Musical Event Of The Year? Events

Programmers may feel they’ve been utilizing the “additional artist” field in their music scheduling software more than ever ... and they’re not imagining things. While not unusual in other formats, the multi-artist collaboration has been a relatively rare occurrence in country; however, country collaborations have now reached record levels. In 2011, a total of five collaborative songs entered the chart, with three becoming No. 1 hits – “Remind Me” by Brad Paisley & Carrie Underwood, “Old Alabama” by Paisley f/Alabama and “Knee Deep” by the Zac Brown Band f/Jimmy Buffett. This year, by contrast, has already had 16 collaborative songs enter the chart – more than 25% of all entries. Three of those have reached No. 1, including the current No. 1 song from Jason Aldean and Underwood, plus three more in this week’s top 10. What has led to the jump in collaborations, and how is radio handling the influx? “Collaborations and features have long been something artists have pursued,” says Taylor Lindsey Sony/Nashville SVP/A&R Taylor Lindsey. “When they go to record an album, often they’re thinking about other artists who’ve inspired them that they can bring in on a song. That’s nothing new. What is new is the volume we’re seeing. And it’s intentional for a couple of reasons. The main reason is artists haven’t had the opportunity to collaborate on the road since COVID started. Meanwhile, they had more downtime to write and record new music, which gave them more opportunity than ever to do these collaborations in the studio.” Increased focus on streaming and engagement numbers could play a part, but Lindsey says most artists don’t think that way. “Record labels look at those metrics, and it’s definitely something we consider when discussing collaborations,” says Lindsey. Ford called to tell me I had made it into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Looking at the list of other nominees, I didn’t think there was any chance I’d get in! The people in that Hall of Fame are the reason I wanted to start writing songs. I didn’t really start writing stuff for other artists until the late 2000s, so to have this much success so quickly is mind-blowing – like getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame while you’re still playing! I don’t think I’ve ever worked harder than I do now, and I feel that way about most of the writers in this town. We hear these stories about hit songs being written on a bar napkin one night “back in the day,” but that doesn’t happen to us. We’re not at the bar every night, and it’s not as romantic as those old stories. We’re in writing rooms every day of the week. Ben Hayslip and I didn’t really have the idea for “Honey Bee.” It was something I found in a magazine that said Huckabee, which I mispronounced as huckleberry. That turned into honeysuckle, which somehow turned into honeybee. If we hadn’t been at that exact place and time with that magazine laying on the table, it never would have been written. It’s like fishing – you’re not going to catch anything lying in bed. I always have my antenna up. I look at billboards and eavesdrop in restaurants. I constantly stockpile ideas and melodies; they come together when they’re supposed to. My job isn’t to tell an artist I’ve written them a hit. My job is to write stuff so good they look at me and tell me it’s a hit. For the first time, I took an entire month off and went out west. I didn’t listen to the radio or look at the chart or iTunes, and I kept that going when I got home. I’ve officially been off of chartwatch for nearly six months. I don’t know how well my songs are streaming, and sometimes I don’t even know when one of my cuts is becoming a single. It got to where it depressed me and made me anxious, and that’s not what songwriting is supposed to be. Watching the trajectory of a song for the next 52 weeks isn’t going to help inspire my next song. I’m tired of treating music like the stock market, so I’m not going to do it anymore. accident left him blind in his right eye and with the nickname “Spooner.” He was an original part of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section at the renowned FAME Studios. In addition to his songwriting prowess, he played on Spooner Oldham numerous hits including “When A Man Loves A Woman” and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as a sideman in 2009. My grandaddy built the house I grew up in. When I was 10 or 11, we were there and he said, “Lindon, what do you think you’re going to do when you grow up?” He thought I might be a good carpenter, and I said one word: music. When I was a teenager, I started working as a musician at FAME Studios, which were just being built. This community had a lot of successful bands that played fraternity and sorority parties and proms. My band was hired pretty frequently, and we all got to know each other, so when “You Better Move On” (by Arthur Alexander) was recorded, my friend David Briggs played piano, and they asked me to play Hammond organ. I’m a sound guy. I remember Don Schroeder produced “I’m Your Puppet,” and I noticed the glockenspiel – the little bell – was at low volume when we recorded it, but when it got on the radio it was pretty loud. So, I learned that radio stations had their own processing. Back in those days, we’d get something we recorded in the studio and go to the local radio station, WLAY/Florence, AL. The DJs were friendly; they’d play it on the air, and we’d go out in the car to listen to it. You’d get a true definition of what you really had. A lot of my favorites I’ve written are the same as what the general public bought and proclaimed to be hits: “Sweet Inspiration,” originally recorded by the group Sweet Inspirations. Freddy Weller and I wrote one called “Lonely Women Make Good Lovers.” Bob Luman recorded it and, about 10 years later, Steve Wariner did, as well. And Percy Sledge recorded “It Tears Me Up.” I follow Dan Penn’s tradition. He said these young boys and girls ask him, “What do you do to write a song, do you talk about personal experiences?” And he said, “Just make something up.” If

