It’s not “dizzle” or “D-Z-L.” Think truck and say, “diesel.” Alternative WEND/Charlotte PD Chuck “DZL” Thompson jumped at the chance to program iHeart sister WKKT (Breaking News 6/3), despite having no experience in the format whatsoever. Well, there was that one time ... CA: When did you first discover a love for radio? D: My grandfather was a Country morning show host in Festus, MO. The first time I visited his studio, there were buttons and microphones, music was booming through the speakers, DZL and the jocks were smoking like chimneys. He told me I could pick out a song for him to play, so I rummaged through and – not knowing any of the artists – picked a song based on the album cover that looked coolest. For the life of me, I can’t remember what. When my grandmother and I left, we listened to my grandfather talk-up the song, and my mind was blown. That’s when I knew I wanted to be in radio. My father, however, went to Georgia Tech and was adamant that I become an engineer. Radio has some elements of engineering, so ... we’re good, right? Despite that history, you didn’t start out in Country. What led you to other formats? Rock was the first format to give me an opportunity. My consultant later called with CHR jobs he wanted me to consider. I told him he must be mistaken – I was a Rock guy. He said if I wanted to make radio a career, I needed to work in and become good at unfamiliar formats – the more you have under your belt, the more valuable you are to a company. So I dove into the CHR world for several years before landing in Rhythmic CHR in Charlotte. Eventually, a position opened up for the Alternative Rock station, which afforded the opportunity to revisit my Rock roots. How did you decide to pursue Country programming? Growing up in Georgia, I was a Country radio P1, but as I (continued on page 4)

Be resilient, stay humble and kind, make it happen no matter what the hurdles or obstacles may be. Show up. There is no straight path, but in this industry the zigs will make a better story. And the story is everything.” KRTY/San Jose’s Julie Stevens: “Treat every artist who comes to your radio station to introduce themselves as if they were a star. Some day they might be and that small act of kindness will pay benefits for years.” Cumulus’ Charlie Cook: “This is not like other formats. You will make lifelong friends and enjoy every day at work. MY TUNES: Brandon Ratcliff Monument/Columbia’s Brandon Ratcliff discusses his most influential music: 1. Joe Bonamassa in Little Rock, AR: I’ve been to hundreds of concerts – whether I was there to see my family, some of my favorite artists/bands or playing myself – and I’ve never seen or heard a concert so well played. On a Brandon pure music level, it was damn near perfect. I’m Ratcliff not half the guitarist Joe is, but I learned something just being in the same room with the guy. 2. Fleetwood Mac: I always gravitate towards them when I fire up classic rock. Lindsey Buckingham was maybe the biggest influence on how I play the guitar. The vibe of this band, on a sonic level, heavily inspired me as a musician. 3. Stevie Wonder: Stevie and my mother are the source of my soul. His voice, writing and straight-up legendary grooves are the cornerstone of R&B for me. Stevie epitomized the artist I loved … someone who said something lyrically, but also made you feel it musically. 4. Eric Church: The Chief is the benchmark when I think of country music and everything I aspire to be as an artist. The guy consistently makes classic records and is entertainer of the year every year, if you ask me. 5. John Mayer: I was late to the party, because I was always the guy who didn’t want to like the thing everyone else liked. The first song I gave a true listen to was “In Your Atmosphere” live. I binged Battle Studies, Continuum and everything else. Ever since, he’s been one of the biggest sources of inspiration for me as a player, singer and, most of all, a songwriter. Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Lori McKenna’s The Bird & the Rifle. I’m almost ashamed to admit, but I recently found Lori’s music. I just listened to The Tree, and it was amazing! Important piece or style of music you just don’t get: This one is almost too easy, but metal. I don’t love everything about some aspects of certain genres, but the one thing I for sure don’t love is noise. And metal, to me at least, is just noise. An album you listened to incessantly: Jon Bellion’s Glory Sound Prep. Everything from his lyricism to his production, down to the album artwork is brilliant and inspiring. An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Sasha Sloan’s “Thoughts.” I love the message and the whole arrangement of the song. Sasha’s melodies are infectious. Also, “Runaway” is so, so, so good.

