Sales: Managing In A Pandemic

Declines in cume and share, shifts in TSL, cancelled events and furloughs have impacted programming teams, but how have those same challenges affected sales staff and management during the ongoing pandemic? Market Managers, GMs and GSMs tell Country Aircheck how their teams are battling back against significant losses in revenue, shifting key client categories, business closures and a lack of traditional, sellable event-based promotions. Since mid-March, most sales teams have been working remotely, but the lack of daily in-office banter and routine sales meetings have not been the only hurdles to overcome. In-person client meetings, brainstorming sessions and cold calling have also all but been eliminated. But, as with most facets of the industry, video conferencing software has come to the rescue. “Technology cannot replace the social nature of a face-to-face call, but it does make the interaction more effective and meaningful than a phone call,” says Beasley WXTU/ Philadelphia GSM Rob Keegan. “Zoom Rob Keegan also allows us to take cues from our clients’ body language.” Say Cheese: The conferencing platforms have also assisted managers in connecting with their teams and maintaining a sense of normalcy for staff and clients, but that only goes so far. “If you ever read the book Who Moved My Cheese, you know all about the change cycle and helping clients get through that cycle as quickly as possible so they can Dan McKee move forward,” explains Summit/Knoxville GSM Dan McKee. “Some businesses get stuck in their tracks while others see new opportunities quickly. Pictured (clockwise from top left) are Ben Goldsmith, Drew Parker, Bobby Pinson and Jared Mullins with the maker of the original sweet tea from the lyrics, his mother Kim.

Radio On Choosing EOY

No shows, no crowds and Garth wants out (CAT 7/29). How exactly does one choose an Entertainer of the Year in this environment? And what are the elements included in that decisionmaking process? Country Aircheck reached out to a range of PDs and MDs for their thoughts on arriving at this year’s most worthy nominees.

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Steel City KBEQ/Kansas City night host Anthony “Keebler” Capra: Quarantine has changed everything in every way. I haven’t talked to anyone but my family and coworkers; I miss people! Life is just home, chores, work, Netflix, sleep and repeat. I hate routines now, and I need something different. It’s just me, my cat Sinatra, oldest dog Chivette and the newest addition to my little family, Corona the dog. I got her when the pandemic started, and she’s just like this virus – unpredictable. Before the pandemic, I would go into the studio early, get audio, shoot a video and start the show. Now I can only go in just as the show starts. When you’re busy talking, all the other stuff has to take a backseat. When people are home, they don’t call into the station as much, so you find yourself

talking about the same things. Much like everyone else, I think getting back to normal will get our brains working again. I’ve been watching YouTube tutorials on being a better video editor. If I can’t make videos, I might as well level up on my skills for when everything goes back to normal … whenever that might be. My newest hobby is playing [video game] MLB: The Show. I miss sports, so I figured I would do it virtually. Domino’s pizza has been my quarantine binge. I should buy stock in the company with how many pizzas I’ve ordered! Not to make anyone jealous, but I also haven’t gained a pound. It’s a sad time we’re living in, from quarantine to protests. Everything has been downright awful, and I’m hoping people will start coming together. That’s what I really want. Ask Capra for diet tips here.

• WMIL/Milwaukee’s Quinn: I know it was last year, but seeing Eric Church on tour was mind blowing. I can still feel the electricity from his show at the Fiserv Forum, and “Stick That In Your Country Song” is next level good, too. Six of the top seven songs in our research are Luke Combs, and I’ve always appreciated him, but seeing him live made me a fan. What I look for is how an artist makes the crowd feel. Looking around while attending both shows, the audience was always engaged and/or in awe. As a runner-up, Old Dominion Quinn are so underrated. I have been a huge fan since I saw them open for Kenny [Chesney] at Miller Park in 2018. And “Some People Do” is a masterpiece. • Hubbard/Seattle’s Scott Mahalick: Blake Shelton, Garth and Luke Combs. Blake and Garth did drive-in movies, but Blake include other artists. Luke has done a lot of Facebook produced

