Justin Case Looks Back On 34 Years

After dedicating “All I Need Is You” to wife Ronda Aurand on Valentine’s Day, Summit/Wichita, KS OM and KFDI PD/midday host Justin Case concluded his last break and hung up his headphones. Literally. It was an emotional moment for the 34-year radio veteran, who revealed in January that he would be leaving his job to go care for his 88-year-old father in Indiana (CAT 1/17). Case had been with KFDI since 2012, following previous Country programming jobs at WDSY/Pittsburgh, WYRK/Buffalo, WUSN/Chicago, WWYZ/Hartford, WZZK/Birmingham and WPKX/Springfield, MA. Just prior to his departure, he chatted with Country Aircheck about his remarkable career. CA: It takes courage to walk away from your career, right? JC: I’m doing this because I feel a pull to do it. You don’t want to have that nagging thought in the back of your head that you were just unavailable. I just don’t like the sound of that. Will this be retirement for you, or do you Justin Case hope to get back into radio one day? Once you’re out, it’s very, very difficult to get back in. So, I don’t necessarily have a plan to be back in radio, but when it comes to my air work, I have never been better. I never considered myself a great air talent, but when I look back, I was No. 1 in Springfield, No. 1 in Buffalo, and I’ve had two different No. 1s here – a night show and, in the book that just came out, middays. So maybe I didn’t give myself enough credit. After all these years, do we finally get to learn your real name? I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to detach from my radio name or not. We’ll see how then it goes. Ronda still calls me Justin, and I kind of like it. My real name is Scott, but I’ve never considered myself a Scott, which is weird. I’ve been Justin Case since 1990 when I joined WPKX. You know, Justin makes boots and Case makes tractors. Before that I was Max Volume, and before that I was Race Banner. What are you going to miss most about radio? The fact that it’s different every day – different challenges you get to tackle and solve. When you’re prepping for a show, there’s so much information you get to sort through in order to present what you think is (continued on page 7)

February 20, 2024 degree in early education/special education, but her unexpected radio career began after she won tickets to a Rascal Flatts concert from WJEN morning host Willie Clark, who asked her to let him know if she enjoyed the show. “We started a friendship from there, and I often would go into the station on my days off to join him live and co-host with him.” She loved the experience, especially sharing her passion for country music with listeners. That led to an offer of hosting her own weekday midday show, and one on Saturday afternoons. “I am a Pre-K teacher at a local elementary school first, and doing this radio gig for fun and enjoyment,” she says. “My radio co-workers are giving me advice and knowledge as I try to improve my skills here. Thus, my new radio job is a learning experience for me every day, but one I am so excited and grateful for.” • Haley Mason, WNGC/Athens, GA morning host: “Radio was a huge part of my life growing up,” says Mason, who also serves as Dir./Branding & Programming for Cox sister Top 40 WPUP & News/Talk WGAU. “From an early age, the radio personalities were my best friends that got to ride to school with me every morning. They weren’t celebrities, they were Haley Mason real people in my local community, and radio is the only medium where I believe that special relationship still exists. That is what initially drew me into the industry, and I love that I get to be a part of developing those relationships now.” She interned at WDUN/Gainesville, GA and worked at her college radio station, but a random social media message to her predecessor in the WNGC job, Chloe Nelson, led Mason on her career path. “I told her I was interested in radio, loved listening to her, and would love to come in and shadow her one day,” Mason recalls. “She responded, took me under her wing, and the rest is history. Once Chloe parted ways with WNGC to go to our sister station in Orlando [WWKA], I took over as the new host. To this day she is one of my best friends and biggest mentors.” • Gabe Mercer, KKWF/Seattle mornings Gabe Mercer & KMLE/Phoenix middays: Mercer attended the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, but got an internship at CBS Radio (now Audacy) during her junior year, and fell in love with music radio. “And I’ve always been a huge Rascal Flatts stan, so I credit the sweet voice of Gary LeVox for my country obsession,” she says. After starting at KMLE as an intern in 2017, she rose to Promotion Assistant, Promotion Coord., Sales Assistant, then night host before being briefly laid off during the COVID pandemic. “I fought my way back and have been with the

