Seats & Springs: Diary Highlights

Spring 2018 has come and gone and diary-based stations are assessing their performance. From music adjustments and personnel, to contesting and promotions, Country programmers from across the nation share highlights from the book below. Scripps KFDI/Wichita OM/PD Justin Case: We had very good results. Our primary demo is Adults 25-54 and KFDI was No. 1 in all dayparts. Solid 18-34 numbers, too, and top five in every daypart including weekends. We had our free listener appreciation show in April with Josh Turner, Midland and Morgan Evans. We gave away $1,000 each day for a portion of the book. Additionally, our team works hard at being invested in the community and we were very active individually and collectively as a station. KFDI is “Wichita’s Severe Justin Case Weather Station” and we had several events during the spring where we were in continuous coverage because of storms. It is a competitive market with good broadcasters so this is quite rewarding and gives our sales team a strong story going into the second half of the year. Hall WPCV/Lakeland PD Mike James: 97.5 WPCV had a great spring book! We were No. 1 Persons 12+, P18-34, P25-54 and Women 25-54. P25-54 shares were up significantly, and I think one of the reasons revolves around a new music adjustment. This year we cut back on the number of “hiphop” flavored country singles, and our TSL improved greatly. Ideally, you want an equal balance of mainstream, traditional and pop country songs in the current mix, so we hyper-focused on that concept during the Spring. We also welcomed a new co-host, Julie K, to Mike James our morning show, and she has proven to be a great teammate alongside Roger and DJ. We use direct marketing as part of our external outreach and marry those efforts to our on-air Cash Cow contest, which we played five times each weekday between 7:20am and 3:20pm. Best Of Both Worlds: PD & Artist

There are many songs on the desk of Alpha KIAI/Mason City, IA PD/morning host Jesse Allen, but one in particular sticks out: his own. The 27-year-old moonlights as a singer-songwriter, and since the recent release of his first EP, his two occupations have increasingly become one. Country Aircheck caught up with Allen in his Mason City office to learn about his background, what led him to radio, and the benefits and drawbacks of broadcasting country music while also creating it. In The Blood: Allen’s love of entertaining Jesse Allen came early. “Singing came first and pretty much started at birth,” he says, noting that his dad was a drummer. “I’m the youngest of three kids, and the only one who caught the music bug.” By age five he was performing

regularly at a local bar. “I’d go in during the supper crowd and sing Collin Raye, George Strait and Joe Diffie songs, all the ‘90s stuff,” Allen continues. “I started playing instruments when I got into middle school, drums first, and then guitar.” Radio became an interest in college. “They needed someone to run the college radio station and I took it over as a sophomore,” Allen recalls. “It was really another outlet for me to perform and entertain. There weren’t many rules, not a lot of equipment and it was fun. I just took it as an opportunity to learn and practice.” By his senior year, Allen was balancing a two-hour, weekday-morning airshift with classes and performing music. “I didn’t have to, I just wanted to,” he recalls of his college radio show. “Now, whether anyone was listening, I don’t know, but that eventually parlayed into my first radio job here in Mason City.” Farm Team: KIAI (93.9 The Country Moose) needed a farm director, so Allen applied. “I didn’t know a lot about farming, but the guy I replaced taught me a few things,” he says. “A couple of days later I had a job offer on my hands. That was five years ago and I went on to become PD and morning host.” Growing up 20 minutes from Mason City and performing in the area regularly led to a strong understanding of the community. “It’s home,” he says. “When I crack the mic, people know me and I know them. They see me out singing and performing and also know me as the morning guy on the radio.” Allen has tried to keep those personas separate, but with limited success. “I didn’t want to be seen as using radio to further the music, or vice versa, but it’s all kind of melded together at this point,” Allen admits. “I’m a radio guy and a musician and that’s kind of the package.” Two Masters: That package has had benefits for both Allen and The Moose. “It makes the station stand out a little bit,” he suggests, pointing to his visibility within the community. OFF THE RECORD: Everette Brent Rupard and Anthony Olympia of Broken Bow’s Everette put an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WAMZ/ Louisville. (BR) My stepdad was in the military so we lived in Germany for a while. I listened to whatever he was DJ-ing on the Armed Forces Network. It was great to be able to Everette call and request songs. (AO) The first time we heard ourselves on the radio was on WUSY/Chattanooga, driving down I-40 in an RV. It was the most overwhelming feeling. You grow up listening to your heroes on the radio and hearing your voice and your song is an almost spiritual experience. (BR) (See the video here.) My funniest (and scariest) radio tour memory is when we were added to a show last minute and played in the lobby. We’re thinking people are going to be like, “Why are these guys in the lobby?” But people really enjoyed it and stuck around to get pictures. A girl whispered, “Can I bite your beard?” She actually leaned in and took a big ol’ bite. But then, of course, our radio rep Scotty O’Brien was like, “We have to take one more picture –the lighting is bad.” So she did it again. (AO) My last impulse buy was at a bar called The Dungeon in New Orleans. Think mannequins in chains. It was a little weird, but they were playing Metallica so I was happy about that. I bought hot sauce for my brother. (AO) The most redneck thing I’ve done lately was on radio tour when I walked out of our bus in just my underwear and boots, drinking a beer and greeting people. (BR) We were hanging out with radio in Louisville and someone handed me a cigar. I had a dip in at the time. Dipping and smoking a cigar at the same time is pretty redneck. (AO) I’d love to be stuck in Asheville, NC. It’s my favorite city – the vibe and the scenery. I’m going there on my honeymoon. (BR) I’d choose Morgan Hill, CA. We played at a winery there. And it’s where our label rep Layna Bunt lives, so we got to see her home. Everyone is pleasant and the weather is always perfect. I can’t wait to take my wife. (AO) Who would win one-on-one: LeBron or Jordan? Michael Jordan, no doubt. Michael’s fadeaway jump shot was flawless. And his on-ball defense was better. LeBron might be bigger, but Jordan would take it. (BR)

