Pasta, music gives crowd Local FSA helping of comedy workshops STAFF REPORT

usic may have been the message for the 2020 Pops and Pasta Concert held Sunday in the Solberg gymnasium on the Bowman High School campus. But the more than 50 students involved in performing the Bowman Rotary and Bowman County High School Music Department co-production made sure there was a healthy dash of comedy added to the 2020 recipe in front of approximately 300 people. For Charmaine Martian, the director of the music department, some of the show came as a surprise, but she said she knew it was going to be good. The performances involved the stage band and the full choir as well as small groups of students working on comedy skits, along with several solo performances. Some of the soloists, such as Ashlynn Dix, Alison Hoff, Alyssa Buckman, Brady Hendrickson, Katelyn Griggs and Mitch Stuber would make repeated visits to the stage as part of a larger group. For Dix and Stuber, their roles as the emcees for the evening virtually kept them on stage for most of the evening. The county executive of the Bowman/Slope office of the FSA (Farm Service Agency) decided to hold a series of eight meetings with small LaVonne Wegner groups in the Bowman office and two others in Amidon in the holiday-shortened week after Martin Luther King Day. According to Wegner, the decision to go small to get the word out of an upcoming March 15 deadline was the right one. “I feel the small group meetings were really good,” she explained after the final meeting of the week concluded. “I think the producers liked the small groups and were comfortable asking questions. “I felt there was a good exchange of information.

Grazers add new flavors to menu BY BRAD MOSHER bmosher@countrymedia.net Local Bison were put to a taste test at Grazers restaurant Jan. 23 as part of a menu tasting event. They passed the test and have become part of the new menu at the Bowman Lodge and Convention Center. The menu tasting was part of a new quarterly menu, according to Bowman Lodge manager Gene Anne Kulseth. “It will be quarterly or seasonal where we could add some special menu items. We want to change things up and give our guests a little more variety. This first one (new menu) we will have chicken wings with a variety of sauces. We have our Bison burger, steak tips, jalapeno poppers and our fried donuts,” she added. “As our menu items become popular like our Bison burger and steak tips, we’ll incorporate them into the future menus. “Otherwise, we will kind of rotate to introduce new items. With each menu, we will do a tasting so people can see what is coming. It is a fun event for people,” she added. The menu unveiled Jan. 23 included steak tips, the jalapeno peppers, the

She added that the Bison burger and the steak tips got the biggest response. “They are on the menu right now.” The bison used in the burger is locally produced, she said. “Our supplier is actually Salt Creek Bison Ranch, which owned by a local family. From what I understand, it is actually a co-op of bison producers and they make a special blend for us – an 80/20

blend – especially for our burgers. “It makes it a little extra special for us and is unique to us,” she said. Having a seasonal menu is something special often found in some of the big restaurants in the big cities, she explained. “It gives people a little bit of variety and we want to stay true to our concept … a fresh, never frozen, burger restaurant, where all of our fries are hand cut and freshly-made per order. We want to stay true to that as

well as offer a variety from what is on our everyday menu. “Everybody has their favorites on our menu and we want that to remain the same. But, it is always nice to go to your favorite restaurant and have something new to try. That is kind of the idea behind it.” The next menu change may be in early to mid-summer, she added, noting there has been a great response to the new menu items already. “Our concept is the

all-American burger restaurant,” she said. “It is nice to stay within that concept and still keep our old favorites and try something new from time to time. It is variety, change and something new.” The Bowman Lodge and Convention Center has Grazers as an attached restaurant. “We are owned by a co-op of investors. Doug Peterson is one of the owners of Grazers Burgers and Beers.”

Area Briefs Local game warden named Wildlife Officer of the Year The North Dakota Game and Fish Department district game warden Art Cox has been named the Wildlife Officer of the Year. Cox, who is stationed in Bowman, received the honor from a private conservation organization, Shikar-Safari, in December. Each year, the organization recognizes outstanding wildlife officers in each state. Coxâ€™s district includes all or parts of four counties and a variety of wildlife and recreational areas.

Among the information provided at the sessions was how the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 reauthorized the ARC and PLC programs with changes for the 2019 through 2023 crop years. There are certain commodity crops and eligibility requirements the operators need to know about and how the income support payments would be impacted as well as whether or not the land was idle. â€œI think the most important thing I got across

were the (2019) changes in the (2018) Farm Bill to the agricultural risk coverage programs and the price loss coverage. I hope I got the deadlines across â€Ś so they donâ€™t miss out on the opportunity for 2019,â€? she said. For Wegner, going small was a success in getting out the information. â€œIn my mind, it was a more comfortable way to present the information in an informal more than a formal meeting. I think there was more of a comfort level. We discussed a lot of variants to the program, but most of the questions were the same in all of the meetings. I think the attendees got (enough) information to make some decisions. There are resources available at NDSU to help them make

their decisions. â€œI think we got the information across that we were hoping to,â€? she added. The sessions were focusing on the need for owners covered by the farm bill to make sure they met the mid-March deadline, but also notify them of a second deadline coming up in June. The March deadline is for participating in the 2019 farm program, while the June deadline is for enrolling for the 2020 program, she explained. â€œThe deadline is June 30,â€? Wegner stressed when it comes to the 2020 farm program. She also explained that the FSA website has information about the programs as well. â€œNDSU has put together spreadsheets and information to help you make a program election,â€?

