We the staff at the Headlight Herald felt like we needed to do more to highlight the many amazing accomplishments of our local students within our three school districts – Neah-Kah-Nie, Tillamook and Nestucca. Thus, the Tillamook County Student Spotlight was born. Traditionally, we’ve always ran somewhat of a “sports preview” for fall and winter sports and take a look at the upcoming games, players and coach’s goals. This time, we wanted to combine all that and include other student activities that get missed – such as band, choir, drama and more. Your Tillamook County Student Spotlight will be a quarterly publication that will only continue to get better. If you
don’t see your team or group represented here, please get in touch with us so we can get them in the next issue. We want to cover as many aspects of student-related activities as we can. Exciting things are on the horizon for the Nestucca High School football team. “We’re switching to double-wing offence,” said head coach Jeff Schiewe. “It’s a fairly compressed offence,” he explained, “but it opens things up a bit.” Why the switch?
“We thought it would increase our potential for victories,” he said. “I guess we’ll see.” His goal is to get his players back to state. They haven’t been in the playoffs the last two years. With what Schiewe called strong senior leadership, he
thinks they have a good chance. “I’ve been very impressed with my seniors,” he said. “All around this is a fun group – we’re going to have fun this season and I think parents and fans will have fun watching us and seeing those changes and improvements.”

Nestucca Volleyball: strong, experienced and hungry Nestucca Volleyball head coach John Elder has high hopes for this season, as all his girls from last year have returned. With two seniors, six juniors and two sophomores, “they’re kind of young but they’re experienced,” he said. “We’re looking pretty good.” The biggest challenge is their league, he said, which has several private schools. “Neah-Kah-Nie is always tough,” he said. “But we tried to play together as a team over the summer. “That’s the main difference between us and other

teams in our league; we don’t play year round. These girls are busy playing other sports and we want that, we encourage that, but it means less time we spend together as a volleyball team, so we have to work hard to keep up.” His goal this year is to make the playoffs and hopefully go to state. So far, it’s not an unfeasible goal, especially since his girls are used to playing with each other. “My experience is no matter how long you’ve played together, team chemistry is always something you need to work on,” he said.

Nestucca’s fall play – smaller and more sophisticated For the last couple of years, drama teacher Kelli McMellon said they’ve been performing some “outlandish plays, with lots of activity and a big cast.” This year, she wanted to try something different. “I wanted to be able to work with a smaller cast and a little more sophisticated production because the kids are ready for that with their drama training.” McMellon picked ‘Kindly Leave the Stage,’ a British farce about just how badly a play can go wrong. Written by John Chapman, McMellon said she picked this play based on how many students she think will audition and the talent pool of those students. “I try to find things that I think will fit with the students we have and that they’ll really be able to grasp and have fun with,” she said. “And usually if I think it’s funny it is.” McMellon added that her drama students usual return again and again to participate. “There’s something to be said for
the arts,” she said. “It draws a lot of kids.” Wyatt Peterson had the lead in last spring’s musical, Fiddler on the Roof as a newbie to theater. “He did just amazing – a very tal-
ented young man,” said McMellon. She also mentioned Andrea Polivka, who has been involved in several plays, calling her fearless. McMellon has directed roughly 20 plays for TAPA, but said teaching high school students has its benefits because, “they’re fearless. They will do anything for you whereas adults sometimes you have to work really hard to break down those reservations.” ‘Kindly Leave the Stage’ will premiere Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. at Nestucca Valley Jr./Sr. High School. Then again Nov. 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. Then, this spring will mark the 52nd musical performed by the school. “We’re very proud of that statistic,” McMellon said. “We’ve always pushed hard to keep arts in the schools because it’s a different way for kids to express themselves. “I’m really proud of these kids, I’m proud of our tradition and proud we as a school can still offer a multitude of diverse programs to help out students develop into the people they’re going to become.”

Nestucca’s band and choir holds on to the importance of the arts Nestucca’s choir might suffer from a lack of partic-
ipation and lack of funding, but one thing it does have is a teacher who won’t give up on it. “It’s hard not having a junior high choir to feed into high school,” said Kathleen Serven, who also serves as the band teacher for the high school and junior high. “That’s something I’d love to see come back.” Her choir is about average in size to what it’s been, with 17 students, but Serven said they’re always looking for more male singers. “If boys don’t keep singing through junior high then they tend to lose their confidence,” she explained. “Then they’re not as likely to start up again. Or, they try out their senior year and then wish they’d done it all four years.” Band doesn’t suffer from the same problem, thanks to a band program in fifth through eighth grade. Participation isn’t quite what it used to be, with 21 students this year. Both band and choir will perform a fall concert at the high school on Nov. 5. That is their major event all year, Serven said.

