Daniels Remembered:The Journey Home

Tributes from the country music community have poured in following the July 6 passing of Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels (CAT 7/6), with artists and radio and industry pros sharing how the “Long Haired Country Boy” both influenced and touched their lives and careers (see several here). The outspoken patriot and mentor gave as much to the causes he championed as he did to music, lending his time and talent to charitable organizations and events including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the T.J. Martell Foundation, Christmas 4 Kids, Volunteer Jam and The Journey Home Project — founded in 2014 with his manager, David Corlew, to help veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Blue Hat Records co-founder & manager David Corlew: I met Charlie in the early ‘70s when I worked at a record store and he’d come in to buy music. He came in one day looking for rental space to rehearse for a new record and a tour. It really wasn’t a tour at the time; they were primarily a club band. Ultimately, we became friends. He had the hit record, “Uneasy Rider,” and needed someone to drive a van and set up equipment on the road. I was one of the first roadies he hired … for $50/week and $5/ day per diem. I was 23 years old, and Charlie was 36, I believe. Fast forward to now, and I just had my 70th birthday, and Charlie was 83. I’ve literally spent my entire lifetime with him. I’ve had, literally, hundreds of conversations with people as we put together the service. People say, “You’ve been with him the longest, you know him better. You have the best friendship with him.” And you know what? It’s not true. Charlie handed his friendship to everyone on a tray. He gave (continued on page 10)

Cumulus KIZN/Boise APD/MD/morning host Alana Lynn and her dad – Community/Ogdensburg, NY OM Tony Lynn – discuss life as a father and daughter in the radio business. TL: I always knew Alana could be great on-air, but I didn’t know if she wanted to do it. In fact, when she was studying television, I really pushed her in that direction, because she was very good at it. And, because I know what it’s like to be bit by the radio bug. AL: It’s not an easy path, but I was lucky to watch my dad have a great career where he was able to be in markets for a long time. We were raised with a “marry the market” mentality. Dad worked hard for his community and in his community, and he was in the Albuquerque market for a lifetime. He did a good

A day in the self-isolated life of singer/songwriter Drew Baldridge: The pandemic has slowed me down a lot. I haven’t been off the road for this long in the last nine years. I got engaged right at the start of quarantine, so we are getting a real test to what marriage looks like. We do get on each other’s nerves from time to time … but that’s part of it. I don’t really have a routine down. The days have all been different — from Zoom writes to Zoom concerts. It has been nice to write from home and not have to rush off somewhere. This is the first year I planted a garden. I have tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers and kale. Growing up in the country, my family always had a big garden, so it was fun to go back to my small-town farming roots. Out of the whole garden, I’ve only had one strawberry so far though. Zoom writes have made it hard for me to be as creative as I’d like. I miss the human interaction of being in the same room together. But it’s been a good time for me to come up with

job shielding me from anything “bad” or transient about choosing radio, so I just saw it as a blessing to have the opportunity to play such a large part in people’s lives. TL: When Alana was just months old, my work schedule was opposite of my wife’s and I would have to bring Alana in to work with me for the last part of my shift. I was doing afternoons in Wilkes-Barre, PA at the time, and she would be in her car seat sleeping next to the reel-to-reel while I finished my last hour. AL: I guess I may have been making

new ideas and hooks. Honestly, I’ve never been more connected to my fans than I am right now. “Senior Year” is having a special impact at the moment, so I’ve been doing Zoom concerts for graduating classes around the country. I’ve played more than 60 of those concerts, and every one of them has been different and special in its own way. I’ve binged a lot! I’m in the middle of The Flash right now. I’ve always been a fan of superhero movies. My radio buddy [JVC Media Nassau VP/Country Programming] Phathead and I have been going back and forth sending each other shows to watch. I’m definitely putting on the quarantine fifteen. Anything pizza — pizza rolls or just pizza itself. I love being able to spend time with my fiancée and get some stuff done around the house, which was really needed. Also loving having the chance to get my body caught up on all the sleep it’s been missing from traveling through the night-playing gigs.

noise on air long before I realized, then. TL: I remember her first time on-air. I don’t think she was even five, and she cut a spot for me. It was a Christmas ad, and her line was, “Money is no object.” That continues to this day! Ha. AL: I remember that so well, and I remember being young and going to work with my dad. I loved stacking carts for him and growing up inside a radio station. I would also go to work with him and sleep under the board sometimes when he was doing mornings. TL: I always told her to just show up. That’s more than half the battle.

