As they settled the area, built new farms, and established ranches, they soon recognized the importance of agricultural research, innovation, and discover y. As the first property lines were being drawn in Hettinger, pioneering farmers and ranchers made the foundational decision to donate 160 acres of land for the specific purpose of agricultural research in conjunction with the North Dakota State University and funding from the North Dakota State Legislature. Today, 110 years later, that research land is formally known as the Hettinger Research Extension Center. Back then, however, it was known as the Hettinger Sub-Station. According to Hettinger Research Extension Center Director and Ph.D. Animal Scientist Christopher Schauer, the station provided key insights into what new farmers and ranchers could actually grow in the region. Many of the pioneers, he explained, were immigrants from different countries, and those immigrants had no way of understanding what crops and animals would work in this area of the world. “It was that type of research that started the foundation of, EXTENSION » PAGE 6

reast cancer is the most common cancer in America for women. The American Cancer Society estimates that 268,6000 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed by the end of 2019. The statistics are staggering, and Adams County isn’t immune. Although breast cancer is pervasive, the technologies to catch the cancer in its early stages are improving. West River Health Services just invested into one of these new technologies by upgrading their mammography system. Even though it’s the same mammography machine, the new upgrade gives physicians the ability to see the body in three dimensions rather than just two. According to Fosheim, the Chamber had been looking into a mural project for quite a while. Only recently, were they able to find the funding. “We’ve been looking for funding to start a mural for over a year,” said Fosheim. “We finally received a grant through the Dickinson Sales Tax Grant for updates to Centennial Square, including the addition of a mural.” The Dickinson Sales Tax Grant specifically benefits satellite communities within

Fosheim said that the new mural is a part of the larger effort on behalf of the Chamber to make Centennial Square a more aesthetic and accessible space, and additional updates will come with this Dickinson Sales Tax Grant. “There are exciting things going on in Centennial Square,” said Fosheim. “A group of volunteers took out the railroad ties and installed a new retaining wall. These exciting changes help the functionality of the square.” In addition to a more pleasing appearance, Fosheim hopes the mural will attract new people to visit and see Hettinger. “When people talk about attracting tourism, there has to be a

quirk in the community that draws people into town,” she said. “Especially because Hettinger is a highway community right along Highway 12, we need something that will compel people to pull over and visit small businesses.” Once finished, the mural will feature rolling North Dakota plains, a bright sunset, and most importantly, a wild buffalo. Both in history and present-day, the buffalo has been a proud symbol of the southwest region of North Dakota. “We are excited to celebrate our buffalo heritage,” said Fosheim. “The mural will tie into the Dakota Buttes Visitor Council’s buffalo theme.” The artist currently working on the Chamber mural, Martin Kloster, is the same local artist who painted the Peacock Mercantile’s mural. All the paint used for both murals was donated through a local paint drive. This allowed the artist to keep costs affordable and still accomplish a great painting.

