Remembering Bill Mayne

Colleagues and friends share memories of the late radio, label and CRB executive Bill Mayne: • Apple Music’s Charlie Morgan: One that keeps coming up are our “commutes.” When Bill was CRB Exec. Dir. and I was board president, I lived in Indianapolis where I had a 45 minute commute every day. Bill somehow had a sixth sense (or a hidden camera) and no matter what time I headed home, within three blocks of leaving the parking garage, my phone would ring and it would be Bill. For the next 40-plus minutes, we’d catch up. Sometimes it was a crazy idea Bill had that he was excited to share. Sometimes it was me calming Bill Mayne him down about something or someone who had frustrated him that day. And often it was just friends talking. We would switch to “Willis and Brian” mode (our legal names) and talk about life. Those were the best. I miss “carpooling” with Bill and I really miss Willis. • CRB’s Ashley Bourque: Some of my favorite times with Bill involve him stomping into my office, laying on the couch with his feet up in the air and telling wild stories about his years in the industry. It was like listening to a book of Music Row fables brought to life. He was larger than life, and will always be remembered that way. Thank you for everything, Bill Mayne. You are loved. • Audacy’s Tim Roberts: My former afternoon host and Radio Hall of Famer Chuck Edwards (of Edwards & Lee) used to work for Bill at KSCS/ Dallas back in the day as a night DJ. Chuck was a notorious prankster [and] I knew they had a pretty contentious relationship. So when Bill was working a record and visiting, we pretended I had gotten fired and, moreover, Bill was the new WYCD/Detroit PD. My VP/GM Debbie Kenyon was in on the plot. I was hiding in a nearby office and heard, “Hey, Big Boy. I’m back in the game!” Debbie played along perfectly. Chuck totally bought it and, when they finally told him it was a punk, Chuck lost his mind, cussed and swore to never pull any pranks ever again. We were laughing hysterically. Bill was one-of-a-kind. RIP, my friend. • CRB’s Brooke Sanders: Bill took a chance on me and I am forever grateful. I’ll miss the tales of his days as “Wild Bill Mayne” on the radio. I’ll miss his notorious ability to nickname (continued on page 6)

Denny’s Indy-pendence Day Next Friday (12/15), Jim Denny will crack the mic at WFMS/ Indianapolis for the last time, concluding a 35-year run with the station that’s earned him four CMAs, three ACMs and a 2014 induction into the Country Radio Hall of Fame. Country Aircheck recently asked him about the highs, the lows and what’s next. CA: Staying that long at one station is extremely rare. What’s your secret? JD: A lot of times people want to force a morning show together, [but] I don’t think it works like that. You need to be friends before you try to do a show. You must Jim Denny have chemistry; people can see right through fakeness.

What have been the biggest highlights for you? In terms of being in awe, I had a chance to go to three Olympics, and getting to travel and see those different cultures was just grand. Of course, ACM and CMA awards are amazing, and meeting and getting to know the artists. This sounds hokey as hell, but the thing that really hit me the most when I announced my retirement were all the messages from folks who said they were crying along with me. You don’t realize when you’re sitting in a room with a microphone that you’re talking to all these people, and they count on you. That’s my biggest reward. You mentioned the artists, do any stand out for you? Yes, his name is Garth Brooks. I first interviewed him in the early ‘90s and told him we both have daughters named Taylor. The next time I saw him, he asked, “How’s your daughter Taylor?” How he remembered that I don’t know. I’ve always loved that about him. Any embarrassing moments? We were doing artist interviews at the ACMs in Las Vegas one year. It’s so quick with each artist, you’re doing it all day and sometimes you’re not sure who a new artist is, so you’re also trying to look up their information. This guy sat down in front of me, and I could not think of his name to save my life. I said, “Everybody knows who this guy is – Blake Shelton.” It was Luke Bryan. God love him, he knew I was having a brain fade. I was so embarrassed, but I did learn to write down everyone’s names before every interview. Any regrets? Professionally, no. Before I came to WFMS, I had an opportunity to go to Miami, but there was nothing better than home sweet home. There was a comfort level, I knew the people here and I was going to be on a team that wins. Personally, when I first started, my daughter was born in Denver. I thought I could work here and then fly out for her birth, but I missed it by about two hours. Otherwise, I don’t have any regrets. What are you looking forward to in retirement? Sleeping in. Seriously, I’m going to miss everything about my job except