Large turnout for football bodes well for Pirates With nearly 40 players turning out for football this season, fourth-year head coach Scott Ross is excited that NeahKah-Nie was able to field a junior varsity team with a full schedule in addition to varsity competition. “Every year, the turnout has gone up. We want to keep it at that 40 number. For a school this size that’s pretty darn good,” said Ross. Considering NeahKah-Nie has a student population of approximately 200 with half of those boys, Ross’ enthusiasm is justified. With just eight players returning from last year, Ross and his assistants – Dennis Woodward, Greg Kelley, Mike Sims and George Young – will be depending on the 25 freshmen and sophomores who make up the ream’s roster to step up. “We’re going to be counting on more sophomores to fill in this year,” said Ross. “With a full JV schedule, those swing players that play both JV and varsity will be getting more experience.” Expectations are high, as they always are at the beginning of the season. “The goal is to finish high in league play and secure a playoff spot,” said Ross. Though
posting a losing record last year, the Pirates won some games and were, for the most part, more competitive. In three “games,” featuring 12 offensive snaps along with as many plays on defense, at the Northwest League Jamboree the end of August, the Pirates performed well against the likes of Knappa, Vernonia and Nestucca, scoring four times and giving up two scores in the three stanzas. “So far, the kids have been working hard and learning the system,” said Ross, who looks forward to more and more players with football experience joining the Pirates’ ranks in coming years, thanks to the parent-driven Neah-Kah-Nie youth football program. Next year, according to Ross, those eighth graders turning out for high school football will have at least three years of experience under their belts. If you missed out on the jamboree, you only have three more opportunities to see the Pirates in action at home – Sept. 13 against Naselle, followed by league games on Oct. 4 and 11, against Knappa and Gaston respectively.

Experience hopefully makes the difference for Lady Pirates volleyball team Having only lost one player from last year’s volleyball team to graduation, Neah-Kah-Nie High volleyball coach Jackie Vandecouvering is counting on returnees to assume the role of team leaders. “We’re young,” said Vandecouvering of her players. “We have seven to eight freshmen and three sophomore in addition to two juniors and four seniors. We’ve been practicing hard and it’s a matter of taking it one game at a time and playing aggressive volleyball.” The Lady Pirates got a early-season taste of competition at a jamboree held at Neah-Kah-Nie High Aug. 31, featuring eight high school teams, each playing four games. The Lady Pirates finished with two victories and two losses. Afterwards, the fifth-year coach said, “We shouldn’t have lost those two.” Vandecouvering sees Delphian and Gaston as the teams to beat in the Northwest League, but she doesn’t downplay her team’s chances. “As long as we’re consistent and play hard, we can beat any teams in our league.” One of those jamboree victories came against Gaston.

Among returning players the coach is counting on are junior Annie Kelly and sophomore and team captain Alaina Holm, who Vandecouvering sees as being a strong presence in the middle. Sophomore Sokcali Hanson will see time as center, a defensive specialist and libero, a player that wears a different color jersey and that can substitute for two players instead of one in the back row. A libero
can also report in and out of the lineup without reporting to the referee. “She’s the best passer on the team and she is quick,” said Vandecouvering of Hanson’s athletic abilities. Also back is assistant coach Brianna Stephens, now in her third year with the volleyball program. The Lady Pirates open their home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 7, with the NKN Invitational.

NKN cross country team looks m to uphold tradition of success Last year, it was the girls who turned out in numbers for the Neah-Kah-Nie cross country team. This year, it’s the boys, according to coach Brett Duer. Gone are five seniors from last year’s team, but returning is twosport athlete Logan Romig, a senior this year who also plays football for the Pirates. While the team said goodbye to Willa Childress, who graduated in June, Rebecca Savage, a junior, is out again this season. A seasoned runner with good speed, Duer looks for Savage to lead the girls in 2013. In recent years, Neah-Kah-Nie cross country teams have enjoyed success in league and Duer’s goal this year is more of the same, finish well at district competition and advance more runners to state. The Pirates were among the teams that participated in the Northwest League Jamboree at Neah-Kah-Nie Aug. 31. Other home meets include the league districts on Oct. 8, at Nehalem Bay State and the NKN Big Foot Classic the following week on Oct. 15, at the Friends Camp at Rockaway Beach.