OFF THE RECORD: Aaron Watson Big Label’s Aaron Watson puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up in Amarillo, and my dad was always listening to the golden oldies and – of course – there was KGNC and Top 40 KQIZ. The first time I heard myself on the radio around ’99. There was a small primarily talk station in Abilene, and the owner said whenever there were unfilled advertising spots, he’d throw Aaron in some of my songs. The dial in my truck was Watson always tuned to that station, and I was so excited when my song would come on. I still get the same feeling – it never gets old. I have never gone on an official radio tour. But, we’ve always made radio a part of our tour. There have been a few instances where I’ve shown up and they don’t know who I am or think I sing a different song than I do. I have the God-given talent of turning something bad into something funny and entertaining. It might be me making fun of myself at the end of the interview, but as long as the listeners are entertained, that’s really what it’s all about. My least favorite companions on the road are my band when they’re hungry. I literally have a drawer full of snacks, crackers, candy bars … things I can give them when they get hangry. My favorite companions are my wife and kids. We have so much fun – it’s almost like a vacation. I always check out gas stations’ hat selection. My dad is big into anything with eagles and American flags. Every once in a while, you might see that USA Eagle Trucker hat that you can’t live without. Red Bandana contains 20 songs that I wrote by myself. It’s brutally honest, transparent, melodic and full of my heart and soul. It’s a musical journey from top to bottom – a true sit-downand-listen project. I don’t really care too much for when interviewers try to get political on me. There’s enough of that in the world, and you don’t need to hear my opinion. I’m not a lobbyist. I’m a country music singer, and my job is to make music with meaning that brings people joy. I’ve always loved touring in Europe. I have a list of 10 or so small European towns that I love visiting. The joy of my job is that it never gets monotonous. It’s always a new adventure in a new location. I’m an independent artist, so I tend to cater to independent bands. There’s a brother and a sister out of Texas called The Oh Hellos. I love all of their albums, but the songs on Dear Wormwood are brilliant.

focus between my station and country. I moved back to feeling like a P1 Country listener. I spent a lot of Saturday evenings on my back deck doing recreational listening. I wanted to program Country radio, but I didn’t want to take a step backwards in my career. I’m 41, have a six-year-old son and have been married for 10 years. A Country gig didn’t seem to be in the cards, but when Meg Stevens announced she was leaving, I saw the opportunity to take a risk. How did you approach the subject with management? I thought leadership probably already had someone in mind – it’s a big gig – but I walked in to [RSVP] AJ Hausknecht’s office, shut the door and said, “Hey, I have a really crazy idea. Don’t throw me out ... hear me out. I want to be the next PD for WKKT.” I explained my passion for the format and music, and that I’d spent the past few years researching and planning. What’s your mindset as you jump in? If you want somebody who’s going to continue to do things the way they have always been done in Country, don’t hire me. I’m going to bring a different level of creativity to this radio Valory’s Brantley Gilbert (l) station. Country music is great, with DZL and we have a lot of resources available to us to help curate our day-to-day music logs, but it has to be a mix of science and creativity. The data points we can look at to elevate the science aspect of programming change daily, and it’s fun to learn how to navigate that. But one of my strengths is creativity. Everything from basic imaging to events and promotions can be taken from great to exceptional. What are your priorities for the first 90 days? I am going to be evaluating everything on the station, top to bottom. I want to look at the way we are executing events, do some creative writing exercises with the staff, freshen up some imaging and work on generating creative content that works within our existing iHeartCountry brand. I would like to place a premium on the ability to connect to the lifestyle brand. Charlotte has so many great craft beer breweries, and we all know country music loves beer. We should be capitalizing on that and partnering to bring the music and the lifestyle together the way our local audience does. What excites you about the opportunity to work in Country radio? I look at the relationship country artists have with radio and fans, and I envied that being on the other side. Not to say that there weren’t great artists in other formats, but you won’t see Weezer on stage thanking Alternative Rock radio. Even though I’ve never worked in the format, this feels like coming home. And, for it to be at an iconic station like WKKT, within the iHeartCountry family, and getting to work with the staff we have in place just feels right to me. I have already started getting asked for adds, but I’ve also received so many emails from people welcoming me to the “family.” I plan to be in Nashville for CMA Awards week, and I’m looking forward to experiencing CRS, as well. There aren’t very many of us who are lucky enough to do this for a living, so we all have much more in common than not.
