Perspective: A Woman’s Voice

by Sue Wilson Country’s female problem is one of those dicey subjects that are tough to talk about, at least on the record. Radio people, record people and artists discuss them with coworkers and colleagues, but no one wants to be quoted because doing so may have consequences. Countless articles have been written, many statistics have been cited and lots of theories shared on why songs by talented women don’t become hits or even get the chance to be heard. As someone who Sue Wilson programmed a Country station for a dozen years, I have hope that 2019 will look different for women, but I wonder what could really change things. After talking to a myriad of PDs, MDs and label reps – none of whom want to be quoted – a few key points emerged. Seems Obvious? Could it be that women’s voices aren’t being heard because women’s voices aren’t being heard? I know. I risk sounding like an angry female in the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp. But the truth is, women are a minority in our format, not just on the charts. Both the radio and record sides of the business are dominated by men in decision-making roles. While there are many women regionals and more than ever in National and VP roles, men are the label heads, making the call on who gets signed, how that artist fits into the landscape and which songs end up being worked to radio. At radio, too, while there are a notable few women running station groups or in a CEO role, and even more in sales departments, there are far fewer women in programming. Bentley Hits All Marks But One

Capitol’s Dierks Bentley kicked off the U.S. portion of his Burning Man Tour in Spokane, WA Jan. 31. Bentley fills the stage with high definition screens that serve as a backdrop for the show, and video production is a prominent feature. “It really was the perfect compliment to Dierks’ set,” Cotter tells Country Aircheck. “Dierks also made good use of the walkway, which extended into the pit. It made for a great up-closeand-personal experience for fans in the pit. He also had a small stage set up in the back of the arena and performed a couple songs there for the back of the room.” The overall feeling was one of inclusion for fans in any seating level. As for the set list, Bentley packs in the hits, starting with his most recent, “Burning Man,” and hitting “Somewhere On A Beach,” “I Hold On,” “Riser,” “Come A Little Closer,” “Say You Do,” “What Was I Thinkin’” and “Sideways” throughout the show. Intermixed are some of Bentley’s newer album cuts, including his forthcoming single, “Living,” which Cotter calls a highlight of the show. “The big screen served as a backdrop for photos of Dierks’ life including his family and being on the road,” says Cotter. “It was a genuine look inside, and it added to the intimacy of the performance.” Other highlights include Townes joining Bentley on stage for “Different For Girls,” as well as a game of “Stump Jon” with Pardi. Covers of George Strait’s “Heartland” and Dwight Yoakam’s “Honky Tonk Man” also included help from Pardi. Bentley’s encore included his signature “Drunk On A Plane,” and the show concluded with “Free And Easy (Down The Road I Go).” Bentley’s opening acts brought their own unique energy to the start of the show. “Hot Country Knights – enough said,” says Cotter. “They were great. It was my first time seeing Tenille Townes live, and you’d think that she’s been playing to large arenas a lot longer than she has. Pardi’s 55-minute set was a complete singalong, and no one sat down.” When Bentley heads to a city near you, Cotter says you can expect “an amazing show from star to

I just relax and enjoy the melody if I get tangled up. • An album you played incessantly: Midland’s On The Rocks. I love those boys. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: It isn’t obscure necessarily – but out of nowhere, I am loving Rosanne Cash’s “Seven Year Ache.” If someone were smart they would try and cover it. It’s so good. • One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I love that song “Heat Of The Moment” by Asia.