for meetings and getting up at 3am. Last week I went to a Colts game with my son. Usually we’d have to leave in the fourth quarter because I’d have to work the next day, but I took Monday off and we got to stay the entire game. Then I got home and watched a movie with my wife. I thought, “Is this what people do on Sunday nights?” Oh, and I’ve been invited to be a guest host on the Grand Ole Opry in January, I’m getting goosebumps thinking about that. How are co-hosts Deborah Honeycutt and Kevin Freeman going to adjust? I don’t know who they’re going to pick on without me. They’re going to be fine. It’s not like I’m dying. We’ll still get together for lunches, and I may

December 15 is going to be one emotional day, though. How did you know it was time to hang up the headphones? As much as I love doing the show, I’m just ready to catch up with old friends, play some golf and play guitar again. God puts you on a path and the best thing to do is just get on it and He’ll lead in you in the right direction. The hardest part is turning that page over to the next chapter because you don’t know what’s there. It’s a heavy page to turn, but I think I’m going to be very pleased. just the second to do so in one calendar year. Wynonna Judd’s first three solo singles all went to the top in 1992. Wilson also makes history with this No. 1, becoming the first female artist to reach the top four times in one calendar year, thanks also to her two solo No. 1s and No. 1 collaboration with Hardy. Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group and Warner Music jointly established the Music Industry Climate Collective (MICC) to address challenges and changes in global climate, and named trade organization American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) as an advisor to the group. MICC’s first initiative to address music’s environmental impact will be the deployment of guidance for measuring the

anyone on the spot [like] when he decided I was “Bonnaroo Brooke” after attending the festival my first year on the job. He will be well-remembered and missed forever. • Amazon Music’s Michelle Tigard Kammerer: Bill Mayne was a brilliant businessman, excellent mentor, benevolent leader and dear friend. What a lot of people don’t know is he was also a master meat smoker. He had his smoked ribs down to a science, from the specific mix of woods he used to make the smoke to the overnight 18-hour cooking rotation process – the best ribs I’ve ever had in my entire life! A few years back, he brought ribs into the CRB offices to share with staff, and I brought leftovers home to my Rib It: Mayne with MTK. visiting in-laws, who would not stop raving about them. I told Bill their reaction and he was so tickled, he said he’d make them some more that night. Unfortunately, they had traveled home earlier that day. A year later, I was no longer working at CRB, but we kept in touch and when he asked about my weekend plans during one of our calls, I mentioned my in-laws were coming to visit. The next morning I received a surprise call: “Bill’s rib shack here! I have an order for Chelle’s in-laws ready for pick up.” I was blown away. Not only had he remembered their love of his smoked ribs, but he had stayed up all night to make a batch especially for them. Bill had a heart of gold. We are all better for having known him. • CRB’s RJ Curtis: I met Bill in 1983 at KZLA. He was an imposing man with a big voice and his mere presence took up most of any room he occupied – a true force of nature. Everyone knew him and those who didn’t, wanted to. I was stunned when

