Remembering Toby Keith

Last week’s passing of Toby Keith (Chronicle 2/5) prompted an outpouring of remembrances, some of which are collected below. Reactions posted on social media are collected on pages 9, 11 and 12. Kimbrell, agent Curt Motley, songwriter Scotty Emerick, Live Nation’s Brian O’Connell and others – in the October 2023 issue here. • WKHX/Atlanta PD Mike Moore: I enjoyed many late-night postshow conversations on Toby’s bus, watching him hold court at the Bridge Bar during CRS and the kindness he showed our listeners. I’m also struck by what a brilliant businessman he was – the first country star to open a bar/restaurant. He also invested the money he earned from songwriting to improve production for his shows to create a better experience for his fans. Plus there’s his incredible service to charity and our military. One late-night conversation we had revolved around the internet. “I would imagine as much good has come from the internet as bad,” he said. “People are stealing my music, but if you’re a parent and your child is suffering from some rare disease, now you can reach someone clear across the world that might be able to help.” Interesting perspective and way ahead of his time. RIP, Big Dawg. Sax & Keith • Promotion vet Greg Sax: In August 2005, I had just been hired by Scott Borchetta to promote Toby Keith for Big Machine and Show Dog, which hadn’t been officially announced yet. Toby was on tour in Atlanta and Scott set me up in Toby’s dressing room pre-show saying Toby probably wouldn’t even use the room, so I made myself at home. My family had bought me what I was told was a purple iPod (it was pink) loaded with my favorite songs. I got so comfortable I began to perform my own concert with the earbuds firmly in my ears and my voice cranked to 11. Without warning, Toby entered the room with his entourage. Which I realized when I opened my eyes and saw them all standing about a foot away, staring at an individual they don’t recognize who has penetrated Toby’s private dressing room. Not surprisingly, the most-played artist on Country radio Feb. 6 was Toby Keith, and no station on the panel played more of his music that day than Audacy KILT/Houston, which went all-Keith from 6am to 11am. The response of KILT and its listeners is representative of what was heard and felt across Country radio and the world of country music after Keith’s passing. APD/morning co-host Monica “Mo” Lunsford started the internal group text when she woke up to the news of Keith’s death shortly before 4am, “How should we handle this?” “We were texting back and forth, and [co-host] Erik Scott Smith said we should open up the phones and play all Toby,” says co-host George Lindsey. “After our first two breaks, the phone lines didn’t let up all morning. It was amazing – one of the most powerful audience/host experiences I’ve had since Hurricane Harvey.” “The morning show threw their entire George Lindsey planned show, including benchmarks, out with Toby the window,” says Audacy/Houston VP/

February 12, 2024 Programming Melissa Chase. “It was about honoring Toby’s life while comforting listeners and sharing beautiful personal stories.” “A guy called in and said he was on the ship that launched the first missiles into Afghanistan after 9/11 and they were blasting Toby on their speakers when they hit the launch button,” adds Lindsey. “It gave us chills.” Adding to the morning’s poignance – one of Keith’s last radio appearances came in 2022 when he showed up unannounced at a KILT concert featuring Michael Ray. The station was quick to share audio and video from the night. “He dropped by to just make a toast to the crowd,” recalls Chase. “He was having such a great time he crashed Michael’s performance of ‘Should’ve Been A Cowboy’ and made it an unforgettable, impromptu duet.” “We didn’t know what he was going through then,” laments Lindsey. “He told us he was in town to watch one of his horses race at Sam Houston Race Park. We found out later he was here for testing and treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center.” “This team was able to demonstrate the power of radio,” adds Chase. “They helped unite our community in shared sorrow while celebrating Toby’s impact.” Perhaps one of the best demonstrations of that power came with one of that morning’s first callers. “She told us she woke up and saw the news on our Instagram,” says Lindsey. “Then she said, ‘I was getting ready to switch over to Spotify to get a Toby playlist. I turned you all on and Toby was playing, and then you guys started talking about him, and I never turned it off. You were doing exactly what I wanted to hear.’” –Chris Huff

