Meet The CRS 2024 Scholars

The five professionals sharing CRS 2024’s scholarships this year are all young women rising through the ranks of radio. More significantly, they all share a passion for the medium that is both palpable and inspiring. This week, Country Aircheck profiles the Lisa McKay Women In Radio Scholarship recipients. Both are following in the footsteps of parents who worked in radio, and will be attending CRS for the first time. • Annie ”Camp” Owens, WPAW/ Greensboro mornings: Awarded one of two Lisa McKay Women in Radio Scholarships for aspiring female programmers, Owens is the daughter of the late “Big Paul” Franklin of Annie Owens WSOC/Charlotte and WTQR/Greensboro – the station his daughter now competes against. “I grew up going to the station at 4am and remotes on the weekend,” she says. “I was bit by the ‘bug,’ and knew from a very young age exactly what I wanted to do in life.” Franklin died in a motorcycle accident in 2002, but continues to inspire Owens, who says, “He left some pretty big shoes to fill. Some days I don’t know if he’s proud of me or shaking his head for following in his radio footsteps. He touched a lot of lives in the Triad, and people will still stop me randomly and tell me how much they loved my dad. His legacy still lives on.” Despite knowing she wanted to work in radio, Owens took a circuitous route. Stops included catering, housekeeping, working as the mouse at Chuck E. Cheese, attending beauty school, and working as a certified nurse’s assistant and an activities director at a retirement facility. Just before landing her radio job, she says, “I was living out of my car and working at a gas station. It took me a long time to get into broadcasting school, and by the time I did I was more than prepared.” She interned at Audacy Adult Hits sister WSMW until a part-time position came open. That led to a Promotions Dir. gig at WPAW, and then her current position on the Wake Up With The Wolf Show. “I love every aspect of being on a morning show: the creativity, the camaraderie, and especially being the first thing people hear on their morning commutes,» she says. «Hopefully we›re helping them start their days with a smile or laugh.” But as the (continued on page 3)

Q4 CDM Drivetime Leaders

Following the analysis of the format’s Q4 drive-time leaders in PPM markets earlier this month, Country Aircheck has also compiled Country’s top performers from Nielsen’s 45 Continuous Diary Measurement (CDM) markets. For the first time in more than two years, WDRM/Huntsville’s morning duo of “Dingo” Brent Crank and Blair Maples top the daypart. They jumped 2.6 shares from Q3, when they ranked eighth. WRNS/Greenville, NC, which tied for first overall in the quarter, landed just behind WDRM in morning drive, scoring an even 12 share with its airing of The Bobby Bones Show. Alabama makes it two out of the top three, with WZZK/Birmingham’s Rick & Bubba taking the bronze. In afternoon drive, WRNS takes the top spot with Mica Cadena returning to the pole position for the first time since Q4 2022. Fourth tenths

Congratulations to Chris Stapleton, Damon Moberly, Miranda McDonald and the Mercury promotion team on taking “White Horse” to No. 1. It is his fourth chart-topper. Songwriters are Dan Wilson and Stapelton. Despite its place in American iconography, this is only the third No. 1 in R&R/ MB/CA chart history to feature “horse” in the title, Chris Stapleton following Toby Keith’s “Beer For My Horses” in 2003 and Taylor Swift’s other “White Horse” in 2009. Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA crew on scoring 36 adds for Restless Road’s “Last Rodeo.” Two first-time chart appearances warrant congratulations this week: Drew Baldridge enters this week’s chart at No. 49 with “She’s Somebody’s Daughter,” the chart debut for his Lyric Ridge imprint. Just below him, American Idol Season 20 runner-up HunterGirl makes her chart debut with “Ain’t About You.”

scholarship suggests, she aspires to a programming career that also includes on-air work, just like her father. “There’s nothing more I’d like to see than a ton of female programmers and more females in this industry living out their dreams,” Owens says. “I want to curate stations, and mold the minds of the next generation of broadcasters and programmers. I’m here to kick down the door!” At CRS, she’s most looking forward to “networking with other professionals who are passionate about radio. I plan to soak up every moment and take all the notes I can. As someone who’s only every heard about CRS, I’m just grateful to finally experience it for myself.” • Emily Harlan, KBAY/San Jose middays: The other Lisa McKay Scholarship recipient echoes Owens. “Radio has always been in my blood,” she says. Her parents both worked for WTHI/Terre Haute, IN, “spinning the vinyl hits of the ‘60s and ‘70s.” Her father, J Harlan, worked during the day and her mother, Donna Lynn, at Emily Harlan night. sports reporter. “I had no idea I’d be working in radio someday, so it’s funny that it’s come full circle. My parents came into my studio recently and were floored at how radio functions now – how digital it’s become. They are used to dropping the needle.” Harlan has been in broadcasting for more than 12 years, but says she “didn’t get into radio in the traditional way.” After a stint at Fox Sports San Diego, she began working as an arena announcer for the San Jose Sharks (a job she still has). Heard in that role by Alpha executives in 2022, she was offered a job at their then-fledgling KBAY. “I am so thankful they did, because I absolutely love working in radio,” she says. “Mainly, I love being able to connect with our listeners. This is a job where we have the potential to make a positive impact in someone’s life every single day, and that is such an honor.” A highlight for Harlan is hosting and curating the hourlong “She’s Country” feature, spotlighting female artists every Wednesday during her show. “This is the thing I am most proud of so far in my radio career,” she says. “We received a message from a listener saying that she wanted to hear more women on Country radio, so we decided to do something about

it. I hope every woman who listens to it feels empowered.” Curating “She’s Country” created an interest in programming for Harlan, who says, “Being able to be a successful woman in the industry, programming my own show and feeling confident in that is something I want to achieve. I would love to learn and grow in that space and to be able to do it on a larger scale someday.” Harlan says the legacy of the late programmer Lisa McKay sparked her interest in applying for her namesake scholarship. “I was never able to meet her, but from what I’ve read, she was a champion for women and a mentor for many in the industry. That is something I aspire to be and hope I am now in any way I can be. It’s an honor to represent her legacy and continue to push the industry forward.” At CRS, she hopes to learn “how to be a better ally to my friends in the industry and a better host and programmer for the listeners of Bay Country. Holiday 2023 PPM Scoreboard The Nielsen PPM Holiday 2023 Survey (12/7/23-1/3/24) saw Country take it on the chin thanks to the annual Christmas music surge of AC stations, with 78% of Country stations either flat or down in share from December. Total Country shares declined 12.2% to 306.5 on a same-station basis, the fourth-lowest figure in the PPM era. The year-to-year decline was only 0.6%. WCOL/Columbus had the largest share in the format with a 7.7, the lowest formatleading share since Nov. 2021 and the second6+ SHARE (RANK)