he left WBAP/KSCS to join Warner Bros. I always thought of Bill Mayne as a career radio person. His skills and intelligence allowed him to go well beyond that, but his foundation was radio and that identity never left him. • CRB’s Chasity Crouch: Bill was a great storyteller ... A lot of great conversation and teachable moments happened in [the CRB] office. Since his retirement and his decline in health, he still found the time to call. Usually it would be about something he had seen on TV that reminded him of me or my family. You will be missed, friend ... love you, too. Many prayers for the Mayne family. • EmCo’s Jack Purcell: Bill and I actually got off to a bit of a rocky start when we first began working together at Warner Bros. in the late ‘80s [but] over the course of 15 years we found a wonderful pace and balance. One story he loved to tell was when his son, Christopher, discovered me shirtless one hot summer in my office slamming Mountain Dews. The building’s AC had gone out. He ran back down the hall and said, “Dad, Jack is naked!” Our proudest moment came when we began taking artists down to Memphis Bunny Buddies: A Warner Bros. reunion with (l-r) to support St. Jack Purcell, Martha Sharp, Randy Travis, Jean Jude. Outside Williams, Rick Moxley, George Briner and Mayne of Randy Owen and RCA, we were one of the first labels to become involved. Faith Hill, Holly Dunn and Little Texas were among the first. His contributions on behalf of radio, record labels, St. Jude, ACMs, CRB and countless other endeavors rank him as one of the industry’s most impactful executives. I’ve lost a friend, brother and father figure who truly believed in me. Godspeed. • Retired promotion vet Sam Harrell: In the ‘70s I was promoting all formats for CBS Records. Bill was working at a Rock station in Austin and I took him to lunch. We had a very nice and attractive waitress and Bill seemed to be interested, so I told him to go introduce himself. He was too shy so I excused myself, introduced myself to her and told her Bill would like to meet her. Well, she came over and the rest is history. Her name is Sallie and they got married sometime after. I’m proud to say I introduced Bill to his future wife and they made a great pair. Bill, you were one of the good guys and are sorely missed. God bless. • BMG/BBRMG’s Jon Loba: The examples of people he gave a first shot to are numerous. Allowing Rick Baumgartner and Jack Purcell to hire me as a promotion coordinator with zero professional or educational experience. Hiring Todd Cassetty – who had an MBA, but no promotion experience – as a regional. Recruiting [Amazon Music’s] Ryan Redington for the CRB board and then convincing the board that an organization built around and for radio would benefit by adding someone from streaming. Making time to meet with and give guidance to countless interns and others wanting to get in the business. Bill’s greatest professional pleasure was not the No. 1s, platinum records or hitting budget. It was seeing the growth and success of others – especially those he gave a chance to and mentored. He changed and improved so many lives because of that spirit, and his memory will live on for decades because of it. That is his real legacy. • Townsquare’s Kurt Johnson: Bill Mayne saved CRS. When he took over as Exec. Dir. in 2009, Music Row had all but left CRS for dead. He went up and down 16th Ave., hat in hand, and got the labels and artists to commit. They did, and Bill ran with the ball, taking the event into some of its best years in history. That’s how big a force he was. One other thing: If Bill really liked you, he renamed you. I was “El Presidente.” Chuck Aly became “The All-Knowing Oracle.” Charlie Morgan: “Brian.” RJ Curtis was “The Designated R.” I called him “Jefe,” or just “Hef.” You knew where Bill stood. On everything. I loved him and am very fortunate to have called him partner and friend. • CRB’s Sheree Latham: You knew you “were in” with Bill if he gave you a nickname ... Mine was “Sh-boom.” In my now 24 years at CRS, he was my longest tenured executive director [and] has surely left his mark on me, the staff, the CRB board and all he came in contact with over his 50year career span. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF WGNA/ALBANY On December 5, 1973, WGNA signed on and brought Country music to the FM dial in New York’s capital for the first time. The station was not an immediate success, and it wasn’t until Country competitor WOKO-AM left the format in 1978 that its ratings started to climb. Slow growth followed in the ‘80s, and in 1989, WGNA topped the market for the first time. Since then, WGNA has become one of the most successful Country stations in the Northeast and has led the market in 121 books including the most recent October 2023 survey.

The November 2023 PPM Book (10/1211/8) saw Country total shares inch up 0.7%, from 363.4 in October to 365.8 on a samestation basis. Year-to-year shares are up 5.0%. WCTK/Providence had the largest share in the format with a 9.5. Total cume was off 1.1% from last month at 23.4 million, and down 3.6% from last November; in fact, this is the lowest total