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of iHeartMedia Division EVP/Programming Maynard: The change in travel has been the biggest adjustment for me, as I used to travel multiple days a week for work. I’ve gone from a millionmiler to a zero-miler. My routine mainly looks the same as before, except without the airports and with 45 minutes of baseball built in. I wake up, start working, grab a Diet Coke, more work, have lunch, get another Diet Coke, finish work, have dinner, reach for another Diet Coke then squeeze in some baseball. There’s also been more latenight binge watching happening. It’s me, my wife, my son and daughter. For me, it has been amazing, but you’d have to ask my wife what she thinks. After four years on the road, it’s like making up for lost time, and I love being with them more. Working from home, I’ve mainly been using Microsoft Teams for calls. If I’m not on a Teams call, I’m monitoring radio stations. The most important thing we can do is listen to what is coming through the speakers, so even if I have to

schedule time to do that, it’s worth it for me. Programmatically, I’m not sure anything has changed for me. Some people are just better built for face-to-face ideation, and several members of our team are just more responsive when you are actually sitting in the room with them versus virtually. Other people perform better in the more lax virtual environment; it’s case by case. When 10 people are in a room, it feels like all 10 contribute, but with 10 people on Teams, not so much. Depending on the day, you can catch me on either side of that. My newest obsessions have been learning to play guitar and sitting around the fire pit. Other than that, I’ve spent a lot more time riding my motorcycle and Jeepin’. I’ve binged Ozark, Schitt’s Creek, Dark, Love Is Blind, Stumptown and I re-watched Lost ... I always loved that show. And, I can’t forget about Tiger King! My go-to snack is pimento cheese. And – you guessed it – Diet Coke. A more simplistic lifestyle and plenty of time for self-reflection and evaluation of

TL: In Albuquerque, Alana got hired in our promotions department. Shortly thereafter, we needed a female perspective on the air, and I suggested we bring her in. She got the gig, and she did a fantastic job on the air with us in mornings [at KBQI/ Albuquerque]. AL: We did that together for two years. I think he learned a lot about me – like how in my early 20s, I probably was staying out way too late to be doing a morning show the next day! When dad has to come pick you up to bring you into work, that’s a

problem! Ha. But, one of the things I appreciated about working alongside him is how much he cares about his craft. You might think that talent just walks in and does a show, but I don’t think I realized how much my dad cares about the craft, and about his listeners, until I worked alongside him every morning. And he still is constantly learning and evolving his craft each day. TL: Alana’s empathy for her listeners stands out to me. She loves her listeners, and she goes above and beyond for them. She knows how to ask great questions and get into people’s lives. And she’s a great listener. I’d hire her in a heartbeat. She is the best. AL: I’d hire him, too! If the opportunity came up again to work together, it would be interesting to pursue. Especially now that I’m

been around it for so long now – but I always look forward to discussing what’s going on in the business with Alana since she’s also in the thick of it. AL: I do think that if [my daughter] Addison decides she wants to go into radio, there will be tips I’ll want to give her, but I’m betting she will be just like me and won’t listen and will just pave her own path. And this is a fantastic industry to have the opportunity to carve your own path, so if that’s what she chooses to do, I just hope she serves with kindness. older and have a child of my own. That dynamic has changed me on-air, and he and I both have evolved in our styles since we last worked together. But we come from the same stock, so we are both very conversational on-air. You always want the person across from you to be someone you trust and who has the same work ethic you have, and I think that makes a family on-air team something very special. TL: I was lucky growing up that my parents, who were both blue collar workers, didn’t blink an eye when I said I wanted to do radio. And that’s the way I felt with my kids, too. If that’s your passion, go ahead and do it! Have fun. It’s absolutely wonderful having a daughter that speaks the same language. Alana and I talk all the time, and we talk about other shows, the trade, industry conventions and stories. The whole family “gets” it – my wife has

Daniels Remembered:The Journey Home (continued from page 1) it all. When he gave you his friendship, he gave his complete friendship. So, my tray was no different than anyone else’s. Everybody has their own Charlie Daniels story. Everybody has their own Charlie Daniels photograph. And everybody has their own special moment with him. That’s what makes him bigger than life … he has spread so much love and care. I’ve heard countless stories of people he’s helped that I had no idea, and I thought I was the closest guy to him. I thought I knew everything he did. I mean, Gretchen Wilson shared stories with me. And Travis Tritt. It’s their own relationship. It was their own phone call. It was their tough time. It was their struggle. That’s what Charlie has spent the last 50 years doing. He was a good and wonderful servant, not only to his Lord, but to his friends and family. What a way to end a career. His career has ended, but Charlie will live forever, and I’m so very grateful to have been a small part of that. SiriusXM’s Storme Warren: All my life, there’s always been Time Hop: Warren Hop: Warren (r) with Daniels. Charlie Daniels. From the time I was nine when his was the first album I ever spun on a turntable, to getting me my first job in Nashville to officiating his funeral, he’s been so impactful and helped me along the way. He also gave great advice: Efficient, one-sentence solutions to my too-long, overly explained questions.

