Radio Reacts To CRS 2020

Whether you majored in communications, started in radio during high school or landed in the field somewhere along the way, CRS can be equivalent to a doctoral degree in Country radio. With more educational sessions than a single body can attend – trust us, we’ve tried – and an entertainment lineup that can have attendees pulling “all nighters,” it is impossible to see and do everything. For that reason, Country Aircheck asked a cross section of CRS 2020 participants, including this year’s three Rusty Walker Scholarship winners, to share their experiences. KFRG/Riverside, CA’s Anthony Donatelli: “This was my first CRS, and it was a little intimidating walking up to people. I wish there were a networking panel within CRS itself. I’ve never been to Nashville, so Team UMG’s lunch at the Ryman was one of my favorite entertainment sessions. Getting to see one of the most historic parts of the city was amazing, plus did you see that lineup? Even though I’m not the big guy in charge, the ‘Leading Your Leaders In 2020’ panel was valuable in teaching me how to Anthony Donatelli communicate with co-workers. You don’t have to be the boss to be a leader, and I can’t wait to implement what I learned back at work. I hope I can attend again next year, but you can’t win the Rusty Walker Scholarship twice, so I’ll have to start saving up now!” WCTY/Norwich, CT’s Nichole Breau: “’Why I Use Audio’ was my favorite educational session, because the advertising Nichole Breau panelists gave me an inside look at how our clients think and what their process is when spending their advertising dollars. With this insight, I’ll position promotions to make them even more enticing to clients. I was disappointed I missed the ‘Defending Your Audience Share’ presentation, because it’s no secret that radio is evolving with the outpouring of new technology. (continued on page 15)

My CRS Story: RJ Curtis

Last year, CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis was co-pilot with outgoing Exec. Dir. Bill Mayne. For the 35 years before that, he was an attendee – often a board or agenda committee member. For CRS 2020, however, Curtis was fully at the controls ... and he learned a few things. Less than a week later, the hangover – no, not that kind – is foremost on his mind. “You’re so focused and intense leading up to the event, then it’s just over,” he says. “The decompression, letting go – that’s a big RJ Curtis adjustment. “Now it’s follow-up, pulling app

data and pushing a survey to attendees and the agenda committee.” During the big week, Curtis found things to be quite different from what he’s been used to. “You do get a lot of behind-thecurtain aspects,” he says. “I wasn’t attending CRS, we were producing it. You’re really into nuts-and-bolts engine building.” The first day, Wednesday, was the biggest challenge. “We started at noon and went until 8pm pretty nonstop, which was very aspirational on our part,” Curtis says. “From the amazing Warner lunch into two artist interviews with Opening Ceremonies in between, it was a lot. Getting people moved from the lunch to the Legends ballroom for Miranda Lambert and trying to stay on time was very stressful. After that, we knew we were running late.” Compact execution of Opening Ceremonies got the afternoon back on track, but Curtis worried later he’d been overtly stressed.

“I asked [CRB’s] Ashley Bourque about it and she said I was fine, it just looked like I had a lot of tabs open on my browser,” he laughs. “I totally did. People want to come up, say hello and visit, but I’ve got a clock ticking in my head. To anyone I was abrupt with or rude to, I apologize now.” Thursday and Friday were exceedingly smooth, including one event Curtis fretted over. “I was really worried about Bob Kingsley’s Acoustic Alley,” he says. “We knew Garth Brooks was coming, and he had a hard ‘out’ at 10pm. So we were more compressed with the two writer rounds than usual, but they were incredibly cooperative. Some of the nicest people in the world. And Garth was on time, though getting him from the green room to the stage was tough because he will stop and chat with anyone – he won’t blow anyone off. Nevertheless, we finished a minute early.”

MY TUNES: Ryan Wild WLHK/Indianapolis PD Ryan Wild discusses his most influential music: 1. Chicago: I couldn’t go anywhere in my house without hearing something by Chicago, and even to this day, I’m okay with that. 2. Johnny Cash: No one could speak the truth like Johnny. He was a revolution then and continues to be one now. He bucked Ryan Wild convention, tradition and chose to be himself — good, bad or ugly and I love him for that. 3. BoDeans: There is something so simplistic about the BoDeans. My wife, Sandy, turned me onto them years ago. Their grasp of the American life — in all of its color and shape — is something truly beautiful when they put their iconic voices to songs like “Idaho” and “Paradise.” 4. Don Henley: Like the BoDeans, Henley told stories of love lost (and won) and a life lived, both good and bad. You can get lost in his songs for hours, and I love every minute of it! 5. Counting Crows: Who doesn’t own a copy of August And Everything After? Storytellers who truly connect and make you feel something deeper. I love getting lost in the extended live cuts of “Round Here” and “Recovering The Satellites.” Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I haven’t truly sampled any Billie Eilish. I’m sure it’s great, but I just haven’t gotten around to listening to it yet. I’m lame, I know! An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: Honestly … it was classic country for me. When I was a kid, I was constantly bombarded with ’60s, ’70s and ’80s pop and rock, so the tempo of classic country seemed weird to me, but as I got into junior high and started to develop a broader musical taste, I loved the songwriting and the rebels of the format like Johnny, Buck and Hank. Album(s) you listened to incessantly: OneRepublic’s Dreaming Out Loud and Runaway June’s Blue Roses. These ladies are truly special, and I love the connection they make on this album. The stories are beautiful and the harmonies are golden. Thanks for sharing your gifts with the rest of us, ladies! An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Golden State’s “Splinters Out” reminds me that we are not defined by our past mistakes. We can either wear those mistakes as wounds or choose to pull those splinters out and work towards letting go. Guilty Pleasure Music: I have a broad musical palette: Starship, Mike & The Mechanics, Haircut 100 or anything you can throw at me. I’m always game for a spontaneous ’80s party!

A full assessment of the 2020 event will take time. “It’s too early,” Curtis says. “At this point, it’s mostly anecdotal about how much star power we had. There was a lot of strong media coverage for the artists who participated, and we’re very pleased to see that. I compare CRS to country’s Detroit Auto Show in that it’s early in the year and a great venue to announce new things – like the Tim McGraw and Reba McEntire signings. “Overall, I’m really proud of the staff,” Curtis concludes. “They did a great job.” See Country Aircheck’s coverage of the event here and in the website archives. Several of my peers at CRS were very complimentary regarding my social media presence, and I was told it was even discussed as an example in a class as being good use of a digital platform. If anything, that strengthened my resolve. My favorite networking opportunity was the ‘Women’s Mentoring Breakfast.’ It’s inspiring to walk into a room of females who truly understand this industry and want to help others. small stuff bother me. I’m using what I learned in that panel to build a better culture and environment in our workplace. I know there is an unemployment rate for CRS, but I’ve always felt there needs to be an unemployment panel on dealing with the stages of grief in losing your job as well as offering tips on refreshing your résumé and airchecks. This business is very unforgiving, so it would be nice to help some of our colleagues get back into the game.” KUZZ/Bakersfield, CA’s Kenn McCloud: “This was my first CRS, and there was so much to see and do. The biggest takeaway was how our listeners feel their phone is the radio – game changer! We also got some good quality comments on up-and-coming female artists. Barlines is a must for meeting people and having productive conversations, as well.
