Inside The 57th CMA Awards

Exec. Producer Robert Deaton tells the stories behind the Nov. 8 57th CMA Awards. Congrats on another well-received show, and on winning the night. First thing I noticed was the new set; how did that come together? This is my 17th year and I’ve never said this before, but I thought it was the best looking show we’ve ever done. From set design to broadcast design to screen content, I was so proud of the whole team. Our Art Director, Alana Billingsley, loves this show and had worked under other set designers, but had never been handed the reigns to do the whole Robert Deaton thing. I wanted her to do it and I was really glad she wanted to as well. We wanted to change up the look of what is, first of all, the Oscars of country music. A lot of people are going to LED screens in sets, which is fine and looks good, but I wanted a real, honest-to-goodness architectural design where any screens were meant to support the architecture. The other big note for me is for years I’ve wanted to get rid of the center awards presentation area so we could have bigger performance stages. Just like when you make a record, negative space creates drama. Alana and I talked about that, which is how we came up with putting the presenter area far stage right. That gave us two stages that were so much bigger in scale. You’ve been quoted about second-year growth between hosts Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning. Are there any illustrative examples you can share? Whether you’re an athlete, a standup comedian, a musician or artist, the first time you do the CMA Awards, it’s a different thing. There’s a little bit of a deer-in-the-headlights moment. Q3 CDM Drivetime Leaders

Following last month’s analysis of the format’s Q3 drive-time leaders in PPM markets, Country Aircheck has also compiled Country’s top performers from Nielsen’s 45 Continuous Diary Measurement (CDM) markets. While WUSY/Chattanooga was the leader in share for the total week, it did not claim the top spot in morning drive. For the first time since taking over mornings in July and October 2022, respectively, WIVK/Knoxville’s Joey Tack & Nancy Barger have the largest share in morning drive with a 12.4, nearly two shares above second place WKKO/Toledo’s Lyn Casye & Marco Nation. WUSY captured the bronze with Ken Hicks & Daniel Wyatt’s even 10 share. It’s been a big year for WUSY’s Melissa “Mo” Wagner & Greg “Styckman” Owens. They just took home the CMA Medium Market Personality of the Year trophy, they’re now hosting overnights across most Audacy stations (CAW 10/23) and they have the largest share in afternoon drive for the first time since Q2 2022. Mo & Styckman’s 12.5 is a full share ahead of WIVK’s Gunner, who slips from last quarter’s first place

McGraw’s 33rd No. 1 on the R&R/MB/CA charts, moving him into a tie for third-most with Kenny Chesney. It also extends McGraw’s record of the most weeks at No. 1 for any artist to 74. Additionally, McGraw sets a new record for longest span between first and latest No. 1s, with 29 years and six months having elapsed since he first topped the chart with “Don’t Take The Girl” in May 1994. The record previously belonged to George Strait’s 28-year, nine month span from 1984’s “Let’s Fall To Pieces Together” to 2013’s “Give It All We Got Tonight.” McGraw’s jump from No. 5 to No. 1 was fueled by an increase of 9,092 points, which shatters the previous monitored-era record of a 6,872-point jump to No. 1 by McGraw’s “I Called Mama” in October 2020. In fact, three of the five largest one week point jumps to No. 1 were recorded by McGraw songs. Similarly, the 2,411 increase in spins this week breaks the previous record of 2,296, also held by “I Called Mama.” Kudos to Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team on scoring 61 adds for Justin Moore’s “This Is My Dirt.” The song enters this week’s chart at No. 39, marking Moore’s highest debut, edging out the No. 40 debut “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” made in 2011. Additionally, WIBW/Topeka is temporarily removed from this week’s Activator chart, while KSNI/Santa Maria, CA also remains off the panel, both due to ongoing technical issues.