noting that people should contact the local extension agent if they have questions about the NDSU information. â€œThey (NDSU) have actually simplified those spreadsheets this year,â€? she added. â€œThis (the deadlines) is our big push right now.... our main focus this time of year. The March 15 deadline is what we are shooting for,â€? she said. In addition to focusing on the deadlines to Price Loss Coverage/Agricultural Risk Programs, she also was trying to tell local operators that most programs will not be changing, but some could impact the southwest region of North Dakota. Wegner also provided local operators with information about the WHIP+

Are Rural Places Dying?

BILL PATRIE There are many things we donâ€™t talk about. Some are too personal and would embarrass. Some are too painful to even think about and we fill our minds with thoughts that hurt less. The abandonment of a childhood home to the weather and eventual destruction is a painful thought. The place that was filled with laughter, music and warmth, now cold like a corpse. A school, once full of bubbly children laughing and learning now abandoned with books strewn on the floor and pigeons flying through broken windows. Trophy cases still filled with testaments to the heroic athletes that stirred the souls of community fans to ecstasy. Or the death of a county newspaper. Telling the story of the community for a hundred years, through the great depression, the dust bowl, the death of

Bill Patrie Presidents and the marriage and deaths of community members. The county paper celebrated the seasons with fall festivals, implement dealerâ€™s new tractors, and car dealerâ€™s new cars, still under cover, with a great revealing that fascinated teenage boys.

Or the death of the grocery store. The place where you knew everyone and wished them a Merry Christmas as you bought the holiday ham and the Christmas tree. The place where you knew where everything was and knew when the next order was coming in on the truck. The grocery store owner knew you and all of your kids by name. The loss of rural places isnâ€™t mourned by those who never knew they existed. It is questioned by those who honestly ask, â€œwhy would anyone want to live in that place?â€? Love for rural places is mocked by those who shroud themselves in the iron laws of economics and adopt a brutal cynicism that protects them from ever feeling hurt again. Burn the old buildings they say, it is the cheapest way to get rid of them. Shared vision is a powerful force whether it is positive or negative. What a rural community believes about its future really

matters. It affects the value of your home and if your grandkids will live near you. It affects what rural people think about, but not what they talk about. They do not talk about the kind of community they want. Instead they talk about who is to blame for the kind of community they have. The conversations often include the difference between boomers and millennials, what is wrong with the people who are not from here, the impacts of technology, the failings of government, and what strategies work best to survive commodity prices. Rural people often adopt the philosophy that they need a strong leader to save them and they cannot save themselves. A positive vision for the future of rural places is built on the foundation of what is valuable about rural places and worth saving. That discussion isnâ€™t taking place. It is silenced by leaders who donâ€™t want the conversation to occur

because they donâ€™t know how to save rural places. They donâ€™t want the blame for people moving away. They are probably planning on moving themselves. Rural communities will be saved by the people who want to live there. They were created by people who wanted to live there. Rural communities were created by people hoping to become business owners, land owners, or employees of a good company. There are more people in need of those same opportunities than at any time since World War II. If they are welcomed to rural places, they will fill the schools, run the grocery stores, and publish the county paper. Are they welcome? It is a way that God has ministered to me repeatedly over the years, but it is also something that has to be rooted in Scriptural truth. I cannot remember exactly the first time that I heard the song â€œAnother One in the Fireâ€?, but it brought to life vividly anew the story of the three Hebrew young men whose names we remember well if we grew up in Sunday School or VBS (story is found in Daniel chapter 3) and reminded me again Jesus never ever leaves us

alone, if we will stay with Him. Many of us get lonely easily or at least I do and yet we can be reminded that Jesus has come to save and transform us no matter what we are experiencing in life. The first chorus says â€œThere was another in the fire; Standing next to me; There was another in the waters holding back the seas; And should I ever need reminding of how Iâ€™ve been set free; There is a cross that bears the burden where another died for meâ€?. Jesus has done the work. Jesus abides with us Scripture says, if we will seek to abide with Him. Jesus will

never leave or forsake us, but we can leave him. The good news of the Gospel is that we can come back to Jesus and receive His mercy and grace at any moment. We can know today that we are never alone in our relationship with God if we will ask Jesus to forgive and restore us. If you do submit to follow Jesus then you can sing with all the saints the words of the second verse â€œAll my debt left for dead beneath the waters; Iâ€™m no longer a slave to my sin anymore; And should I fall in the space between What remains of me and this reckoning; Either way I wonâ€™t bow; To the things of this world; And I know I will

Way to kick off the indoor archery season, Slope County 4-H archers! This group of kids did great individually and placed 4th as a team in Junior Freestyle in the Badlands Competition last weekend.

