CRS Dive: Mark Ramsey Pt. 2

Last week, CRS 2020 research presenter Mark Ramsey explained the importance in diverging thoughts between programmers and listeners, the problem with radio’s silo and the lack of evidence for PD bias against female music (CAW 3/9). In today’s second installment, Ramsey addresses the limitations of localism, country-pop collaborations and what boots-on-the-ground radio pros can do about industry problems. Admitting it was controversial as you said it, the idea that being local doesn’t matter to listeners was one of your key points. But even if a national personality might be just as well-received on air, aren’t there benefits to having a local personality who can be out in the community Mark Ramsey and connecting with clients? What I’m saying relative to that is proven. We say this like it’s theoretical fact that doesn’t need to exist in practice. The fact we have a mailing address in the community makes us important. Says who? What are you doing with the fact you’re local that makes you important? “Well, we’re out in the community. We’re at events, fundraisers, concerts, clubs and the Elks lounge.” Where’s the evidence that those efforts are more important than others you could undertake with that time? Like, say, playing a song. Provide the evidence, that’s all. People say, “We’re live and local, and they’re not.” When you turn on TV tonight, almost none of what you see is going to be live and local. And yet, it’s compelling isn’t it? There are formats that are more music intensive than Country radio, that don’t do as much in the community. People who have music services still sometimes turn on the radio. This is all anecdotal ... but there has to be some sound reasoning behind decades of broadcasting conventional wisdom, right? (continued on page 7)

With many companies encouraging employees to work from home, producing quality on-air content remotely is a top concern. In addition to previously detailed resources for radio (CAT 3/13), Country Aircheck spoke to a few folks with at-home setups for tips and tricks on putting together a configuration that will work right now ... or for the long run. and provides a nice connection back to a studio from home,” he says. “If you’re a jock just doing tracking, it’s best to get a mic like the Rode NT1A and a Behringer USB interface. You’re in for about $300 and can get great, clean audio back to whoever may need it, and there’s no need for a mixer in that situation. For PDs or anyone who may want or need something a bit more, I still recommend an NT1A along with a second processor. I have one that’s matched to my home studio, and it’s a worthy investment with a low cost of entry.” Cherry Creek KIYK & KCIN/St. George, UT PD Aaronee Cottam called in a pro to help with her at-home system. “Our engineer set up an FTP to pull coded audio into specific tracks for each break, and I upload it to our FTP site,” she explains. “It works well with my Aaronee RE320 mic and DBX286S processor. I also Cottam still use Adobe 1.5 and have a friend from the local university help me fine-tune my processing. All-in, I spent around $450, but I already had the station software on my personal computer.” iHeartMedia KSSN/Little Rock, AR APD/midday personality Jess Jennings has also created an at-home system. “I’m using an MXL 990 condenser microphone with Shockmount, which runs about $70 at MusicFriend.com,” she says. “I use the Behringer MINIMIC Mic800 Ultra-Compact microphone modeling preamp, which I got from BHPhotoVideo.com, and I run Audition on a standard HP laptop I got from Sam’s Club. To upload audio to the station, I’ve used DropBox, an FTP or emailed them into a cart Jess Jennings via VPN. My studio takes up a small corner of

a room in my home – not a lot of space at all – and I have foam on the walls in the corner. A closet is a great option, too, as the clothes help deaden the sound.” If you’re looking for a something fullservice, nationally syndicated The Big Time With Whitney Allen host Whitney Allen offers her feedback. “I’m in a semi-rural area, and there have been a few times I’ve been unable to get out of my neighborhood due to flooding; the 2019 Woolsey Fire and road blockages took it to a new level, as Whitney Allen I couldn’t leave our restricted area,” says Allen, who now works with a full “backup studio” in her home. “I can connect to our main studio from my house using a Comrex BRIC-Link. To record and edit my own breaks, phone calls and contests, I use a VoxPro, and I have an ElectroVoice RE-20 mic that runs through a Symetrix 528E Voice Processor to match the sound in the studio. I also have a Telos hybrid to record phone calls into the VoxPro. Once I pre-record tracks or edit calls at home, I upload the finished audio files to an FTP site, and they are then downloaded in the studio. The show can be done very, very close to real time, with just a few minutes of delay. All we need is electricity and an internet connection to produce a show.” Whether you’re putting together an at-home studio on the fly or have the resources for a complete build-out, there is a solution available. Many systems, including Zetta, NexGen and Wide Orbit, offer desktop and even smartphone applications to make on-the-go radio an easier proposition. I love everything about her and this album. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I couldn’t tell you one single Bob Dylan song, but I do know he was in the “We Are The World” video on MTV. • An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: While I appreciate all genres of music, I couldn’t get into punk rock. I’ll take Gregorian Chant over punk rock all day long. • An album you listened to incessantly: Jordan Davis’ Home State. It’s one of those rare albums where you love every song and can hear all of them as radio singles. Hard to do nowadays. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Patrick Droney’s “Brooklyn.” Look him up. Then buy everything he’s ever put out. Incredible raw talent. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m a huge Alter Bridge fan. Their album/single “Blackbird” is phenomenal, if you enjoy melodic prog rock driven by two exceptional front men in Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti.

Congratulations to Kane Brown, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese and the RCA promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Homesick” for a second consecutive week. The song is the third single from Brown’s second major-label album, Experiment, and is his fifth career No. 1. Songwriters are Kane Brown Brock Berryhill, Matt McGinn, Taylor Phillips and Brown. And kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew on notching 39 adds for Jon Pardi’s “Ain’t Always The Cowboy” topping this week’s board.

