Bummer Summer: Country Cools

Historically Country radio shines during the summer, which makes it the most useful period for gauging the format’s overall health. Unfortunately, Country seems a bit under the weather. The July 2016 PPM survey marked the first time in five months and the first July that more stations were down in share than up as the format experiences summer lows rarely seen since PPM became currency more than five years ago. Ratings softness is especially apparent among Persons 18-34, the demographic that drove record highs in 2014 and arguably fueled a more pop-driven sound. A wave of popularity experienced in recent years appears to be over. So what exactly is happening and where are those flighty millennials off to now? Country Aircheck tapped Nielsen VP/Audience Insights Jon Miller to provide a more complete picture, not to mention a recovery update following the skiing accident that left him hospitalized for more than a month earlier this year (CAT 3/18). Countin’ Of Youth: “Enjoy it while it lasts” was the position many veteran programmers took as P18-34 shares began to peak in 2014. The demo is notably fickle and listeners within it may finally be moving on to newer and shinier things. “The one thing that does jump off the page is Country’s 18-34 shares,” Miller observes. Jon Miller The demo’s 2014 peaks were 10.6 (June), 10.2 (July) and August (10.1). Barring a significant swing one way or the other in August (to be released late this month), the summer of 2016 will likely go down as the format’s weakest since 2012 (see page 8). The better news is that other segments of the audience remain relatively steady, though not unaffected. P25-54, for example, are down little more than half a share since the highs registered in June and July of 2014 (8.4 for both). So where is the 18-34 crowd going? One clue is found in July’s year-over-year numbers, which grew most for Classic Hits, Hot AC, Classic Rock and Urban (continued on page 7)

Whisperin’ Bill: One For The Books

Country Music Hall of Famer, BMI Songwriting Icon and Grand Ole Opry member Bill Anderson’s biography title, Whisperin’ Bill Anderson: An Unprecedented Life In Country Music, isn’t an exaggeration. Beginning with Ray Price’s 1958 cover of “City Lights,” Anderson’s songs have charted in seven consecutive decades – a feat no other country songwriter has accomplished. His more recent hits include 2005 CMA Song of the Year “Whiskey Lullaby” and the 2007 ACM Single and Song of the Year “Give It Away.” Anderson’s nine lives include deejay, actor, game show/ talent show host, restaurant owner and even disco chart-topper. Anderson teamed with CMHoF’s Peter Cooper to write his memoir, out Sept. 1. Pre-order it here or here. My new show came on the air every afternoon at one o’clock, and for the first two and a half hours of my shift I played country music. Nothing but country music, and all the country music I wanted. Then about three-thirty, when the area high schools began to let out ... I rocked. I mean, up until the sun went down and our little thousand-watt daytime station signed off the air, I played Elvis and Jerry Lee and Chuck Berry and the Coasters and all the rest. And I liked it. Not as much as I liked country music, of course, but in those days rock ‘n’ roll was new and was a synonym for success. More than anything else in the world I wanted to be successful. My radio program slowly but surely began to build an Anderson at WGAU/Athens, GA in audience. The grown folks 1956. liked the country music I played and they seemed to respect my knowledge of the subject. The kids loved the loud rock and the fact that they never knew what I was liable to say or do next. I screamed and yelled. I deliberately screwed up commercials, messed up artists’ names and their song titles. I told jokes, I laughed when I should have been serious, and I played it straight when everyone else was cracking up. All over northeast Georgia it became the afternoon thing to do to turn the radio dial to 1270 and partake of the craziness. There were even a few times when our signal wasn’t confined to northeast Georgia. I snooped around and found out where the knob was on the transmitter that controlled the power output of the station, and I learned how to ease it up past our assigned thousand watts. It was illegal as robbing a bank, but when nobody was looking, I’d often do it. Some days when the ground was wet along the creek bank by our tower and nature was helping amplify our signal as well, listeners would phone me from parts of North Carolina, nearly one hundred miles away. Anderson’s songwriting success led him to Nashville and a decades-long career as both artist and writer. But by the mid-’80s he was no longer considered relevant as either. Then in 1992 Steve Wariner took Anderson’s “Tips Of My Fingers” back to the No. 1 spot on the charts, 32 years after Anderson’s version. On his hairstylist’s recommendation, Anderson called another of her clients, Vince Gill, and their co-writes – including Gill’s “Which Bridge To Cross (Which Bridge To Burn)” – led to Anderson’s re-