company ever since,” she says. “I basically didn’t take no for an answer.” She began doing middays at KMLE in early 2022, and added mornings at KKWF (where she is now based) later that year. “I frequently fly back to Phoenix for major KMLE events,” she notes, so “it’s the best of both worlds, and I’m thankful to have my feet in both markets.” Mercer applied for the CRS scholarship several times in the past, and calls earning it this year “the coolest thing that has ever happened to me.” Reach Bourne here, Mason here and Mercer here. Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on taking “Where The Wild Things Are” to No. 1. This is Combs’ 18th consecutive chart-topper, giving him sole possession of the second-longest streak of consecutive No. 1s in R&R/CA chart history (Luke Bryan holds the record with 23). Songwriters are Randy Luke Combs Montana and Dave Turnbull. As a collaborator with Riley Green on last week’s chart leader, Combs is the first artist to be part of two consecutive No. 1s since 1982, when Willie Nelson’s version of “Always On My Mind” was followed by his duet with Waylon Jennings, “Just To Satisfy You.” Beyoncé becomes the latest of more than a dozen acts this century to land on the Country charts after success on the Pop or Rock charts with the No. 50 debut of “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Some, like “Easy On Me,” Adele’s 2021 collaboration with Chris Stapleton, were singular events, while others signaled new career chapters, like Darius Rucker’s 2008 release “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” which went all the way to No. 1 and has been followed by nine additional No. 1s. The spin leader on “Texas Hold ‘Em” is KKBQ, in Beyoncé’s hometown of Houston, which gave the track 30 spins last week, accounting for more than 10% of the song’s points. “Texas Hold ‘Em” not only debuts on the Country chart this week, it also debuts on four other charts: R&B (No. 29), Top 40 (30), Hot AC (37) and Rhythmic (40). “Texas Hold ‘Em” also led the Add Board this week, with Lauren Thomas and the Columbia crew collecting 75 adds. Beyoncé is the first Pop crossover act to lead the Add Board since Hootie & The Blowfish did so with “Hold On” in Oct. 2019. Justin Case Looks Back On 34 Years (continued from page 1) valuable or relatable to the audience. That really keeps your mind sharp. And I will miss the connection to community. I got into radio because it was a way to help my community by doing fundraisers and making appearances at different events. I will miss that, although I will find something else to which I can volunteer my time. Sounds like you got into radio for the right reasons. I was always attracted to the ability to help people. I think back to Birmingham, where we retired the several-hundred-thousand dollar mortgage of a police officer who was killed in that line of duty. We were able to help families that were victims of a tornado or a fire that devastated their homes. Most recently here, we had a scout troop that had their trailer stolen, and we were able to raise some money and replace most of the goods that were inside it. Have you given any thought to what you will not miss about radio? Radio is a really selfish business because we get so much out of it. We get

to play music, go to concerts, meet and build friendships with stars. That’s really rare. So, I will miss that. But there’s also the part where you’re loyal to the job and committed to it, but that means answering a call at 2am, and you get out of bed and go to work. Or somebody is sick on Christmas. Before we had the ability to work through the internet, you would just get up and go in. Kind of like a doctor, and you might be gone for four or five hours. You’ve got people over for Thanksgiving, but you have to duck out to a charity event. Those things I won’t miss. Giving time back to my family is what I’m looking forward to. There were many times where I was absent because of something work-related. Any funny anecdotes that stand out from your radio career? I was talking to Little Big Town backstage, and I got Jimi and Phillip mixed up. I had known them for 15 or 20 years at the time. They were giggling, and I’m like, “What are you guys laughing about?” I thought they were pranking me until they actually pulled out their licenses and showed me. I was mortified. We had some great moments with Toby Keith. In Chicago there was one stunt we pulled where we got a big red, white and blue flatbed, and Toby was singing on the back of that flatbed on Michigan Ave. during rush hour on his way to an in-store. The police were going to shut it down, but it was Toby, who was such a big supporter of troops and law enforcement that we kind of got away with it for a little while. When you look back at your time in Wichita, what are some of the highlights? KFDI was a heritage radio station that was super successful before I got here, so just the opportunity to work for another set of legendary call letters. Working with [former APD/MD] Carol Hughes was tremendously satisfying. I don’t know if I’ve ever met a person who was more passionate or listened to more music than she did. I won two Edward R. Murrow Awards for helping with coverage here in Wichita, one on a tornado and one for a workplace shooting. So that’s incredibly satisfying. The way the community feels about KFDI, it’s just really special, and you don’t often see that. I’ve really enjoyed that connection. Reach Case here. –Phyllis Stark CAC
