CMA Stays & (Re)Plays

As anyone who’s attended knows, there’s nothing quite like CMA Fest. Filling that social distancing-mandated void may be impossible, but last week’s CMA Summer Stay-Cay on YouTube and Facebook (7/1) and next week’s CMA Best of Fest on ABC (7/13) are taking a big swing at it. Between network television and social media, country music worked to entertain fans while keeping a subconscious summer place holder ... with a little help from radio. Understandably, the ABC special was the first consideration for Exec. Producer Robert Deaton. “When we looked at cancelling, Robert Deaton of course it was important to do something in our timeslot,” he says. “These tentpole events are something people are used to seeing, whether they are conscious of them or not. There’s an expectation of seeing the CMA Awards in November or the Oscars in February. Country fans know when the CMA Fest show airs on ABC.” Along with CMA CEO Sarah Trahern and members of the board’s TV committee, Deaton Sarah Trahern began brainstorming. “The first thing I did is watch every show going back to the beginning of the CMA Fest telecast,” he says. “It took three days, but I did it. I saw Maren Morris’ first performance on network television, Darius Rucker doing ‘Wagon Wheel’ and a 13-minute Garth Brooks medley. I saw the debut of Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus and Luke Combs’ first prime time network performance. Zac Justin Cole Brown Band doing ‘Chicken Fried.’ There were so many historic moments, so I asked, ‘What about a best-of?’ That’s where it started taking shape.” “When it was clear the festival was not going to happen, it became really important to keep country music out there with fans,” Trahern says. A day in the self-isolated life of Triple Tiger’s Russell Dickerson: I haven’t slept this many nights in a row in my own bed since college, I think. We’re obviously not touring, but being home with my wife while she’s pregnant has been amazing! We’ve loved waking up in our bed, going on walks every day and cooking together. I tried making myself a quarantine routine for one day … and hated it. Every day on the road is regimented by the hour, so I’m kind of loving making up each day as I go. My wife and I started taking tennis lessons, and we’re pumped about that! Quarantine has enhanced my ability to be creative. So much of my energy was put towards the road. Now, I’ve had time to let my mind rejuvenate. I’m excited about writing songs again.

I don’t remember ever not wanting to do radio, and I remember setting up the one station banner dad brought home and using it as a backdrop for my fake radio station while recording. Those tapes have been buried, never to be unearthed. JJ: My poor wife ... it scared the hell out of her. But, by the time he was four or five, I had Alek on-air. WBFM/Sheboygan, WI had Alek David’s Joke Of The Day. He’d start his little break with signature intro, “Hi ya, buddy!” We kept it going [at WDEZ/Wausau, WI and WNCY/Green Bay], and it was a regular benchmark.

Going live has helped me keep a connection with fans. It’s great to keep up with everyone, play them some new songs off my new record and get them pumped on it. My wife and I fall asleep to New Girl pretty much every night in bed. My go-to quarantine snack is Virginia Peanuts. I’ve gone through buckets of those things. I got my neighbors hooked on them, too. A cold Corona (beer, not virus) and some peanuts. I honestly wouldn’t trade this time I’ve had at home while my wife has been growing this baby for anything. It has been the biggest blessing to prepare for parenthood. Otherwise, we would have been so busy touring that when this baby got here, we’d just be like, “Wow, well here we go …”

AH: I remember going out on stage with dad to introduce Tim McGraw when I was six. Thousands of people cheered for me; I was sold. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. JJ: I encouraged him, but I was probably also harder on him than on anyone else. I knew he had talent and ability, but I also knew he would have to work harder to prove himself so that people didn’t assume he just got jobs because of his dad. AH: There’s no probably about it; he was definitely hard on me. I got a job in promotions [at KVOX/Fargo, ND] when I was 17; he was doing mornings. I didn’t get away with slacking on anything, but I also got a lot more experience because of the extra work. JJ: I pushed him hard, and he eventually got weekend on-air work. When I got here [to KTLA] and was PD/mornings, they were looking for an

