WIVK PD: Any Rich Way You Can

Recently named Cumulus WIVK/Knoxville PD Rich Bailey (CAT 10/18) may be new to the format, but he’s no stranger to the market, the music or the competitive mentality. After a 23-year tenure at Journal/Scripps/Summit Top 40 WWST/Knoxville, Bailey crossed the street with a bag of tricks and a readiness to take on a new challenge. He told Country Aircheck about the appeal of the new gig, his strategy going in and how he threw the playbook out the window once he arrived. CA: While you are new to day-today Country programming, you are not entirely new to the format, correct? RB: That’s right. I’ve been in Knoxville for Rich more than 23 years, and all of that time was Bailey spent “across the street,” as they say. I was the OM for Summit/Knoxville and handled day-to-day programming and afternoons for Top 40 WWST. We also had a Country station in our cluster, WCYQ, and I was involved with the initial launch of that station in 2009 as well. I have lived, worked and competed in this city for a long time, and I am thrilled to continue my career here. When you left Summit in March, were you hoping to stay in Knoxville, or did you consider opportunities in other markets? There were some opportunities and offers in other areas, but this is where my wife, Carol, and I have made a home. After more than two decades, we knew this was where we wanted to stay. At the time, I wasn’t sure what would come to pass, but love having the opportunity to take the reins at a heritage station that I already admired and respected. Getting the call to program WIVK made the reward worth the risk of staying and waiting for an opportunity to get back in the game here at home. Did you have any preconceived notions or plans before getting into the building? I definitely felt like I knew the station. After competing directly with WIVK, I came in with my own ideas and what I thought I might do, but getting in the building changed my mind about a lot of that. You don’t really know a station until you’re in the middle of it (continued on page 6)

Brad Paisley Thinks What?

Airing Tuesday (12/3) at 8pm ET on ABC, Brad Paisley Thinks He’s Special is a modern take on the variety show. Paisley previewed the show on this week’s Country Countdown USA, portions of which are excerpted below. Paisley approached the network roughly 18 months ago. “First of all, it would be nice to represent another place in America besides New York and LA,” he says of the idea. “There’s no place like Nashville, that’s this hot. It’s truly amazing what’s happening here. Turning a camera on that is interesting.” Beyond that, musical performances, collaborations and sketches he describes Brad Paisley more as “set-ups” fleshed out his pitch to the

network. “It’s part late night show in prime time, part awards show where no one loses, part Saturday Night Live, part Austin City Limits,” he says. “I’ve watched several episodes of Glen Campbell and Johnny Cash shows to prep for this. That was a different day and time, but that’s exactly what I wanted to update. You saw Bob Dylan, John Wayne and Roger Miller pop up ... how much fun would it be to have something [similar]?” NFL icon Peyton Manning is in an on-camera advisory role. “We list him as coach,” Paisley says. “With the Nationwide commercials we do together, he’s attempting to do what I do ... he’s in over his head. In this one, I’m in over my head and he’s looking at me like, what are you doing? We’ve kind of flipped the roles.” As to the setups, one revolves around Nashville’s infamous pedal taverns – “it’s the state flower at this point,” Paisley says – and its associated culture. “I crash a bachelorette party and ride around on one of those with a girl who is getting married and her bridesmaids. In the middle of that we surprise them with Chris Harrison from the Bachelor and Bachelorette series. We call it the ‘Bradchelorette.’ What’s funny is what Broadway does when Chris Harrison is standing downtown with a bunch of roses in his hand.” Another segment is built around Paisley’s song “American Saturday Night.” Performing the song with his band at War Memorial Auditorium, Paisley departs mid-tune for Tootsie’s on Lower Broad, where he finds Hootie and the Blowfish performing one of their hits. Paisley pulls Darius Rucker with him back to War Memorial, where the first song is finished. “It was a logistical feat, but it worked,” he says. Taking Carrie Underwood mudding was a mashup of Carpool Karaoke and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee that turned on its head when she insisted on driving. “I thought I would take her out of her comfort zone ... but that’s not what happened,” he Brad Paisley says. “She ended up taking me completely out of my comfort zone and scares the living daylights out of me. That woman should have her license revoked ... I’m

