Bowman Grain Inc. celebrates 50 years of business

or over half a decade, Bowman Grain Inc. has been serving the community, working with local producers to provide various agricultural services. On October 17, Bowman Grain Inc. hosted an appreciation supper to celebrate 50 years of business. According to Bowman Grain General Manager Robert White, Bowman Grain originally started when a group of seven farming families got together in the late 60’s and purchased a grain elevator on Jan. 1, 1969 from the Osborn-McMillan Elevator Company. Although Bowman Grain is 50 years old, the grain elevator itself is much older. White estimated that the original grain elevator was built during Bowman’s original settlement in 1907. “The elevator has gone through many renovations, but the main structure is still being used today as our storage for durum wheat,” said White. Bowman gets crafty at 48th Annual Fling Thing

ave you ever wondered how people passed the time before the age of computers and cell phones? Believe it or not, people did something called “crafting” to pass the time. Although some may consider it an archaic remnant of previous generations, artisans and craftsmen from around the region gathered in Bowman on Nov. 3, at the 4 Season Pavilion for the 48th Annual Fling Thing to show the tradition of crafting is still alive and thriving. The Fling Thing is a craft and vendor show that benefits the local 4-H organization. There, vendors can show off and sell their homemade goods to the public. 4-H also serves a meal to raise funds for the local program. According NDSU Bowman County Extension Administrative Assistant Leah King, the Bowman Homemakers Club, a former crafting club, started the original Fling Thing 1971. “The club would meet regularly and share different cooking and crafting techniques,” said King. “The older generation would teach the younger generation how to do reg-

ular household things like canning and sewing.” The club created the Fling Thing event with the original intention to teach and demonstrate new crafts and techniques to the public. Eventually the event turned into a crafts

and vendor show and was turned into a fundraiser for the local 4-H organization. This year, over 45 vendors registered for the event. At the event people sold hand-woven apparel items, seasonal

crafts, homemade aromatic candles, woodcrafts and much more. King said that due to high interest and limited space, some vendors even had to be turned away. “Next year we are hoping to rearrange the event

so that we can accommodate a good ten more vendors,” she said. According to King, vendors came from all over the region to set up a booth at the event.

fter months of practice, choirs from Scranton, Belfield, South Heart, Hettinger, and Bowman gathered at Bowman County School last week to sing together in the 16th Annual Choirfest music festival. The music festival, according to Band and Choir Director Charmaine Martian, gives students a chance to travel around the region and perform in new areas with new people. “The choir fest allows students in small schools to participate in a larger choir with a guest conductor,” said Martian. Every year, a different area school hosts the music festival. This year, Bowman hosted the event, however South Heart will host the festival next year. In total, over 125 choir students sang in the festival. Martain said that every student in each respective town’s choir gets to participate and there are no auditions for the event. everything together the night of the performance. “In one afternoon, over four hours, the kids work on blending as a group with the guest conductor,” said Martian. For the 16th Annual Choirfest, Guest Conductor Larry Swingen, a retired vocal and general music teacher, traveled from Fargo to direct the festival and work with the choir students.

After a long practice session, the group performed in the Bowman Public School gym for a free-admission audience. “In the past, local directors used to conduct, but more recently we found it more beneficial to bring in a guest conductor so the kids get a chance to work with somebody new,” said Martain. This year, the choir students performed

a multitude of varying upbeat songs. In total the choirs sang five pieces together for an audience of over 200 people. Overall, Martain said she was very impressed with the performance. “The kids were focused and engaged, and they responded very well to the guest conductors needs and what he wanted to hear,” said Martain. “It was a very well put together con-

cert.” Martain continued, “I’m glad we get a chance to do the Choirfest. It gives the kids in our smaller schools an opportunity to sing with larger choirs. It really boosts their confidence levels so they can bring that energy back to our smaller choirs and produce bigger sound as well.”

Child Find Program Needs Your Help!

very North Dakota child is like a snowflake, unique in his or her abilities, family heritage and potential to grow. But some infants and children face special challenges in getting a good start in life. The West River Stu-

dent Services Unit and regional School districts have designated the week of November 10-16, 2019 as Child Find Week in their communities. Child Find was established through the individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to help identify infants and children with delays in

growth and development who may need supports and/or services. It’s important that all parents keep track of their children’s growth and development. Not all children do the same things at the same ages, but there are some general guidelines. Does the child’s progress seem typical? Are there signs for concern?