I haven’t told this story before, but the best advice he ever gave me came when I was starting a TV show called Country Music Across America for the upstart network GAC, which was trying to compete with CMT. I was worried the network didn’t have enough eyeballs, and that CMT would see or hear about our show and do something similar – basically crush us like a bug. It was the only time to that point in my life I called Charlie for advice. I texted him and my phone rang 30 seconds later. “What you need, son?” First, you forget everything you were thinking when you hear that voice on the other end of the line. I finally got myself to the point of asking my question. How can I quietly but successfully build this show up enough that someone else doesn’t steal the idea and run with it? I went on about how I knew the idea was a good one, but we didn’t have the machine behind us a bigger network might. I probably went on for 20 minutes. When I finished, he said, “Son, that’s an easy one. Do it better.” Those three words echo in my head to this day. Whatever you’re doing, you’re almost guaranteed to win if you do it better. I’ve asked his advice a few other times and his replies were equally efficient and effective. Former Cumulus WIVK/Knoxville MD/midday personality Colleen Addair: I was friends with Charlie’s son, and in 1991, he invited me to ride with his parents, Charlie and Hazel, on their tour bus to the Grand Ole Opry. The entire bus ride, all Charlie Daniels talked to me about was Jesus. What he didn’t tell me is that I would also be going to Charlie’s class reunion with them! So, there I was, eating with all these people at a restaurant across from the Opry House and sharing chicken with Charlie Daniels. Afterwards, Charlie decided to load up everyone – classmates included – and take us all to the Opry that night. He had us seated in the pews onstage ... what a night; what a memory. Charlie was a patriot and loved this country, but nowhere near as much as he loved his Lord and Savior. I’m glad you are home, Charlie, but we’re going to miss you here. Industry vet Ron Huntsman: Charlie loved Christmas! He use to sit down every Christmas Eve and call each one of his band members, crew and staff to wish them a Merry Christmas. When the boss calls you on Christmas Eve, well, that’s priceless. He was one of a kind! CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis: When [the CRB] gave Charlie the Artist Career Achievement Award in 2008, we asked him if he would sing, and he said he would. But, he asked if instead of a long introduction, if we could just sit down and talk for a few minutes before he performed. So, instead of a long, drawn out video introduction or a bunch of people talking about him, he and I sat down on two stools and had a one-on-one interview about his career. It was a fantastic conversation, and it was a testament to the way he lived his life. After that, he picked up a guitar and gave everyone an acoustic performance. He was universally loved for a reason. Former WYCD/Detroit morning host and Country Radio Hall of Fame class of 2020 inductee Chuck Edwards: I first met Charlie in the mid ‘80s. After I moved to Dallas, I had a friend that I worked with who was a very good friend of his. We got to spend a lot of time on the bus with Charlie when he would do shows at Billy Bob’s Texas and other venues. Charlie actually remembered that I was a dipper, like he was. He had been a longtime endorser for Skoal and Happy Days, which was one of their brands. He actually thought enough of me when he came to town the next time that he actually brought me a case of Skoal. It was the wintergreen flavor, which I really didn’t use, but I gave it out to friends. That was just the kind of guy he was. He was very thoughtful. I never saw Charlie as a prima donna. I always saw him as a regular guy from Mt. Juliet, TN, that loved the Volunteers like I do. He was a regular person, but with extreme talent. CAC

Country radio shares were up 5.2 points (1.36%) compared to last month. Of the 88 stations listed, 45 saw share increases, 36 decreased and 7 were flat month-tomonth. Overall cume was up 2,879,300 (12.11%) compared to last month. The cume leader was Cumulus’ KPLX/Dallas with 921,700. Entercom’s WNSH/New York was second with 864,900. Versus June 2019 PPMs, radio shares were up 10 points (2.65%) year-over-year from last year’s 377 shares. Cume decreased from 34,365,500 to 26,647,000
