Even More Medallion Moments

How could the annual Medallion Ceremony possibly yield more magic? Year after year this celebration marks the induction of a new class of Country Music Hall of Famers with jaw-dropping, throat clenching, eye-watering moments. Surely there must come a time when the walls of the CMA Theater are wrung out, right? Occasions at which superlatives fail can’t be scheduled on a calendar, can they? Can they? Sunday night (10/21) in Nashville put the query to the test. The late fiddle master Johnny Gimble, bluegrass and country singer/ songwriter/musician Ricky Skaggs and the late singer/songwriter/entertainer Dottie West were the 134th, 135th and 136th additions to the Hall. “I can’t hope to make a fiddle cry, dance and bounce like Johnny Gimble,” admitted master of ceremonies and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young. “I can’t hope to write, sing or entertain like Dottie West. I can’t do much of anything Kyle Young as well as Ricky Skaggs. These people are glorious exceptions and that is why they merit country music’s highest and most exclusive honor.” Johnny Gimble: Young introduced Gimble saying, “Johnny’s hands possessed the certainty of decades. His mind was as open as the Texas sky. His artistry adorns recordings that are essential elements in country music’s DNA.” The Time Jumpers and David Ball performed the Western Swing standard “Right Or Wrong,” perhaps best known by artists Bob Wills and George Strait. Michael Cleveland and Jeff White performed the instrumental “Gardenia Waltz.” Connie Smith and Deannie Richardson offered Smith’s “If It Ain’t Love.” In inducting Gimble, Smith told of sending a letter to radio with the song explaining how crucial the fiddle part was to the recording. “I tried to get RCA/Victor to put his name on the record,” she explained. “Back then they didn’t put musicians’ names on the records. That’s why I wrote the disc jockeys and said, ‘Pay attention because Johnny Gimble is the duet partner on this record.’” (continued on page 6)

Irish I Were At A Garth Show Neither snow nor rain nor cold of night could stay Garth Brooks, his band, crew and team, nor a full-throated 84,000-strong crowd at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, IN Saturday (10/20). Described as a blueprint for the stadium tour Brooks announced last week (CAT 10/17), the show was challenged by precipitation, temperatures in the 30s and winds that at times exceeded 50mph. CBS special and, since Brooks isn’t inclined to ask fans to attend a concert they’ve already seen on TV, changes are expected before the tour launches next spring. And so the Notre Dame show was somewhere between a template and a one-off. Uh, make that a two-off, but more on that later... Centered on the historic stadium’s field, the five-pointed “sheriff’s star” stage featured a rotating center and square superstructure of sound, lights and screens. Earlier in the week, Brooks noted the configuration might change for the tour, suggesting an eight-point mariners star as an alternative. Entering from a tunnel and down an aisle on the floor, Brooks and band opened with current single “All Day Long.” Where the late-afternoon sound check was damp and frigid, the show itself pushed away the chill with the help of abating wind, tens of thousands of warm bodies and Brooks’ megawatt performance. “I thought my job was to get it done and get out, but you people are gonna be here all night long,” Brooks roared early in the show.

Those who’ve seen him in arenas over the past several years will be familiar with most of the selections and performances. Outliers included a cover of Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” and a “Music 101” segment that dipped into Gabe Dixon’s “Live Again” and The Beatles’ “Let It Be” and “Hey Jude.” The latter were part of the game-day theme Brooks has set for the tour. Other aspects on display included a “g”-flag bearing school mascot leprechaun and cheerleaders with confetti cannons. The audience interrupted at one point, chanting, “Let’s Go Irish!” Brooks joined in the school pride by sporting a blue and gold Notre Dame logo guitar during “Callin’ Baton Rouge.” The demands of television led to several pick-ups and stops in the show, and Brooks hailed the crowd and community’s support. He also announced plans to return to the stadium as the final stop on his three-year run of the big houses. “We’re a guest,” he said. “We’re a visitor. But tonight was a frickin’ home game for us.” Once all the pick-ups and full-band performances were out of the way, Brooks remained onstage with a guitar to play requests spotted on crowd signs. “The Red Strokes,” “Ireland” and “More Than A Memory” among them. If anyone left wanting more after three hours of Garth Brooks, they were likely warmed by the knowledge that he’ll be back. –Chuck Aly

