What’s Working In Diary Land

by Scott Ward PPM methodology and an increasingly fickle audience have put programmers in a tightly focused housekeeping role. Meanwhile, more than a few diary stations exhibit market dominance despite the distractions and shrinking marketing budgets that mark our era. We talked to PDs from three such markets about the broad and specific ways they achieve success – lessons that may be applicable across the board. Primary among them: Localism and consistency. Flake News: The morning show has been crucial to a marked upsurge at KCTR (Cat Country 102.9)/Billings, MT, according to Brand Manager Johnny Vincent. “The Breakfast Flakes – Mark Wilson and Paul Mushaben – have been on Cat Country for 32 years,” Vincent says. “They are so wellentrenched, so Billings, that listeners always respond to them.” KCTR has posted remarkable gains over the past year: 8.4, 12.3, 14.0 12+ (Spring-Fall-Spring), a trend Vincent credits to getting back to the basics of station selfJohnny Vincent promotion. “We make sure the morning show is promoting forward and the rest of the day is promoting back to mornings,” he says. Service is also a pillar. “We do our big ‘Flakesgiving’ every November, giving out 15,000 meals in the community,” Vincent says. “The guys recently mobilized listeners to help a rancher rebuild miles of fence that he lost in a wildfire. We also turn to social media with the weekly Q&A session that Mark & Paul do while riding 23 floors on an elevator in town.” Once in a lifetime experiences are key to connecting with listeners. “Whether we are giving away a trip to sing onstage with Toby Keith or executing a Townsquare text-towin contest, we take ownership and let them know they only get this kind of opportunity on Cat Country,” he says. While Vincent keeps the playlist consistent year-round, before the books he “looks under the hood to ensure a good flow of music.” Jug Life: At KKJG (98.1 K-Jug)/San Luis Obispo, CA PD Pepper Daniels says local awareness begins with the well(continued on page 5)

Miranda Tour Bars No Holds

Country radio got its first look at Miranda Lambert’s Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour this weekend, and iHeartMedia/Grand Rapids, MI SVPP Dave Taft caught the local Van Andel Arena show Thursday (9/19). “I was told that the screens and production were some of the more elaborate she’s ever used, and they enhance the show without overpowering. Some shows I watch the screens more than the stage performance – not with Miranda’s setup. I really liked how she incorporated photos of her dogs when she played ‘All Kinds of Kinds.’ It was used in just the right way. “The crowd started to get loud when she sang ‘Over You,’ which led into the Pistol Annies joining her onstage and the party jumped to full swing,” Taft continues. “Coming out of a six-song set with Annies, she played ‘Gun Powder And Lead,’ then it got really crazy.” Pistol Annies and openers Elle King and Caylee Hammack, as well as background vocalist Gwen Sebastian, joined Lambert for closer “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” “It was a party,” Taft says. “Miranda brings it each and every time she hits the stage. I wish it could have been about a half hour longer. She’s to the point in her career where she’s going to miss some of your favorite songs, and I can think of four more I would have loved to hear.” As for the openers, Taft was impressed. “Caylee brought a ton of energy to the stage and really engaged the crowd,” he says. “This was my first time seeing Elle live and, though I don’t know a lot about her, her voice is amazing and so different.” Reach Taft here. –Chuck Aly

What’s Working In Diary Land (continued from page 1) established Jug brand. “We have a 14-foot jug on a trailer that is a roving landmark and has become the symbol of country music on the Central Coast,” says Daniels. “We’re ingrained!” The Jug showed up at 35 country shows and many local festivals last year. Aside from a major presence at local shows, Daniels says the veteran air staff are a major component for leading the market, going 8.7, 7.8, 8.5 12+ over the last three books. “Listeners know our people and know what they’re going to get when they turn on Pepper Daniels the radio,” he says. “Our morning man Tom Keffury has been on the air for 14 years.” Morning duo Keffury and Becky Kingman are at the center of high-touch street level promotions executed solely during the ratings period. “We do ‘Hug A Co-Worker Friday,’ where the morning team might bring lunch and hugs for everyone in an office,” Daniels says. “We do that for about 12 weeks and then pull it off.” Each awkward hug is recorded for distribution on the station’s social media accounts. KKJG also relies heavily on the packed concert schedule for promotional push during the book. “We’re not only part of these shows, we’re your ticket outlet,” he explains. Spring and Fall do bring a re-examination of the gold library and a tightening of the currents list. “I don’t want to sound like a different station, but I am a little more liberal outside of the book,” Daniels says. Sister Act: In Dayton, OH, WHKO models localism as its ratings continue to climb but also benefits by sharing a corporate parent with other local media siblings. “The key is staying true to Dayton,” says PD/morning host Nancy Wilson. “We do a lot

of charity events like Concerts For a Cause, where 100% of the proceeds go to a local charity.” A recent show provided funds for locals who are recovering from the August 4 mass shooting incident. “It’s important for our listeners to see that we are invested in the community.” WHKO has moved from Fall ‘18’s 9.8 to Nancy Wilson 10.3 this Spring and to an 11.0 in the August monthly (CDM). To keep the WHKO call letters in the public mind, the station relies on outside advertising and is in the enviable position of being able to reach the marketplace with the help of the local Cox Media Group. “There’s television,

newspaper, digital, and billboards,” Wilson explains. “We’re lucky to be able to do mutual trading to use those resources.” WHKO accesses those in-the-family advertising opportunities to promote national text-to-win contests, but Wilson says the air staff works “to make it sound like it’s the only contest of its kind.” As for music, she doesn’t make many playlist adjustments for the book. “We look for consistency and what listeners want to hear,” she says. Across all three market leading stations, hyper-locality is crucial to station’s ratings success. Each features a live, local morning show with veteran talent setting the tone, and all demonstrate a genuine commitment to the needs of their individual communities.