afternoon guy. At that point, I knew I could recommend him for the gig, and it would be without hesitation and with no one thinking it was because he was my kid. Everyone saw how hard Alek worked, the extra hours he spent on his craft and the talent he had. The fact that he was my son became secondary. AH: That was the second station where we had been working together, and the dynamic was definitely different. I Like It, I Love It: Halverson (r) helps James welcome Tim McGraw to the stage. My dad is great at what he does, and I was able to watch and learn from him firsthand, but I was also given the opportunity to be my own person and develop my own path. I eventually added APD and MD duties, so we worked together even more closely. JJ: There’s a different feeling when you’re a father who also happens to be your son’s boss. I had to make it very clear that he wasn’t getting preferential treatment, and I would sometimes have to say, “Alek, would you be asking me for this if I wasn’t your dad?” It didn’t happen often, but we were careful to make sure everyone knew he was earning everything he got. My advice was always work a little harder than the next guy and keep your mouth shut. Do the exact opposite of what I did! You don’t have to say everything you think all the time. Oh, and get everything in writing! AH: And win in the hallways. Dad taught me that. The things I’ve learned just watching him are endless. I can’t pretend that he’s not my dad, so it was interesting if we had to have heated

discussions about something happening at the station. But we found a great balance. JJ: He adapted well from an early age. Alek went to three different high schools and was always more mature than kids his age. AH: I actually just called him the other day to discuss PPM Weeklies. It really is a family business. Once you move out of the house, you may not see your family as much, but I still got to go to work every day and see my dad! JJ: I’d encourage family members to work together, but know that you have to work harder. Don’t do your kids any favors, because it won’t help them in the long run. AH: I’d also encourage family to work together, but maybe dad could go a little easier, because I promise the kids really are working hard. Reach Halverson here and James here. –Monta Vaden

“In talking with artist managers, doing another living room concert for a big network show didn’t make sense. When Robert came in with the idea, ABC said yes right away. Considering the option to do two hours or three, after looking at the performances, the network was in for three.” With Capitol’s Luke Bryan hosting, assembling the highlight reel commenced. “The best performances leap out at you,” Deaton says. “Last year’s Carrie Underwood and Joan Jett performance – I knew that was special. Likewise, Dwight Yoakam and Dierks Bentley. Because some artists have done the show eight, nine or 10 times and the same song more than once, you realize there

was that one performance where it was magic between the artist, band, audience and crew. They just jump out. “Once I went through and figured out the show, I sent the selected performance to each manager for approval,” he continues. “There are 29 in the show and figured I’d get questions about looking at another performance or year, but we got none of that. Within about four or five days, everyone emailed back, and we were locked and loaded. It was a great process.” “We could have cut two three-hour shows,” Trahern adds. “Some great performances ended up on the cutting room floor and probably disappointed some artists and their fans. It made us ask, ‘Should we create a series?’ I’d love for it to be a staple, even in non-COVID years. Maybe do another best-of in five years.” She also notes some technical constraints. “We didn’t pull a lot from the early years of the show, because it was shot in a different format, and we wanted this to look and sound the best it can.” Stay A Little Longer: The four-hour Summer Stay-Cay hosted by Jimmie Allen and Lindsay Ell was born of seeking Fan Fair-style engagement with fans. “We discussed doing something digitally every night of CMA Fest,” Trahern says. “Someone pointed out you can’t replicate how strong that brand is with 300 artists on 11 stages. The CMA team pivoted and developed the idea, which ended up with more than 50 acts [over four hours].” Some performances were submitted, and others were taped on location with a small crew in controlled settings. “While StayCay can’t capture that live concert energy, it has an intimacy and shows how hungry artists are to interact with fans,” Trahern says.

A day in the self-isolated lives of Big Loud VP/Promotion Stacy Blythe and Dir./Southeast Promotion Tyler Waugh: SB: We definitely have more time in the day without dealing with drop-offs and pickups. We’ve had more time for self-care measures like working out and morning coffee. TW: On the best days, I shower and wear clothing that isn’t sweatpants and an old t-shirt. Aside from finding something to keep our daughter Frankie occupied, I try to get work done and not get in the way of Stacy while she does the same. SB: Before Frankie was born, we tried to travel at the same time so we could have time together at home. With Frankie in the mix, we’ve been traveling opposite each other and were ships passing in the night. Now, we are working every day in the same room, and it’s been great. He may say differently, though, since his boss is sitting and listening to his calls. TW: Surprisingly, we don’t drive each other crazy! We’ve learned to balance our workday and after work time. We take turns making sure Frankie is occupied and ensure we both have proper time to get our work done. I enjoy being with my wife all day every day. Looks like this marriage thing may just work out! Ha! SB: Being productive is a challenge with a three-year-old around, so quarantine has forced creativity in our daily approach. Maybe we should start making her make some music calls…? TW: Quarantine has enhanced creativity out of necessity to come up with new and exciting ways to promote my artists to radio while being confined to a kitchen table and laptop. On the flip side, I have felt less productive, which is odd because my results are still there – new adds, airplay and song conversions – but days fly by.