pretty sure she broke the axle ... I’m not acting in this segment. I’m physically scared at times she’ll flip this truck over.” Paisley is circumspect about a setup in which he’s holding auditions for new members of the Jonas Brothers, noting his wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Tim McGraw steal the scene. “Or maybe Darius does, it’s a toss-up. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done.” Some of the segments add a heartfelt element to the comedy, including one based on Paisley’s “Letter To Me.” In another segment, he writes songs with audience members, and in another, with a former St. Jude patient. “I thought this will be a nice way of showing what St. Jude can do,” he says. “What I didn’t expect is she’s Beyoncé. It’s crazy. She walked out and wailed.” Of course, to truly echo earlier variety shows, Paisley’s would have to be more than a special. “We could have named it something that would lend itself more to a series,” he admits, saying the special’s success will determine whether there are future iterations. “You couldn’t do 22 of these, but you could do more if need be.” Meanwhile, he’s also working a scripted comedy series for Amazon called Fish Out Of Water. “Imagine Curb Your Enthusiasm or the Larry Sanders Show on a lake with a country singer who is in over his head and completely a mess,” Paisley says. Plot points are drawn from life in the entertainment business. “All the stories you tell each other in private – the things that go wrong in a career ... CRS, backstage at awards shows, road stories. Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen and the Columbia promotion team on landing a third consecutive week at No. 1 with “Even Though I’m Leaving.” The song is the seventh chart-topper and second single from Combs’ recently released second studio album, What You See Is What You Get. Songwriters are Luke Combs Wyatt Durrette, Ray Fulcher and Combs. And kudos to Josh Easler, Arista reps and the Good Company team on notching 47 adds for Matt Stell’s “Everywhere But On” topping this week’s board.

OFF THE RECORD: Tyler Rich Valory’s Tyler Rich puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to my hometown station KKCY/ Yuba City, CA. The first time I heard myself on the radio, I had gone back home to the Sacramento area to perform. A program director (JJ Ryan) of the iHeart station was at the show. When it was over, he introduced himself, then took me back out on stage to tell me and the crowd that Tyler Rich he was going to start playing my current indie release, “Radio.” That next day, he texted me to let me know exactly when it would be getting its first spin. I’ll never forget the feeling of validation and a new acceleration of hope for this crazy dream of mine. To make it even sweeter, it was in the area I was raised, so my entire family, all my friends and fans got to all experience it with me in the same moment. Radio tour is full of the most off-the-wall, random, spontaneous events for about five months straight. But the one that will always stand out to me the most was in Raleigh, NC. We did a pedal tavern show. They called it Trolley through Raleigh (say that out loud). Some winners and I pedaled through downtown drinking and playing music and stopped at a pub along the way. It was the stoplights, and interruptions from bachelorette party scavenger hunts, that made it even more memorable. Ha! My favorite road companion is my tour manager, Timmy, For a billion reasons. He keeps my life in order, keeps our show on the road with no hiccups (usually) and agrees that 60 degrees in any vehicle or hotel room is never too cold. If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it’d be my late great grandfather. I would buy a bunch of Red Vines licorice, our favorite, and sit and talk to him about his life. My new song, “Rather Be Us,” was written about how important it is to put your phone down and live in the moment. So often we sit on social media all day comparing our lives to others, when in reality, those lives we may be envious of are exactly what we’ve already got, just with better filters and more followers. My wife and I had a day off in Mexico when the Brantley Gilbert Kick It In The Ship cruise docked in Cozumel. We stopped at a tiny tequila tasting store. After (a bunch) of tasting, we decided we liked the aged rare bottle the most and spent $200 to take it home. I’m sure you could buy it here for $50 somewhere, but if I never google it, then I’ll never find it. I put ketchup on my eggs every day. I get told this is very redneck from my friends in New England, but I’m not sure I agree. Does that make me a redneck? I wish I’d written “Man In The Mirror” by Michael Jackson. The message is everything. The world can always be a better place, every little step counts and the first step begins with you. I can’t go on the road without my iPad (aka my keeper of my favorite movies, new and old). Getting homesick is such a real thing, we deal with it every week. When I’m feeling down, I watch favorite movies of mine from growing up that remind me of places or specific family members and friends. My least favorite interview questions is, “If you’re from California, why country?” I just watched the whole first season of Daybreak in two days. And, no, I’m not lazy. I just travel a lot. ;)