THS Cross country team continues to improve Two years ago the Tillamook Distance Project took over Tillamook High School’s cross country team, under the leadership of Patrick Zweifel. In that time, much progress has been made due to an emphasis on year round running, community involvement and the recruitment of good, quality kids, Zweifel said. The team is made up of a quality group of kids, most of them very young. “To give you an example of how far we’ve come since even last year, the end of August we ran a mile repeats workout, the same workout we ran last year at the same time.” said Zweifel. “ We had five boys finish faster than our best boy last year. We had eight boys finish faster than our third man last year. That’s the making of a strong state placing team.” Zweifel said his goal over the summer was to have seven runners run faster than the third man last year.
The girl’s side has improved dramatically as well, running three of the Cowapa’s League’s top runners – Kestrel Bailey, Sabrina Polman, and Chloe Pampush. “We also have the Richard’s girls, Kaeti Richards and freshmen McKenzie Richards, who have the racing mentality of a tiger,” said Zweifel. He added that newcomers Amber Gibson and Carli Edgar also look to contribute. “Our goal is to make it to state which hasn’t been accomplished since the late 80’s.” The trick is for all the girls to stay healthy. Zweifel said his goal for the boys is to place in the top 5 at state. Hector Rojo is the top returning runner in the Cowapa League. Eulises Crus, Armondo Marquez, Andrew Jenck, Colin Atchison, Garrett Armstrong, Louis Gibson and others are all competing for varsity.
Zweifel said many of those boys have improved minutes in their 5k times. “They’ve listened to what I’ve been saying and they’ve been running regularly for a year now and all of a sudden they go from being on JV to beating some of the best in the Cowapa League,” he said. “Their progress has been amazing, to be honest.” An exciting development for the program has been the Ultimook Race, the Tillamook Cross Country Invitational which started that last year with 44 teams and 900 athletes participate. This year 71 teams signed up and 2,000 athletes participated. The race has been a good source of income for the program, but also the exposure of the race is good for younger kids to see what cross country is all about. The Ultimook Race, along with a junior high cross country program, is looking to really help the long term success of the cross country team.

Tillamook High School football simplifying approach Tillamook High School football Head Coach Matt Dickson said their approach last year was too complicated. This football season, he said, parents and fans will see a more simplified approach to plays. “It’s kind of a national trend right now,” Dickson explained, “to get back to just the fundamentals of the game and make things easier for the players.” This simplified approach could be important this season, seeing as how there’s a bigger freshman group than last year, when 20 seniors graduated. “Our inexperience is our weakest link at this point,”
he said. But don’t let that new blood make you nervous – these incoming freshman were an undefeated team in Junior High. “They’re a solid group of kids,” Dickson said. That, coupled with some strong returning players such as Matt Strang, David Waud and Isaac Stellflug, could be a recipe for success. “I’m feeling very confident in our abilities,” said Dickson. “We have a strong core group this year and there’s a lot of potential.” Dickson’s goals this season are to be league cham-
pions and go to state. But there’s more to a successful season than bringing home trophies, he said. “We also just want to improve and grow together as a team,” he said. “Right now we have really strong senior leadership and we’re starting strong with good attitudes and we want to keep that going.” Dickson has also added a few new coaches, who he said have added a new energy and good outlook to the team. “Our goal is to improve every day, never give up and work hard to the very last second.”

Tillamook Choir teaches more than just how to sing
The Tillamook High School choir might not be a team, per say, but acd) cording to their instructor Jerilee Henderson they’re like a family. “You could call us a team, because we’re like a big family,” she said. Henderson graduated 25 seniors last year and has gained about 25 new singers this year, with more expected to join as the year goes on. However Henderson worked with her new students in junior high, so their voices are prime and ready for action. “I trained them on correct singing techniques and how to read music,” she said. “So when they come into high school, they’re continuing with sight read-
ing and ear training and singing songs every day.” The choir family is currently working on their fall concert, Oct. 21. After that it’s the Christmas concert on Dec. 16. At that performance, the vocal ensemble will be singing the traditional “Carol of the Bells.” The vocal ensemble is a smaller group of singers that tours in the spring, as well as caroling at Christmas time and singing the National Anthem for the sports games. Henderson said she’d love to take her choir to state this year, but it’s not her end goal. “Basically I just look for good team work, a good spirit and good attitudes that can work to-
gether for a common goal of a fine performance.” Henderson emphasized the many aspects that choir can teach besides just singing techniques. “You have to depend on the others in your section,” she said. “You really learn to lean on each other.” Not to mention the discipline it takes learning all the music. “You really have to stick with it and apply yourself because it can be difficult when you have for or eight altos going on at the same time and only one or two of you in another part. “It really creates dependency on one another and you get to know your strengths.”

Mook Volleyball: new coach, new goals Report due tomorrow? “We have a lot of individual skill sets and it’s just learning to mesh together,” she said. Streeter said the biggest challenge facing her girls this year is their inexperience, so her season goals are just to work on their skills and learn to grow as a team. “They’re learning the game and improving every day,” she said. Her two returning seniors, Natalie Travis and Tessa Streeter (her
daughter), made varsity as sophomores and are bringing strong leadership to the team. “There’s a lot of positive attitudes and good sportsmanship all around,” said Streeter. Streeter said she’s anxious to see how her girls hold up against some of the harder teams in the league, such as Banks, Astoria and Scappoose. “We’re just going to have fun out there – it is a game after all.”

Tillamook High School volleyball fans will see a lot of new faces this year – including the coach, Meagan Streeter. Only two varsity players are returning from last year, making space for a majority of juniors, sophomores and freshman. “We’re young and inexperienced,” Streeter said. There’s also a big difference in ages, she added, but so far her team is playing well together.