OFF THE RECORD: Dillon Carmichael Riser House’s Dillon Carmichael puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WBUL/Lexington. I heard myself on the radio for the first time when WFKY/Lexington, KY started playing my demos about five years ago. They have supported me for a long time. My favorite moment so far is hearing Dillon my radio single “Dancing Away With My Carmichael Heart” on the radio for the first time. Our head of promotion surprised me by having WGH/Norfolk play it while we were in the car traveling to our next city. It felt surreal – a moment that is hard to describe. (See the video here.) My favorite road companion is my guitar player Matt Workman. We always mess around and talk music while we’re traveling. I’m so lucky to have him on the road with me. My go-to truck stop purchase is a bottle of Fiji—it’s the best water! I’d love to have dinner with the late Ronnie Van Zant. I would order us both a shot of Woodford Reserve. My new album, Hell on an Angel, is my dream record produced by my dream producer, Dave Cobb. I will sing each song on the record for the rest of my life and enjoy every second of it. (Hear the story of how Carmichael met Cobb here.) I wouldn’t say it was an impulse buy, but I recently had to go buy clothes at the local Walmart because the airport lost my luggage. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately was backstage at one of my shows. I drove a Toyota Prius through a mud pit. It got stuck, of course, so I walked onstage covered in mud and had to play a show like that. I wish I’d written Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” It’s just the perfect song to me – lyrically, melodically, conceptually – all around one of my favorites. When I go on the road, I have to bring python skin boots, little disposable toothbrushes and a good pair of headphones. If I had to be stuck in any city other than home it’d be Milwaukee. I love beer and cheese. I’m not currently binging or watching anything; however, I really want to see the new Lynyrd Skynyrd documentary!

Brenda Lee inducted West. “I have done a lot of things in my life. This is one of the most precious, though. Dottie West, Patsy Cline and Marijohn Wilkin ... they opened their hearts, their doors and even their wallets to up-and-coming singers and songwriters.” Lee brought a number of female artists from the audience. “It’s going to take a village to induct this woman,” she said. “We loved her because she had the biggest heart and was just a good human being to everybody.” Lee drew parallels between her and West’s difficult upbringings and how each drew solace and joy from performing. “The stage was our friend,” she says. “Sometimes I felt like the stage was the only friend I had. Then I met Dottie West and I knew I had a true friend.” West’s daughter Shelly West spoke fondly of her childhood despite the demands of her mother’s career. “What I always remember when they would come home, she would double up on the love and hugs,” she said. “I ended up feeling like I was the

most special girl in the whole world.” She added, “We love our country music family. Know that you have mom’s love.” Son Dale West told of being in the studio with his mom and mimicking her saying, “Is that a take, Chet?” Meaning the session’s producer Atkins, of course. Kerry West cited her less-well-known gospel recording “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” noting, “Those lyrics embody the soul that gave you the Dottie West you do know.” Ricky Skaggs: Young told the story of five-year-old Skaggs attending a concert by bluegrass founding father Bill Monroe. Audience members aware of the child’s prodigious talent had hollered for him to be brought onstage. Monroe obliged, learning from Skaggs that his preferred instrument was the mandolin. “That’s when Mr. Monroe took off his Gibson F-5, the same instrument that now spends its days behind glass as one of this museum’s precious jewels,” Young said. “He placed it to the boy’s chest and wrapped his old leather strap around the instrument’s

body until it fit this tiny and audacious child. And he hung the whole thing around Ricky’s shoulders. King Arthur offered up Excalibur. Ricky took the F-5 and folks at the schoolhouse went wild. The rest of us wouldn’t know the significance of what happened for another 20 years when Ricky Skaggs would help bring a rev-

erent yet innovative take on Mr. Monroe’s music into the country music mainstream. He did so with Monroe’s blessing and often with Mr. Monroe’s participation.” Paying tribute to that music were Garth Brooks, Larry Cordle and mandolin player Sierra Hull performing “Highway 40 Blues.” Dierks Bentley offered “You’ve Got a Lover” before Chris Stapleton sang “Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn,” prompting Skaggs to rise from his seat to shake and kiss Stapleton’s hand. Brooks handled the induction. He spoke of his college days and wondering where country music was going. “Hollywood had a good idea where they thought it should go,” Brooks said. “But thank God, Reba McEntire and George Strait they had another opinion ... Ricky Skaggs came at the right time and those three held it down long enough until Randy Travis came along and nailed it to the floor.” Skaggs joked about his “magna carta” notes and was extremely heartfelt thanking family, friends and colleagues. “It feels like church here,” he said, marveling at the blessing he had to have played with Monroe, Lester Flatts and Earl Scruggs. “I want to thank the Lord Jesus for all he’s done for me, and he’s done a lot,” Skaggs said. “I’m so grateful to be inducted into this revered hall among these highly honored and beloved people. It’s beyond humbling to me.” Following his speech, something unprecedented happened: The medallion around Skaggs neck was removed so it would not scratch what a white-gloved curator brought to the stage, drawing an audible gasp from the audience: Monroe’s Gibson F-5 mandolin. Skaggs took the instrument in his hands, beginning a conversation that eventually led to the closing performance of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken,” aided by Brooks, the All-Star Band and all present.
