Take This Job & Love It

by Sue Wilson We read a doomsday article about radio seemingly every week, the latest being a USA Today feature listing the Top 25 Worst Jobs in America. Broadcasters in general and DJs in particular came in at Nos. 8 and 7, respectively. Many of the listed jobs received their low ranking based on three factors: overall quality of the work environment, stress levels and income potential. We asked several radio pros how they feel about their jobs and (shocker!) the feedback was incredibly positive and worth adding to the conversation. Platform Choose: The most prevalent recurring theme revolved around making a difference and helping the community. No survey can fully capture what that means in Scott Donato radio’s day-to-day. “Nothing beats the high of making someone’s day a little better, and being their number one source of happiness,” says WGTY/York, PA’s OM/PD Scott Donato. “Everywhere I go, someone tells me how much we affect their life. How many people get that at their daily gig?” But wait, there’s more. KUPL/Portland’s MD/middays Danny Dwyer: “Being in radio gives me a chance and a platform to help people in my community. We Danny Dwyer can’t always see what is happening in people’s lives, but if I can provide a smile or chuckle, it may make a difference in someone’s life that moment, that day or even that week.” KFRG/Riverside’s APD/MD/middays Heather Froglear: “What other job allows you to play music for a living, meet new people every week, go to concert after concert, wear jeans on the job, and gives you a 50,000-watt microHeather phone to be the voice for local organizations Froglear who have none? Nielsen’s Winter 2019 diary ratings bore more than a few notable success stories, and two are examined below. Programmers celebrating big books can drop a line with their story here. ‘BEE Happy: Entercom WBEE/Rochester, NY remained at No. 1 in the market but experienced an 8.1-9.9 share growth from Fall 2018 to Winter 2019. VP/Programming Bob Barnett says the overall number reflects growth within key demos, as well. “WBEE had a strong performance, including No. 1 in 18-34 Adults, 25-54 Adults, 25-54 Women and nearly every meaningful daypart in our target demo,” he says. “It felt like the prevailing reaction from the team to this book was a combination of accomplishment and relief.” Relief? That seems an interesting reaction for a station firmly atop the leader board. Turns out, while the station did not launch any major Bob Barnett promotions, make staffing changes, or host

major events or concerts during the Winter book, WBEE did make key changes to the music mix. “We policed the excessive number of ‘snap tracks’ and drinking songs, and we were increasingly more selective over which new songs got added and exposed,” says Barnett. “In addition, we re-introduced a number of older gold titles back into the mix to try to achieve a better ‘mainstream’ country music mix. Through late Summer and Fall, I felt like much of the new music coming in was all beginning to sound the same – and we were missing variety and depth – so, we adjusted the gold mix.” Chatting ‘Nooga: Conversely, Entercom WUSY/Chattanooga PD Justin Cole makes no mention of a music shift in relation to his station’s rating jump, going from 9.5-11.3. Also maintaining its top ranked status, WUSY was focused around major promotions and Justin Cole

events, led by its committed staff. “Coming out of the holidays, we hit the ground running with contesting and engaging events like our Concert For A Cause in January, Hug Your Neck Tour and St. Jude Radiothon in February, and our Heartstrings for Hope St. Jude benefit show in March,” notes Cole. “All of these have a huge community element, which is always a driver for WUSY.” And in the driver’s seat ... “The credit goes to our people, plain and simple,” says Cole. “There is cohesiveness and a shared passion that motivates this group. They care about one another, the product and our listeners.” The WUSY on-air lineup has settled in following Cole’s return to middays in October. “Authenticity works,” Cole says. “If you are faking it, listeners will know. If you aren’t truly excited, listeners will know. And if you are uncomfortable, they’ll know. That has always been and always will be a focus for us.” –Monta Vaden

