Exec. Producer RAC Clark takes Country Aircheck inside the 55th ACM Awards: Were you prepared for the Entertainer tie? I had a clue it was a tie. I didn’t know if both artists would be there, but I certainly wanted them to be and made sure we went into the last act right on time.[Ed. Note: Because of the need for COVID testing, ACM CEO Damon Whiteside notified managers of winning artists in advance so they could be on site live.] I always have filler if we’re short – long goodnights and short goodnights. [CBS executive] Jack Sussman told me if we need to go long in an emotional moment, that’s okay. For instance, when Old Dominion accepted RAC Clark and talked about feeling the presence of everyone who isn’t here anymore, Jack and I gave each other a look. That’s what acceptance speeches need to be. Not the laundry list of your agent, manager and publicist. I knew CBS would stay with the Entertainer presentation if it came to it. Despite dominating the night, ratings and viewers were down substantially. What is the network saying? Nothing yet. We haven’t had that debrief. The Emmys had about the same rating in the demo but fewer viewers than we had. Everything is down. The television industry is in the same place the recording industry was in when streaming came in. There’s Hulu, Peacock, Netflix, Disney+ – broadcast networks are feeling the effects. And I heard that DishTV with its 12 million viewers wasn’t carrying CBS the night of our show. Even so, in a year when people are craving entertainment beyond seeing stars in their homes, we delivered a show people responded to on socials and in the music streaming numbers we saw after. We made an impact. How did this Nashville concept come together? It started with this crazy idea of three venues. When the decision was made to move to Nashville, what we (continued on page 9)

Self-Care Tips: Anxiety Prime

The hopefulness that summer’s rise in temperature would slow the spread of COVID-19 has faded as yet another holiday weekend is in the rearview and the road ahead is as uncertain as ever. Many in the music industry are still working from home, the novelty of the short-turned-long-term solution wearing off and being replaced with feelings of isolation, anxiety and stress. “We often don’t think of mental health checks until we are already in a crisis or we’re at a deficit in our mental health,” explains Adcox. “That’s usually when it becomes obvious enough that we would check in on ourselves or other people would check in on us.” Adcox alternately advises proactivity through self-inventory. Action Planning: One exercise he recommends involves drawing a line down a piece of paper. On one side, rate your stress on a one-to10 scale, one representing not feeling much stress at all and 10 meaning your anxiety is through the roof. Similarly, rate your hope on the other side, ranging from feeling grounded and whole to hopeless. If you find yourself between three and six on either side, Adcox says “Welcome to being a human being right now.” He suggests finding “one safe person that you can check in with about where you are on that scale.” People in the seven-to-10 range should consider talking to a professional in the mental health space. “If you’re feeling a sense of despair, hopelessness and acute or high levels of stress, which can manifest through depression, anxiety and other lenses, then you ought to seek out some counseling and/or professional support,” Adcox urges. According to Adcox, there are two things the human brain fears the most: an unpredictable future and being/feeling isolated. With buses parked and venue doors closed, the industry received what he calls a “double whammy.” More isolation, less control. He says the goal is not to try to outrun or immediately solve those problems, but to “get somewhat comfortable with owning it, understanding it and discovering how you can mitigate it.” Emotional fitness, which he describes as “your feelings towards yourself and other people,” requires the same level of ongoing maintenance as physical fitness. Adcox suggests starting the day with a gratitude list, finding at least one or two people that you can check in with daily on how you’re feeling (“a feelings check”) and showing yourself grace. He elaborates, “Recognize we’re in the middle of doing things that we never thought we could do under circumstances that we never thought we’d be doing them under.” Getting Physical: Another activity Adcox advocates is an “emotional body scan.” This is a quick way to take inventory of emotional health in real time. Start by asking yourself, “What am I feeling?” Don’t overthink it: sadness, shame, fear, anger, anxiety. Then, “Where am I feeling it?” Drill down on where that emotion is in your body. He warns that step for first-timers may feel awkward. “We typically hold emotions in our body. Identifying where they are can help lower and release the energy and power that they hold.”