Sometimes parents are too close to their own children to notice delays. A friendly comment from a neighbor or relative may help them take the first steps toward getting help. If you are concerned that your child isn’t developing as quickly or doing the same things

as others of his or her age, contact your local school principal or West River Student Services at (701) 483-1257. A selective screening may be scheduled to help determine whether a delay is present. If so, special activities or services may be offered to help your child grow, develop,

Today is the anniversary of the death of Dr. Paul H. Burton. He came of age during the days of making house calls on horseback. Burton was born at Boscobel, WI, on July 16, 1876, and studied medicine at the University of Minnesota. During those years, he also practiced at Kenmare for several months. He graduated about 1901, practiced for a time in northern Minnesota, and then moved to Fargo, where he went into private practice. Dr. Burton’s medical internship was relatively unusual. He was appointed to the Stillwater Prison. Among the many patients he saw were Jessie James’ brother, Frank, and Cole Younger, following their infamous Northfield Bank robbery. Burton’s friends said he didn’t like to talk about himself, but they knew that if properly persuaded, he would tell the story about the day somebody tried to rob him. He was in his office above the Fout and Porterfield Drug Store on Broadway at the time. “A fellow came in demanding narcotics,” a friend later said. “The man carried a good-sized gun which he trained on Dr. Burton, but Burton with his experience in the Minnesota penitentiary simply got out of his chair, knocked the gun from the fellow’s hands, and gave him a sound beating.

Other members of the founding group included Kent Darrow, Frank Darrow and R.E. Weible; all four men were part of a complicated partnership of brothers, sisters, and brothers-in-law. The fifth member was unrelated – Doctor William H. Long from Dickinson.

They began their clinic with offices on the fourth floor of deLendrecies Department Store and then moved into a building a few blocks away. Dr. Burton was no longer alive when the new clinic in south Fargo opened in 1957. 1932 was given the highest honor that physicians can give to on of their contemporaries; he was elected president of the North Dakota Medical Society. The doctor also served on the Fargo Board of Education and was instrumental in bringing to Fargo a child welfare program financed by the Commonwealth Foundation. Dr. Burton went out to vote on the morning of November 4, 1952. Afterwards, he spent a few hours at the Shrine Club and then went home to take a nap. Despite the set back, Bowman Grain bought a second elevator in 91’ and more recently the Bowman Wool Company for more office space. “We have always offered good services and good business to customers and that’s what’s kept us going,” he said. In addition to expanding its base of operations, Bowman Grain also invested into offering customers new services. According to White, the initial purpose of Bowman Grain was to buy and store crops. However, over the years, the business has evolved to offer a wide variety of services, including chemical sales and agronomy. Moving forward, White said that the business plans to continue expanding its range of services into new ranching services and products. “We are still working on it yet, but we will start supplying more ranch products like grain hopper bins,” he said. Even the number of employees has expanded through the years. What started as three employees running the elevator quickly grew. Today, the business employs five full-time employees: a manager, a secretary, an agronomist, and two driveway employees. Overall, White said that business at Bowman Grain has been good and that he expects the next 50 years of business to be as successful as the last. “I think we will still be around fifty years from now,” he said. “We have a lot of loyal customers who like to do business with us.”

She estimated that well over 500 people attended the event. “Last year we only had 420 people attend the event, so we were really happy with how this year

went,” said King. King said the proceeds from the booth fees and the 4-H meal go to benefit the local 4-H organization. Although the total amount raised for 4-H has yet to be totaled, King said that last year the event raised over $3,200. “It all goes to the 4-H, which they use for different programs and events,” said King. She continued, “We are very pleased and happy how things turned out this year. We had a wonderful day, and we were thankful for all the vendors and people that made it to the Fling Thing this year.”

Turnovers doom Bulldogs as they fall to Bishop Ryan BY COLE BENZ For The Pioneer

he Bulldogs looked poised to make another appearance in the semifinals after getting out to a 14-0 lead early against the Bishop Ryan Lions. But turnovers and a porous defensive line let the Lions take over and captured the 52-21 victory. The game started to turn late in the first quarter, when just one play after senior Jacob Svihovec picked off their quarterback, he threw an interception himself. Bishop Ryan took advantage of the turnover and scored their first touchdown. They forced a Bulldog fumble and scored again to cut the lead to 14-13. The Lions took their first lead of the game

gained the lead midway through the third quarter when Svihovec kept it for a 1-yard run, reaching over the line

as he was tackled by a host of Bishop Ryan defenders. Senior Jaxson Fischer kicked the extra point to give Bowman

