili and wings and the Bison followed by the Minnesota Vikings' playoff game. But the Bison and the breakfast was big, the owner added., noting that they also had a discount promotion for people who wore football-themed clothing like jerseys. “It was also a fundraiser for the “Giving Hearts Day,” he said. “I will donate all the money to that.” But the biggest response Saturday was for the Bison's game in Frisco. “Every seat was taken.”

The top four finishers qualified for the nationals. McGee finished behind Mariah Topp of Grace City. McGee also grabbed a second place in the Goat Tying, barely beating out Amidon’s Elli Rettinger, who placed third. Bowman’s Jayda Miller was sixth in the Barrel Racing and ninth in Pole Bending. Rettinger, who attends New England Public School, also was first in the second go of the Goat Tying event with a time of 7.960 seconds. McGee was fifth with a time of 8.710 seconds.
July 5 Community completes fundraising for new K-9 unit - After months of fundraising, the Bowman Sheriff’s Department is looking forward to a new K-9 member joining the team. Through the month of August, Sergeant Douglass Langhoff will travel to Iowa to train with Ruby, a two-year old chocolate lab. After training, the dog will be ready for duty in Bowman County. According to Sheriff Frank Eberle, Ruby will be the department’s first K-9 unit in a long time. Eberle said that the addition of a new K-9 unit

Betty J. Biel
Betty J. Biel, 86 of Scranton, ND passed away surrounded by her family at the West River Medical Center in Hettinger on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. Funeral Services for Betty will be on Monday, January 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Scranton. Pastor Mary Wiggins will officiate with burial to follow in the Scranton Cemetery. Visitation for Betty will be from 12:00-9 p.m. with the family being present from 4-6pm on Sunday at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Home Chapel. Betty J. Zeller was born on December 17, 1933 daughter of Gottlieb and Elizabeth (Bender) Zeller on the family farm near Java, SD. She attended country school through the 8th grade and then attended Java High School. Betty was united in marriage to LeRoy Biel on December 12, 1951 in Java. Their union blessed them with two sons: Michael and Bryan (Pat). They
lived in Bowman, Mobridge, Raleigh and Leith; before settling in Scranton. Betty held a few different jobs; such as bus driver and Avon Sales Associate. However, most of her jobs utilized her passion for cooking and baking. She cooked at the Leith School, leased the Lucky 4 Café, catered for various events; including the school and Pheasants Forever (with support from her friend, Phyllis); and partnered with LeRoy for the Golf Course suppers. Throughout the years, Betty

worked in various roles at the local café. She was a member of the Leith Homemakers Club, Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton Community Club, and the Golden Miners. She enjoyed camping trips in the “Biels on Wheels” RV. In addition, she had a love for bird watching, gardening, canning/pickling, and anything Christmas (music, lights, baking, etc.). She had fun playing Bingo with the girls, going on gambling excursions, coffee with friends, and also taking her daily drives in her little red pickup. She; along with her amazing cooking, will greatly be missed by family and friends. Betty is survived by her sons; Michael (Tami) and Pat; grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy Biel; parents Gottlieb and Elizabeth Zeller; 3 sisters Agnes Goehring, Lydia Zeller, and Lillian Pfitzer; and brother Erwin Zeller. Rod Lee Rod Lee, 59, of Linton, ND, passed away on January 2, 2020 at the Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck. Funeral Services for Rod will be on Friday, January 10, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastor Charles Johnson will officiate with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. There will be a Family and Friends Service on Thursday, January 9, 2020 beginning at 7:00 pm at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Home Chapel in Bowman. Rod Lee was born in Northwood, ND, on January 24, 1960, the son of Don Lee and Jean Morast. He attended school in Northwood, he attended High School in Grand Forks until returning and graduating from Northwood High School. After high school Rod began working for his dad picking potatoes at their family owned business. Rod then found himself working in the oil industry for 36 years. Rod had various jobs in the oil industry ending as a Senior O & M Technician in Linton. He had four children; Justin, Tasha,
Michael and Carsen. Rod enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, camping, fishing and time with his kids, grandchildren and his dog Bailey. Rod is survived by his 2 sons; Michael of Bismarck and Carsen of Jamestown, daughter; Tasha (Danny) Heinrich of Bowman, grandchildren; Sawyer and Zoey Heinrich, parents, Don and Jean, brothers; Tim (Teri), Marty (Kristi) and Barry (Penny), sisters; Diane and Laurie (Jim), several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Rod was preceded in death by his son Justin and brother Mike. Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Services of Bowman in charge of the arrangements.

