Starting a new job is hard; starting a new job in the midst of a global pandemic adds its own unique set of challenges. Cherry Creek Country KIYK & KCIN/St. George, UT midday personality Chris Cruise, Warner/WAR Dir./National Radio & Streaming Promotion Michael Chase and Stoney Creek VP/Innovation, Radio & Streaming Adrian Michaels shared how they’re overcoming those challenges — hint: it involves a lot of video chat — with Country Aircheck. “[PD] Aaronee Cottam saw a couple of my videos on Facebook, and we started talking Chris Cruise via phone and Facebook Messenger about putting my The Premix show on,” says Cruise. “That didn’t work out, but she said they were looking for a midday personality. I said, ‘Let’s go.’” Now on his “third or fourth” Country station, Detroit-based Cruise has not only never met his co-workers in person, but he’s never stepped foot in St. George, UT. When asked about moving there – or anywhere – in the future, Cruise says, “I love Detroit. I have Michael Chase two nephews who I get to see every weekend, and my parents live 20 minutes from me. I’ve had to tell a couple of programmers, ‘Hey, I appreciate it, but I need six figures and some change to even think about it.’ Not because I’m cocky or think I deserve it … I just don’t want to move.” Exhibit Opening: Michaels left Warner/ WEA at the end of May (CAT 4/28) after six years at the label group … well, maybe Adrian Michaels left isn’t the right word. “My contract was coming up, and I knew that I was going to take on a different job,” he explains. “But the way it came up, my office is still there; everything’s still on my desk. There is an Adrian Michaels museum sitting in the middle of Warner.” (continued on page 8)

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Arista VP/ Promotion Josh Easler: Not having shows to cover or actual promotion tours and the associated travel is the biggest difference. The nuts and bolts of calling PDs and asking for adds or conversions hasn’t changed much, whether I’m in my office in The Gulch or at home. Setting appointments with radio is the most important thing I’ve found. Their schedules are fragmented, and they are often splitting time between home and the station, so it’s best to block time to talk with them. You get more business done that way. Another significant change is how far down the audience has been. That’s tragic for radio but also impacts us in how much longer it can take to get a song to familiarity. It takes a while for research to come around, which makes it tougher to know what you have. The biggest thing we’ve come up with is a virtual promotion tour concept we’re proud of. Traditionally, we’d spend six or eight

weeks and a big chunk of money playing listener lounges, conference rooms and PD offices. This week, we’re launching Robert Counts with a fully produced virtual tour that includes a welcome from [Sony/Nashville Chairman/CEO Randy Goodman], a lyric video and performance, followed by a virtual Zoom hang with Robert. It’s more intentional and produced than others I’ve seen done, and we’ve spent a lot of time, energy and money putting it together. I make a point to get out of the house before and after work, riding my bike on trails every morning and hitting some golf balls after work. I’ve also made it a point to eat lunch from a local restaurant ... sometimes I’ll take it to a local park and sit at a picnic table. Getting out at least two, maybe three times a day creates some routine. I’ve always loved to cook, but now I do more meal prep to have a couple of days of food on hand. So, I’m more strategic in that way. Even when I was traveling, I always had a

garden, but it’s much larger this year. The only thing I’ve watched on TV is Schitt’s Creek, and I didn’t binge it. If there’s any leisure activity I’ve given more time to, it’s golf. The days are equally if not busier than before with calls and Teams meetings. The difference is not being on the road or in traffic at the end of the day. The extra hour or two of daylight really helps.

Beasley, Tim Wilson, Chuck Edwards and Mark “Hawkeye” Louis now have to wait even longer for a career crowning moment. “We notified them all, of course, and several had already reached out with inquiries and assured us they were in support of whatever decisions we had to make,” Curtis says. While a new date hasn’t been set, it’s a safe bet it won’t be in 2020. “It’s right to assume the 2020 class will actually be inducted in 2021, hopefully early,” he says, which means two inductions next year. “As we’ve done in the past, the plan is to announce the 2021 Hall class during CRS, with induction set for the summer.” About that Feb. 17-19 plan for next year’s CRS ... “We’re full steam ahead. Of course, things could change, but we’ll address those situations as they come to us. I’m hopeful and thinking that CRS 2021 could be an incredible reunion for our whole industry. CRS sort of

A day in the self-isolated life of Entercom KFRG/ Riverside, CA afternoon personality/digital content creator Anthony “Frogatelli” Donatelli: I’m saving big on gas money now that I’m working from home every day. I get to see my wife and dog more, which is great, but I do miss seeing my K-Frog family. I also haven’t worn real pants in close to five months! I didn’t know how to balance work and downtime while working from home when this first started; now, I have it down perfectly. I’ll wake up, go on a bike ride, have breakfast with my wife, start working, take a lunch break, get back to work, go on a walk with the dog, finish work, have dinner and read before bed. Then, I call it a day. I’ve been working from home since March, and there have been ups and downs. I start the day by taking a look at what new info is trending and make sure I’m on top of everything that I may have missed while I was sleeping. I’ll write a few pieces of content for the website, schedule posts for our social media pages, then do my show later in the day. My wife has been so supportive making sure I’m taking breaks and not skipping meals. I wouldn’t have been able to get through this without her. My dog barks a lot throughout the day, so he’s been the annoying one. I have a newfound love for bike riding. My wife

