As Country Radio Seminar prepares to mark its 51st anniversary – and the 50th anniversary of the ever-popular New Faces of Country Music Show, CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis and CRS Agenda Committee Chair Judy Lakin share the plan. Whether an attendee is a CRS rookie or long tenured, they’re touting something for everyone ... and plenty of surprises. When The Stars Come Out: CRS 2020 kicks off Wednesday, Feb. 19 with the return of the Warner Music Nashville luncheon headlined by Blue Chair/Warner/WEA’s Kenny Chesney, who will also pick up the Artist Humanitarian Award and may or may not wear a tank top in February. A one-on-one conversation with RCA’s Miranda Lambert immediately follows and leads into the official opening ceremonies. Rounding out the day is Big Machine’s Rascal Flatts, who will be undoubtedly candid in conversation surrounding their 20th anniversary and recently announced farewell tour. “We are coming out of the gates swinging and bringing some of the biggest stars in the format to the opening day to RJ Curtis welcome everyone to CRS 2020,” says Curtis. “We’ve had great feedback from our annual artist conversations, and we’ve had requests to offer more of those experiences.” Day one will conclude with the CRS Welcome Reception and Amazon Music Showcase. Food For Thought: Thursday includes a full slate of educational opportunities to feed the mind, but not before three breakfast opportunities feed the belly. The annual Judy Lakin Believer’s Breakfast takes an official slot on the agenda this year after several years of growing organically among attendees. Word on the street is there will be a special guest or two to share their testimony. The Digital + Streaming Breakfast and Programming Mentoring Breakfast follow, with experts and mentors to meet, greet and eat with anyone looking to make a connection. Lakin says the first educational session of the morning is not to be missed. (continued on page 7)

Radio’s Bill Cody Now In TV’s Circle Ask Country Radio Hall of Famer Bill Cody about his WSMAM/Nashville morning show landing on television, and he gets animated about all that it is. But he may be even more excited about what it aims to be. Coffee, Country & Cody debuted New Year’s Day on Circle, the recently launched country music and lifestyle network that is a partnership between the Opry Entertainment Group and Gray’s Television. My Tunes: Kree Harrison One Vision Music Group’s Kree Harrison puts an industry spin on the artist interview: My favorite hometown radio station is KTHT/Houston. I know the exact moment on the route from Nashville to Port Arthur when my car’s antenna can finally pick up the signal, and I jam to it all the way home. Kree Harrison I was eight years old the first time I heard myself on the radio. I did an interview with Al Caldwell from a station in Beaumont, TX. We talked about how the following weekend I was going to open up for Percy Sledge. After we were done chatting, my mom and I ran to the car to listen to my little recording of a song called “Trick Pony.” We were so tickled that I was listening to myself say how excited I was to meet Mr. Sledge and for people to come to the show! I’ll never forget us both listening to me for first time on the radio blasting out from the speakers of our royal blue Astro van. I never miss the chance to scan the truck stop shelves for these chips called Takis. Heaven. However, the Beaver nuggets at Buc-ee’s are a real tried-and-true classic. If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Otis Redding. I’d be delighted to order and eat everything his tender heart desired. Chosen Family Tree is the best work I’ve done so far. The title explains it all. I’m so proud to give this album to my fans. My “achilles heel” is old vinyls. Worth more than every penny. Just the other day, I fixed my broken window blinds with one of those Wonder Bread bag ties. Redneck = inventive. There’s a lot of songs I wish I wrote. But, the one that’s toward the top of that list is “Something” by The Beatles. It’s perfect. My road trip essential is…face masks, boys and girls! I looooooove them. Self-care is something we all deserve. I also pass them out to my bandmates. There is nothing funnier than the reactions of people in the passing cars on the interstate seeing a bus full of grown-ass people wearing animal-themed face masks. If I had to be stuck somewhere, it would be NYC. There are endless experiences to have in that city. I’m currently binging/rewatching Desperate Housewives. Hahahaha whyyyy?