Dakota West Credit Union offers Financial Literacy Education Grants to local schools WATFORD CITY, ND, 7 January 2020 –
Recognizing the importance of personal financial literacy in North Dakota youth, Dakota West Credit Union invites teachers from kindergarten through high school throughout the communities it serves to apply for Financial Literacy Education Grants. The goal of the grants is to award teachers $250 to bring financial education into their classrooms and educate their students on the importance of focusing on personal financial responsibility. “Helping young children understand that debit and credit cards are connected to money can be an idea that as adults, we should consider if children understand where that money goes� Juliet Jones, Marketing Coordinator for Dakota West Credit Union offered when asked about the purpose of the grants. “Helping them understand the concepts behind money movement is a good place to begin understanding personal financial responsibility.� “Financial responsibility only grows with our children. As juniors and seniors begin to consider life after high school, understanding the financial process behind applying for and receiving college financial aid, knowing how credit scores impact their futures, and considering the added expenses when buying a vehicle are important reasons to make financial education an ongoing process,� Jones added. Dakota West hopes teachers throughout western North Dakota embrace this opportunity to receive
funding to help students prepare for the financial choices they will face. Interested teachers can download the grant application at Dakota West Credit Union website by clicking on the Media link. While teachers do not need to be members of Dakota West Credit Union to apply or receive a grant, they do need to work at schools within the Dakota West branch region. The Financial Literacy Education Grants application period will continue through Monday, February 24 to allow teachers time to formulate ideas as to how these grants might be used in their classrooms to benefit their students. Dakota
West staff members will partner with the winning teachers to develop their programs, and the be on hand at the schools to help facilitate the topics later this spring. Winners will be announced on Thursday, March 12 on Dakota West Credit Union’s Facebook page . Dakota West also offers teachers links to existing resources and offers teachers ideas on how to engage their schools and communities in developing program ideas. Thursday January 9th was Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Some of the children from Here We Grow Again Daycare went and visited the Bowman Sherriff’s Department! They brought them some delicious cupcakes they made; they were topped with Cop cars that they made from candy. They also each made them a card and thanked them for keeping us safe. The Dollars for Scholars program raised about $15,000 last year, she said. “It was one of our highest (totals). We do fundraising
all year long.� When the girls’ basketball team hosts Hettinger-Scranton Jan. 27, the Bowman County Education Association will also be hosting a soup and pie event. “We’ll serve a variety of soups and a variety of pies and desserts. All that money that they will make will be given back to the Dollars for Scholars,� she added.

Rodeo and Fair. Early in the week, the fair started off strong with the 4-H Horse Show. Whether it was pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, horses or even rabbits, 4-H kids stayed busy this weekend by showing off almost every type of livestock imaginable for judges, trying to win first place with their homeraised animal.
July 12 Bulldogs coaches presented Coach of the Year awards - Earlier this month, Bowman Bulldogs head coach Jonathan Jahner and assistant coach Erick Egan were both recently recognized at the coaches convention and each presented a Coach of the Year award for their involvement in track and field. Specifically, both coaches were presented state level awards. Jonathan Jahner was presented the State Coach of the Year award for Class B Boys Track and Field and Egan was presented the Spring Sport Assistant Coach of the Year award. Principal and athletic director Tyler Senn said that both Jahner and Egan were well deserving of their awards.
July 26 Vision West visits Bowman - Chamber of commerce representatives from all over North Dakota’s southwest region gathered in Bowman this week for a Vision West conference. The conference provided a platform for regional community leaders to gather and discuss broad topics, which are affecting the whole region. One local attendee, NDSU Extension Program Coordinator Andrea Bowman, said that one major topic of discussion was focused on the upcoming U.S and ND Census. “In the morning we heard from Kevin Iverson, the manager of the North Dakota Census

