WMIL’s Wolfe Hits 30

Majoring in wildlife biology at NC State lasted one semester before future iHeartMedia RSVPP & WMIL/Milwaukee PD Kerry Wolfe switched to communications. As much as the initial major might have prepared him for working with radio and record pros (see stories from them below), living at the college radio station and becoming a broadcaster clearly paid off. Wolfe celebrates 30 years at WMIL this month, and he has a few not-so-secret secrets to share about radio longevity. CA: You worked in North Carolina and Colorado springs early in your career. What brought you to Milwaukee? KW: I worked for the late Kevin O’Neal at WRNS/Greenville and WBIG/Greensboro in Kerry Wolfe North Carolina. Kevin went to Milwaukee and started calling me every couple months. After a few of those he finally made an offer I had to consider. I moved in August 1989 to be APD/MD and do middays. After about a year, Kevin got the call to go to WSM-FM/Nashville, and I got promoted to PD. What was the adjustment in going to Milwaukee? Being someone who loves the mountains, I loved Colorado Springs. Coming here, the winters were tough, but if you stay long enough, you grow fur. Your body gets used to it; you learn to cover up, and summer, spring and fall are easy to love. I got married shortly after I moved here and adopted a child. I’ve had opportunities to move to most of the top 10 markets but never did. Why not? First, it’s a great place to raise a kid. We’re right in the middle of major league sports, an hour from Chicago and – if we want that smaller trendy city – an hour from Madison. Milwaukee is the perfect size and I got to work for some great managers. At one point we had four ownership changes in a month, but I didn’t want to leave. What have the highlights been? Winning two CMA and ACM station awards is big. And I never had any regrets in hiring. Billy Greenwood’s dad – who has since passed – was our afternoon drive talent,

student of art, Hummon’s résumé extends to film. He scored Lost Boy Home and The Last Songwriter, a documentary he also co-produced, and wrote six musicals and an opera. Looking forward, he’s working on Frederick Douglass: The Making of An American Prophet with the creative team behind Motown: The Musical. We lived in Lagos, Nigeria growing up, so my older sister and I had to send away to Sears – that’s what you did in those days if you lived overseas — to get records. I remember three. After The Gold Rush from Neil Young, Carole King’s Tapestry and, my favorite, Tea For The Tillerman by Cat Stevens. Listening to that is my first recollection of going, “Man, that’s the greatest job in the world.” We all had to learn an instrument. We could pick which one, but we had to take a year of piano. At that age, around 1971, all I wanted to do was have a guitar. I took my first lessons from a lady who taught guitar through folk songs. There was a bunch of Leonard Cohen, the Beatles and a bit of Bob Marley, because when we were living in Africa, he was sort of like a god. My dad loved Johnny Cash, so my first memories of country were Cash and Glen Campbell. I realized later that what I loved about Glen was as much Jimmy Webb’s writing as Campbell’s playing and singing. When I got to Nashville, I got a publishing deal. It wasn’t a lot of money, but it was enough to live poor and not have another job. When I heard my first legitimate, big cut — “Pilgrims on the Way (Matthew’s Song)” with Michael Martin Murphey — on the radio for the first time, I was like, “I’ve made it.” Of course I hadn’t, but that was the moment I thought I had a real shot. I’m not one of those that has a bunch of titles saved. I basically spend time in my music room every morning for at least an hour or so and just play…piano, guitar, banjo and different instruments. I’ve got pads of paper everywhere. I like the feeling

of writing and scribbling, crossing out and throwing a piece of paper away. If you play instruments, the relationship between lyric and music is inseparable, and the two have to evolve together. Nashville tends to be lyric-focused, and while I love a good lyric, I’m often disappointed by the level of melody and harmony in country Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Levi (l) music. That’s what makes room in the Opry circle at the sets someone like expense of his dad. Jimmy Webb apart. He’s beautifully melodic and harmonic. If anything, I probably think more about music than lyrics. I like writing with [my son] Levi as much as anyone. He’s got that excitement that people have when they’re coming up, and he works in a way that’s illuminating for me. The guy I’ve written with through the years and been closest with is Daryl Scott. In terms of roots music, I’ve learned more from him than anyone. I got to meet Paul Simon once. I play guitar based on years of listening to Paul and his technicality. I had a teacher who taught

