Festival Best Practices

Summertime is a prime opportunity for Country stations to exercise creativity in outdoor on-site broadcasts while promoting festivals. Country Aircheck sought out best practices and unique promotion ideas from industry pros while the format is in peak festival season. As Country LakeShake celebrated its fifth anniversary, WUSN/Chicago Dir./Promotions Brian Barnas suggested giving fans something to look forward to between concert sets. “Promote what you’re doing at your booth on-air and online before people arrive at the festival,” he says. “Have an Instagramable backdrop; everyone loves a perfect picture opportunity. Make sure your premium items relate to festival attire [like] scrunchies, sunglasses Brian Barnas and fanny packs. Text contesting is a great mechanism for festival goers. It’s quick, easy and convenient.” WMIL/Milwaukee APD/MD Quinn agrees. “One of the fun giveaways we had [at Summerfest] were bright yellow fannypacks with our logo on them courtesy of Curb Records (who had Filmore on our stage June 30),” says Quinn. “People loved them, myself Quinn included. The convenience!” Summerfest brings out one of WMIL’s favored promotions, a brainchild of PD Kerry Wolfe. “We give away two pairs of passes on-site to listeners to take a boat ride with an artist thanks to Mercury Marine,” Quinn says. “This year, some of the artists include Jordan Davis, Brothers Osborne and Lindsay Ell. It’s about a half hour long, and the artists play two or three songs acoustically and take pictures with the winners while riding along on Lake Michigan.” Watch here. (continued on page 8)

Everyone’s Favorite Uncle

As he prepares to retire Aug. 1, the ever-humble yet beloved MCA Sr. Dir./Southeast Promotion Louie Newman – known to many as “Uncle Lou” – was averse to discussing his métier, but Country Aircheck found numerous colleagues eager to share their favorite stories. Newman’s career began in 1966, and by 1984 his character was cemented on film. “When they were making ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ Rob Reiner called around to record labels in Los Angeles and said, ‘I need to see what a Louie Newman promo guy does. Can we shadow someone for our movie?’” explains former MCA VP/Promotion Van Haze. As luck would have it, Newman was selected, and Reiner’s team based the movie’s Artie Fufkin – played by Paul Shaffer – on him. “If you watch the movie, the character is very Louie-like,” jokes Haze. OFF THE RECORD: Teddy Robb Monument/Arista’s Teddy Robb puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WQMX/Akron and WGAR/Cleveland. The first time I heard myself on the radio, it felt like a dream. I had been working for that moment for so long that it Teddy Robb almost didn’t feel real. The scariest part of being on radio tour is any time I get in a car with Rusty [Sherrill]. The worst is a 3am wake-up call out with Bubba [Berry]. I wish I could have dinner with Lebron James. We’d have steak. My new single, “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You,” is a song about what might happen if you drink around an ex or someone who might make sparks fly. A little bit of liquid courage makes you think and do things you may not do otherwise. My last impulse buy out on the road was a Boston Red Sox sweater. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is listen to Hardy’s music. I wish I had written Kenny Chesney’s “Somewhere With You.” It’s one of the reasons why I love country music and songwriting. It paints an amazing picture, and I don’t know if there will ever be another song like it. My road essentials are my guitar, wallet and AirPods. My least favorite interview questions are love life questions. If I had to be stuck in any city, I’d choose Vail, CO, because of its endless amount of activities. I’m currently binge-watching This Is Us. Newman’s 25-plus-year run with MCA made him only the second Southeast regional for the imprint, and he did business with countless industry professionals along the way. “Louie was the first rep to take a chance on our station when we launched WDXB/ Birmingham nearly two decades ago,” notes PD Tom Hanrahan. “We had already known each other for years, and he knew we didn’t have reporting status, but he looked me in the eye and said, ‘I trust what you’re telling me.’”

Sometimes, though, Newman was too trusting. While visiting WKXC/Augusta, GA more than a decade ago, Mercury artist Jamey Johnson was being interviewed “on air” by PD/ afternoon host Tee Gentry when Johnson suddenly became irritated with the line of questioning and let a few choice words fly before walking out of the room. Newman apologized profusely, unaware the entire bit had been staged, mics were not live and videotape was rolling. Footage of the prank floated around YouTube for years but has since been removed. Legend has it if you ask Gentry politely, he may be able to show you exactly how it all went down. Newman was also quick to win people over, whether by sending flowers to stations’ front desk secretaries or charming company executives. “I flew to my parents’ hometown to introduce my dad to George Strait and cement my place as his favorite daughter,” shares MCA SVP/Promotion Katie Dean. “Dad is a man of few words, but Louie had him talking and laughing so much I asked my mom, ‘Who is that, and what happened to dad?’ The next morning, the first words out of dad’s mouth were, ‘The show was great, how’s Uncle Lou?’ When I called my parents to tell them I was taking the MCA job, dad just wanted to know if it was Uncle Lou’s label. Louie is family to everyone he meets.” Not only is he family, Newman was a mentor to many. “During college, I interned with Louie,” recounts EMI Nashville

The Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association will honor B.J. Thomas with the 2020 DKR Texas Music Legend Award during its 2020 Hall of Fame Weekend Feb 21-22. MY TUNES: Aaron Goodvin Davmo’s Aaron Goodvin discusses his most influential music: 1. Garth Brooks at the Wynn in Vegas: I went by myself with a ticket my mom bought me for my birthday. My parents had already seen the show, and my mom told me that I reminded her so much of Garth that I just had to see it (My mom was not biased at all!). It was Aaron the first concert I’d ever been to by myself, and Goodvin maybe that’s why I got so emotional. Watching Garth on stage, I could literally see myself up there doing the same thing. Huge turning point in my life. 2. Blake Shelton’s “Back There Again”: This is the type of song that just messes me up. Shortly after moving to Nashville, I distinctly remember coming home from a bar one night and just bawling about a breakup I was going through while listening to this song over and over and over. The way this lyric is written is why I moved to Nashville — I wanted to learn how to write songs like this one. It wasn’t a big hit for Blake, but it’s very important to me. I have to let it play whenever it randomly comes up on my playlist. 3. Kenny Chesney’s “Anything But Mine”: Once again — lyric magic. I can feel this song actually happening as I listen to it, and the characters in the story are so real and believable. I always strive for music to be real and for the listener to feel like people really lived it. And, hey! Who doesn’t love a good summer love story? Why do you think Grease was so popular? 4. Tracy Byrd’s “Keeper of the Stars”: ‘90s country! This is one of the first songs I ever learned to sing. I remember I really had a spike in my business as a wedding singer because I loved singing this one so much. It’s a song that was rangy in the ‘90s, and I loved any chance to sing my a*$ off. 5. Keith Urban’s Golden Road: This album, front to back, is so perfect. Around the time this record came out, I was really starting to take my career seriously, and Keith was the perfect role model for me. Someone who overcame so much and made a record full of smash songs, ballads and tempos, and amazing songs like “Somebody Like You,” “Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me,” and my favorite, “You’ll Think Of Me.” I love how Keith got so personal on this record. I think that’s why I feel like I can be so personal when I make records. Knowing that somebody, somewhere is going through or has gone through what I have. That’s why I make music — knowing I might reach someone like how Keith reached me. Highly-regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Anything by the Dave Matthews Band. I hope I don’t tick anyone off. My wife loves them. Maybe one day I’ll get into it. An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: NSYNC. The Backstreet Boys were better. An album you played or listened to incessantly: Bryan White’s Between Now and Forever. I think it’s the only CD I wore out when I was growing up. An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Illenium and Jon Bellion’s “Good Things Fall Apart.” (Listen here) Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.”

(continued from page 1) KIAI/Mason City, IA PD Jesse Stewart found a way to pair a ticket giveaway and a client, saying “We worked with Tree Town (now Country Thunder) to promote an area wide karaoke contest with our station and a few other Alpha Media stations in the region,” he says. “We have qualifying rounds for two months at a variety of venues, then the grand finale at a local casino. The top three win a spot to sing onstage at the festival. This has been a huge promotion for us for three years.”

Where’d I Leave The Remote? “Live broadcasts are tricky,” Stewart says. “One year, we did the morning show live from the festival. Since it was early morning and we were located inside the main festival grounds, we had no fan interaction at all. Had we done it differently, we would have set up in Jesse Stewart the campground area. Other stations in our company have had success with afternoon live broadcasts at the festival. Whatever you do, keep it simple.” KFRG/Riverside APD/MD Heather Froglear says an event like Stagecoach has to be framed on-air for the entire audience. “It’s important to remember that a lot of your audience is not at the festival,” she says. “But you want to make them feel like they are. Take those best interview snippets, pictures, etc. and paint the picture for them using all your platforms.” Here’s another nugget from Froglear: “Quick ticket attacks are crucial. Take the party out to the community with premium remotes. They draw huge traffic to a client’s business, and Heather we’re able to bring the opportunity to win these Froglear tickets to our listeners in their respective cities.” Ticket promotions need deliberate logistic planning. “Make sure to keep them simple and fun,” Stewart says. “One year, we tried to have a registration box. People signed up in droves, but when it came time to draw winners, it was chaos. We had 1,000 people show up at our tent in the festival grounds. It looked cool, but it was a nightmare to find winners. This year, we use a spin-to-win wheel and it worked out great. People won on the spot.” Final Punctuation: When the final headliner wraps at camping festivals, those staying the night are usually eager to keep the night going, which creates an opportunity for radio to be the last thing hardcore attendees remember. “K-Frog hosts a giant RV dance party in the mini-city of campers at Stagecoach,” Froglear says. “We play dance party music under a giant dome out of our Airstream.” Best part?
