Q&A: Fram Leads Equal Play

CMT recently pledged half of its video airplay to female artists (CAT 1/21), joined shortly thereafter by Cody Alan’s nationally syndicated CMT Radio Live night show. Leading into the official kickoff event for CMT Equal Play, SVP/Music Strategy & Talent Leslie Fram spoke to Country Aircheck about the pledge, the potential impact of equal play and her hopes for the program. CA: CMT commissioned a research study from Coleman Insights and Dr. Jada Watson to review her equality study before launching CMT Equal Play. What was the genesis of the decision to commission your own research? LF: We were looking at all of the myths out there that have become self-fulfilling prophecies. As you know, over the last several years, we’ve repeatedly heard, “Women don’t want to hear women” and “You can’t play two women back-to-back.” That’s really not true, Leslie Fram and there’s never been any research to say that; no one ever really talked to the fans directly. Knowing that Coleman Insights is very reputable and does the majority of radio research – from focus groups to perceptuals – and having worked with them in the past when I was in radio, I went to them and said, “Hey, has this ever been done?” And they said, “No, actually it hasn’t.” So we talked to real fans who listen to country music and Country radio, and we got their thoughts about female artists. [We] asked if they would like to hear more, if they were hearing enough and gauged their level of interest. What role will Dr. Watson play? She has been a godsend and is working passionately on this, because she is passionate about the cause and the music. She will be presenting her 2019 report as well as her decade report, and when you see it, you’ll notice [declines] some years in the support and percentage of females being exposed. She will continue to be our research arm and will work with us in the future. Jennifer Nettles is going to be a big part of this, as well, because she has already been very vocal and supportive, has been working on other initiatives of her own and wants to help us (continued on page 7)

Exclusive: Edison Brings Good News

New data from Edison Research’s Share of Ear study shows Country P1s remain more committed to broadcast radio than fans of other formats. Where 44% of all audio consumption goes to AM/ FM radio, for Country listeners, it’s 52%. Share of Ear, Edison’s comprehensive audio consumption diary has been ongoing since 2014, but the audio sources question relative to country has just been added. The country audience’s tilt toward traditional radio exceeds other formats, basically, “Anything targeted younger,” says Edison President Larry Rosin. “They just listen to less radio.” While broadcast radio remains the single biggest chunk of overall audio, streaming is growing. “Among the youngest Larry Rosin demos, streaming has surpassed broadcast radio,” Rosin says. Fortunately, Country remains strong with adults. “As I’ve said in the past at CRS, year after year Country does the work of connecting

to community and being fully fleshed out radio – more so than other formats. The bond with listeners is as strong or stronger than any other. Urban and Christian are the most analogous.” Meanwhile, Country radio airplay continues to be a crucial component for success in the genre, though not as mandatory as in years prior. “You can build an arena filling career without it,” Rosin says. “Kacey Musgraves has proven it’s doable, so it’s at least a possibility where it used to be borderline impossible. Still, radio remains important for makers and distributors of country music.” –Chuck Aly

WEBG’s Count Everest

Something different is coming across the airwaves at iHeartMedia WEBG/Chicago this week, but fear not. It isn’t a format flip. Monday at 9am CT, WEBG launched into a countdown of the 1,000 greatest country songs of all time, as determined by Big 95.5 PD Lance Houston’s blue ribbon panel of experts. Lance Houston “We were brainstorming a few months ago trying to find ways to show our love for country music, the respect and admiration we have for its history and, also, to do something,

well, big,” Houston says. The winning idea was to create a list of 2,200 top charting country songs, have them rated and ranked, then count them down over the course of one week. “We will air the countdown every day from 9am-8pm, so this will wrap Saturday, Feb. 22,” notes Houston. “It works out to approximately 170 songs per day.” Houston’s panel included 26 participants – 14 men and 12 women – from Country radio and records and other industryadjacent areas. “I was looking for passionate fans of the format who were also historians, as some of these songs date back to the 1950s,” he explains. Factors assessed included songwriting, artist contribution to country music history, historical and popular cultural significance of a song and/or streaming data, radio airplay and peak chart position. “It took months for the panel to rate the spreadsheet – which I presented to them in alphabetical.” Houston left the results untouched. “There are a few back-to-back songs from the same artist or multiple ballads in a row – and that’s okay,” he says. “We are going to have a lot of ‘oh, wow’ moments in this countdown, and I hope we spark debate online and in person.” Houston built new clocks, wrote sweepers and imaging, and dragged each song manually into NexGen. The work didn’t stop with the creation of the list and new clocks, however; the entire onair staff has been studying in order to prep their shows around the countdown. “I had TiVo’d this past year’s Ken Burns Country Music documentary, and everyone has watched it to better understand the history of some of this music,” says Houston. “We’ve looked up facts and tied songs together with background stories to both entertain and educate as we move through this music that is the foundation of our format. “The oldest songs are from Hank Williams, Sr. and Faron