got me a bike for my birthday in May, and I’ve been looking up different trails nearby to ride. I’ll pop my headphones in, and it’s a great escape. Forty miles is my current personal best. Socially, I find myself coming up with more interactive content to get listeners involved, and programmatically, it’s nice knowing there are a lot of people in the same boat as I am, so I can make being stuck at home sound relative for all of us. Going live has been my listeners’ favorite part of the day. I do a show on Instagram Live called Fun At 4 where every day at 4pm PT, I play different games – Connect 4, Pictionary, Tic-Tac-Toe – with listeners. It’s been a great way to connect and show that we really are all in this together. I can’t stop watching Friends. It’s one of my alltime favorite shows, and it’s a comfort show for me. I’ve also been watching The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons of All-Time, because I love the drama, and I’ve been reading Extreme Ownership, which is a fantastic read for anybody who works with a team. My go-to snack has been ice cream. Before or after dinner, I find myself taking a spoon to the carton almost every day. I had so many house projects I’d been putting off, and I was finally able to do those and more since being home. Now I’m excited to have people

version of Strait’s “The Fireman.” “This new company Copperline Music is run by some guys I know, and they signed an act of ours – Davisson Brothers Band – to the label,” he says. “We were looking for distribution on Stone Senate and decided to give it a roll.” Beyond Erv himself, Rollin’ The Dice also has industry vet Allen Mitchell on staff. “We’ve got some people working social media, too,” Woolsey says. “This effort is all about getting a bigger audience for the band.” Stone Senate has had success primarily touring the rock circuit on the east coast and, despite its lineage, “The Fireman” isn’t targeted at Country ... or terrestrial radio at all. “Their blues and

southern rock roots are showing out, and we’re seeing what we can get done,” he says. “If you can get on SiriusXM, Spotify and those kinds of things, you can generate some interest without competing with major labels. Radio is still the driver, but other things have come into play that make things kind of interesting.” As to future signings and working in his country music wheelhouse, Woolsey says, “It just depends what’s a good fit.” –Chuck Aly

Please Stay Home (continued from page 1) Unlike Michaels, who had years of experience in the country music industry and already resided in Nashville, Chase had spent the past 16 years in Atlanta working in Pop — both on the radio and label side (CAT 4/8). He visited Nashville and met with [VP] Tom Martens, [EVP/GM] Ben Kline and [Chairman/CEO] John Esposito a couple weeks before the company’s offices closed, which slowed the onboarding process and caused him to wonder, “Is this a sign?” A longtime admiration of Warner and the WAR team bolstered his confidence. “I knew that if and when I ever got a chance to work with them, I was definitely going to jump on it,” Chase says. “So I decided to go with it. I was betting on the future after the pandemic.” What was the process of moving during a pandemic like? Luckily for Chase, he had a “man” on the inside. “I have family here, so my sister did a little house hunting and FaceTimed us from a neighborhood in Spring Hill a friend told us about. We kind of bought a house sight unseen, which was weird.” Rather than moving, Cruise focused on upgrading his at-home set-up, adding acoustic panels, a mic processor and a “decent” mic and windscreen. FTP site which are then uploaded in the system. “I’ve listened quite a few times, and it sounds pretty good,” he says. “I send to Keysight, and whatever happens next is magic.” Other than needing to increase his volume a Back In Plaque: Adrian Michaels’ bit, Cruise maintains at-home setup. it sounds live. “You’d never know in a million years if you weren’t a radio nerd.” Zoom Where It Happened: All three men “met” their team — an essential part to starting any job — without the ability to be in the same room as them. “I think the weirdest thing is coming into a place and the only way to meet your people is on a Zoom and Teams screen,” says Michaels. “I’ve realized how much I actually learned at previous jobs from watching other people in the office. You learn by assimilating with the whole crowd that’s there. Losing that means you’re on your own. It’s really different.” Adds Chase, “I have not come in human contact with anyone that I work with since I’ve started this job. It’s very unusual to work with these people every day and have never actually shaken their hand, given them a hug or been in a meeting in the same room. It hasn’t been bad, it’s just been really interesting.” While Cruise misses the “hallway vibes” of working in an office, he’s fully embraced his current situation. “I love working from home,” he admits. “It’s calm – not stressful at all. There’s none of that, ‘Where’s this prize form?’ I just do my show. It’s very stress-free.” Both Michaels and Chase join Cruise in missing the in-office connection and camaraderie but are finding new and creative solutions to the challenges presented. For Chase, that included virtually meeting his team, artists and radio programmers. “We did Gabby Barrett Zooms with radio partners for a week leading up to the release of her new single,” he recalls. “It ended up being really great, because my background is not primarily in country music. I was meeting a lot of the programmers for the first time.” Michaels strives to adopt new systems and find better practices in his newly-created role, stressing, “We have to find new ways to radio. We can’t not put Room At The Lap Top: out new content.” Michael Chase in his new Cruise and his team haven’t home office. yet figured out the phones, but he’s staying connected with listeners via posts and replies on the stations’ social media accounts. He reports it’s been all “positive feedback so far with no complaints,” although the similarity between his and afternoon personality DJ Tischner’s voices has produced a pretty hilarious conspiracy theory. “People think I’m his fake alter ego, and I’m not a real person.” Looking to the collective future of the industry, Michaels believes aspects of promotion previously seen as integral could become mostly unnecessary. “When we’re watching the bottom line, you ask, ‘Was a grown person actually needed to fly from their house all the way to a concert to grab another grown man or woman that they’ve known for 10 years, walk them 80ft. backstage, say hi to an artist, take two pictures and then go on your way?” Chase also views the current situation as an opportunity to “throw out the playbook” and get creative. “There are a lot of very exciting ideas floating around.