every day and working with the staff. This team is made up of a great mix of veterans and young guns, and my job here will be to continue to build on the success while elevating the culture to new highs. Everything starts with the culture in the hallways. What was your first priority once you were in the building? Meeting with the on-air staff. My very first meeting was with [morning team] Tony and Kris. I wanted to get to know them as people, learn what they value and how they operate and find out more about them on a level that will help me coach them. You mentioned the diverse composition of this staff. Can you speak to the levels of experience you are working with on-air? Absolutely. Tony and Kris are still fairly new to the market, but they are pros who have a long tenure in the format and the business. They know who they are on-air as a team, and they

aren’t afraid to take risks. We have a young gun in nights, Mac, who is fresh and excited and passionate about the station. I’m also lucky to have market veteran Gunner in afternoons. He’s a pro, he knows this station and he understands and connects with the audience. My Dir./Promotions Jennifer is handling middays, and she is also very familiar with the market. And, this is also a station that just won a CMA Award for Medium Market Station of the Year. Exactly! This is a powerhouse of a station, and the staff is in place to make magic. My goal is to build on that. We have so much to work with, and we’ve been given all the tools we need. Now, we just keep pushing forward and elevating. I’m planning to split the middays shift with Jennifer, and I’m just hoping to carry my own weight! I’ve been on the air in this town for a long time, but moving over is always a challenge. It’s one I’m excited about, but it’s also a responsibility I do not take lightly. I know this station, but in fairness, I know it from a competitive perspective. That’s a benefit in some regards, but I also know there’s a lot to learn, as well. I also have a lot to offer. I have a new eye and ear that hasn’t been in the building before. I have a healthy understanding of the direct competitors. And I bring a focus on culture and attitude and teamwork that I think the staff is excited about. It’s also a first working for the flagship station of the Tennessee Volunteers. Having the Vol Network in the building adds a different level of excitement and a new set of challenges as a programmer. Let’s talk about the format for a moment. You’ve spent the bulk of your career as a Top 40 guy. What is it about Country that appeals to you? Well, yes, I was day-to-day on the Top 40 station, but we did launch Country in the building, and I’ve been familiar with the format for a long time. But, now is a great time for me to dive

MY TUNES: Chris Janson Warner/WAR’s Chris Janson on his most influential music: Hank Jr. is probably my favorite. Mostly the mid-eighties stuff. His music was basically all I ever heard growing up. My parents were young and rowdy, and so were their friends. I grew up around stock and sprint car racing, rodeos, sand drags and mud rallies. Hank Jr. music Chris Janson was the jam, and it still is for me. The Sex Pistols influenced me big time musically, but even more so stylistically. They really appeared to not give a damn about what anyone thought. That was extremely attractive to me as a kid, and it still is. For many of my teen years, I played in various punk bands on the side and played bass like Sid Vicious. The Georgia Satellites’ “Hands to Yourself” was the first song I learned on guitar. They’ll forever hold a key spot in my music journey. Black Crowes’ “Shake Your Money Maker” is so badass all the way around. I love that band. I can’t wait to see them again on tour. Lynyrd Skynyrd was my first concert, with ZZ Top. They’re my favorite actual band of all time. Their songs are real, and they rock. Not to mention that they also took me on my first ever tour, along with Hank Jr., years ago. I owe a lot to those guys. I listened to Hank Jr.’s Greatest Hits and Jamey Johnson’s That Lonesome Song incessantly. I love every song on each album. It’s my kind of music. An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: One of my favorite non-country songs is “The Scientist” by Coldplay.

in to country music. As I listen and dig deeper, I’m finding out how much I enjoy these young artists like Luke Combs, Dan + Shay and Morgan Wallen. To my ears, there’s a pop sensibility about some of the music that makes everything very listenable, but the truth in the storytelling is fantastic and purely country. I have a broad taste in music, and I enjoy listening to a bit of everything, but having the opportunity to focus all of my energy on one format and one team is going to make it a lot of fun to come to work every day. Honestly, I’m also excited about the community of country music. The moment I Begin Again: Bailey with Taylor was announced, I had other Swift in 2011. programmers reaching out, record labels calling and even artists sending notes. It’s very different from the Top 40 world, and it’ll take some getting used to, but I’m excited to get out to CRS and other industry events where I can network and learn and really become a part of this group of people. I’ve never felt more welcomed, and it makes it feel even more like home.
