Radio & Records: Family Tradition Pt. 2
Spotlighting family members working in the country music industry continues with Jim and Liz Mantel and Tim and Kelcie Roberts. • WLKK/Buffalo morning host Liz Mantel and father/Country Radio Hall of Famer Jim Mantel: LM: I was always tagging along to events, remotes, concerts, I loved it! My sister never really did — she just wasn’t interested — but I am so much like my dad and would thrive on making people laugh. There was always a built-in audience around him. I can’t pinpoint a moment when I realized what my dad did for a living, because we didn’t know anything different. I don’t think in our young ages it ever occurred to us that everyone’s dad wasn’t on the radio. JM: The first time I had a feeling Liz would be good at radio was my wife’s 40th birthday. She loves cows, so I hired a 4H girl to bring a cow and calf over at about 5am as a surprise. They got loose and the whole neighborhood was running around trying to catch them. I had Liz on the phone doing play-by-play and remember being impressed with how well she did painting a really good picture. LM: When we lived in Corpus Christi, my dad was buried alive. For some reason, they thought it would be a good idea to Reality Bites: Liz and Jim Mantel ready to have his children there sink their teeth into their next adventure. as they dug him out (continued on page 5)