In a split second, I stopped singing, removed my earbuds while still holding my pink iPod and said, “Guess I just got fired before the job ever even started?” Toby said, “It depends. What song were you singing?” I replied, “Vern Gosdin, ‘Set ‘Em Up Joe.’” Without missing a beat Toby said, “Good choice. You’re not fired this time, but it looks like we’re gonna have to replace old B24 again.” RIP, Toby. I’m gonna miss that smile. I’m gonna miss you, my friend! • Audacy personality StyckMan: I was the assistant lighting director at the Acuff Theater when Toby played Opryland USA July 4, 1994. The house director had taken the day off and Toby didn’t have one of his own at the time, which made me “the guy.” I was going to run lights for Toby Keith! That’s a much bigger statement now than it was at the time, but I was excited. Wanting to make a good impression, I asked one of his people if Toby planned to do anything patriotic for Independence Day and was told, “nah.” The whole notion was blown off. But the theater had a giant American flag in the rafters – some 50-feet wide – that was used for the daytime show. So, when Toby played “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” to close that evening, we flew that flag ... and it was beautiful. Would have been better with a patriotic song. Can

OFF THE RECORD Stoney Creek’s Drake Milligan goes Off (The Record): Growing up in Texas, I fell in love with music listening to my mom and dad’s records of Merle Haggard, George Strait, Marty Robbins and George Jones. When I was seven, my world changed when I saw an Elvis impersonator. I went home and instantly became a fan, watching and studying his music videos – from the way he serenaded the crowds to his dance moves. Then it really clicked for me that the music wasn’t just about the songs, it was about the performance and being an entertainer … and that’s what I wanted to do. I started performing for my family on my living room coffee table, then it turned into a fullblown Elvis tribute act that lasted throughout middle DRAKE MILLIGAN school and high school. I traveled around, hitting all the Elvis-themed festivals and events. When I got the opportunity for Sun Records, I was a senior in high school. I drove up for the casting call in Memphis and found out two weeks later that I got the part. I did the show and played young Elvis, which was such a full circle moment. As far as I know, I was one of the first signed artists to be on America’s Got Talent. They had an open audition in Nashville, so I thought I’d take my shot — especially with difficulties in the pandemic of trying to find places to play and creating content on social media. It became the perfect moment to play songs from my first record and tell my story on such a large platform. I learned how to perform on a giant stage during AGT. Not only do you have a huge audience in the theater, but millions of fans watching live at home while celebrities judge your every move. It’s daunting. Like, I got to get this right or things could go south fast. But once you pull it off, it can give you a lot of confidence about doing this at a high level and holding my own with the best of them. All in all, it was a great lesson and experience that made me a stronger performer. There was a lot of work put in between the release of Dallas/Fort Worth and Jukebox Songs. I wrote most of the songs for the first record from 2018-2020. That was a way for me to find out who I was during my first few years in Nashville. I wanted to find my voice and what I wanted to convey as an artist with the kind of music I was singing. For Jukebox Songs, I pulled back the curtain a bit more and explored my artistry as a performer. I had to learn where I was being too comfortable and where I could push myself a bit more. One track from the new EP that sticks out to me is “What I Couldn’t Forget,” which I wrote with Mark Greene and Derek Barr. It has the feel of the early 2000s George Strait and Billy Currington songs I grew up on. I can’t wait to see people’s reaction. Another one I love is “Don’t Leave Me Loving You.” I heard a demo of the track and it just spoke to me. The lyrics resonated – one of those songs people can relate to with such a classic melody.

you imagine a Toby Keith show without one now? Me neither. • Promotion vet Bruce Shindler: Toby loved to goad me. When we first met, he got mixed up and called me “Larry.” It became a joke and he just always called me that. He was filming the video for “I Love This Bar” in downtown Nashville and I had some guitars I needed him to sign, so they told me to bring them to him at the shoot. The streets near the bar were closed off so cars wouldn’t drive into the shoot, but I wasn’t paying attention and

