Radio Reacts To 55th ACMs

Artists may have played to empty seats and given acceptance speeches in darkened venues, but Wednesday’s (9/16) 55th ACM Awards telecast was watched by radio pros nationwide from the best seat in the their houses. Here are some of their observations. WFUS/Tampa’s Sarah Jacobs: I’ll start with Sarah Jacobs the obvious – two Entertainer of the Year winners?! What in the world? Why is there no tiebreaker method? Do we hand out two Vince Lombardi trophies? Two Stanley Cups? Nope. Hopefully there will be a way to prevent a tie in the future. Not that I don’t think both Thomas Rhett and Carrie Underwood are incredibly deserving – hell, I was pulling for her to win that award in 2017 – but, it’s just so strange to end up with co-winners. Charlie Monk As Carrie said, “2020, man!” SiriusXM’s Charlie Monk: Every artist has done at least one show streaming from their bathroom or closet, so the “no audience” thing wasn’t new. This show was done as well as any late-night show – maybe better. The sound was also better than most television shows. Since I have daughters and granddaughters, I thought the Mickey Guyton performance was excellent. Opie Joe WCYQ/Knoxville’s Opie Joe: The performance of the night was Carrie Underwood. No contest; don’t @ me. She nailed that powerhouse medley and tribute to the legendary women of country music, and I’m still talking about it. I was also looking forward to the Keith Urban and Pink collaboration, and it didn’t disappoint. That song is a bop! KRTY/San Jose’s Nate Deaton: Eric Nate Deaton Church had the performance of the night, and he was just as passionate as if it had been (continued on page 11)

ACM Awards Quotebook

Members of the media traded in their dress pants for sweatpants, boxed dinners for Uber Eats and pipe and drape for living and bedroom walls during the 55th ACM Awards Virtual Press Room Wednesday (9/16). Held via Zoom, interviewers were invited to ask performers and presenters questions … when they remembered to take themselves off mute. Tie A Happy Man: For the first time in ACM Awards history, there was a tie in the Entertainer of the Year category, with Thomas Rhett and Carrie Underwood Carrie both receiving the highest honor of the night Underwood – Rhett’s first and Underwood’s third win in the category. Rhett summed up everyone’s feelings: “It’s just been such a weird year.” When host Keith Urban called the names,

Rhett couldn’t believe it. Literally. “I was like, ‘There’s no way. There’s no way.’” Calling the experience of tying with Underwood “mind blowing,” Rhett went on to say, “Being a huge fan of Carrie since I can remember — 15 or 16 years old — and winning an iconic award with her, it solidified a lot of things for me.” He wrapped, “I think this was a big pat on the back for the amount of hours we put in, rehearsing, improvising and making our show the best it could possibly be. Tonight is just such a dream.” Under/Over: Underwood called her third win in the category “special” before going on to talk about being looked up to the way she did to Dolly and Loretta — both of whom she honored during her medley. “I don’t think I can ever look at myself like that. I feel like a tourist still, you know? And I’m waiting for the day that [people] figure me out and leave me behind or something.” The Masked Singers: When asked why they were wearing masks in the virtual press room and during their speech, Group of the Year Old Dominion looked around in confusion. “Is no one else doing this?” questioned Matthew Ramsey. And Ramsey’s thoughts on talking to an empty room? “Strange.” After Old Dominion being apart for what “felt like 70 years” to Shay Mooney, but was in reality a couple of months, Duo of the Year Dan + Shay reunited and wrote their new single, “I Should Probably Go To Bed.” “[We] sat down at the piano,