Dear Community Members: Asbestos is an issue we have to deal with. In years past the schools were required to use fire retardant materials in schools. In 1986 the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act was enacted by congress to determine the extent of and develop solutions for any problem schools may have with asbestos. To give you some background asbestos has been used as a building material for many years. It is a mineral that is mined primarily in Canada, South Africa and USSR. It is used as insulation, sound absorption, decorative plaster fireproofing and in over 3000 different products. E.P.A. began action to limit uses of asbestos products in 1973 and most asbestos products as building materials were barred in 1978. A certified asbestos inspector, as required by AHERA, has inspected Hettinger Public School. The inspector located, sampled and rated the condition and hazard potential of all material in our facilities suspected of containing asbestos. TAC Environmental, Inc. a professional firm certified to develop asbestos management plans, analyzed the samples and inspection records. Total Control Inc. from Dickinson has developed an Asbestos Management plan for our facilities which include: this notification letter, education and training of our employees and a set of plans and procedures designed to minimize the disturbance of the asbestos containing material and plans for regular surveillance of the asbestos-containing material. A copy of the asbestos management plan is available for your inspection in the main office during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. contact the Superintendent of Schools regarding inquiries of the plan. TheJuly 2019 financial statement was reviewed by the Board. August8th, 2019 at 8:00 am was set as the next regular meeting date. MICHELE GAYLORD: Emergency Manager, updated the Commissioners on her department. She voiced her concerns on the increasing amount of paperwork required by the State and the amount of hours her position has set. She has a Quad State Meeting coming up in Ekalaka to get approved for the out-of-state travel. Commissioner Pagel moved to approve the out-ofstate travel for Michele. Second by Commissioner Vliem; and by vote; Laufer voted aye, Vliem voted aye, and Pagel voted aye. Motion carried. ACDC – JASMIN TURNER:Jasmin update the Commission on the happenings with ACDC. Her office has been very busy as in the last month they had the Helping Hettinger Days as well as the 4th of July Celebration. Jasmin was planning to attend a “Go Local” event supported by Vision West. The meeting will provide feedback and discussion on improvements in the Community. She continues to wait on the USDA grant funds, she is hopeful to receive some funds. Discussion on possible grant funds to help defray costs of a County website was discussed, there is a possibility of a grant coming available in August, “Partners in Marketing” offered through ND Department of Commerce. BUTLER MACHINERY/DEREK NORTHRUP: Derek Northrup met with Commission to discuss and go over lease options and details for a new motor grader. After discussion on different options, Derek will come up with some quotes and terms and bring back to another meeting. He is hoping to be able to bring a new piece of equipment to town for the County to “test drive” ADAMS COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY: JB Lindquist, Charles Lindquist, Bruce Hagen, and Wes Edwards updated the Commission on the airport, and where the Airport Authority spends their 4 mills they request from Adams County taxes. The plan is to update the taxi-way soon. History of the airport was presented and all the updates that have occurred. The Commission was invited to call for a tour of the Airport, as they are very proud of their facility and the updates they continue to provide. HETTINGER TOWNSHIP REQUEST: Chuck Lindquist, owning land in Hettinger Township, put in a request to graze sheep in a pasture which is located North of Hettinger. Mr. Lindquist will have to be in contact with both the City and the County zoning boards for this particular request. Commissioner Laufer will contact Mr. Lindquist on this. SOCIAL SERVICES UPDATE:Cheryl Dix met with Commission on updates in her department. She requested a letter of intent needs to be sent from the Commissioners on the Social Service Redesign. The department is looking into the future at the different needs that they could provide and have expertise in. SUNRISE YOUTH BUREAU: Holly Praus and Amber Hokstad visited with the Commission on the hopes to continue getting funding from the County this year. They Sunrise Youth Bureau has a location in Dickinson and can be used for youth placement and provides educational services. They also have a diversion program they work with the juvenile court system on this. Commissioner Laufer informed them they would be working on budgets later in the day, and that the Commissioners planned to continue providing them with $1500.00. ADAMS COUNTY SHERIFF REPORT: The June law enforcement service report was reviewed by the Commission. Sheriff Collins reported that he had a resignation in his department and may have one other coming soon. He also