performances, mic’d up and singing six feet apart. I’m looking at the forward-thinkers who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and reach out to the fans through socials and radio. An unexpected contender could be Ashley McBryde, who is fearlessly jumping on multiple video calls in a day if needed. • Cox/Houston’s Scott Mahalick Johnny Chiang: With no live shows, who exactly is entertaining these days? One would have to look at the artists who adapted quickly and took advantage of the video meeting phenomenon. I can’t think of an artist who’s made a bigger splash on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, etc. than Brad Paisley. How many real people’s Johnny Chiang virtual happy hours did this guy crash?

WITH

A day in the self-isolated life of singer/ songwriter/producer/label exec. Nicolle Galyon: In March, my family moved to my hometown of Sterling, Kansas. Since then, it’s been full of Zoom meetings from my closet and a lot of balancing work and kids. I’ve got a new podcast coming out and exciting things happening with Songs & Daughters, and everything is being handled virtually. Every day is its own animal — some days I’m swimming with the kids, and some days I’m locked in a room on meetings and writing sessions. No two days look alike right now. I’m in Kansas with my two kids and husband, living next door to my parents. We are really leaning on the outdoors for activities and fun. Depending on if Rodney or I am working, we will trade off using the house as an office. We’ve also given ourselves a lot of permission to cancel things and surrender to the fact that our main goal is to be together and happy. I’ve adopted a new hobby … drinking. Just kidding. I’ve been cooking a lot. I’ve really loved cooking and the way it grounds my days. I think I’m just as creative in quarantine, but in shorter spurts. It’s been a

• KCCY/Colorado Springs’ Shawn Patrick: You have to look at the artist as a whole, rather than what they did as an “entertainer” on the road. Who has put out quality music? Who has continued to engage fans in alternate settings? Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Eric Church and Blake Shelton. Luke Combs hasn’t ever been nominated for this before, but he is a no-brainer. Brad Paisley is a guy who has done a fantastic job engaging

lesson in being more efficient. A co-write that used to be five hours is now getting done in two. I’ve found myself writing with people I have a creative connection with already, and writing for projects I’m really passionate about. It’s teaching me to be more agile while switching from one thing to the next: home to work with no commute in between requires some quick pivoting. Finding myself in front of so many more screens each day has actually made for craving and bingeing face-to-face conversations on my porch. I have loved circling up with the people I’m quarantined with on my porch and really connecting. My go-to quarantine snack is everything except vegetables. Everything that isn’t green. We’ve been given permission to live in small town America with our family. Charlie is getting to play softball in my hometown, and nights are spent at the Sterling softball field. Living next door to my parents makes for

during the pandemic, and he was close to making my list. I also hate not to include a female, but I just didn’t think there was one that matched up to what the four guys I included have done. Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett and Kane Brown all could have a case for being considered snubs. • KFRG/Riverside’s Heather Froglear: I’m looking at tours, TV shows, social media presence and philanthropy. putting out quality music, but they are putting in the work. So, Blake Shelton, Dan + Shay, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert and Kenny Chesney. These artists are some of the hardest working people representing our format. Miranda not only writes and performs, she’s single-handedly changing the world of pet adoption through MuttNation. Dan + Shay are some of the most tangible to their fans through socials; the content they put out aside from their smash hits is unparalleled. Blake had my favorite tour this year (saw him in March right before COVID-19 at the LA Forum), and The Voice is bringing new fans to country. Chesney is a machine, and I’m impressed not only by his still-relevant songs but his heart for others after a tragedy (i.e. rebuilding St. John). Luke Combs was one of the first to start doing livestream performances and sharing new music via socials. He’s just a brilliant singer/songwriter. • WXFL/Florence, AL’s Fletcher Brown: Who made the biggest impact? You can’t just look at touring numbers. Are they dominating the country news cycle? Who is everyone talking about? Did they have the biggest album drop? Are they trending on socials frequently? Fletcher Brown Why are they trending? How innovative are they at keeping up with their fan’s expectations during a time like this? For 2020, I look at Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett, Eric Church, Luke Combs and Miranda Lambert – with Eric Church being the front runner – followed really closely by Luke Combs. Both of them are having a real moment right now – one that could define the future of the format. • WEBG/Chicago’s Lance Houston: Blake Lance Houston

