Have fun while learning at the Umpqua Discovery Center By SARAH KELLY For Country Media, Inc. In an effort to revitalize the City of Reedsport, city staff sought solutions to their failing economy. They were quick to realize that the underutilized waterfront area could be the solution to their problems. The beautiful Umpqua River and surrounding estuaries were ideal for tourism. City officials brought to life the Riverfront Revitalization project and in 1986, a committee was formed to get this project underway. In 1993 the 7500 sq ft Umpqua Discovery Center was officially opened, successfully bringing money back into the community all while protecting and preserving their amazing waterfront. The center educates visitors about the natural and cultural history of the Lower Umpqua area. The center is primarily

self-guided and open to all ages. They also have a gift shop for those wishing to purchase a keepsake. Two areas are showcased within the discovery center. The first area, Pathways to Discovery, is their natural history exhibit, where you will be taken on a simulated outdoor hike. You will spend your time learning all about the plants and animals of the area as you traverse through all four seasons. As you walk the path you will find buttons to press for various animal and bird sounds. “There’s a bear cave and you can slide into [it] where you learn all about bears,” said Diane Novak, the center’s director. Novak added that there is also an interactable weather station that tells storm stories from the past as well as exhibits that provide information on rain, wind and atmosphere. According to Novak, their weather station and bear cave were done with help from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). As you journey through the Pathways of Discovery you will pass, first through winter, which is where the bear cave lies before moving on to the weather station. Continuing, you will find yourself in a high mountain meadow during spring. From there

you cross the dunes during a summer sunset, eventually ending your adventure in the Subterranean Education Room whichfeatures videos on skeletons, animal homes, weather and seashore. They opened their 50-seat video theater room in 2006. which has over 30 films available for guests. “People can come in and watch those, they’re listed by title and how long they are. There’s one on the lighthouse, anything from the lighthouse to the elk, to the whales, to the dunes. [There’s also the] history of Reedsport,” Novak said. The center’s second area is called Tidewaters and Time, which is their cultural history exhibit. In this area you will travel back in time, learning about the early Kuuich (Quuiich, Lower Umpqua or Kuitsh) Natives and early explorers like Jedediah Smith. You will be able to listen to stories told by the early pioneers about living in the town, as well as watch videos on how logging used to be done. “All along there’s stories from the past to listen to. Also in the, ‘I remember, I remember,’ you can go in there

and listen to the oral histories,” says Novak referring to their oral histories area. The, “I remember, I remember” exhibit is where all the stories are told from the perspective of early settlers. Novak said that, even today, they continue to record the oral histories of people who grew up in the area, adding their stories to the showcase. When continuing through the exhibits you will eventually come across the center’s fish cannery and tidewater town. This exhibit combines historical artifacts with modern technology to add lights and sound for a heightened experience. “There’s a grocery store, barber shop, mercantile and it tells you how life revolved around the tides in the early days, in the early 1900s,” said Novak.

In the su mmer, the discovery center hosts free outdoor concerts for the community, bringing in a variety of bands. “A lot of times it’s the classics like rock ’n’ roll, oldies but if we find a good jazz band or blues band, we’ll bring in all kinds. We try to showcase local bands,” said Novak. Concerts are performed on Thursday evenings. They currently only do three concerts, two in July and one in August. The center offers its theater room for those wishing to rent it out for things like baby showers, weddings and so forth. They charge $4 for kids 5-15 years old and $8 for adults. Paciﬁc Sushi & Grill: serving up fresh, sustainable and delicious food

By SARAH KELLY For Country Media, Inc. At the forefront of everything they do, Pacific Sushi & Grill in Brookings operates with one very important thought in mind, sustainability. This key driving force ensures that every piece of fish that comes through its doors is traceable back to its source.

Pacific sushi works solely with fresh fish, sourced from fishermen and fisheries they have personally reviewed for quality and sustainability. Before starting Pacific Sushi, owner Michael Horgan had been a commercial fisherman. Horgan moved to Brookings in 2011, opening Pacific Sushi a few years later in 2014.

With a boat still at his disposal, Horgan frequently takes it out with his employees and catches many of the fish they use in their restaurant. “We’ll take employees out on the boat … and we’ll go catch tuna for a day … and we’ll actually serve that fish in the restaurant that night,” said Horgan. Head Chef and General Manager of Pacific Sushi, Christian Snyder, has recently added the title of business partner to his list of responsibilities. Snyder strives to help Horgan grow Pacific Sushi while maintaining the restaurant’s firm standpoint on sustainability. Snyder has been with the business for six years, having first started out washing dishes. With a strong passion to improve and be more involved with the restaurant, his responsibilities quickly grew. Pacific Sushi takes making sushi beyond what most other restaurants do. Horgan and Snyder have a deep respect for the food they work with and the Japanese culture behind it. “There’s quite a bit of etiquette that goes with this culture of food. … You really

have to understand the rules before you can even consider to break them and do some fusion type of stuff,” said Horgan. According to Horgan, Pacific Sushi is considered one of the top five sushi restaurants on the whole West Coast, “from San Diego all the way up to Canada.” The restaurant has been recognized by many for its delicious, fresh and carefully prepared dishes, such as the AAA (American Automobile Association), where they made it into their Via magazine for being one of the best places for local seafood. The amount of work each employee puts into the food may be hard to fully understand but it’s easy to taste when you bite into any of their fantastic menu items. As many ingredients as possible are purchased fresh from local sources within Oregon, often not too far from the restaurant, including the organic produce they use. “Anything that’s available locally, we’re going to try and get,” said Snyder. This includes their uni or sea urchin which is purchased fresh from a local source in Bandon.