informed the Commisson on the need for new flooring in the conference area of the Sheriff Department, Sheriff Collins will get some quotes together for the next meeting. He also requested a new desk for the booking area. The cost of the desk would be no more than $700.00 and would match the other desk in that same office. Commissioner Vliem moved to approve the purchase. Second by Commissioner Pagel; and by vote; Laufer voted aye, Vliem voted aye, and Pagel voted aye. Motion carried. His last request was for the purchase of a new body camera as one is completely not charging. The replacement cost is $550.00. The last cameras were purchased in 2014 and they all are outdated. He has the funding available in this year’s budget for the one camera. Commissioner Vliem moved to approve the purchase of one body camera at the cost of $550.00. Second by Commissioner Pagel,and by vote; Laufer voted aye, Vliem voted aye, and Pagel voted aye. Motion carried. NDSU EXTENSION:Hannah Nordby, Adams County Extension Agent updated the Commission on her department. She has been very busy attending and providing trainings and classes. She is interested in starting “Café Talks” in the future. These would be informal meetings or talk sessions held at local restaurants. She would plan these on a rotation basis between the different eating establishments. She envisions them to be like the Chamber’s “Lunch and Learn” sessions. FSA/NRCS LEASE UPDATE:A letter from United States Department of Agriculture was received. The County has been working on a new lease agreement for the FSA/NRCS Office Building. The Federal Government changed the way the lease was set up, which added several updates to the building. The letter states that the lease that had been previously started was now cancelled, as the Department of Agriculture is coming up with a new lease agreement. Commissioner Laufer called the office to discuss the future lease. They will provide more information on the upcoming lease agreement when it is finalized. FISCHBEIN TOWNSHIP: The maintenance agreement for the Symanowski Road was not signed by the Fischbein Township. After much discussion about options, Commissioner Laufer decided he would work with Aaron Roseland, State’s Attorney, on a new agreement, changing from a ten year to possibly a 5 year agreement. BROSZ ENGINEERING: Billy Doerr updated the Commission on the upcoming ADA improvement work schedule. The parking lot work will begin late August early September. The inside work to the bathrooms can be started at any time. Muth Plumbing will be the contractor working on the inside work. Billy will contact John Muth.Billy updated on the possibility of purchasing some of the asphalt millings from the Construction Company in charge of paving in the Lemmon area. Commissoner Laufer will contact them to see if they would be interested in selling. The millings could be used as temporary fixes to some of the roads in the County. LIBRARY HAIL DAMAGE REPAIRS: Librarian Mrs. Kristy received a quote to fix the roof of the library from the damage last June 2018. The estimate was from Hiddenwood Creek Construction in the amount of $7,850.00. Commissioner Vliem moved to approve the estimate from Hiddenwopd Creek Construction with the stipulation that the work needs to be completed on or before August 31,2019. The bid amount is to be paid at the time of completion. Second by Commissioner Pagel and by vote; Laufer voted aye, Vliem voted aye, and Pagel voted aye. Motion carried. The auditor was directed to mail

the signed acceptance letter to Jeb Boxrud/Hiddenwood Creek Construction. RESIGNATIONS: A letter of Resignation from William Earl, sheriff deputy was provided. Commissioner Vliem moved to approve the resignation but wanted to thank Deputy Earl for the service he has provided. Second by Commissioner Pagel, and by vote; Laufer voted aye, Vliem voted aye, and Pagel voted aye. Motion carried. STATE’S ATTORNEY Aaron Roseland met with Commission briefly, as he has been very busy with upcoming cases. He agreed to work with Dusty on drafting a new letter for Fischbein Township road maintenance agreement. ADAMS COUNTY POLICY UPDATES:The Commissioner requested the Auditor to contact the NDACO about some possible employee policy changes. The Auditor agreed to contact the NDACO to get answers to the questions. ADVERTISING FOR HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT: The position vacated by Theo Schalesky was advertised in the State job ad. The ad has now been completely published. Commissioner Pagel moved to have the ad for the position put on Job Service as well as published in the Eido paper for the next two weeks. ‘what can we grow here?’” he said, “It was a ver y young community agriculturally. Many just wanted to know if what they grew back home in Germany, Nor way, or the Netherlands would work in this region.” Since its conception in 1909, the center has gone through many changes. With funding from the North Dakota Legislature, additional facilities and infrastructure were built in the early 1900’s. The early expansion didn’t last, however. All funding stopped during the Great Depression, and most research progress ground to a halt from 1935 to 1942. Over the sevenyear period, the center sat dormant. “ The facilities had deteriorated so much, that the only thing they could raise was sheep,” said Schauer. “ That’s how we ended up with sheep.” Eventually, the center was refunded and restarted in 1942 with 30 ewes. Since the 1942 restart, the Hettinger Research Extension Center has continued to expand, even through turbulent times. Through the 90’s and early 2000’s, the center started to diversify its interest and establish new programs to start many new areas of research. Over the past 30 years, the center has added research programs into new areas of agriculture like weed science, agronomy, pollinator studies, and wildlife sciences. Even through all the changes, Schauer said that the intention of the research center has remained consistent throughout the years. Its primar y focus has always been research. “At the end of the day, it’s about research,” he said. “ We are tr ying to find new knowledge, and generate answers to new questions.” Looking for ward, Schauer said that he is excited about what the center will be able to accomplish as it continues to expand. He continued, “ We feel like we are finally able to achieve the 1907 vision of an agricultural research center that can answer any question, not just a sheep or corn question.”