and the chemistry was just ... it’s that thing that ... it’s tough to explain,” gushed Dan Smyers. “I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon this guy here in Nashville. It’s the crazy thing that happens when you move to town. A lot of magic happens.” First-Case Scenario: In a generational shift, both Maren Morris and Luke Combs took home their first wins in the Female and Male Artist categories, respectively. “The female vocalist award is just so monumental,” observed Morris. “I am so inspired by and friends with every single woman in that category. I know how much we uplift and support each other in this community.” Speaking from The Bluebird Cafe, Combs shared how it felt winning an award he’s seen his heroes win. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘Man, if I could put that kind of work in and achieve those kinds of things, that would be a dream come true.’” He wrapped, “Thank you to Country radio.” This One’s For The Girls: Following her performance of “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” with surprise guest Urban (watch here), Mickey Guyton said, “It means so much to me to stand here and sing such a polarizing Mickey Guyton song on the ACM Awards about protecting our future, protecting our daughters, protecting women, because we’re important, and we matter.” Guyton, who serves on the ACM Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, noted “All people have to do is see themselves and feel encouraged to be a part of this community. And they can, and ACM really has shown that tonight.” Added Cam, “It’s not very often you get to see something, and in the moment you actually know it’s history happening. When we say we go hard for women, we need to go 200% hard for black women. That’s something that I’m really happy to see … so many people lift her up tonight.”

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Valory’s Tyler Rich: For as long as I can remember, my life has been spent on the road. I’ve never had a regular schedule, just like most musicians. Even though I’m now married, my wife and I still split time between Nashville and LA because of our careers. The longest we are usually together is during the holidays … other than that, we have a usual three-to-five-days on and five-to-sevendays off routine. We’ve been together for five months straight now, and we are loving every second of it. We actually finally feel married! I’m such a night owl usually – asleep around 2-3am and up around 10am. During the pandemic, I’ve been on what Sabina calls “the old man schedule.” I’m usually asleep by about 10-11pm and up around 6-7am. I’m awake and checking the stock market first thing in the morning and making moves on that before Sabina even wakes up. I’m biking and running a lot in the morning and reading as much as possible. Netflix can be addicting, so I’m working on including more literature in my routine. I have always hated running with a passion. But, a bunch of friends and I started a “quarantine run club.” We all live across the country from each other. We run our routes and share results with each other as motivation. It’s been amazing. We have goals each month, like run a 10k or hit 100 miles for the whole month. It really does become euphoric, and I look forward to my runs now. Zoom writing can still be weird, but it was easy for me to get used to pretty quickly. Especially working

with other songwriters I know well. There were a couple of amazing surprises along the way from what I thought would be awkward zoom “blind date” writes with strangers that turned into amazing new songs. As far as recording, we finished the last couple songs for my debut album, Two Thousand Miles, in quarantine. I recorded a lot here, other musicians in their own spaces and my producer Lindsay in Nashville, as well. It’s been a learning curve, but everything sounds incredible, and I’m super proud of how we were able to still accomplish so much in a strange time. I’ve done multiple IG live shows every week for five months now. Originally as a way to keep fans engaged, but it became so much more than that. Over these months, I have grown closer with my fans because of it. I look forward to seeing their names and comments pop up on the lives … it’s almost like we get to hang out every week. It’s way better than quick meet and greets at shows. It feels raw and real. We watched Succession on HBO, and I cannot recommend it more. So good. Other amazing finds for me have been ZeroZeroZero on Amazon Prime, Ozark and catching up on Vikings and The Walking Dead. I’m a big movie guy, so I mostly watch films, but loving all those shows. And The Writer Is is an incredible podcast I’ve been bingeing. I listen to The Daily literally daily, and I’m working my way through a few books. The War Of Art, Between The World And Me, The Unbearable Lightness of Being and a day trading book for stocks for my new side hustle. Unfortunately, candy is my go-to quarantine snack. I have the biggest sweet tooth in the world, so

