NSHoF: Stop, Collaborate & Listen

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony had it all – aerospace references, nods to collaboration, tears and acceptable name-dropping. Inducted Sunday (10/28) at Nashville’s Music City Center were Ronnie Dunn, K.T. Oslin, Byron Hill, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Joe Melson. The event also honored Reba McEntire with the inaugural Career Maker Award. “Was this written in 1987 or 2018,” mused a female attendee during Brandy Clark’s interpretation of veteran songwriter/artist inductee K.T. Oslin’s “80’s Ladies.” The song, which earned Clark the first standing ovation of the night, made Oslin the first female writer to win CMA Song of the Year in 1988. Oslin’s induction by Hall of Fame songwriter Rory Bourke kicked things off with performances by Clark with Mike Reid on piano, and Runaway June, who sang “Do Ya.” “This is overwhelming,” Oslin said with tears in her eyes as she approached the podium. “I’ve never gotten to hear anybody sing my music. And to see the young ladies singing them in their way killed me.” Songwriter Mike Dekle inducted Byron Hill, saying “Every commercial airplane is equipped with an indestructible black box, built for its structural integrity, endurance and reliability. And tonight, it’s my great honor to introduce you to a black box of a songwriter.” Shawn Camp performed “Born Country,” released by Alabama in 1991, followed by Mo Pitney and wife Emily’s interpretation of the Hill co-penned “Fool Hearted Memory.” “If I were to thank everyone by (continued on page 4)

Shooting The Moon, Awards Style When WIL/St. Louis’ Bud & Broadway morning show was announced as a 2018 CMA Broadcast Personality of the Year, an unprecedented milestone was reached. The show’s “T-Wall,” aka Tom Wall aka “Tim Wall,” notched his third CMA win, this time in the Major Market category, joining his prior wins in Medium and Small Markets. He has also been nominated in the Large Market group.

As far as anyone has been able to determine, Wall is the only individual to win a CMA Broadcast Award in three different personality market categories. He’s done it in three different decades and has been nominated in four. The accomplishment has been part of a carefully orchestrated plan he’s executed to perfection over three decades. “Yeah, use that as my quote,” he laughs. “That sounds better.” More seriously he says, “As far as I’m concerned, I’ve been in the right place at the right time hanging around with really talented people.” Wall started his career and long-tenured partnership with Darren Wilhite at KKIX/Fayetteville, AR, eventually moving to mornings at WIVK/Knoxville. (In that role, he went by the on-air name “Tim Wall.”) The pair won the CMA’s Medium Market Personality honor in 1992. After Knoxville, they returned to KKIX, winning Small Market Personality in 2001. Kansas City by way of Detroit and Grand Rapids landed Wilhite & Wall as Large Market Personality finalists at WDAF in 2008. “We had no shot that year,” he admits. “One, because Gerry House was in that category and he’s so talented. Two, because he announced his retirement that year.” The common theme to his multiple wins and nominations: “They’ve all been good radio stations,” he says. “I still record a morning show with Darren that airs on about a dozen stations. From the beginning, we just clicked. At WIVK we took over for Claude Tomlinson, who did the station’s first morning show for 38 years. And we won listeners over.” With his first win in Knoxville, the news came without much fanfare. “They just told us we won and we had to sit on it for a day,” he says. “By the time we got back to KKIX, they had artists call if you won. On the big day we waited around all morning. Nobody called, so I left the studio to get something to eat. Darren poked his head out and said, ‘Get in here! Brooks & Dunn are on the phone!’” That year’s awards show delivered a great memory. “We were sitting in the audience with the artists and, back then, they had you stand up and wave on live TV,” Wall says. “So we did that, sat back down and Alabama’s Randy Owen was right in front of us. He turned around and said, ‘You boys from WIVK? Let me tell you a story. Before we were anybody we were driving through Knoxville on our way to Myrtle Beach and stopped by to introduce ourselves to Bobby Denton and give him some music. We got back in the van and about 15 minutes later Bobby is on air talking about meeting us and gives us a spin. That was the first time we ever heard ourselves on the radio. Right there in Knoxville.’ That was pretty cool.” And the awards just kept coming. At WIL, Wall writes, helps with song parodies and offers one-liners. “It sounds corny, but I get out of the car every morning and say out loud, ‘Let’s go have some