Page 17

Shelton (what a lineup on his tour!), Carrie Underwood and Eric Church (should be nominated every year). But there’s no doubt the only choice this year is Luke Combs. I was lucky enough to see one of his arena shows in Peoria in February, and ... he had the entire crowd in the palm of his hand the entire time. You have to think about shows you saw in late 2019 and early 2020 to decide, but it’s also about promoting and championing the country music industry as a whole. That’s where Luke Combs rides away with it! • KYGO/Denver MD Patrick Knight: Carrie Underwood. If you praise Blake and Luke Bryan for TV, you have to put Carrie on Patrick Knight for Sunday Night Football, hosting the CMA Awards, her fitness app, book and – oh yeah – a great tour. Eric Church arguably had the best tour last year with the passion, energy and length of his set each and every night. Blake Shelton is on one of the most-watched non-football programs in America, had a sold-out tour and had a great year musically. Like Blake, Luke Bryan exposes country to a large TV audience and topped the charts all year. Luke Combs. That’s all you need to say. His SNL appearance was pretty sweet, as well. And over the next several years, I expect Maren Morris, Morgan Wallen, Sam Hunt and Jordan Davis being talked about for this category. Some quicker than others, obviously, but they will all be consistently headlining arenas or stadiums. • KWJJ/Portland’s Scott Roddy: The pandemic has shown who the real superstars are. Putting music aside for a moment, when Scott we strip away the staging and support – the Roddy

machine that wraps around tour season – we are left with talent that decide to either virtually connect/entertain their followers or withdraw. Luke Bryan has always been a stage and TV phenom. During the pandemic, he’s made himself available to fans and radio with the same humility and vigor of a brand new act. In the same vein, Keith Urban has always been eager to connect with his fans and, as an ambassador for the format, he’s an all-time great. Entertaining is about forging relationships. The true entertainers this year raised the bar to connect and exploit technology to foster that relationship. –Chuck Aly

Chart Chat

Congratulations to LoCash, Carson James, Ken Tucker, Renee Leymon, Jennifer Shaffer and the Wheelhouse promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “One Big Country Song.” The song is the second single from the duo’s third studio album, Brothers. Songwriters are Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Hardy. LoCash made the move from No. 6 to No. 1 with the chart year’s biggest point jump to the peak so far. The last time a song made the same 6-to-1 leap was nearly four years ago (CAW 10/17/16) when LoCash registered their first No. 1 single, “I Know Somebody,” then worked by Reviver. Additionally, “One Big Country Song” marks Gorley’s 50th No. 1 at Country radio, making him the only songwriter of any genre to earn 50

No. 1s in the history of the Country Aircheck/Mediabase Airplay charts. The run dates back to “Don’t Forget To Remember Me,” which Carrie Underwood took to No. 1 in July 2006. And kudos to Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR crew on notching 105 adds for Dan + Shay’s “I Should Probably Go To Bed,” landing atop this week’s board.