One of those three – narcotics detection – paid off for the Sheriff K-9 Officer Shaine Towe when he made a stop near Gascoyne. Bowman Police Department Sgt. Ross Dannhoff took a theft report at a local

business Sunday and put out information about the suspects. Towe stopped a vehicle and requested assistance from Sergeant Ross Dannhoff During the stop, stolen items were recovered and the Sheriff K-9 Ruby also indicated the presence of narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia.

Bulldogs blow out Wildfire with hot start STAFF REPORT The Region 7 showdown with Mott-Regent Friday (Jan. 24) was over in just a few minutes. In the first minutes of the game, one team used turnovers and three-point baskets to quickly build a double-digit lead on the way to an easy 79-37 victory. It was Bowman Countyâ€™s Caleb Duffield, Jacob Svihovec and Matt Osendorf hitting a total of five three point baskets giving the Bulldogs a 15-point jump start in the teamâ€™s 29-point first quarter. The visiting Wildfire was stuck in single digits before finally finishing the quarter with 12 points. But that pattern continued with the Bulldogs outscoring the Wildfire by a

Lady Bulldogs douse Wildfire, 59-42 STAFF REPORT Bowman County jumped out to a lead and kept it to log an easy 59-42 win over Mott-Regent in the Mott Armory Thursday (Jan. 23). The victory improved the Lady Bulldogs to 4-1 in regional play and 7-5 overall. The Wildfire fell to 0-5 in Region 7 and 3-11 for the season.

After hosting Hettinger-Scranton on Jan. 27, the Bulldogs will go on the road Feb. 7 to battle Heart River. After the Jan. 23 contests, Beach was undefeated in Region 7 play with a 5-0 record (9-2 overall), while Heart River is second in the regional standings at 5-1 (9-4 for the season). Hettinger-Scranton was a half-game behind Bowman County in the standings with a 3-1 record after Thursdayâ€™s (Jan. 23) 48-36

win over Hazen at home. Fast start The fast 23-9 start in the first quarter by the Bulldogs was led by Jill Svihovec and Abby Smyle who combined for 12 points when they each hit a pair of three-pointers. But it was freshman Ellie Powell who controlled the game, getting 10 of her eventual 20 point to lead the visitors to a 37-13 halftime lead. The Bulldogs outscored the hosts 16-15 in the third quarter as the visitors started to use the bench, keeping a 53-28 lead going into the final quarter. With Smyle, Svihovec and Powell sitting out the final quarter, the Wildfire was able to rally 14-6 to close the scoring gap by the end of the game. Powell finished with 20 points to lead all scorers, while Svihovec added 11.

Andrea Rodakowski eight, while Smyle had a total of six points â€“ all in the first quarter on her two longrange shots. Baily Peterson also finished with six points. Alexius Miller had five points, while Jenna Bucholz and Amy Jeffers each finished with two points. Jenessa Zentner led the Wildfire scorers with 10 points, while Madison Rafferty added nine and Hailee Olson finished with eight points. Kiara Koeppelin got three of her five points in the final quarter. MaryJane Mayer and Samantha Greff each added four points. Karagan Friedt scored two on a pair of second quarter free throws. Bulldogs break losing streak The Bulldogs broke a two-game losing streak Jan. 21 with a 45-29-road victory over Killdeer.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs continued to dominate with the bench getting more playing time and the hosts getting a 29-11 scoring edge to build a 76-27 lead going into the final quarter. In the third quarter, Mott-Regentâ€™s Jayden Hauck scored all of the Wildfire points, getting 11 of his final 19 point total. In the final quarter, the Wildfire was able to close the lead by burning the Bulldog bench for a 10-3 margin. Svihovec led all scorers with 21 points, while Duffield added 20 â€“ both getting all of their scoring in the first three quarters. In addition, Brady Senn and Cam Wokal gave the Bulldogs

fourth double-figure scorers both with 10 points. Osendorf had nine points, five coming in the first quarter when the Bulldogs roared off to a quick lead. Gavin Scott added seven, all in the third quarter with a pair of threes and a free throw. Clay Heimer added a basket in the third quarter to close out the Bowman County scorers. For the visiting Wildfire, Hauck was the high scorer and only player to make it into double digits with a total of 19 points. Ryan Doe finished with eight points, while Sam Heuther added six. Two Tournament Champs and a Third Place Team finish at the Badlands Classic A busy weekend for the Bowman County Beach wrestlers as they wrestled Friday evening in two region duals then traveled to Killdeer on Saturday for the Badlands Classic Tournament. Friday evening Bowman County Beach met up with New Salem where they won a close dual 42-35. They also went on to win their second dual against Beulah 64-12. Hettinger/Scranton also rounded out the evening beating Beulah 59-12 and then coming up short to New Salem 27-33. Saturday morning the wrestlers were back on

the mat for a long day of wrestling. Varsity matches up in the main gym and Junior Varsity matches in the small gym kept the day rolling along. Depending on the number of wrestlers in each weight they were either put into brackets or ran as a round robin to get them the most matches. Tucker Strand and Nate Boehm battled it out to take first in their weight classes followed by Brody Headley, Navaare Head and Mitch Stuber who finished 2nd in the championship round. The team finished in a close third behind Killdeer and New Salem.