in Nashville soon. A streaming service is expected to launch in the spring (CAT 12/11/19). Anchoring weekday mornings (7-10am CT) from WSM’s newly renovated studio inside the Opryland Hotel are Cody with on-air partner Charlie Mattos and correspondent Jo Smith, formerly signed to Sony/Nashville. In some ways, the show’s television Jo Smith bow harkens back to Cody’s early days in Nashville. “Twenty-five years ago, this corner of town was magical,” he says. “TNN [The Nashville Network] was here, everybody wanted to be on it and it was one tour bus after another coming through.” Conversations with Circle GM Drew Reifenberger go back at least six months. The slate was wide open, but bringing the Charlie Mattos morning show onto television seemed like the place to start. “There’s going to be a lot more opportunity for me on Circle, but as they listened and thought about it, the feeling was this could be a breakout show for the network,” Cody says. “Not that people haven’t already done radio on TV, but it’s more than that. America, where it’s a TV show. And it’s not the guys who have a camera or three in studio without a lot of production. This is where those two come together.” For those who haven’t seen it, Cody describes a personality driven morning radio show with lots of artist-driven content and social media interaction. “I love doing interviews – that’s been a strength for me – and then you add the live performances,” he says. Keeping the tenor of his WSM-AM show was important. “We didn’t want to lose the magic of radio, the theater of the imagination,” he says. “There is still something about radio that captivates people. Sometimes radio magic happens. We have production meetings after every show. We do a lot of planning and prep. But there’s still that thing that happens that no amount of prep could have created.” The show is still on Music City’s airwaves, of course. “We have to keep in mind there’s a radio audience in Nashville depending on us for traffic, primarily, as well as weather, news and sports. So it’s a dual world that can be tougher, mentally for us as on-air personalities.” Local breaks are timed to TV commercials. “For a guy in radio who loves to talk, that’s the hardest part,” he laughs. “’Wait, I’ve got something else to say!’ But it’s a hard clock and we have to break away. I’ve worked at stations with a really tight clock before, having started in radio at 12. It’s not unfamiliar to me and I’m reminding myself that I can save something for after the break. Hit the mark and tease what’s ahead.” More than just the next segment, CC&C’s namesake is eager to see his show reach its goals. “There is still a lot of rollout planned for the spring,” he says. “Once it’s on in Nashville, my hope is we begin to feel the impact in the industry. So much of the country community lives here, raises families here. Artists get pulled in so many directions, so I’m hoping Coffee, Country & Cody becomes a destination because of Circle’s impact and convenience. Having access to radio all over the world and national television right here could be something special and mean they don’t always have to go to New York and L.A. to premiere music. It’s right here and can have a positive impact on their careers and lives. Data Based: Year & Decade Sales

Nielsen Music’s 2019 Year-End Music Report notes radio continues to be the top source of music discovery; however, the average general population consumer is embracing more digital channels for weekly music listening. Teens are setting the pace for

streaming engagement at 53% of their weekly music time, compared to 41% for the average listener. Music podcasting also continues to broaden its reach with 41% of the general population expressing an interest and 60% of those in the 35-44 demo saying they listen. Both digital and physical album sales dropped in 2019 – 23.5% and 15%, respectively – with the exception of vinyl, which saw 14.5% growth year-over-year. In country, River House/Columbia’s Luke Combs earned the highest first-week audio on-demand streams with 74 million for songs from his What You See Is What You Get album. This total marks the highest-ever single-week streaming activity for a country album. BMG/Broken Bow’s Blanco Brown garnered 461 million on-demand streams for “The Git Up,” and Valory’s Thomas Rhett drew 76,000 first-week equivalent album units for Center Point Road. The top five genre artists were Combs, Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean, Rhett, Mercury’s Chris Stapleton and Capitol’s Luke Bryan; Combs had two of the top five albums, with Dan + Shay, Stapleton and Morgan Wallen rounding out the pack. The music industry overall experienced growth in 2019 with audio and video ondemand streams surpassing one trillion for the first time Nov. 25 ending the year with 1.15 trillion total streams. The top-streamed on-demand song is Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” with a combined audio and videostreaming total of 2.5 billion; the track Jason Aldean garnered 8.7 million song equivalent units, including more than 1 billion on-demand audio streams and 1.5 million song sales. Decade-end numbers for album sales place Bryan and BMLGR’s Lady Antebellum at seventh and eighth overall, respectively. Sales of Taylor Swift’s Big Machine-based catalog, including 1989, Speak Now and Red, placed her at number two for the decade behind top-slotted Luke Bryan Adele. Congratulations to Lady Antebellum, Jimmy Harnen, Matthew Hargis and the BMLG Records promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “What If I Never Get Over You.” The song is Lady A’s 10th career chart-topper and the first single from their recently released studio album Ocean, marking their return to the chart pinnacle five years after 2014’s “Bartender.” Both the album and single are the group’s first with BMLGR. Songwriters are Ryan Hurd, Sam Ellis, Laura Veltz and Jon Green. And kudos to Jim Malito and the Reviver crew and Ken Tucker and the Wheelhouse reps on notching 38 adds for Tenille Arts’ “Somebody Like That” and Zac Brown Band’s “Leaving Love Behind,” respectively, topping this week’s board.