Sales: Managing In A Pandemic

We have several clients who are growing and gaining market share, because they have stuck with their plans and made the commitment to increase their share of voice while others retrenched.” Creativity can’t be underestimated in a rapidly shifting marketplace. “Creative assistance is the number one priority for our sales staff in support of key clients,” notes Alpha/ Portland DOS Cressy Walton. “They really had to sharpen their copywriting skills to keep their advertisers’ creative current and timely, given the circumstances at the time, and we worked with many of our categories hit particularly hard to create PSA campaigns supporting hand washing or offering assistance to those listeners who had been furloughed or laid off due to their employers having to close their doors.” Client categories and spending levels have been in flux at many clusters. “We are seeing traditional categories like health step into more technology like telemedicine,” says Emmis/Indianapolis VP/DOS Taja Taja Graham Graham. Adds Renda/Pittsburgh & Jacksonville Regional Market Manager Bill Berry, “In Q2, when so many categories were pulling off, we did see some home improvement companies putting more money on as homeowners spending more time at home started noticing things around the house that needed to be done. We also saw increases in some medical businesses as well as home delivery. Now with so many businesses re-opening, recruitment seems to be on the rise.” Other managers noted increases in spending from clients in grocery, food delivery and auto categories during the pandemic with Keegan noting a local Subaru dealer set an all-time sales record during the pandemic by moving 300 cars in a month against his previous best of 188. Value Added: Additional client services have included helping with business strategy, marketing plans and growth initiatives. “We hosted many webinars for clients reviewing all the insight studies that Borrell, NuVooDoo and Nielsen have been doing,” says Mel Wheeler/Roanoke VP/Sales Nadra Scott. “We strive to be an extension of [our clients’] marketing teams.” Berry agrees, saying, “The key is ideas, because one client might be dealing with a problem that is completely different than their direct competitor. Listening Nadra Scott to clients’ needs via webcam then putting together a specific plan to help address those needs is what we do best. The needs may change during a time like this, but the solution does not. It’s all about great

Page 22

ideas!” Walton’s cluster also executed a Million Dollar Match relief program for small businesses and local charities interested in running campaigns but had a limited marketing budget. Idea Generation: Where live events and concerts have fallen off, digital and NTR revenue has continued steady growth for many clusters. Scott touts her team currently pacing ahead of 2019 in digital categories. McKee cites NTR opportunities created by his cluster, including a client-sponsored chalk art contest promoted on-air and held across social media and web platforms for the July 4 holiday. Keegan’s group spearheaded digital appearances in place of onsite remotes. “These are short Cressy Walton video productions with our personality on location to demonstrate the customer experience,” he says. “We take great care to ensure the videos are entertaining and informative, and by posting and sharing them, the engagement levels have been off the charts.” Keegan notes some of the videos have captured 40,000 or more views, which is notably more exposure than a client may get from a two-hour live remote broadcast. He sees potential for an on-going product offering, even after the pandemic subsides. Goal Posts: Most companies have realigned goals for sales teams amid the economic downturns, with many sales managers emphasizing training, support and positive reinforcement. “I’m big on culture, and one thing our company did was to share all success stories with every AE companywide,” notes Berry. “Yes, it did fill up everybody’s inboxes, but it was well worth it. Seeing multiple emails per day from salespeople sharing specific success stories reminds them that the next sale could be one call away. When the negative forces are coming against you and your income is dropping, having a team of people around you to lift you up and help you through it can make all the difference.” That support extends to clients, as well, says Graham. “Having an empathetic presence is important, and clients have said, ‘You are the only one who has reached out,’” she notes. “In times of uncertainty, the client appreciates that we care and want to help.” How radio weathers the pandemic is yet to be completely seen, but managers seem to have maintained their confidence in the medium. “Not only does radio work, but radio has the flexibility to change or run multiple messages quickly to achieve the clients’ goals,” explains Keegan. Adds Walton, “Radio is targeted, mobile, data driven and evokes emotion in a different way than anything visual. If the creative is right in telling the audience how a product or services is going Bill to make their life better, it’s a game changer Berry for the advertiser. Audio is the now and the future!” And, as far as competition from visual mediums? “I’ve heard numerous friends and clients tell me they are so tired of what’s on the television news that they’ve turned it off,” McKee says. “Music provides an escape, and it can lift us up. Radio is intrusive, it’s emotional, it’s local and the DJs are your friends; you trust them. We are an integral part of our communities.” Reach Keegan here, McKee here, Walton here, Graham here, Berry here and Scott here. –Monta Vaden