birth as a Music Row songwriter: “Bridge” knocked down a door that I’d thought was closed forever. I had written another hit song, my first on the charts in more than 12 years. ... Having written the song with an artist of Vince Gill’s stature gave me instant credibility within Nashville’s new songwriting community, with writers who had never before given Bill Anderson a second thought. I started calling them. More importantly, they started calling me. On writing with young songwriters: When I started writing again – and started co-writing for the first time – I knew I was going to have to adapt, and I was willing to do that. ... I let a lot of young kids tell me a lot of things, and I benefited from that, greatly. There’s no sense in worrying about what you’ve done in the past, or what the person in the room with you has accomplished. ... A blank sheet of paper is a blank sheet of paper, whether you’ve written one hundred hit songs or never written one. It’s the great equalizer, and it’s intimidating. But if you can transform that blank sheet into words and melody, rhythm and rhyme, that’s a victory. That’s the thrill of creation, and that edge of the knife never dulls. On his unexpected career resurgence: I write this roughly thirty-five years after I was finished, and two decades since I gave myself permission to try a new approach, to contribute and create rather than pine for what once was or what I thought ought to be. My late-life reality has been far richer than any ought-to-be I could have imagined. And I’d like to thank my hairstylist. –Wendy Newcomer

Some firsts are bigger – and louder – than others. So the No. 1 ascension of Chris Lane’s “Fix” means there are a lot of congratulations to go around. First to Lane and the folks who got it done led by Big Loud President Clay Hunnicutt, National Stacy Blythe and the promotion team of Roger Fregoso, Nikki Jimenez, Dave Kirth, Tyler Waugh and Maggie Abrams. The label’s founding partners, Seth England, Joey Moi, Craig Wiseman and Chief Zaruk, certainly deserve accolades as well. Record labels have launched with No. 1 singles in recent memory, and even with new artists, though generally under the auspices of existing label groups. To find a truly new entity (in Country, anyway) opening with a new artist Chris Lane No. 1, it might take going back to the Zac

Finally, KJUG/Visalia, CA has been operating on a back-up transmitter since July 29 and the market’s Mediabase monitor is unable to pick up the station. The last two have grown consistently year over year since 2012 and Classic Hits generated its best two PPM showings P18-34 in each of the last two months. Pie Wholes: Miller says there’s an important caveat to all this, particularly with regard to P6+ and 25-54. “Share represents how much of the overall pie your station is getting,” Miller says. “What’s interesting is that if you look at 6+ and 25-54, the shares are down year to year, but the audience is trending up a little. So the overall pie has grown, at least mildly.” Why? Look no further than evolving PPM measurement following Nielsen’s rollout of its enhanced CBET technology last year. The company made improvements to counter widespread adoption of the Voltair processor, which was being used to overcome perceived deficiencies in PPM encoding. As for how much more audience is being captured, Nielsen found an average increase of 15% overall when compared with

differences vary by month and format, Miller says, and Country has experienced less of an increase than the formats mentioned. In March, for example, Nielsen put Country’s increase in the neighborhood of 7% (CAT 3/31). Peaks And Valleys: Country radio could bounce right back in 2017, of course, a possibility illustrated beautifully by Miller himself. In March he and a friend decided to do some backcountry skiing on Mt. Washington, a 6,288-foot New Hampshire peak and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi. “The Reader’s Digest version is that we got ourselves into a really dangerous situation and I fell 1,000 feet down the mountain,” Miller says, explaining that he had to be rescued and airlifted to a hospital more than 100 miles away. “It was pretty crazy – like something you’d see on the Discovery Channel.” More concerning than the bruises and broken bones – and there were many – was the brain injury Miller sustained. “The cognitive aspect of it was the big concern and that’s really what my recovery was based on,” he says. “I was extremely lucky in making a full recovery and to get back to my normal self and back at work. That doesn’t always happen and I’m very blessed by it.” Takeaways? “You can only imagine,” Miller quips. “It’s certainly a reminder that you are small and mother nature is in charge. I do still want to ski and am teaching my kids to ski, but I will definitely steer clear of the extreme stuff in the future. I got away with one here.” Miller was otherwise humbled by the outpouring of support. “My wife, family and I were just overwhelmed and I want to say thank you to everyone in the industry who reached out to us,” he continues. “There were so many and it was really wonderful. We live in a cynical world in cynical times and that was awesome.” Reach Miller here.