year in North Dakota. Long summer days slowly turn dark and frigid, and impending winter halts most outdoor activities and sports. Luckily, golfers in Bowman looking to improve their golf swing throughout the season have a new option, simulated golf. In June, the Bowman Lodge installed a new, high-end PGA golf simulator to broaden their community involvement and reach. Bowman Lodge General Manager Gene Anne Kulseth said that she hopes the simulator will provide another reason for more people from the local community to step into the lodge. Along with the membership gym and indoor pool, Kulseth hopes the Bowman Lodge can provide more winter activities for the community when North Dakota freezes over. Aug. 23 Mural brightens up the Cedar Chest - Weeks ago, a group of artistic individuals called the Friends of the Library volunteered their time and livened up the walls of the Bowman Library with a bright, sunflower mural. Just last week the volunteer painting group struck again
with their painting prowess, this time at the Cedar Chest. The new mural on the back wall of the Cedar Chest depicts a clothesline full of miscellaneous clothes, including dresses, a hat, and even socks. Cedar Chest President Jerri Storer said that the painting is not only a great addition to the Cedar Chest, but also a great depiction of what people can find at the thrift store. Aug. 30 New staff joins the Bowman County School District - It wasn’t just the kids excited for their first day of school this week. A whole legion of new faculty is joining Bowman County School District’s ranks this year. Just this year the school has added eleven new faculty members. The high school, elementary, and support areas of the school are all benefitting from the new help. Many of the incoming staff are from all over the state with varying degrees of teaching experience. Elementary Principal Mitch Strand said that it’s always great when the school and community can attract new people: with new staff comes new energy.

Bowman BuccaDawgs helps wrestle up funds for local charities BY BRAD MOSHER Country Media For the Sunrise and the West River Health Services foundations, a night of youth and high school wrestling was a big success Tuesday (Jan. 7) in Hettinger. According to Ted Uecker, the director of the West River Foundation, the response to the charity event held at Hettinger High School was fantastic. “We raised nearly $6,000 on the night. “It was absolutely outstanding. We had a report from the Hettinger School that there were 270 adults and 90 children who came through the door. That’s 365, but I figure that there were 60 little kid wrestlers – 30 from Bowman and Beach, and 30 from Hettinger-Scranton. There were about 40
high school wrestlers along with the coaches and staffs that were not even figured into the total. “I am guessing that there was more than 450 people there,� he added. “We had a helluva packed house With the large turnout, making it annual event is something the charities are seriously looking at, Uecker said. “The Sunrise Foundation thought that the event was absolutely sensational. They are already talking about potentially hosting the event next year in Bowman when the Night Hawks come over to wrestle the BuccaDawgs in a dual format. “They (the teams) normally alternate every year – one year in Bowman and in Hettinger the next.� The wrestling battle featured

the Bowman-Beach youth wrestling BuccaDawgs against the Hettinger-Scranton Night Hawks, with the high school rivals battling on the mat afterwards. In addition the battles on the mat, the two charities also set up auctions for the people attending. One of the most popular items
that was up for bid was couch and sofa seating right on the edge of the mat, Uecker said. “Four BuccaDawg fans and four Night Hawk fans. We had two auctions for each. They could select two people with each winning bid to sit on the couches right next to the mat. We ended
up raising $1,675 from the live auction, which we’re splitting halfand-half with the Sunrise Foundation and the West River Health Service Foundation. Attendance was free at the event, which was underwritten by the two foundations.

The commission agreed to 3 days for this year with the daily amount to be decided at a later date. An extension of temporary easements was also discussed.