Generally speaking, and considering the circumstances, Radio Row got high marks. “ACM’s Melissa Moldovan and Ellen [Appleton]’s team of engineers were really on top of everything, from working out the technologies we needed to use to accommodating our hosts and production/digital teams,” says WWKA/Orlando MD/mornings Ashley Stegbauer Morrison, who called the workflow “familiar.” Adds Westwood One syndicated personality Elaina Smith, “The quick turnaround with

the audio was amazing – we had everything delivered in a drop box minutes after we wrapped an interview.” Beasley WXTU/Philadelphia PD Mark Razz also appreciated the onsite engineering team. “They were in constant communication with us, and having a heads-up text about what artist was coming up next – and being given a 10-minute lead time – was fantastic!” Radio Disney Network Sr. Mgr./Music Programming Kris Daniels agrees, “They were our eyes and ears since we couldn’t be there.” CMT After MidNite Sr. Producer Curt Miller said show host Cody Alan missed the personal interaction, but “our biggest priority is what comes out of the speakers, and we nailed that one thanks to the talented engineering team.” “This was definitely a different, quieter experience,” says Trisha McClanahan, who manages Lauren Alaina. “What I really liked was the artist spacing. There was never a wait and the stations were ready to go. Past remotes were way more chaotic.” Mickey Guyton manager Erik Peterson adds, “The ACM team, especially Brenda, did a great job of informing us of how [it] would run and how her health and safety would be their top priority. The space was well organized, spaced appropriately and the atmosphere was very chill.” Zoom Room: The improvement most requested by radio participants is video quality. Morrison thought it could be as simple as having artists move closer. Better cameras and lighting would do the trick for KSCS/Dallas APD/afternooner Al Farb. “Had we had more time to think through things, we could have arranged to add enhancements such as a direct audio feed from Nashville to our studios to easily grab clips,” he says. From the artist perspective, McClanahan noted a few things. “The adaptors on the artist headsets were heavy and difficult to manage without pulling the ears out,” she says. “From the manager’s perspective, it was difficult being unable to hear the radio side of the interviews; I could only hear the artist responses.” Artist camps and radio also noted problems managing the length of interviews without in-the-room talent wranglers. “The host also has to be the wrap-up person,” says Sun syndicated host Sam Alex, “which led to some funny moments, including during our interview with Old Dominion.” One of the few dissenters on overall organization is Curb National Dir./Promotion Mike Rogers, who found it difficult to get information ahead of the event and had some timing issues with COVID testing. “This was an exceptional year dealing with COVID, so moving forward this should not be an issue,” he says. “Going from laptop to laptop was super-efficient but very stale. All of the artists kept commenting on how weird it was not to be able to hug the interviewers and show some camaraderie. For efficiency and cost, it worked pretty well, [but] we would all prefer the inperson experience.”

At least one artist got the old school remotes vibe – socially distanced, of course. “One of Mickey’s last public appearances was at the Ryman for CRS ... so being able to reconnect at the ACMs, around ‘What Are You Gonna Tell Her’ was a special moment,” Peterson says. “She loved getting to see friends like Cam, Kelsea Ballerini and Tenille Townes in person – even if it was from across the room.” Also drawing raves, WFH, yo. “Maybe we could keep the part where we wear sweatpants,” Smith jokes. “Both days, I was business on top and bedtime on the bottom, and I wasn’t mad at it!” Miller has a better idea: “If Bob Kingsley is reading this, could he please put in a good word with The Man Upstairs for COVID-free remotes in 2021? (continued from page 1) a live performance in front of 20,000 people. The tie for Entertainer of the Year was obviously crazy. Out of that many votes, it is a tie? But, okay, it’s 2020, and honestly, they could have had a five-way tie and pulled it off. Outside of the CMA Awards in a few weeks, I hope it was a one-time show like 2020 is a one-time year and we can go back to Vegas and start over in April. Cumulus/Albuquerque’s Mandi Vaquera: Audience or no audience, I was just happy to have something live to watch, and I think they did a great job at all locations. I loved it all, but Old Dominion’s compilation was amazing, and their acceptance speech paying tribute to the Mandi Vaquera people they lost was moving.