Off The Record: Tyler Farr Night Train/Broken Bow’s Tyler Farr puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KBEQ/Kansas City. The first time I heard myself on the radio was on a hometown station in Clinton, MO. They were playing a song I wrote called “It’s A Hunting Thang.” When I heard my first single on the Tyler Farr radio, I felt like a rockstar. But in the same sense, I was very humbled, because in that moment I felt that I sounded kind of … crappy. I don’t really like hearing myself sing. Here’s a memory: playing a Carrabba’s in the northeast with David Friedman, my regional at the time, before the restaurant opened. There was hardly anybody in there, and the only folks clapping were the kitchen staff. Not a shining moment! If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it’d be my grandpa. We’d get biscuits and gravy from the Old Cedar Inn in Garden City, MO. The new single is a country redneck love song. It’s called “Only Truck In Town,” and it’s exactly what I wanted as a single coming back to radio. My friend Jason Aldean produced it, and we knew it was “the one” the first time we heard it. My last impulse buy was Australian crawdads on Amazon. You can get pretty much everything on there! The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is asking my wife to come outside and pee with me. I wish I’d written “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” It’s the best country song ever written, hands down. My road essentials are Grizzly Wintergreen, lots of water and green tea. And beef jerky anytime we stop at a truck stop. If I had to be stuck somewhere, other than home, I’d choose Los Angeles. It’s eventful and full of potential adventure! The weather’s not bad, either. I’m currently binging The Irishman and Ozark on Netflix. Young,” says Houston. “The newest are very recent, including Sam Hunt’s ‘Body Like A Backroad.’” The artist with the most songs? George Strait with 52, more than 5% of the total list. Tim McGraw will make 30 appearances while Alabama and Alan Jackson each notch 28 songs. An alphabetical listing of every included song is online now and will be updated with rankings as the countdown rolls. At its conclusion, WEBG will announce the launch of their Throwback Weekends, wherein the station will replace some existing gold titles with songs from the countdown and continue to highlight

them and their place in history. “I have no illusions of this being a big ratings winner, meter-wise,” Houston says. “What I am hoping for is, in the last couple days, there will be people around the city saying, ‘Did you hear what Big 95.5 is doing?’” If you want to hear what they’re doing, stream the station here. –Monta Vaden

Shelton Brings Friends And Heroes

Warner/WMN’s Blake Shelton launched his Friends And Heroes 2020 tour in Portland the night before Valentine’s Day. KUPL APD/MD/midday personality Danny Dwyer and KWJJ afternoon host Tim Taylor were in attendance at the Moda Center. Shelton’s staging includes a half-circle setup with a catwalk that extends to an additional, smaller full circle at the end. “If you look at it from above, it’s almost like a pendulum,” explains Dwyer. Adds Taylor, “Blake uses three large screens at the main stage and two satellite screens for the upper decks.” Lauren Alaina’s opening set lasted approximately 30 minutes, after which a brief set change was accompanied by a ‘90s country playlist. When Shelton hit the stage at 8pm, there were no video montages or heavy intros, according to Taylor: “Just Blake Danny Dwyer (l) and and his band getting right into the Blake Shelton action.” Shelton moved through his hits for approximately an hour, including a performance of his current single, “Nobody But You.” “Since it was almost Valentine’s Day, we were all hoping [Shelton’s duet partner and girlfriend] Gwen [Stefani] would be there, but she wasn’t,” says Dwyer. “Instead, Blake walked down the catwalk to the smaller circular stage and turned around to face the big screens on the main