pulled up right in front of the crew. They were in the middle of filming and here I was getting out of my car and grabbing all these guitars. The director started screaming. Toby saw me and started laughing his ass off. He shouted, “Look, it’s Larry!” He made all of us at the label feel special, like we were part of his gang, and that made us work hard for him, but it wasn’t too hard to work his records. • Country Radio Hall of Famer Mike Kennedy: Toby had a way of making you feel at home and comfortable around him and, at the same time, making you laugh like crazy. I reached out to him when Kansas beat Oklahoma last fall and told him I was going to buzz down there, see him, have a beer and catch up whether he liked it or not. All he said was, “Let me know when!” I regret not following through with that. He was certainly the Keith & Kennedy only artist to call me “Mikey,” and the first person to tell me I was going into the Country Radio Hall of Fame. What he did for the industry, fans, radio and our servicemen and women will never be forgotten. One of a kind! • Tour Manager David Milam: We had been in Europe when “Red Solo Cup” exploded. When we got back, I ordered some red Solo cup costumes and went out during the song to screw with Toby. The next day he called me to the bus and said, “Where the hell did you get those from?” [then] proceeded to tell me that we came out too late in the song and he wanted us to come out earlier. When I told him we were just screwing around with him, he said, “Oh no, you boys are coming out every night now!” • BMLGR President/CEO Milam and his mother Jimmy Harnen: We were at with Keith (c) WXTU/Philadelphia promoting his DreamWorks single “When Love Fades,” which wasn’t racing up the charts. Mark Chesnutt’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” had just blown by us. While having a Philly cheesesteak at Geno’s for lunch, Toby asked me why the single was being outpaced and asked if we’d consider pulling it and moving to “How Do You Like Me Now?!” Without thinking I blurted out, “I agree. In fact , I’ve been playing that song as well as a few others on the sampler we have and radio loves it!” Toby immediately called DreamWorks president and his producer James Stroud, suggesting we flip immediately and that I agreed. Yikes. This was a highly uncommon move at the time and it wasn’t two minutes later I received a call from my SVPP Scott Borchetta who, as you can imagine, had a few choice words for my impetuous and out of line comments. Had I been in Scott’s shoes at the time I would have reacted the very same way!

• Audacy VP/Country Tim Roberts: I met Toby Keith when I was working at KDRK/Spokane. He was full of energy, and we booked him to open for Sawyer Brown at the Spokane Arena. His manager TK Kimbrell introduced us, and we instantly became friends. That was the kind of guy he was then and always – funny, charming, Keith & Roberts and one of the best songwriters ever. He loved country music and could literally sing every song ever [recorded]. It was unreal! He was a diehard Oklahoma football fan, rancher and a real cowboy. He supported America’s troops through the USO. He loved America and America loved him. Heaven gained a real cowboy, and we will all miss him. God bless and rest in peace, Toby. You Keith & Coyote were one of a kind; the real deal. • Country Radio Hall of Famer Coyote Calhoun: I first met Toby on his radio tour in 1993 [and] we started talking

about how we both were from Oklahoma. After 15 minutes of talking about music, the next hour-and-a-half all we talked about was Sooners football. Over the years we got to be good friends, and one time he said, “I’ve got a suite at OU, why don’t you come to one of the games?” Suzanne [Durham] picked me up at the airport to meet him at his house. We all got into Toby’s Hummer, and he drove us to the game. He’d stick his head out the window and security would wave him through the roadblocks. He parked on the practice field, and we walked right into the locker room. There was Coach Stoops giving his pre-game speech. When the team ran out on the field, we ran out right behind them and watched the game from the sideline. After the game was over, we went back to his house and sat around watching another game. I was thinking, “This is ridiculous, this can’t be happening to me.” I felt like I’d died and gone to heaven. I wound up going to 15 games. I’m glad to say he was my friend. • Former programmer/personality T.J.McEntire: I met Toby on the 1993 Mercury Triple Play Tour. “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” was starting to climb the charts. His music was honest and real, and he was honest and real – and oh so funny and inappropriate. And I loved him. He was my people; he was our people. He called me “Gardenia.” I thought he couldn’t remember my name. He told me, “I know your damn name, TJ.” Truly a great artist, songwriter, performer, and human being. The music and memories live on. Godspeed cowboy, you were one of a kind. Thank you. Love always, Gardenia. • Promotion vet Suzanne Durham: The first show in Boston after my dad passed away, Toby told me to invite my family out, and asked me for a picture of my dad, who was a Marine. My brother, sister-in-law, and my dad’s brother Tony all went. Every time I’d introduce my uncle Tony to someone, he’d tell them in his thick Boston accent, “This is the first concert I’ve been to in fahty years.” We watched the show from the front sound board, and when Toby went into “American Soldier,” they put my dad’s picture up on the screen. It was such a beautiful moment. I looked over and saw Uncle Tony, this big, burly guy, reach into his pocket, pull out a handkerchief and wipe his eyes. After the show we were walking out and I asked him what he thought of his first concert in 40 years. “It was worth the wait,” he said. That was all Toby. CAC
