Play It Again Skips Ahead

Plans for artist management and record label expansion – led by the addition of CEO Ryan Dokke – prove publishing wasn›t going to be enough for Play It Again founder Dallas Davidson. In fact, the company’s existence shows even an absurdly successful songwriting career wasn’t going to contain his passion for country music. Instead, Davidson and company have set their sights on fast forwarding the development process and pressing repeat on his success with a new generation of artists and writers. “As a writer, I’ve had some great publishers, but I also saw things I would do differently, so I started my own company,” Davidson says of PIA’s 2015 origin. Opening his own shop doesn’t seem like much of a gamble when even a partial listing of his credits is heady stuff: “All About Tonight,” “Gimmie That Girl,” “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away,” “Just A Kiss,” “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight,” “That’s How Dokke and Davidson Country Boys Roll” and more than a half-dozen Luke Bryan No. 1s including, of course, “Play It Again.” Davidson wasn’t interested in resting on laurels, however. “I’m not 21 anymore, and what’s going to keep me current is surrounding myself with young kids,” he says. “As a writer first, but also from the standpoint of helping people the way I was helped. We opened and ran Play It Again in a commonsense fashion and started having success – adding writers and getting a vision of greater things. There’s a lot more I want to give to the music.” Team Building Exercise: Enter Dokke, who left a six-year run with Curb in April. “I was looking for a boss – a CEO,” Davidson says. “We went through some changes at the publishing company and never really had the right fit to take that load off of me so I could focus on writing songs. Finding someone with experience like Ryan’s – radio, promotion, running Curb – I’m tickled I even got him on board.” (continued on page 9)

A day in the self-isolated life of singer/songwriter Cassadee Pope: I haven’t been home this long since I was 18, so getting used to the idea of not having to cram stuff in has been strange. I’m trying to lean into the freedom of deciding whether to be super productive one day … or maybe super lazy the next. My boyfriend and I live together, and this is by far the longest time we’ve spent together! We bought a house last November but didn’t really get to be in it at the same time for very long because of my touring and his filming. This has been what I like to call “living together boot camp.” It’s been awesome … and an adjustment, for sure. We’ve managed to find a groove and respect each other’s space. We both find it important to have some alone time here and there, and that helps to not want to kill each other. I love mowing the lawn. I used to ride the tractor in Pennsylvania (where my mom is from) every summer and always found it to be so relaxing. So, now I mow our lawn every week basically, and it’s nice. At the beginning, quarantine definitely hindered my creativity, because it was such a jolt from what I

was used to. I didn’t know how Zoom sessions would even work. But after two weeks of realizing this thing wasn’t going away any time soon, I had to start creating or I’d get myself into a serious slump. I was craving writing by that point and, to my delight, I’ve gotten some of my favorite songs from these Zoom writes. Going live has been such a great tool for me to stay connected with fans. Obviously, I prefer an in-person connection more, but I’m grateful for the platforms that allow me to still play for an audience. I’ve also been doing virtual meet-and-greets on Looped, which feels even more immersive for the fans than the lives. I’ve enjoyed those so much, because I get to actually hear how everyone’s doing and see their surroundings instead of playing for clap emojis! So far, I’ve binged The Morning Show, Love Is Blind, Tiger King and See. Next up is Ozark. My boyfriend and I have to have a bag of Sweet Spicy Chili Doritos in the pantry at all times. If we don’t, we feel lost. I’ve loved being with my boyfriend so much, and it has really