County a 1-point lead. The Lions would convert on a fourthand-goal from the 13 yard line on a pass to junior Bryson Elm for another six points to grab the lead. They never trailed the rest of the game. Bishop Ryan scored 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, which included a 38yard field goal that just hit the crossbar as it passed the uprights of the goal post. Svihovec has been the focal point of the Dawg offense all year, and Bishop Ryan’s defense went after him hard. Although he accounted for all of Bowman County’s three touchdowns, the Lions intercepted him once and forced three fumbles from the senior. Bowman County’s defense played a big role in their success

this year and they two were exposed. Normally a staunch defender of the run, Bishop Ryan ran for more than 211 yards. With the loss, Bowman County’s season came to an end. They finished with an overall record of 7-1 and went undefeated in region play this regular season. They entered the postseason as the No. 4 overall seed and won their first game 52-0 against Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central. Bishop Ryan will face Velva, who beat Shiloh Christian 14-6. to build a quarter mile of four barbed-wire fence. It happened because on Saturday evening, I was rudely taken from a pinochle game to get cattle off the road. And Shirley wasn’t home to get them in. So yesterday morning, we went to fencing.We being Shirley and I. There is nothing more attractive to me than a woman wearing Carhart coveralls, a Scotch cap, and leather gloves, with a fencing pliar in her hand. Gorgeous. I mean it’s not Victoria’s Secret, but dang, she can put those clips on those steel posts! And fencing gives you a lot of time to think. I don’t care if it is new fence, or repairing old fence. You can really contemplate the decisions you have made in your life, that give you

the opportunity to still be fencing when your friends are retired and have gone south for the winter. But yesterday my thoughts drifted to Ben. Ben Franklin. One of our Founding Fathers who was a genius. He discovered electricity. He invented hundreds of wonderful things. He started the first fire department. The first public library. He was ambassador to different countries in Europe. And then, as if to make up for all the good he had done in his life, he came up with the idea of daylight savings time. To me, that is a dark blemish on a stellar life. I will guarantee you one thing. If I am ever elected governor, or president, I will do away with the switching of time. I don’t care if we are on standard

time, or daylight time. But we will stay on one time. Uncle Hugh was that way. When riding roundups, we had fast time, slow time, and Uncle Hugh time. He never changed his time. He didn’t care if you set your clock ahead or back. His stayed on course. The cows didn’t change theirs, so he didn’t change his. Shirley hates the change to. Because I just can’t let it go. You see, I am pretty much an early morning guy. I don’t mind getting up at four or five in the morning. But, unless the cards are really running good, I am early to bed. Really early. I can honestly say that I haven’t watched the nine o’clock news more than a handful of times in my life. So now, when Shirley says, “You can’t go to bed yet! It’s only ten to seven.” I will reply

Local Scams Target U.S. Military Veterans STAFF REPORT

ven though veterans have protected our country with their service, scammers have them in their sights. Veterans are twice as likely as nonveterans to lose money to fraud. Nearly 80 percent of veterans surveyed reported being targeted by scams related to their service. Here are 10 scams targeting veterans: 1. Charging for Records - Scammers attempt to charge for access to a veteran’s military records. Never pay for your records; all information is free through the Veterans Administration ( VA). 2. Veterans Administration Phishing - Scammers call veterans claiming they work for the VA and ask for personal information to update their records. If you get an unsolicited call from the VA, hang up. 3. Employment

Scams - Scammers post bogus job offers online to recruit veterans. The scammer may use or sell your personal information provided in the job application. It’s likely a scam if you have to pay to get the job, you need to supply credit card or banking information, or the ad is for “previously undisclosed” federal government jobs. 4. Special Deals Scammers offer special discounts for veterans on a range of products. Often, the products aren’t discounted at all, or they don’t actually exist. Check out offers carefully. Never wire money to someone you don’t know. 5. Rental Scam - A scammer posts a rental property on a classified ad website offering discounts for active duty military and veterans. You just need to wire transfer a security deposit to the landlord. Only there is no rental property, and you just lost your security

deposit. 6. Benefits Buyout Scam - Scammers offer an upfront payment of cash in exchange for a veteran’s future disability or pension payments. These buyouts are typically a fraction of the value of the benefit. 7. Investment/Pension Scam - Unscrupulous investment advisers claim the veteran may be able to claim additional government benefits by overhauling their investment holdings. Get credible information on benefits by contacting your state veterans’ affairs agency. 8. Veterans Choice Program - Scammers have set up a phone number nearly identical to the number veterans dial to find out if they are eligible to use approved health care providers outside of the VA system. Vets call the fake number, and a message prompts them to leave their credit card information in return for a rebate. They

debit your account, and the vet gets nothing in return. Make sure to dial the correct number for the VCP: 1-866-6068198. 9. GI Bill Marketing Scam - Veterans may be targets of deceptive marketing tactics that provide false information and encourage them to attend expensive for-profit schools. The VA offers a comparison tool to help you locate a school and determine your benefits. Visit www.vets.gov/ education/gi-bill. 10. Fake Charity Scam - A scammer claims to represent a charity helping veterans and their families. Only the scammers pocket the money and divert donations away from legitimate charities that serve veterans. Check out a charity at www. charitynavigator.org or www.give.org before supporting one.