The always-thoughtprovoking session will once again feature Stone Door Media Lab’s Jeff Green and his slideshow of data – previewed in the Country Aircheck print edition on newsstands at the event. Also on the docket in the 9am hour is “Leading Your Leaders in 2020,” which Curtis promises will offer insight on communicating Kenny Chesney effectively and maximizing performance when coaching a staff. The annual CRS Research Presentation takes place at 10am, followed by Team UMG at the Ryman, where more than a few folks are likely to be roasted by Royce Risser while they eat sandwiches in the pews. Afternoon sessions kick off with “All The Single Ladies: Breaking Female Artists” and “Why I Use Audio: The Advertiser’s Perspective.” Curtis explains, “CRS is meant Eric Church to bring together everyone in our industry to talk about the problems we are currently facing, but also the things that are yet to come. panel will address the relevance of all audio in connecting with consumers today and why big brands are bullish on audio.” Continuing the forward-looking theme, the “Tech Crystal Ball” panel will include Jacobs Media’s Fred Jacobs explaining how to increase engagement and awareness of your products and brands. “I have seen Fred present this Miranda information at other conferences, and it is Lambert engaging and mind-blowing,” remarks Curtis. “I am especially excited to bring this to our CRS attendees this year, as we push our theme of looking to the future of radio.” EMI Nashville’s Eric Church will close out day two with a rare and intimate Q&A session – aviators TBD. 2020 Vision: The final day of CRS 2020 begins with the always-popular Label Mentoring and Women’s Mentoring breakfasts. Rascal Flatts “All of our breakfasts have continued to gain in popularity, and there’s no doubt it has a lot to do with the strength of the lineup of our mentors,” Curtis says. “The ability to sit down with the leaders of our industry, ask questions, swap contact information and build a rapport to carry into the remainder of your career is invaluable.” The day’s 9am session sees the return of Miles Adcox with a presentation Carrie about dealing with stress. Immediately Underwood following, attendees can choose from “Doing Good In Your Hood: Localization Matters” or “Reading The Teen Leaves: Staying Relevant Now and in the Future.” “This ‘Teen Leaves’ panel is intriguing,” says Curtis. “The idea of hearing about

ways a station can latch on to trends to create on-air and social moments is so important as we move into the next decade of radio and social media interaction.” The 11am offerings include “What Keeps You Up At Night?” and “Radio in the New Decade,” again playing on the theme of forward momentum. The Big Machine Label Group Luncheon will feature performances from BMLGR’s Florida Georgia Line and Lady Antebellum, among others, and leads into the afternoon educational session, “In Pod We Trust.” “As podcasting continues to gain ground and become more popular with our radio audience, we need to check out what that means for radio and how we can use the platform for our own good,” shares Curtis. Capitol’s Carrie Underwood, who Curtis calls “the perfect human,” closes the day in the traditional artist interview slot. “Carrie is a superstar, an icon in her own right and is a role model for her fans as well as other artists,” explains Curtis. “She’s had quite the personal and career evolution, and talking to her about that will echo so much of what we are focusing on this year in CRS.” Every Milestone A Memory: CRS 2020 is capped off by the 50th anniversary presentation of the New Faces of Country Music Dinner and Showcase, this year featuring Warner/WEA’s Ingrid Andress and Morgan Evans, BMLGR’s Riley Green, Wheelhouse’s Runaway June and Riser House/Columbia’s Mitchell Tenpenny. Recipients of the 2020 CRS/Country Aircheck Awards will also be revealed during the dinner, which Curtis says will be chock full of memorable moments. “It’s an anniversary year for New Faces, and I have a lot of plans in the works,” he promises. “There’s no doubt some of these moments will be the buzz of Barlines when the curtain drops.” If you haven’t made it to CRS previously, there’s no time like the present to start looking toward the future.