EDITORIAL Hat Tips Hello, You can feel the fall in the air. Oh, I know we’ve had some hot days. And the summer thundershowers have been rolling through the Dakotas at a pretty steady pace. But the nights have been cool and we had one morning in the forties this past week. It will get hot again, but you can see fall is getting close. Now with fall getting close you have kids getting ready for school. I think football was

Your community's views invented to make young boys more anxious to go back to school. Especially if you live in Harding County, South Dakota. The Ranchers take their football seriously. A lot of my friends have kids or grandkids heading off to college. Some close. Some traveling across the nation. If you are in agriculture this is a bad idea. Because the kids will learn something. And you know, as well as I do, how things should be done. You’ve always done them that way, and your dad did it that way, and his dad did it that way. A case in point is the

young man who left his home in Southwest North Dakota and attended NDSU. It used to be the agricultural school, or cow college. I attended that school briefly. But that’s another story. Anyway, this young man headed off to college. Four-year degree in ag econ and animal science. He had learned a lot! This ranch had always fed a pretty good bunch of their calves. They had top-notch cattle and they always had buyers ready to bid when these cattle were finished. When laddie came home from cow college, he stepped

right in to help Dad with the cattle feeding. He had learned all about nutrition in his four years at State. He could balance a ration and knew when he needed to up the protein or increase the energy intake. He had learned to keep meticulous records and recorded every dime of input into this pen of wonderful steers. When the cattle were sold, Dad and son both beamed with pride. The steers were all choice and a handful graded prime. They topped the market. But the market was poor. That happens a lot when you are in agriculture.

The son went over the records dutifully. They had lost $178 per head! He took the books over to Dad and went over all the input costs, the death loss, interest on loans…Everything. When he finished, his Dad calmly looked at him and said, “Son, we will never do that again.” The son felt bad and quietly replied, “We will never feed cattle again?” “No”, Dad replied, “We will never keep records again.’

celebrate with Taz who was in the rodeo that day. They got to go swimming and visit with some of Amanda’s relatives. Knox is walking all over now, so it’s going to be hard to keep track of him. Reub’s brother Doug Olson, our granddaughter Lanie Klug, and Amanda’s Aunt Kim (Hight) Berberich also had birthdays on Wednesday. Happy birthday to all! Casey and Trig went over to help Bill Holt work his cows at the corrals at our east place on Wednesday. Jace and Jarret Jenson also came to help Bill and Mollie, so they were able to finish before lunch. Doug Doll went to help Bill work his cows up at the home place on Thursday. Dixie Smith sent us some more local history that Blanche Ames had collected. One of things she sent was an article about Harold and Floyd Carr from Reva that was in an Associated Press article in June of 1979. A day later I was going

through some of my late mother’s old letters and found the same article that Mom’s old friend Nina Wolhow, who was raised in South Dakota and lived in Michigan, had sent Mom that had been printed in the Detroit Free Press on June 29, 1979. It was the same article with different headlines. The South Dakota headline read “Sod House Built in 1910 Still Home to Brothers”. The Michigan headline read “For them, it’s sod-burbia”. What an interesting coincidence to find both articles about the same time. Little Evan Anderson, youngest child of Chet and Mandy Anderson, was bitten by a rattlesnake on Thursday. He was airlifted to Bismarck where he seems to be doing well. Those rattlesnakes are dangerous! Just a reminder that the Vanished South Dakota Documentary filmed in Harding and Perkins Counties is scheduled to air on Monday Aug. 19th at 6pm MT on SDPB TV.