SB: When you’re married and also work together, you need constant, open communication about each other’s happiness. In the rare occurrence that he does something annoying, I video him in the act and play it back for him so he can see it from my point of view, and we end up laughing about it. TW: There is a mutual respect for each other’s personal space and allowing time to do whatever it is we need to get our mind off things and unwind. For me, that’s being able to go to the basement and get a daily workout in or get outside and mow the lawn. Those two activities are therapeutic for me. Acknowledging personal space and personal time without being told is also crucial. And, picking up any mess you make and taking time to do something nice or thoughtful for your spouse helps. SB: We got a puppy, Indie, in April, and that has been our full-time hobby. I also have a new hobby of seeing how long I can keep flowers alive in our landscaping … so far, so good. And I love sitting down at night watching mindless TV like Selling Sunset. TW: I’ve started using my smart TV to watch shows and have made it through Tiger King – which seems like so long ago now – as well as The Last Dance and Selling Sunset. I also discovered a couple YouTube channels that post ghost videos each week and binged those to scare the crap out of myself. Boo! SB: The go-to snack has been Cheetos. We have eaten so many Cheetos! TW: And popcorn almost every night. I’ve also started eating ice cream again, specifically Baskin Robbins’ Pralines & Cream or Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Now you see why I have to work out every day.

“We wanted to tie these brands together and make it exciting for the fans,” she says. “Throughout the live stream we were driving people to the Best Of show. We also had a contest through the CMA Music Fest app to win tickets to next year’s event in June.” The digital show may foreshadow more work in the space. “Television is where I cut my teeth, and I can talk about that platform all day and night, but I’m also eager to see the tentacles of Stay-Cay reaching into the UK, Germany, Australia and other international territories,” Trahern says. “It’s a toe in the water of what will be huge digital opportunities down the road while we are still glad to have a big network deal for CMA Fest.” Radio was heavily involved with Stay-Cay segments featuring Bobby Bones, Cody Alan and Elaina Smith. Radio Disney Country and Townsquare’s Taste Of Country also hosted segments, with WUSY/Chattanooga’s Styckman and Justin Cole hosting a 30-minute pre-show. “With everything going on right now, it was an amazing opportunity for fans to still engage with artists, which is a big part of what makes this format special,” Cole says. “Keeping some semblance of that and building those relationships is paramount.” As the pre-show aired, Cole watched himself learning on the fly. “[Styckman’s afternoon co-host] Mo is eight months pregnant and

Quaran-Team: Tyler, Frankie, Stacy and Indie SB: This is the longest I’ve gone without traveling in 15 years. Not having to say goodbye once a week and counting sleeps until we see each other again is something I am not taking for granted. If there is something I look forward to doing without Tyler, though, it would be a girls’ night out dinner. TW: This is quality time I didn’t know I needed and didn’t know I was missing. When everything is back to normal, it’s going to be tough to not hear my daughter being funny in the background and not being able to walk over to Stacy and give her a quick kiss and hug between work calls and emails. I can’t wait to go to a concert, though, and I look forward to interacting with friends and strangers, but we will probably go to that first show together. March 12 was the last time for me.” Reaction from viewers/listeners has been positive. “We all know what risks we face and the challenges in the world right now, and the sentiment I get from listeners is they’re tired of hearing about it at all time,” Cole says. “So, it’s nice to be able to give them that escape. Here’s some positivity! I applaud CMA for keeping that element of what the organization does for fans alive in some way this summer.” One Last Thing: If the Stay-Cay and Best Of highlights don’t stoke passion for the return of country concerts, the ABC show’s solitary new performance might. “Luke Bryan and Darius Rucker are doing John Mellencamp’s ‘Small Town’ with full band,” Deaton says. “Everyone is socially distanced on the football field. A couple things happened there. One, it was so nice seeing a performance with a real band again. People actually playing guitars and drums. Wow. Then, you look around and see 50,000 empty seats and think, ‘I’ll never take this for granted again.’” –Chuck Aly CAC