Again I ask, would more women be heard on the radio if more women were calling the shots? Material, Girls: For as long as I’ve been in radio (since the early ‘80s), I’ve heard that women don’t like to listen to women. It’s incredible that this argument still rears its ugly head, but it does. If true, that doesn’t explain why women dominate the pop charts. On television, The View, Oprah and Ellen connect so well. Women do relate to other women. A male PD suggests audiences may have “different expectations in Pop than Country.” A female Country air personality counters, “Sure we love party songs and hearing handsome guys sing love songs we wish were written for us, but we also want someone to tell our stories. I loved Jo Dee Messina. I related to songs by Shania and Faith and Dixie Chicks. I wish I could hear more of those kinds of songs today.” “It’s all about the song,” says another anonymous PD. “The songs coming from women to radio just aren’t of the caliber we’re getting from male artists.” That’s a tough pill to swallow for this writer. Granted, song quality is subjective, but so much of what I

hear in our format’s “slow-mo out of bro” transition is formulaic. I admit the formula is nice, a little less focused on just “a girl in a country song” and little more romantic (Russell Dickerson) or edgy (Luke Combs). But when I tune in and hear four male solo artists back-to-back singing similar songs, it’s hard to know who is who. If the songs female artists are pushing to radio aren’t working, perhaps that speaks to the first issue I addressed. “Decisions on singles come from the top, and men are at the top,” a female record rep says. “Sometimes we get asked our opinion, which is great, but I can’t count the times another single has been picked when a lot of us women in the target demo feel it should have been another song.”

Deep & Why’d: Current or recent songs from Ashley McBryde, Kacey Musgraves, Clare Dunn, Lindsay Ell, Maddie & Tae, Abby Anderson and Tenille Arts have depth, but maybe Country radio doesn’t want depth. “Some of [those songs] are great at guitar pulls, or as an album cut, but maybe not for radio,” a female MD says. A successful eight-to-10-year run of summer fun, bonfires, girls and drinking – with the occasional love song for good measure – has brought audience to the format. I hope it’s not true, but getting women back on the air may take a concerted philosophical process.

“Most of the releases from women are ballads, and ballads take longer to become familiar and test.” a PD says. “I’m not going to play a female artist that doesn’t test over a male artist that does.” My experience is similar. I had 15 years in AC before I came to Country, but I also saw that once a ballad does test (male or female), it stays on the playlist forever in the gold cateKelsea Ballerini gory. So the philosophical process may involve patience on songs by women – ballads or not. Why does radio give many songs by male artists most of a year to climb the charts, but bails out quickly on singles from women? At the same time, the argument for uptempo songs by women may have legs, considering those that have cut through including Kelsea’s “Love Me Like You Mean It” and Lauren Carly Pearce Alaina’s “Road Less Traveled.” Carly Pearce’s “Every Little Thing” was the rare exception. More Or Less: Label and radio pros agree the sheer volume of releases is an issue. Not only are songs in competition with those from other labels, often they’re in competition within their own companies. “Singles by female artists are often put on the back burner, especially if the label has songs by established artists we know will get added more easily,” Lauren Alaina one regional says. Those established artists are, of course, overwhelmingly male. “I hate to say there’s too much music, because that’s a good problem to have, but there are so many songs being released at the same time and no playlist room,” a radio pro says. “And, yes, there is a big disparity in the number of male to female songs released to radio.” A female PD says, “I want to support women, but I have to do the best thing for my radio station. Luke, Jason, Keith and Kenny will get the nod over a newer female artist. I often feel guilty about that, because I do want to support female artists.” There are far more songs by men on every PDs consideration list, which raises the stakes for women even higher. With only 25 songs on a given station’s current list and room for one or two adds a week, the odds are with the men. It will take a concerted effort, and risk, by labels to sign more and by PDs to play more. In The Affirmative: And that’s exactly what should happen. The country business needs to take affirmative action to improve

opportunities for women. On the label side, more women need deals, more singles need to be released and more promotion effort needs to be made. At radio, more playlist slots need to be given to female artists. Period. On both sides, women’s voices need more play in the decision making process. Do songs from women deserve airplay for that reason alone? Should a woman be hired even if they’re not the most qualified? In both cases, no. But a concerted effort to find qualified women to hire and to create and promote great music from women needs to be made. An investment that promotes diversity will make our business – any business – better, richer and stronger.