and attend a midnight showing at the Parkway Drive-In Theater in Maryville, TN, just four miles from where I graduated high school. This is what I experienced and saw during the show. First of all, the midnight showing was the only one available in Maryville, but a majority of the participating locations started with a showing at dusk; some added a second showing due to demand. For $100 per car, fans could bring in as many people as had seatbelts, with a maximum of six per car. Despite the late start, by the time I parked at 11:30pm ET – in my pajamas with snacks at the ready – families and couples had set up picnics, cornhole boards, lawn chairs and blankets as far as the eye could see. Parkway maxed out its 400-car capacity, with attendees were asked to keep festivities within their provided space and wear masks if moving about the venue. To my left a family of five brought Sonic burger meals and purchased buckets of popcorn from the concession stand. To my right, a date night couple sported a sundress and boots next to a pearl snap and cowboy hat. Other couples, groups and at least five dogs were within my line of sight. camera and audience. Between songs, clips were shown from previous tour stops, invoking the energy and crowd reaction of packed stadiums. Clips of cars honking and flashing their headlights encouraged in-person attendees to do the same. Brooks and band worked the stage as if they were playing in person. The entire production felt very much like an elevated livestream with all the pizzazz of a live arena experience. From the opening “Ain’t Goin’ Down ‘Til The Sun Comes Up” to signature closing “The Dance,” fans at Parkway were singing, dancing, waving cellphone lights and cheering as if Brooks was there. “I was at the show in [The University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s] Neyland [Stadium], but our seats were so far away, I just watched the screen the whole night anyway,” a mother in the car behind me shared. “At least this way we could bring our own food and our dog, and we didn’t have to pay $500 for the whole family.” I gave her kids sprinkled donuts and nodded in agreement. Speaking of Neyland, twice during the show, Brooks utilized shots from the Nov. 16 concert to uproarious applause. “Ain’t it crazy that we were in Neyland less than a year ago, and now we can actually see him here in our little town?” mused the husband in the car behind me. That seemed to be the draw for many, who were excited not only to get out of the house and spend an evening listening to “live” music, but the ability to do so in small, rural towns – the typical home of such venues – where they could simultaneously offer support to local businesses. Brooks doubled down on fan connection via social media – tweeting pre-show, responding to fans’ photos and tweets during, and taking to Facebook Live for virtual reality “housekeeping” in each time zone. Those who brought signs for requests were rewarded with acoustic performances for Eastern, Central and Pacific time zones. Brooks even offered to fly one fan to a show once touring resumes. In the meantime, how this affects stop-gap concert efforts remains to be seen. The next scheduled drive-in shows will feature in-person stage performances from Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Jon Pardi produced by Live Nation (CAT 6/22). But, as Brooks shared, “Watching people all night from coast to coast, in Canada and here in the U.S., laughing, dancing and singing made me smile. It reminded me how much I miss the crazy, happy and unpredictable life we lead as entertainers. For one night, things seemed…right.” Indeed, for those in Maryville, TN, they did. And I wasn’t mad about seeing a show in pajamas while eating local-fave donuts in my car. –Monta Vaden

Dokke cites Davidson’s drive and work ethic as an indication of their fit. “Dallas has incredible vision for how to support artists and songwriters,” he says. “We’ll do calls as early as 6:30am and still be talking at 9:30 or 10pm. He never stops, which is also how I work. That was so appealing to me.” The addition of Dokke brings the staff count to six; the writer roster stands at seven. Davidson, of course, is on both lists. “We’re small and scrappy,” Dokke says. “We’ll begin hiring soon, but we’re not down the road yet on putting together a promotion team. First and foremost, we’re focused on serving our writers and artists so they can make great music. If something lends itself toward being a radio single, we’ll explore a partnership or pull the trigger on building our own team. But it’s too early to say which path we’ll take first. “We are building and scaling in that direction,” Dokke continues. “On the front end, it may be about figuring out who we can build great partnerships with, knowing the long-term goal is to grow our own marketing and promotion team.” Pitch Count: First out of the gate will be Walker Montgomery – son of John Michael and nephew of Eddie. “We’re cutting four or five songs and will start putting out music and Walker reaching out to potential partners to work with Montgomery on it,” Dokke says. A&R isn’t so much a department as an overall mindset. “We will work hand-in-hand on that,” Davidson says. “I’ve helped a lot of my dear friends pick songs for albums. I’ve been A&R-ing records for about 15 Dylan Marlowe years without my name on it, so I’m pretty dialed in. It starts with Walker – finding the direction and songs that fit it. Ryan knows radio and has been on the label side, so if I’m scratching my head, he may have the answer. We want to take into consideration what the PIA team thinks, too. Cade Price is from that younger generation and hipper than me. Erin Kidd is running the publishing side. We’re putting together the ‘95 Braves here and will take all input to make the best decisions for our artists.” Adds Dokke, “One of the things we talked a lot about was the balance between being very hands-on while working with artists who know who they are. Dallas and I share that mentality. We sign and work with talented artists who know where they want to go, then we go to work amplifying that. “We want to be an epicenter for creativity – whether it’s artists or writers looking for a first deal or wanting to build something new after coming out of a deal,” Dokke continues. “A lot of companies operate in silos, but we’re fortunate to not be built that way. And that all starts with Dallas and his passion, energy and drive.” “The idea is to take our artists and writers and help them skip some steps,” Davidson says. “I’m going to write with the artists and bring in my A-list friends to write with them, too. That will help us get to the top of the charts faster. And with streaming, a small guy can do big things.