OFF THE RECORD Off The Record with Back Blocks/Big Loud’s Lily Rose: I know this might be an odd answer, but honestly, the pandemic-inspired life adaption I’m going to carry forward is exercise. We had to adapt and do bodyweight workouts/go on runs during the quarantine period, and it has helped me push myself when I might not have enough time for the gym or am stuck in a hotel room. I did as many Instagram Lives as I LILY ROSE could during the pandemic, and that was a super cool way to stay engaged with fans and listeners. Downloading TikTok was definitely the biggest avenue I have seen yet to connect with fans. It’s given unsigned and signed artists an outlet for getting their music heard around the entire world. It changed my life. I grew up in Atlanta and listened to a hip-hop station called 95.5 The Beat (RIP), as well as [WKHX] Kicks 101.5 Country (now New Country 101.5) and [WUBL] 94.9 The Bull. The first time I heard myself on the radio was when The Highway premiered “Villain” in Dec. 2020. Listening to Storme Warren talk about how special my voice is, and how different “Villain” is as a song, was extremely special. I heard myself on the radio on accident in Atlanta in February as I was on my way back to Nashville from a soldout show. I heard “Hey y’all, it’s your girl Lily Rose,” come through my dashboard. I was so shocked! I’m extremely proud of the relatability of the songs on this first project [Stronger Than I Am]. I’m blown away by what Joey Moi was able to do in the studio with these 10 songs, especially with them all being so different yet cohesive. To top it all off, the songwriters are a massive part of this project, and I would be nowhere without them. I drink a beer at 10am before every Georgia Bulldogs football game. “Beer before 10, Dawgs win” is a motto I live by. My favorite country song of all time is “I’ll Be The Moon” by Dierks Bentley featuring Maren Morris. Ryan Hurd, Heather Morgan and Matt Dragstrem wrote it, and I think it is one of the coolest and most unique concepts I’ve heard in a long time. You somehow end up cheering for the cheating partner in the story, and I think their ability to make the listener do that is incredible. So yeah, I guess I wish I could have been in the room for that song! I also can’t turn off Dustin Lynch and Mackenzie Porter’s “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You.” So dang hitty.

you feel like you’ve got to write from personal experience, then go for it. There are no limits to writing a song. It takes time and effort and desire. The key is desire. How long can you hold on to that? Sometimes it’s not easy to get where you‘re going. Desire keeps you holding on. –Chris Huff