The Motorcycle Rally is still going on in Sturgis this week, so I’ll leave you with this: A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated on him and when he came round he was relieved when they told him all had gone to plan and he was going to be fine. But the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest. He was worried that something may be wrong but he was still too weak from the surgery to do anything. Eventually, he managed to pull his hospital gown down enough to check what was causing the discomfort. When he looked down at his chest he saw three wide strips of ultra-adhesive tape stuck firmly to him. Written on it in large black letters was the message: “Get well soon… from the nurse you gave the ticket to last week. I’ll be around to remove the tape later.”

Grand River Roundup Reub and I went to the Perkins County Fair in Bison last Friday evening for the supper and Talent Show at the arena. The Buer family and some other locals did a great job, making it a really enjoyable evening. Tracy, Todd, Pete, and Lance Buer and their sister Pam all performed. Lynn Buer and his wife were also there, although he didn’t get up on the stage with his siblings. Corey Buer was the only one missing, but hopefully they will all be on the stage next year. Irean Jordan from Faith sent me a nice letter this week with a question some of you may be able to answer. If you can, please let me know because I’ve asked everyone who might know and came up empty. Irean’s father was Mat Clauson, who lived north of Faith in Perkins County. Known as “Little Matt the Wolfer”, he was hired by the government to kill wolves that were killing livestock for local ranchers. Irean said that sometime before 1910,

her Dad picked up four big sets of horns from Texas Longhorns in northwestern Harding County. A big cattle outfit had trailed three or four hundred head of Longhorns up from Texas in the late fall, too late for them to get ready for the hard Dakota winter and they died in a winter storm on the bed ground. There is a map in John O. Bye’s book “Back Trailing in The Heart of the Short Grass Country” showing where all the big cattle companies ranged before there were any fences and the ones that I found in northwest Harding County were the Turkey Track, the E6, and the CY so it might have been one of those. There are lots of weddings this summer. Megan Adams and Garrett Clark got married in Lemmon Saturday evening with lots of locals attending. The Bridal Shower for Ashley Goldade, bride elect of Kent Wilkinson, was at Slim Buttes Lutheran after church last Sunday with a good crowd. Ashley and Kent will be married

in Timber Lake on September 13th. Amy Tierney and Brad Johnson are getting married August 23rd in Sturgis and our grandson Till Olson and Kelsey Swales are getting married September 21st at the Cadillac Ranch south of Belle Fourche. Our granddaughter Bryce Olson is marrying Braxton Hespe this Saturday at the Elk Creek Resort near Piedmont, so Missy has been really busy getting everything ready for the wedding. All I’m doing is cooking the beef and trying to find something nice to wear. We got some nice rains this week on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday that added up to almost an inch of much needed moisture. They weren’t so lucky up north of here though. A lot of fields and gardens got hailed out. Don’t you just hate that hard water? There are also some birthdays to report. Knox turned one year old this Monday and Amanda took him and Copper to the PRCA rodeo in Spearfish to

31, 1930. Mary and her two sisters enjoyed a happy childhood living in various towns around North Dakota due to her father’s work. She graduated from Bowbells High School, attended Jamestown College, and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics at NDSU. This led her to spend the rest of her life, whether in career or in daily living teaching and doing the things she loved: cooking, sewing, crocheting, and quilting with great abandon. Mary was married to Charles Johnk in 1955, a union that gave her four children and ultimately her greatest joy of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary met Alvin Whitmer in 1976 on a church sponsored trip to Washington DC. They soon married and she moved to Hettinger where she immediately became active in the United Methodist Church, the Shriners, and the community. Mary taught vaca-

tion bible school, did lay speaking, directed the choir, sang, and taught children, youth, and adult Sunday school. She was thrilled to have had the opportunity to lead the adult class from her hospital bed just two weeks ago. She was heavily involved and found joy in all Naja Shriner activities over the years. Some of her favorites included fund-raising for the Shrine circus, providing her favorite baked goods for the annual picnic, bus trips to visit the Shrine hospital in Minneapolis, and bonding with the women supporting the Masons. After retiring from her Extension Service career, Mary transitioned to substitute teaching and reveled in the students knowing her as “Grandma” for nearly 20 years. For many years each graduating senior received a doily made especially for him or her, boys last names were beautifully designed with Mary frequently commenting on the length of
