Radio Reacts To ACM: Our Country

In a world of coronavirus and social distancing, the Academy of Country Music and Dick Clark Productions were forced to postpone the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards until September (CAT 3/16) but embraced the opportunity to debut an at-home special, ACM Presents: Our Country last night (4/5) at 8pm ET on CBS (CAT 3/19). Country programmers and personalities were tuned in and shared their thoughts with Country Aircheck following the broadcast. iHeartMedia KSD/St. Louis APD/MD/afternoon personality Dusty Panhorst: “I’m a huge fan of stripped down, acoustic performances, and I loved how each artist did more than just performing a song. They spoke from their heart and helped us forget about everything for a little bit; we all needed that. Charles [Kelley] and Dave [Haywood of Lady Antebellum] with their kids jumping in the video was a favorite moment for me, because that is all of us right now. Luke Combs was amazing, as were Old Dominion, Eric Church Dusty Panhorst and the Kenny Rogers tribute. But for a stand out performance, I have to give it to Kane Brown and John Legend or Tim McGraw. They really stuck with me.” Summit KFDI/Wichita APD/MD/midday personality Carol Hughes: “I got all dressed up and even changed sweatpants for the occasion and watched with my very senior dog and even more senior cat. But, I really wish I had watched with a horse. Seeing Shania singing to her horse tonight was either the best thing on the show or the weirdest, and I honestly can’t decide. Obviously, with it being Palm Sunday, I was most excited about Church. Who am I kidding? Knowing he was going to sing a new song was the highlight of my Carol Hughes weekend, and it did not disappoint. Honestly, the show didn’t need Gayle King. Her comments fell flat ... they could have thrown it to each other and it would have been more effective. (continued on page 9)

... BR AN DO N RATC LI FF A day in the self-isolated life of of a new artist with Monument/ Columbia’s Brandon Ratcliff. Every morning I get up, have coffee or peppermint tea with my wife and make a checklist for the day. I stopped going anywhere March 14, so I’m definitely starting to go a little stir crazy, but I’m also really trying to be productive. I walk or drive every day just to get out. I like to do a little workout and have been doing a ton of yoga lately. And I’ve been easing into the Wim Hof method, which is basically about breathing, meditation and the power of cold showers or ice baths, which I did today. I have a love-hate relationship with it. Being in that bath is so painful, but it makes me feel so energized afterward. His app is awesome if anyone is interested. The rest of the day is reading – I’m on Love Does by Bob Goff – playing guitar and writing songs. I’m doing a few virtual writes here and there. Then I’ll play some Xbox until my wife gets home. She nannies for a family we are close with, and they’re the only people we see and vice versa, so her day feel feels relatively normal. I went to their house yesterday and hung out with all of them, which was the first day in three weeks that seemed like before all this. Right now I’m in the middle of my Uncovered project, which is three songs that show my influences and will segue into

Thank God we have the technology to see and communicate with each other, but I’m so passionate about songwriting and feeling that vibe in the room. You just don’t get that virtually. It’s like fighting with one hand tied behind your back.

Off The Record: Avenue Beat Avenue Beat’s Sam Backoff, Savana Santos and Sami Bearden put an industry spin on the artist interview: Bearden: We grew up listening to our hometown station, KICK/QuincyHannibal, IL-MO. Hearing ourselves on the radio Avenue Beat actually hasn’t happened yet. I imagine one of us will hear, call the other two while babbling incoherently and cry like babies! Favorite radio tour memory so far is rolling into Boston late and going for pizza and cannolis in North End. It was heaven. Our favorite road companion is our manager Charly Salvatore, because he always picks the best podcasts. Santos: Every time we’re in a truck stop, we get one of those cookies ‘n’ cream milkshakes from those “mix it yourself” things. If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it’d be Kacey Musgraves. She’s the dopest person to ever exist. I would probably order a classic lil’ burger with fries. Our song “Ruin That For Me” is about not letting your ex ruin your life. My last impulse buy was sour skittles, but then I realized that I don’t like sour candy. So, waste of an impulse buy! Backoff: Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” is seriously the best country song of all time, and I stand by that. Every time we go on a really long road trip and start to get sleepy, it’s the song that hypes us back up. We’re screamsinging every word at the top of our lungs. How can you not, though? It’s simply iconic. Road essentials are definitely our headphones, so when Sami starts listening to a weird podcast about the Loch Ness Monster, we can each plug in and tap out. I think I’d want to be stuck in Malibu so I could go to the . beach, eat a taco and live my best life. I’m currently obsessed with Love Is Blind on Netflix. It gives me anxiety, but I love it. I live for the drama.

“We started kind of grassroots trying to help a couple stations desperate for content once California locked down,” explains Triple Tigers Dir./National Promotion Raffaella Braun. “Radio didn’t have shows, and we talked internally, including with Scotty’s manager [Triple 8’s] Scott Stem. His background is publicity and he said, ‘This is interesting. If you can give me 24 hours notice, we’ll loop people in and publicize on socials with a link to the radio station’s site.’” For the week of March 23, McCreery did shows for WUSH and WGH/Norfolk, WRNS/ Greenville, KNCI/Sacramento, KWJJ/Portland, WGNA/Albany and WQDR/Raleigh, reaching aggregate viewership exceeding 472,000. Scotty McCreery “Scotty’s loyal fanbase meant valueadded eyes and ears for the stations,” Braun says. “We made this a national situation in spreading the love separately and locally. Management’s help and us having a smaller staff made it easier to mobilize this quickly to meet two needs with this cataclysmic event. There was a lot of trial and error with technology, getting time zone messaging Raffaella Braun consistent and trying to get it up, running and starting on time. But even if we were late off the cue, it was worth it and paid dividends for radio because his audience has been rabid ever since the American Idol days.” Be The Why: The Pensacola area wasn’t the first to have the community show up in droves at hospitals to shine car lights and cheer for healthcare workers from parking lots, but WYCT’s participation shows the power and flexibility of radio. PD/morning host Brent Lane saw the concept on social media. “Somebody posted a video of something similar in another town,” Lane says. “Someone tagged me in a comment and said, ‘It would be great to do this here.’ That was on Sunday night (3/29). By noon the next day we put it on the radio and by 6pm had hundreds of cars at seven different hospitals around the area.” The station invited a local pastor to pray for hospital workers on the air, followed by Thomas Rhett’s “Be A Light” and George Strait’s “I Saw God Today.” An email arrived the next day from a local RN who, understandably, has been anxious in her job and personal life. “I’ve been scared, sad, upset, nervous and downright mad,” Meagan wrote. “Yesterday was a day I had to talk myself down the whole way to work about how I and my team are doing what we can to help our communities and those in need. I had to try to remind myself why I became a nurse. Then I

This needs to become ‘a thing.’ Getting to hear the artists in a way that is not typical in concert or on the radio made some of my friends, who are already fans, love them even more and find new appreciation for artists outside their general taste. During Shania Twain’s Fletcher Brown performance, I thought the horse was going to eat her guitar. But, can we talk about Carrie Underwood with the glass of wine? How many ladies got up and poured a glass after seeing her? I love that, as an industry, we are trying to adapt and move forward in the face of opposition. Before Lady Antebellum sang from different locations, Hillary Scott said, ‘We are all just doing the best we can,’ and I really felt that. The show felt like a bunch of friends hanging out while the really talented friends shared some uplifting songs. It was Aaronee Cottam less scripted, real and raw like the stuff you only get from performers when you find a good interview online. The landscape is changing, and we crave real connection.