KWFI & KWFO/Idaho Falls, ID’s Don Jarrett: I really enjoyed the segment with Luke Combs, Ford and the guitars for veterans; that was very well produced. At times, the show did seem sterile and lifeless without a crowd, and I missed the applause, audience reactions and candid shots of the artists. The speeches didn’t quite conjure the same emotion as standing in front of a live audience of fans and peers. I’m sure each artist was excited, but it was hard to feel it. Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Becky Brenner: Keith Urban did an excellent job hosting; he was real, genuine and seemed truly excited for the performers and winners. I like the rotation between the venues, the sweeping Don Jarrett views of Nashville as they moved from location to location and the use of lights to simulate people holding lighters in the seats. It was cool to see Dan + Shay and Old Dominion showing their pandemic smarts during their acceptance speeches: Shay [Mooney] staying off mic to shout his thanks since Dan [Smyers] had been there first, and Old Dominion coming out with their masks on and a setting good example. WKHX/Atlanta’s Lucas Phelan: Instead Becky Brenner of having the winners walk onstage to accept the awards, I would have liked to have seen something like we saw from the NFL Draft with cameras at their houses or in a green room. My favorite performance from any awards show I can ever remember – I seriously had goosebumps – came from Eric F*%k!n$ Church! Memorable moments also included Maren [Morris] declaring “I gotta pee!” and Jimmie Lucas Phelan Allen making his “de-boo,” as Keith [Urban] said. I wish I had one-sixteenth the style and was a fraction as cool as Jimmie! KNIX/Phoenix’s Lois “Double-L” Lewis: I loved the three setups and how they used each space appropriately. They did a stellar job coordinating the right acts with the most impactful moments from their respectful venues, and it was a great representation of what Lois “Double-L” Nashville has to offer for anyone who hasn’t Lewis had the chance to go there yet. Old Dominion walking out for their acceptance speech with masks on was poignant. Overall, I give it an A+ in a D- year. KRRV/Alexandria, LA’s Melissa Frost: The performances

from the Opry House felt like you were sitting in on a rehearsal; they could’ve done the show from the Ryman and Bluebird. Trisha Yearwood’s performance was beautiful, and having Charlie Daniels’ photo near the end was perfect. I was also excited Carrie Underwood included Barbara Mandrell in her medley. Barbara has had a truly amazing career and broke down so many doors for women in this business, and yet for years she was never included in these types of tributes. All in all, it wasn’t a bad show, it was just very different. Consultant Joel Raab: It was nice to see new artists like Morgan Wallen and Gabby Barrett doing full performances, perhaps Melissa Frost signaling a changing of the guard. Blake [Shelton]’s shout-out to Country radio for “playing the crap out of” his music for 20 years was certainly appreciated, and the “On The Road Again” montage over the credits was a perfect exclamation point to the evening. WXTU/Philadelphia’s Nicole Michalik: Stand-out moments were Dan + Shay playing a stripped-down version of “I Should Probably Go To Bed,” Kane Brown’s performance of Joel Raab “Worldwide Beautiful” and of course Taylor Swift. I love how she commits to a specific look for every album – slacks and kitten heels for the win! Mickey Guyton’s performance was important, and she is so talented, not to mention she did it while pregnant, which makes her even more badass! Midwest’s Tom Baldrica: The tenor of the entire evening was appropriate ... [but] I hated Nicole Michalik that the Radio Award winners were relegated to a passing voiceover into a commercial break. It’s bad enough that it wasn’t even the awardwinning voices introducing themselves, but the extra slap came with no photo or station graphics. I had some moments of musical clarity: Trisha Yearwood’s voice is a national treasure, Tenille Townes exploded off my television screen and out of my speakers into my soul, nobody sells a song like Tim McGraw or looks as good doing it, there’s Tom Baldrica nothing Keith Urban can’t do, Kane Brown has my attention and Taylor Swift ... “I don’t know anything, but I know I miss you.” For three hours, I felt connected to my country music community in a way I haven’t since CRS. –Monta Vaden CAC