The third one is, “How big is it?” “This goes back to the scales I was talking about earlier,” explains Adcox. “Give your emotion a number on a scale based on how big or small it feels. This exercise alone helps you get clarity.” He points to a “significant amount of science” supporting the notion that when you know it, own it, share it and have an appropriate, safe place to offload it, ambient stress can be lowered. “It gets our feet on the ground and helps us navigate circumstances in a more self-aware and informed way,” Adcox concludes. WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of The Cadillac Three’s Neil Mason: I’ve been home a lot more than I was in the past 15 years. My routine is waking up early with our new baby, Louella, getting some work done, writing a song on Zoom, more work, hanging out with Louella, more work, then sleeping … all while never really leaving the house. My wife, Chelsea, Louella and I are all living together. We’ve been so busy figuring out how to be parents that we haven’t had time to drive each other crazy. I’ve just been learning how to be a dad and fixing up the house. I’ve been writing as much or more than I was before, but exclusively doing it over Zoom, which really hasn’t been too bad. It took a minute to get used to, but it’s been one of the few things that have stayed consistent this year. I’m very grateful for songwriting. We launched our own livestream series from The Basement in Nashville called Country Fuzz Presents, which has featured not only full band livestream shows from TC3 but from lots of other artists in town: Drake White, A Thousand Horses, The Wild Feathers, Jillian Jacqueline,

Lauren Jenkins, Hey Steve, Austin Jenckes, Ray Fulcher, etc. It’s been a great way to feel connected to fans and the music community by creating an outlet for high quality live shows in a time where that is such a hard thing for so many of us because we can’t tour. We are also working in the community with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee to provide 100,000 meals over 100 days. It’s been awesome to see the support of not only the artists in Nashville but also the fans — how they have chipped in to help us reach that goal. [Editor’s Note: Donate here.] I’ve been bingeing the NBA Playoffs and eating dry roasted peanuts from Costco. So. Good. The silver lining is being able to be home with our baby in her first year. TC3 was supposed to be very busy touring in 2020 around our Country Fuzz record, which came out in February, but instead we have been home. So, if there is one silver lining to all that this year has brought, it’s been the time to be home with our families.

didn’t want was to be in an empty Bridgestone Arena. Looking back, that was serendipitous in allowing us to spread the load of personnel across the three. We were able to effectively minimize population density. DCP’s Linda Gierahn was tireless in working with our safety protocol folks, Metro Davidson County, ACM – getting approvals from the unions and guilds – and putting it all into their own corporate overlay. I got tested seven times in 10 days. From everything I heard, everyone involved felt safe. Can you walk me through how that worked backstage and Miranda onstage? Lambert There were no dressing rooms; every artist was in a separate bus in the parking lot. Co-Producer Patrick Menton and his team made sure they were transported to the artist entry where one-way pipe-and-drape pathways got them to and from the stage completely isolated from other artists, staff or crew. The stage was Zone A – as mandated by the unions and guilds – where only essential personnel wearing masks and face shields could interact closely with the talent. Getting equipment onstage involved individual pods of crew members who were responsible for a band’s equipment. One group had Carrie Underwood’s gear. Another had Eric Church’s. They were all gloved and masked, with no chance of any other people touching that gear. After the equipment was set up onstage, it was sanitized. How did having three venues affect the creative process? When we booked the Bluebird Café, I couldn’t resist having Miranda Lambert there and suggested inviting Luke Dick and Natalie Hemby since it’s a songwriter venue. She was up for it. At one point we had Kane Brown slotted for the Bluebird, but as it developed, we began to see the song with a chorale in the Opry House balcony. Moving that created an opportunity at the Bluebird for Jimmie Allen. Co-Exec. Producer Raj Kapoor created a lot of different looks like utilizing the Glow Motion wristbands in the seats to give the effect of people in the pews or twinkling fireflies. The quiet at the end of the In Memoriam segment was perfect. How did that come together?