stage. Then a large video of Gwen singing her part appeared. It was a cool way to handle it, because it made it look like they were singing directly do each other, even though she wasn’t there in person.” An hour into his set, Shelton introduced his first “hero and friend,” Anderson. “Blake was suddenly gone, and John Anderson was coming up through the bottom of the stage,” says Dwyer. “John did three songs – ‘Seminole Wind,’ ‘Money In The Bank’ and ‘Swingin’.’” Shelton performed four more of his own before welcoming The Bellamy Brothers for their set, which included “Let Your Love Flow,” “Do You Love As Good As You Look” and “Redneck Girl.” After four additional songs from Shelton, Adkins took the stage for “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” “You’re Gonna Miss This” and “Ladies Love Country Boys” before Shelton joined him for duets, “Hell Tim Taylor (r) and wife Right” and “Hillbilly Bone.” Tanya with Blake Shelton Dwyer says, “The loudest screams of the night may have been for Trace. At times, I thought I must have wandered into a Backstreet Boys show, because ladies of all ages were screaming their lungs out!” Anderson and The Bellamy Brothers returned to join Shelton and Adkins on the smaller stage for an acoustic, guitarpull round. Shelton’s show concluded with a three-song encore. “We were singing and dancing all night with 20,000 of our closest friends,” says Taylor. that will be part of our next phase. Warner Music Nashville EVP/A&R Cris Lacy is also taking part in your kickoff event. Have you discussed this initiative with labels? What has their reaction been? Yes, the support level behind all of this has been positive so far, from people like Cris and [UMG/Nashville Pres.] Cindy Mabe and various others in the publishing and PR realms. The next phase for us is to go out and lock arms, because we are the gatekeepers. Imagine a world where we’re all working together and everyone moves – even if just by 10% – and think about what it would look like at the end of 2020. We have to work together for the future and health of the format, not just for females but also honestly for the future of all artists. Do we want to look at this next decade and not see any women represented? There haven’t been discussions with labels about the effect on male artists. And listen, I’m the biggest fan of a lot of male artists, and we support so many. We just don’t want to overload on one thing. In radio, sometimes you can go top heavy on a certain sound. It happens in all formats. But, when you do that, now you have a male problem in that, are all of these guys going to be able to break through? That’s my concern on the male level. And is it fair to say you have the support and backing of Viacom? I’m really lucky and grateful that Viacom has always been behind us in saying this is the right thing to do. Even two years ago when we did an all-female CMT Artists Of The Year (CAT 9/11/18), they said, “Oh, this is the right thing to do.” There’s never been any roadblocks at Viacom. Now what we’re doing with Equal Play, which is a year long initiative, we’re working with our Viacom partners in New York. You have to have action if you want to see different results. Right? It’s really been empowering for me and the whole team at CMT. And, honestly, being able to go to other gatekeepers to say, “Can you do the right thing? Can you, at a higher level, say we can move the needle?” It’s not going to hurt ratings to bring in more female voices per hour, especially if you’re bringing back songs that were hits or artists that we know the fans love, right? Do you have artist support – male and female? You’re seeing it on a touring level, not only with Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert always taking women out and supporting women, but you’re seeing it with some male artists now. Keith Urban always takes women out on the road, and so does Dierks Bentley. Now you’re seeing it from Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton and some of the younger artists like Jordan Davis. If the males are going to speak up and that’s how they’re speaking up, I’m all for it. What do you think has previously hindered airplay female artists? If you look at some of the research that has been out there – and CRS actually did a great webinar led by RJ Curtis – it shows the history of when things started to fall apart. Even at its best, we were only at 30% female airplay in the ‘90s, but at that time, they sort of drove the format with sales and tours thanks to Reba [McEntire], Faith Hill, Shania [Twain] and all the amazing artists in the ‘90s. There was a period around 2015 where a lot of women exited the format, so that’s one of the theories. Taylor Swift left, then you had a couple other females or female led groups that left the format, and there wasn’t enough inventory to bring it back up, and we’ve been living in that space. With more female artists getting signed in recent years, we’re starting to see more on the chart right now, which is exciting. You’re also seeing more female songwriters having success, whether they’re writing for males or females. That’s another thing I feel like is going to change the paradigm. I think we’re entering a new phase, and I’m hoping that’s going to be part of the solution for success.