And especially for someone like Peyton, who came in feeling like an outsider, even though everyone embraced him. This year they were both more relaxed. We also learned how to write for Peyton. What I realized is his delivery can make things funny that might not look all that funny on paper. They were spot-on all night long with a perfect cadence – just having fun playing off of each other. After the opening monologue, I’m like, “Guys, it’s going to be a night. Y’all are on a roll.” Luke Bryan and There are always questions Peyton Manning about who gets performances, who gets multiple performances and who is conspicuously absent. If a top artist isn’t present or performing, it doesn’t mean they weren’t invited, right? “I can’t believe y’all didn’t ask Carrie Underwood.” We ask every year! Fans sometimes don’t understand artists being in and out of cycle. We had superstars this year who said they’d love to do it, but they didn’t have anything that fit for the show. Some have conflicts and can’t make it. It’s a moving thing you have to attack every day. That said, this show was about 80% of what I envisioned when the nominations came out. The other 20% is a lot of maneuvering and, when you get down to the last 5%, what completes the arc of the show. I’m very transparent with the artist managers that the DNA of this show is about highlighting what’s happening in the moment while also honoring the past. Having Bill Anderson onstage – the longest running Opry member – was as important to me as any performance. Having Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie McCoy playing harmonica on “Delta Dawn” ... I mean, this guy invented the Nashville Number system. He played on the original recording, too. Most fans at home won’t notice those things, but they’re what make us who we are. The audience, the musicians and the artists in that front row know what’s happening. And they see how important it is to us to get every detail right. We are not just about the rating. A CMA board member told me this week you are one of only two people in history with sole dominion over a live Bill Anderson television broadcast, along with the late ABC executive Roone Arledge. How much pressure is that, and how do you make sure you’re not missing anything? Everyone has blind spots, right? That’s a good question. I guess it’s just a day-by-day thing. What does the show need? And it’s also trying to be aware of the timing of everything and keeping my eyes open throughout the year. Morgan Wallen and Lainey Wilson are no-brainers. But seeing a press release about Mr. Anderson becoming the longest serving Opry member or, last year, when Jeannie Seeley set the record for the most appearances ever – I screen shot those things. Another advantage I have is I don’t have to look up who played on “Delta Dawn.” I know that. I don’t have to look up the arrangement for Joe Diffie’s “Pickup Man” – I did the music video. My dad had a weekly country music television show in Wilmington, NC, so I remember the first time I met Jerry Lee Lewis and Buck Owens. The Opry sent out a yearbook where I’d read about the Four Guys, Connie Smith and Ernest Tubb. For the 50th, I tried to find Bobbie Gentry, who does not want to be found, by the way. I love this music and can’t remember a time growing up that I didn’t want to move to Nashville. What I’m trying to do is keep the circle from being unbroken. Like all nominees, can we assume Tracy Chapman was invited?

Absolutely. I would have let her sing the encyclopedia, too. And doing a Tanya Tucker moment was not exclusionary to Patty Loveless? No. When you’re a performer, there are offsite and on-site rehearsals; you can’t just come in and out for one night. She said, “Please ask me again and I promise I will perform next time.” The other thing that gets criticized is song selection. “Why didn’t you do this song?” Well, that’s been done two other times and you have to do a different show which, by the way, is also respecting those other shows. RAC Clark produced the ACMs for years and people thought we were enemies, but we’re good friends. We’d pick up the phone and talk about what we were planning to make sure we didn’t step on each other’s toes. If it’s a country show, I want it to be successful. This is bigger than just us, it’s about Nashville and our artists. Speaking of, which performances have interesting stories behind them? People ask why Lainey didn’t do “Watermelon Moonshine,” but she’d done it so many times on television already. We had a whole other Lainey Wilson performance we’d worked on for three weeks, but I told my creative team it just wasn’t there. I called Lainey and told her we were scrapping the whole thing and starting over. That weekend, my right hand person Briana Tripp and I created the moment you ended up seeing. Chris Stapleton was funny. We were onstage during rehearsal for the performance with Carly Pearce and he starts laughing, “Robert, you’re seeing a first. I didn’t ever think I’d do a performance without a guitar.” And doing a tribute to Jimmy Buffett meant having Kenny Chesney on the show for the first time in something like nine years. And Alan Jackson being onstage was a win, despite the circumstance. What else? Kenny Chesney We have great support from CMA CEO Sarah Trahern, who I’m so locked with. She said to me at rehearsal, “I think we need to move the goodnights to before the final Jelly Roll and K. Michelle performance.” I had just thought that when she said it, but hadn’t verbalized it yet. Likewise, our network partners, Rob Mills and Scott Igoe at ABC. They love this music and this show so much. I was a minute and 50 seconds over as the show as winding down, which would normally mean running crash credits. I told Rob, but he said, “No, Alan Jackson this is a beautiful show and a great night for country music. All these people who worked on this show should get their credit.” So we ran the long credits.