2023 Curry County We Love It Here — Page 7 Making ethical choices and top-notch food that is still affordably priced can be challenging but Horgan and Snyder would not want to do it any other way. “We try to do the local farm-to-table type thing,” said Horgan. “We just try to make the best choices that we can and feed everybody like they’re our family.” Nothing used at Pacific Sushi comes from a jar or can. Everything is made fresh, including all of their sauces which are made in-house. Everything from their ramen base and teriyaki sauce to their spicy mayo, gyoza sauce and rice seasoning is made fresh nearly every day.

Their mouthwatering rolls will leave you never wanting to eat at another sushi restaurant again. Rolls, like their Redwood, made using tempura prawns, real crab, avocado and scallions, topped with fresh ahi tuna and their Bruce Lee which is a tempura-fried extra spicy salmon roll, topped with scallions, fire-roasted jalapeños and their dynamite and sriracha sauce. They also have a great selection of vegetarian rolls, including their Harmony roll which is made with tempura jalapeños, mango, avocado and cream cheese, finished with a pineapple habanero marmalade and cilantro.

With a variety of classic and signature rolls, tempura fried rolls, vegetarian rolls, temaki (hand-rolled), nigiri and sashimi, you will have a hard time picking just one to try. Beef and burgers made of Wagyu beef, along with some delectable desserts are just a few of the additional dishes the restaurant cooks up for hungry diners. The idea of sourcing locally extends to all of the restaurant’s beef products which are typically purchased from farms in Brookings, Gold Beach and parts of eastern Oregon. The desserts that they don’t make in-house they even purchase from a baker in Crescent City. Aside from food, Pacific Sushi has an impressive list of drinks. According to Horgan, they offer one of the largest selections of whiskey imported from around the world. “We’ve got a huge selection of top-shelf scotch, ranging from upwards of $1,000 a bottle. So we’ve really developed our whiskey bar to kind of be a high-end thing there,” said Horgan. While they do offer alcohol, Pacific Sushi is family-friendly. All ages are now welcome to sit at any table within the restaurant, bar seating being the only place children are not allowed. To accommodate more families the restaurant opened up their lounge area, converting it into more family-friendly seating. As the restaurant continues to grow, “pulling what we can from the ocean… and continuing to use as much locally as we can … is pretty important to me,” said Snyder who strives to see the business source even more items from their immediate area as he looks for more ways to make that happen. Originally started by the Webster family in 2007, Superﬂy Distilling Company is now owned by Deon Shafer and Dylan Ridgley, who purchased the company in 2018. Using the same formula the Websters did, the company continues to make high-quality potato vodka at their distillery in Brookings.

Two dedicated people run the distillery, making the potato vodka in small batches, hand bottling and labeling each one. It takes around 10 pounds of russet potatoes to make just one bottle of Superﬂy’s smooth premium vodka. The process is slow and tedious but quality is essential to the company. Their clean, smooth potato vodka is unlike any other outside of Poland.

The award-winning vodka takes approximately seven to ten days to reach perfection before being bottled for sale. It is available for purchase in 75 liquor stores throughout Oregon, including Safeway. Their vodka can also now be

Port of Brookings Harbor: paradise for fishermen

By SARAH KELLY For Country Media, Inc. Full of public amenities, Bud Cross Park in Brookings is a fantastic local community park you could easily spend hours at with family and friends. The athletic park is located at 1130 Ransom Avenue in Brookings and is open from dawn until dusk. The park features a seasonal municipal swimming pool, two baseball fields, four tennis courts, a basketball court and a skate park. The municipal swimming pool is an outdoor pool with a variety of swim times and programs, open from June until August. The pool has an accessible chair lift, diving board, locker room, showers and restrooms. Swimmers who are not toilet trained are required to wear a swim diaper to go into the pool. The pool may also be rented out for private parties. They also offer both group and private swim lessons. Fees vary so be sure to verify prices ahead of time or check the current pool schedule. The structure was originally installed at Azalea Park in 1995.A large crowd gathered under bright, sunny skies and a balloon bedecked entry Oct. 19, to hear Brookings Public Works and Development Services Director Anthony Baron and Brookings Mayor Ron Hedenskog describe the history and redevelopment of the playground they called the “crown jewel” of Azalea Park.

Ray Batten watched as his three kids, Timothy 13, Isaiah, 11, and Joseph, 8years-old found their place within the crowd. “All three of mine have grown up here,” he said. “Now that we live across the street, we’re here every day.” In his address at the community celebration, Baron said Kidtown has had “more daily use than we’ve ever seen.”

As part of the rebuild, the surrounding fence incorporates 380 of the original fence boards engraved with the names of the original donors to Kidtown, always one of the park’s most popular features in 1995. All 380 of them were refinished

Nature’s Coastal Holiday made a $30,000 contribution as part of the budget for the project. The volunteer community group, since 1997, has provided Brookings with its festival of lights each holiday season.

In addition to the Kidtown upgrade, the parking lot has been resurfaced and improved, and a covered picnic area will be added soon.

Local veterans presented quilts for their service

SUBMITTED The Azalea Quilters Guild provides handmade quilts in their effort to thank our service men and women for the sacrifice and service they provide to protect our freedoms. At this year’s Azalea Quilt Show 23 veterans were awarded Quilts of Valor. All branches of the armed forces were represented. This year the Quilt of Valor organization has presented almost 400,000 quilts nationwide. Information

Members of the 19621963 classes of Bend Harbor High School were also presented with an additional 11 quilts at their class reunion in July.