fun.’ All I ever wanted to do is be on the radio in St. Louis and, after all these years, it’s like a dream come true.” Meanwhile, he’s still hunting for that first National Personality nomination. “If you have an ‘in’ with anyone who wants more time fishing, let them know T-Wall would be happy to take over the spot,” he laughs. MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE KUZZ AM/FM & KRJK-FM PD/personality Brent Michaels discusses his most influential music: 1. Michael Jackson, HIStory Tour: It was my first big concert at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii where I grew up ... 50,000 people singing “Billie Jean” is a memory that gets ingrained in your head if you’re a music lover. 2. Elton John: The big hits are legendary, but so are many of the lesser known songs like “Burn Brent Down The Mission,” “Border Song” and “Mona Michaels Lisas And Mad Hatters.” So much of his music is what I also love about country – lyrics that tell a story combined with an unforgettable melody. 3. Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop”: This is the first song I can remember hearing a DJ perfectly talk up a song intro and nail the post. It was so cool. Shout-out to Michael W. Vince Gill & Paul Franklin’s Bakersfield: When Vince toured in support of their album of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard songs, he brought Paul to a Grammy event at the Crystal Palace and sang a few. I was in awe. 5. Jon Pardi’s California Sunrise: Jon epitomizes why I love my job. I first met him when I was a part-time air talent at KUZZ working in promotions full time. As I worked my way up, so did he. I was MD when “Head Over Boots” got added. I was PD when it hit No.1. I remember his first free show at the Crystal Palace and thought about that when 20,000 people sang three No. 1s back to him when he recently opened for Luke Bryan. Goosebumps. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I can’t name one song by Post Malone or Childish Gambino. Don’t hate me. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Metal. I did a Google search for Top Death Metal bands and No. 4 on the list was a band called “Autopsy.” • An album you listened to incessantly: Luke Combs’ This One’s For You. He’s a superstar in the making. • Obscure song everyone should listen to right now: Chris Young’s “Where I Go When I Drink” is one of the best songs I’ve heard in the last year. We may still play it in between singles – that’s how strongly I think it will test in our market. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m all about peak NSYNC and Backstreet Boys – “Bye Bye Bye,” “I Want It That Way.” A catchy hook is a catchy hook!

NSHoF: Stop, Collaborate & Listen (continued from page 1) name, we’d be here all night,” laughed Hill. “You know who you are and I know who you are and I’ll never forget you.” Hill ended his speech with a story of coming to Nashville after contacting publishers through the mail – which was “something you could do in those days” – and getting a motel room. “I pulled out the phone book, turned to the yellow pages and ... the music publisher page was torn out. So, I went to the payphone, looked in the phone book that was hanging by the chain and turned to the music publisher page, well, it was torn out. It was a fair warning.” Following dinner, all current Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame members in attendance were invited to the stage to honor the inaugural Career Maker Award winner, Reba McEntire. Layng Martine Jr., who wrote the first song Reba ever recorded, explained her impact on the profession as many of the Hall’s 40 members looked on. “Forty-two years after her first single was released, she has recorded hundreds of songs from our songwriting community, making many, many songwriters’ careers in the process,” he said. McEntire shook hands with each songwriter onstage before taking the podium. “I love to listen to demos – it’s one of my favorite things to do in life,” she said. “I’ve loved hearing what you guys created, what your masterpiece is, what your baby is that you’ve created. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of the team.” Former BMI CEO Del Bryant inducted veteran songwriter Joe Melson, “Being asked to speak on his behalf has brought about deep thought on the nature of collaboration,” Bryant said. “I think

of all the music that wouldn’t have been made if it weren’t for collaboration. We’ve always reveled in the exchange of the brilliance when lyrics, melody, production and promotion come together like lighting in a bottle, uncorked and claimed by the world.” Jesse Labelle performed “Crying” and Jamie Floyd offered “Blue Bayou,” both co-written by Melson and frequent collaborator the late Roy Orbison, whose son Wesley attended the ceremony. “I wrote the way I thought an artist should sing the song into the song,” explained Melson of his process. “There’s only one way to end a song – put the highest note at the end and knock ‘em out.” Ronnie Dunn was inducted in the songwriter/artist category by longtime friend and duo partner Kix Brooks, who told the story of how Arista President Tim DuBois put the two together. “We never even wanted to be a duo,” Brooks said. “[DuBois] bought us a cheap enchilada for lunch one day – I had never even met Ronnie – and within 10 minutes he offered us a record deal. He said, ‘If you guys will be a duo, I’m pretty sure there aren’t going to be many duos at the CMAs, so you might even win something.’” Unwitting or not, the partnership they forged led to two Grammys, 20 CMA wins, 27 ACM honors and more than 20 hits including “Neon Moon,” covered by Jon Pardi during the ceremony, and “Play Something Country,” performed by Dunn’s frequent collaborator Terry McBride, who donned a “B&D 2020” shirt. “That $1.6 billion lottery someone won the other day, I’ve just won more than that,” said Dunn of joining the Hall of Fame. “I’m proud beyond belief.”

The last induction of the night, songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, included a fart joke. Yep. “His way with words translates into his sense of humor,” laughed songwriter Gordon Kennedy. “One example is some years back when we went to Houston’s for lunch. I won’t say who, but someone ordered ribs and beans. When we returned to the studio, that someone passed gas. Wayne drew a deep breath and said, ‘Houston’s, we have a problem.’” Gabe Dixon performed the Grammy-winning “Change the World,” made famous by Eric Clapton, and the last performance of the night was Little Big Town, who sang “Boondocks,” one of the songs Kirkpatrick co-wrote for the group. After being reminded by Karen Fairchild they aren’t supposed to talk, Phillip Sweet quickly touched on how Kirkpatrick changed their lives. “He helped pull out of us what we were meaning to say with his friendship and kinship. He was a great friend before anything else and I’ll never forget that love that he gave to us. He’s forever our brother.” “It’s taken me a while to wrap my head around this, and I’ve been retracing my steps trying to figure out exactly what it was that got me here,” admitted Kirkpatrick. “What did I do? Nothing all that different than the countless incredible writers out there, but for some reason here I am, awkward and uncomfortable, trying to find the right words. Kinda how I am when I’m trying to write a song.” He wrapped up the night by thanking his family, friends, artists who cut his songs and the songwriting community, adding “this is not so much about what got me here, but who it is that got me here.” –Caitlin DeForest CAC