Booked Report: KRYS Stapleton

Mercury’s Chris Stapleton may have postponed his AllAmerican Road Show as social distancing owns the moment (CAT 3/12), but iHeartMedia KRYS/Corpus Christi, TX PD/morning man “Big Frank” Edwards was lucky enough to catch the final show before the hiatus. He tells Country Aircheck what took place March 11, and what to expect when the All-American Road Show resumes. (Keep track of rescheduled dates here.) “The stage configuration was really cool with a screen directly over the top that ran the full width,” says Edwards. “They worked in some cool camera angles during the show, Big Frank and the stage had a mirror ball in the middle, which looked great.” After sets from opening acts Yola and Jamey Johnson – whose “In Color” and “Give It Away” earned massive audience reactions – Stapleton opened with an instrumental version of “The Star Spangled Banner.” “I hope that isn’t a top-secret deal, but it was definitely one way to get us all on our feet!” says Edwards. Stapleton and his band, joined by wife Morgane Stapleton, then worked through the setlist, featuring radio singles and album cuts including “Nobody To Blame,” “Millionaire” and “Traveller.” “Some of the biggest moments, though, were exactly what you’d expect,” notes Edwards. “The crowd reaction for ‘Broken Halos’ was big, and my gosh, ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ was huge. There was also a big reaction when Chris and Morgane sang ‘You Are My Sunshine’ together.” While “Tennessee Whiskey” was the final song before the encore, Stapleton officially ended the show with “Outlaw State Of Mind.”

“Who knew it would be the last big show for a while,” remarks Edwards. “Our grand prize winner told me this was the third concert she had ever been to, and she’s roughly my age. It reminded me we’re blessed to do what we do, and sometimes we forget and take those things for granted.” And, as much of the industry heads into a new territory of quarantines and working from home while tours take a break from the road, Edwards offers this final sentiment: “May the God of your choice bless you. We addressed why listeners specifically use radio over socalled playlist services. Some of it has more to do with where the listener was than anything else. That’s a really weak differentiator. It’s temporary and volatile. I’ve been doing these studies for 20plus years. We used to say, “Radio’s got a big lead in these areas – habit, ubiquity, ease of use – big lead.” The services were hard. You had to work at using Spotify. Well, Spotify has spent 10 years making it easier. Pandora, too. They’ve all gotten more radio-like, more passive-friendly. Meanwhile, radio has remained largely the same. That’s really problematic, and we need to fess up to that. That’s one of the reasons everyone’s charging into podcast land. It’s an area that’s growing. Although in your study PDs thought listeners were rushing to use podcasts, but the percentage of listeners who actually do is tiny. Remember, these are Country listeners, not NPR listeners. It’s fair to say that just as a lot of the juice from radio is going to YouTube, Netflix and video games, a lot of it will go to podcasts. It’s primarily younger people who want non-music entertainment who are going to podcasts. Country radio fans, by definition, are not those. You took issue with radio still playing the ratings game when ad-supported DSPs don’t, but the tech

companies have bottomless wells of digital data. As limited as Nielsen may be, what else does radio have? Once upon a time, Clear Channel, could have purchased Pandora and it elected not to. Ten years ago, Netflix was a DVD rental service. Some of this involves vision and taking bets on the future, rather than scrambling after the fact or believing this will all pass. True, DSPs have a different business model and aren’t programming to Nielsen. That’s why one of the things I said is, “You’ve got to get beyond the ‘radio’ business.” Makes sense on a macro level, but if I’m programming a station in Boise, what do I do with that? Good point. It’s a bigger problem for the person who owns the company that hires the PD in Boise. But it’s got to come from somewhere and that begins on that CRS stage in Nashville and with the ears in that room. The owners and managers of these radio companies, in many cases, came up through the ranks or they’re just people looking for a return on investment. Either way, change is needed. Once upon a time, Amazon was the world’s largest bookstore. They decided to go beyond that model. Specific to country, you found that listeners are much more open to collaborations with pop artists than PDs anticipated. Is the perceived lack of acceptance of noncountry artists simply about an overly vocal but tiny purist audience segment? The specifics on what listeners want are a function of things like on-air testing and seeing how people respond to it. The point I made was when we do our call-out research, we’re testing the hook, not the artist. If you test something that sounds more like the pop artist than the country artist and don’t explain who’s part of the record, you’re essentially testing a pop song. You should make sure to anchor collaborations with the identity of the country artist, which legitimizes it on the air and in testing. Did anything from your research spark an idea you might want to explore further? When I started doing this, the gender thing was mentioned, but all of the fuss didn’t exist at the time. If anyone had told me various forces were going to put out research studies that were primarily PR lobbying efforts, I would have put much more emphasis into that area. There are questions that really will reveal what’s going on, at least from an attitudinal perspective. And if somebody actually wants to put it to the test, let them do it with real songs. Are there a couple of points you really hope stick? The biggest one is probably the hardest for the PD in Boise to deal with. People call DSPs radio. That’s the message for the management of radio companies as much as it is for anybody else. The problem is the degree to which we’re playing the ranker game. Broadcasters are going to lose because of the metrics those platforms have, as you pointed out. What radio has that they don’t is relationships with local advertisers. You can clarify my spend on Facebook, get me more people signing up to my email list and target my audience on Spotify all day long, but if a local radio station can get more people to walk into my furniture store, that’s a win. The other thing is the convenience issue. I did not expect that to be the No. 1 reason people use DSPs. That should be chilling to a broadcaster. For the programmer in Boise, I need to not only be as good as I can possibly be, but I need to engage my audience in all dimensions – real world, online, mobile devices and the radio. Integrate them into the station’s world and integrate the station into theirs.