something to be said for resulting business relationships as well. “There have been venues that have wanted to do more with the station because I’ve played there,” Allen continues. “I’ve also been asked to come play venues because I’m with the station, so it’s gone both ways.” Allen has become even more visible with the release of his first EP I’m Steppin’ In, an independent project three years in the making. Though the single “Bad” isn’t in regular rotation, Allen has shared it with his radio audience. “We’ve actually gotten great response,” he says. “It’s probably had 30 or 40 requests in the last week over social media, website and call-ins on the morning show, so that’s encouraging.” Fair Deal: Heavy airplay isn’t in the cards just yet, though. “I’m not gonna be the guy that goes and puts my song on 50 times a week,” Allen says, noting his appreciation for how hard other artists are working to be heard. “It’s just not fair [to them].” The goal for now is to let things unfold as naturally as possible. Allen has discussed his project with management and he says they’ve been generally supportive. He’s also placed a few phone calls to fellow programmers, some of whom have tested the song for him. which of your efforts will yield positive results, but we sure have a lot to be thankful for this Spring! There are a total of five Country stations with coverage in our Metro, so WPCV has to maintain a dominant No. 1 position to effectively compete. We have live jocks in our studio 24/7, which is a tremendous asset to help us connect with our local audience. Townsquare WFFN/Tuscaloosa Brand Mgr. Dean Severance: 95.3 The Bear prowls forward with strong growth in cume across the board, especially with Women. The Steve Shannon Morning Show continues to be the No. 2 live and local morning show with nice gains in Women. We also saw bumps in afternoons and nights, and are up significantly year to year in all dayparts, growing in both cume and share. The 5K Workday Payday returned, offering chances to win up to $5,000 each workday. Dean Severance It’s been a great spring for concerts, too, with Brantley Gilbert, Chris Young and Alan Jackson coming to town, and big announcements for summer shows by Jason Aldean and Keith Urban. We had success with other promotions like the Tuscaloosa Air Show that featured the Blue Angels, the St. Jude Radiothon and flyaways to see Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley and Jason Aldean. You can hear country music on six different signals in the market, so it gets crowded at times, but the Bear continues to claw its way to the top. Alpha WFLS/Fredericksburg, VA OM Bill West: 93.3 WFLS had a huge spring, going No. 1 with double digit shares P12+, 25-49, 25-54 and 35-64, and all dayparts were No. 1 in those demos. personalities have roots that run deep in our market – connections that paid off in the book. We loaded up the station with cash contests, concert flyaways like the Lake Shake in Chicago, and concerts here and in D.C. And the music just crushed it! This project started more than a year ago. We worked with the team to understand what was working and discarded content that was feeling dated. This allowed our morning show – Steve And Jessica – to do what they do best, which is entertain our listeners. Middays with Bonnie Miller, our APD, featured unique contesting and listener interaction. Afternoons and nights focused on the listener’s experience, which includes driving home in D.C. traffic and winding down from their workday. Overall, it’s what this team worked for and we can’t wait for fall! Owens One/Bakersfield KUZZ AM & FM and KRJK PD Brent Michaels: We’re thrilled with our spring numbers which saw strong increases in Women and Men 18+. It’s truly a team

effort. Programming worked with promotions and ownership to maximize our promotional cash budget, and our jocks did a great job with live and local content. On KRJK we saw a great in-demo increase with The Bobby Bones Show that compliments the heritage on KUZZ. Overall, a great spring that we hope to carry forward into the rest of the year.