MY TUNES: Teddy Robb Monument/Arista’s Teddy Robb discusses his most influential music: George Strait: If I could model my career after anyone, it would be him. I’ve never heard anyone say anything other than he’s a class act. George Strait’s “Troubadour”: It’s the only song that ever made me pull my car over. Teddy Kenny Chesney: When I think that I am Robb working hard, I imagine Kenny is still out there working even harder, so I push myself more. He is the guy my radio reps talk about as the hardest worker. He can also pick a song! Kenny Chesney’s “Somewhere With You”: It’s the song I think about when setting the bar for greatness. Brooks & Dunn: Ronnie Dunn is one of my favorite singers of all time. I love the emotion he puts into every song he records. Highly-regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I’ve never listened to a Justin Bieber album. I’ve only heard singles. An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: I’ve never gotten into heavy metal. An album you played or listened to incessantly: Jason Isbell’s Southeastern. The songwriting is incredible. Next level. An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: John Moreland’s “You Don’t Care For Me Enough To Cry.” There is a lot of emotions in this one. Also, it was recorded in his garage, which I think is pretty cool! (Listen here) Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Tina Turner. American Roll, a fingerpicking style, and he’s one of the greatest at that. If you’re in the music business, you meet a lot of folks and celebrity types. It’s not always that exciting, but meeting Paul Simon was like, “Oh my god.” Going into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame is a great way to cap what has been a beautiful yet broken journey. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you’ve been chosen by your peers to be part of that community. When I first got to Nashville, I didn’t know whether I would belong, and throughout a lot of my work, I often felt, and was sometimes told, that I wasn’t that country. It was hard in some ways, but also kind of true. Now, I feel completely accepted. I found my place. And that’s a wonderful feeling. –Caitlin DeForest

A lot has to do with my longevity and the relationships that’s garnered. Promoters and clubs aren’t inclined to work with someone else because I’ve always been honest and fair with them. Then there are the artist relationships, a great company like iHeart and its resources and the iHeartCountry team doing the great work they do. What else? Local is ultra-important. Ninety-nine percent of what we do is relationships, community and charity work – really grassroots stuff. It’s the whole staff, myself included, out there getting behind causes that matter. Every time I’m at a concert, listeners come up and tell me something about a song or moment on the station that made them feel something. Advertisers come back because of the results they’re getting. We do a lot of endorsements, and we’re good at it because we’re passionate about what they want to communicate. We’re sold out 90% of the time. Do you reflect on how remarkable this run has been? I love what I do so much that I don’t think about it, except at a time like this. The staff made a video congratulating me, and it brought tears to my eyes. It’s pretty funny. My favorite part is going to a concert and hearing 25,000 people singing along at the top of their lungs to a song they heard on our radio station. Helping build careers – from the first dinner with a new artist to having them come back and play time and again – is the best. Now, a few stories from Wolfe’s colleagues: Mercury’s Charlie Dean: WMIL used to bring a bus of winners to CMA Fest, and we did a small showcase to introduce Sugarland. Kerry was so impressed we set up a promotion in Milwaukee where the station would deliver lunch to an office and Sugarland would perform. It was one of their first market visits and was a delightful event. Not everyone in the real estate office that won was impressed, though. While Sugarland were singing “Baby Girl,” a woman in a pink pantsuit literally moved [then-Sugarland member ]Kristen Hall’s guitar out of the way while she was playing in order to access the copy machine ... where she proceeded to make copies. WUSN/Chicago’s Marci Braun: On September 18, 2009, Sugarland were playing Milwaukee on my birthday. Kerry took us all out on his boat before the show, stopping first at Smokeys for camo Miller High Life cans from the same fridge they keep the worms in. As we’re cruising around the lake, we all got a little peckish for lunch, so Kerry said he was going to stop at a great tavern on the water. The restaurant’s sign didn’t utilize the best font and as we pulled toward shore I yelled to Kerry, “You’re taking us to the Erotic Dock?!” He laughed and said, “Nope, but I am taking you to the Sports Dock!” It’s been the Erotic Dock ever since. Red Light’s Chuck Swaney: For the last eight years, Shane Allen and I have had a standing dinner reservation with Kerry at his favorite joint, Eddie Martini’s during the Shano & Swano Tour. It always goes the same way. We arrive early, the staff recognize us and ask if we’re with “Mr. Wolfe.” We wait at the bar and, when Kerry walks in, they nearly line up to greet him. “How are you, Mr. Wolfe? Same table?” We get such a kick out of it. Definitely celebrity status.