MY TUNES: Claire Dunn MCA’s Clare Dunn discusses her most influential music: 1. Tina Turner: She’s a trailblazer. Her electric performance. Her spirit. She could look at you and light you up. She was the first woman to do so many things – she opened the door for all of us behind her. That one woman could hold a Clare stadium in the palm of her hands. She is magic. Dunn 2. The Rolling Stones: Since Mick learned to dance from Tina, I had to put them second. I love the Stones’ music – their rock ‘n’ roll attitude, devil-may-care approach to music and live shows. Been on that wave for 60+ years – ain’t nothing wrong with that. 3. Dwight Yoakam: His sound, performance, vibe…everything in general. His music has always spoken to me. I never get tired of it and could be on a desert island with just his music and be fine. 4. Waylon Jennings: His rebel spirit. He followed his gut, made the music he believed in and said “to hell with the nay-sayers.” 5. Whitney Houston: She was such a brilliant vocalist. I think watching her sing must have been like watching Ali fight. Just brilliant and untouchable. Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I’m finally getting to listen to the Leon Bridges stuff. I put it on the back burner for a while because I wanted to be able to listen thoroughly and not just a track here, a track there. I wanted to digest all his work and I’m loving it. Important piece or style of music you just don’t get: I think being raised on a farm and listening to different kinds gave me an appreciation for all types of music. I can’t say there’s one type I don’t get into. Dance had a lot to do with that as well. I grew up dancing ballet, so I was exposed to and loved a lot of classical. With tap I learned about jazz and with hip-hop I learned about urban music. I just love music. An album you listened to incessantly: Growing up there was a huge chunk of time when it was Bob Seger’s Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets. It was the first Seger record I had and I couldn’t believe how his music stood the test of time. He inspired me to want to do that as an artist. An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: I love Dwight Yoakam’s version of “Close Up The Honky Tonks.” (Listen here) I love him (and Buck Owens) and there’s nothing I love more than when an artist completely reimagines a song. Dwight did it brilliantly. That whole album, Dwight Sings Buck, is definitely worth a listen.

Double congrats to Chase Rice, Carson James, Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines and the Broken Bow promotion staff on a second week at No. 1 with “Eyes On You.” The song is Rice’s first chart-topper; writers are Chris DeStefano, Ashley Gorley and Rice. And longnecks raised high to Luke Chase Rice Combs, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen, and the Columbia team on setting a new oneweek add total with 149 for “Beer Never Broke My Heart.” The mark surpasses the 145 adds Arista secured for Carrie Underwood’s “Smoke Break” in August of 2015. everyone? “In 26 years, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve thought my job was the worst,” Froglear says. “And it had nothing to do with the job but the circumstances and broadcasting difficult news like the San Bernardino terrorist attack and Route 91 Harvest Festival.” Adds Michaels, “While programmers can get lost sometimes in the day-to-day grind of a to-do list, I take very seriously and find satisfaction in making a connection in my local community. And it’s the same with the music. When someone says, ‘I love that new song you guys are playing’ or ‘Thanks for introducing me to...’ it means the music is making an impact.” Would he embark on a radio career now? “One-hundred percent, yes!” Says KRST & KBZU/Albuquerque’s OM/PD Kris Abrams, “There is no doubt radio is what I was meant to do ... even on the challenging days, it beats having a real job.” Froglear adds, “If you have a passion for people, and you eat, sleep and shit music, radio is where it’s at – fun, rewarding and more than a job. It’s a lifestyle.” Finally, Classic Rock KCMQ/Columbia, Kris Abrams MO’s PD/mornings Trevor Morgan offered a social media retort to USA Today and gave us permission to share an excerpt: “Tedious music scheduling, creative problem solving, early mornings, long days, late nights ... all to entertain, inform and serve our listeners. But when someone tells me that listening to our station/show turned their crappy day around, it reminds me why I got into this industry in the first place. Articles like this can distract, [so] I’ve turned my ‘To Do List’ into a ‘Get To Do List.’ This (albeit corny) change reminds me how fortunate I am. I get to work with a passionate team to come up with exciting promotions, craft compelling shows, help local businesses grow and serve my community. The challenges are real. The work is hard. But remember your why. Mine is fun.” CAC