We started with the idea of individual performances honoring Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels and Joe Diffie, then I said, folks, I think this is a mistake. We’ve lost so many people. Why not Jimmy Capps, considering we’re at the Opry House? That’s when I turned to the folks at the Academy and said, you’ve got to curate this list. We talked to Garth about “The Dance,” and he responded, “Listen to Trisha’s song.” Of course, it was so appropriate. Plus, I knew she could do the setup from a hosting perspective. It looked so great and we didn’t want to just drop in a package at the end. [Director] Glenn Weiss was saying he wanted to go slow. We had a bumper for a sponsor, but we moved that away and it ended beautifully. How were ACM’s diversity and inclusion efforts manifested onstage and behind the scenes? Having been interim CEO when the ACM was forming the D&I taskforce, I know how important it is to the Academy. From Keith [Urban]’s opening monologue to Kane’s song, Mickey Guyton and Jimmie’s performances, asking CeCe Winans to present Female – which also crossed genres and brought a greater sense of being in Nashville – having diversity out front was key. Being in Music City, highlighting the opening of the National Museum of African American Music with NMAAM board member Darius Rucker was important. We also had Amberia Allen writing for Keith after having great success working with her on Our Country. Any performances have a compelling backstory? Eric Church sent me a work tape in July – strumming and reciting “Ragged Old Flag” into “Stick That In Your Country Song.” As we got into it, we found the Cash estate and publishers are very protective. No matter how much talking I did trying to get it

cleared, it was a corporate wall. I called Eric’s manager John Peets and said, “I need Eric to write a letter to John and Rosanne Cash explaining what he wants to do.” I’m never going to share that letter, but it’s the reason that performance aired. His passion about what he wanted to say and why allowed them to entrust him with their father’s legacy. We found a recitation Johnny did without instrumentation for a Ralph Emery special. We were able to clean that up so Eric could put his own acoustic playing behind it. We worked directly with the Cash estate for approval on those images of him. I called Jon Loba, because the publishing for “Ragged” is controlled by BMG, and asked him to help us out. There was a lot of sweat equity by a lot of people. WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of recently named Alpha KIAI/Mason City, IA PD/ morning host (CAT 8/24) Britt Pearson: Quarantine put a halt to my daily fluffy coffee purchase, going out to eat and traveling. And not driving 50 miles to and from work five days a week and within a fivestate area for concerts or rodeos had my Jeep living a sedentary life, too! While working from home, I was typically up at 5am and have coffee immediately before I log on and go on-air for the morning show. I also used to handle middays until 3pm. Afterward, I would go for an afternoon walk, then come back to jump on Zoom meetings for my side-hustle of web design and small business consulting. I typically have someone living here with me, but they’ve gone to help their family, so thankfully the possibility of driving someone else insane has been limited. Except for maybe my dog, Tana. I worked from home for about eight weeks, but I’m back in the studio now. Currently, everyone is in their respective offices, but we still do Zoom meetings and keep social distancing. Some of my new quarantine hobbies included hiking, growing flowers and veggies, designing websites and doing video editing and production. Quarantine allowed me to become more creative, because I had to think differently. Considering how people were living and working at home as well as

thinking about how all essential workers were handling their lifestyles forced me to make my content relatable to those groups. Events we typically did in person had to transition to Facebook Live, and artists that were doing radio tours are now coming to our office and our community virtually via weekly live streams. Going live online has made all the difference in the world! The studio radio world needed a technology update – just like our phones do – and even though we all hate change at first, it was great to realize all the cool stuff we could do by embracing a new platform. I totally dig new tech stuff and all the ways we can utilize what’s available to connect more to listeners and stay connected to musicians. There’s more of a “real world” experience when you can talk one-on-one with people without having to travel. Is it hard to switch your thinking? Sure. But, it’s cool to see people still connecting. I hopped on the bandwagon and did the Tiger King series, but lately I have been watching some old episodes of Bones, Heartland and the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens. I’m getting ready to start watching Yellowstone, too. As far as listening goes, I am all about the new and current country artists when they go live. You learn more about them and their music, so it’s like work and fun all in one. My go-to quarantine snack has been root beer floats. Odd, I know! The ability to be creative, get more sleep,

How did the Taylor Swift performance happen after a seven-year absence? DCP’s Mark Bracco has a close working relationship with her managers, Andrea Swift and Robert Allen, and her publicist and former ACM Lifting Lives chair Tree Paine. Mark had asked earlier in the summer, checked in and really stayed on it. When her new album came out with a song going to Country radio, he had already laid the groundwork. All props to him. How was the first show with a new host? I love every one that preceded him, but Keith Urban was the exact right host for this moment in ACM history. As a musician, passionate performer and master of ceremonies, he set the perfect tone. Working with our writers, they crafted something that fit the times and these venues. Did you consider using canned applause? Because we pre-taped performances at The Ryman, we experimented. No applause, light applause, regular applause with a music bed, just music. In the end, the applause just didn’t feel right. This isn’t sports. We embraced the silence, reprised previous performances or used library music in the transitions.