Spotlighting inductees ahead of the Nov. 1 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala concludes with Amy Grant. The six-time Grammy winner was the first contemporary Christian artist to have a platinum record and the first to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, 1991’s Heart In Motion generated crossover hits “Baby Baby,” “Every Heartbeat,” “Good For Me,” “I Will Remember You” and “That’s What Love Is For.” Inspirations for songs come from some of the most unlikely places. I remember talking to my sister Mimi one night after her oldest son left for college, back when we had land lines and phones had cords. She mentioned buying an extended cord for her phone so that she could pull it into the bathroom with her when taking a bath because she didn’t want to miss the possibility of Logan phoning home. That image stuck with me and was part of the inspiration for “Missing You” which had the line: “I cannot hear the telephone jangle on the wall and not feel a hopeful thrill.” Keith Thomas sent me the track and title for “Baby Baby.” It was so hooky, and I was thrilled he wanted me to record it, but it needed a finished lyric. He felt strongly it needed to be a love Baby, Baby: Grant with daughter Millie. song based on the “Baby Baby” idea of his track, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around the idea. I’d drive around listening to the track trying to find the right romantic angle for the lyric, and nothing felt right. Then one day I walked in the back door of our home and saw my six-week-old daughter Millie. I looked at her face, and suddenly, I had the inspiration I needed. I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote the lyrics in about 30 minutes. My favorite getaway is a farm I bought in the early ‘90s. It isn’t fancy, but it has two primitive cabins that sit on a hillside where

Vince and I got married. It is also the hillside where my parents’ ashes are buried. One night in the spring of 1995, I was staying overnight there and, after the kids settled down, I grabbed my guitar and under the light of a full moon started working on the melody and lyric for “Somewhere Down The Road.” A couple of years later, I was asked to sing that song at the memorial service for the kids who had died during the Columbine shooting. That is the most magical part about songwriting ... songs start in one place but find an audience that takes them places the writer never could have imagined. –Caitlin DeForest

Reba McEntire has charted in six decades (‘70s-’20s) while Eddy Arnold and George Jones reign as the chart longevity champions, each having appeared on songs in seven decades from (‘40s-’00s for Arnold and ‘50s-’10s for Jones). “But from the creative perspective, I don’t think artists are digging in and making those asks to try to tap an additional fan base. They’re going on what is inspiring them and who they’d like to sing with.” Lindsey cites one of this year’s No. 1 collaborations, “Famous Friends” by Chris Young and Kane Brown. “In that example, the duet definitely benefitted from those two fan bases coming together, but the way it happened was completely organic. There wasn’t a meeting about putting them together.” For those on the radio side, the increase in collaborations means more to contend with when scheduling music. “It does make for a small challenge when looking at artist separation,” says Audacy Regional Brand Manager & WUSN/Chicago PD Marci Braun. “I keep both artists’ keywords on the song to help space it out. I’m at about 30 minutes for Marci Braun separation now with collabs.”

Newly named Hubbard KNUC APD/MD Bryan “B-Dub” Washington has narrowed artist separation down to about 20 minutes. “As long as there are a few songs in between a collab with an artist featured and one of their songs as a primary artist, then I don’t mind,” he says. “If you’re still trying for 45-minute Bryan “B-Dub” artist separation, you’re doing it wrong. Pop Washington has had this ‘challenge’ for years.” Artist separation has also been narrowed at Hubbard WIL/St. Louis, where MD Marty Brooks says, “I’m allowing a 15-minute separation right now, so if it’s Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood, I’m okay if 15 minutes later ‘Blown Away’ comes on. Otherwise, someone may not hear that song for three or four days.” Brooks says his playlist this week has 12 currents that are duets, plus another nine in recurrent. “It becomes hard to schedule when you have a song in power and another in sub-power from the same artist. It takes a little longer to schedule music; I’m just trying to make sure I’m not playing duets back-to-back.” Scheduling logistics aside, is there concern over listener fatigue on collaborations? “As long as it’s a hit, it doesn’t matter,” says Washington. “It’s not like [listeners] have a Marty Brooks Mediabase log-in; just play the songs that research and consume.” Brooks adds, “I don’t think listeners are like ‘they played four duets this hour,’ they’re just listening for their favorite songs.” Braun concurs: “A great song is a great song, no matter if it’s a collaboration or a solo artist.” There is some concern about the sheer volume of event records. “Some great collaborations are getting lost in the shuffle,” says Brooks. Washington adds, “[They feel like] less of an ‘event’ for sure.” However, the positives still outweigh the negatives. “Country artists hang out all the time with each other, it’s very unique to our genre,” says Braun. “It’s awesome that those friendships carry over to radio hits.” Reach Braun here; Brooks here; Lindsey here; Washington here. –Chris Huff CAC
