The Voice: A Cautionary Tale

Voice therapy and vocal rest are sometimes necessary for singers. Country artists including Keith Urban, Lauren Alaina and Patty Loveless have even required surgery to correct polyps or repair burst blood vessels. But what about deejays? For radio professionals whose livelihood is centered on speaking, losing the voice is a nightmare scenario. WSM-FM/Nashville evening personality Darlas Rai lived that nightmare earlier this year. Happily healed and back on the air, Country Aircheck spoke with her and Speech-Language Pathologist Melissa Kirby about proper voice care. Rai first encountered problems after suffering a viral infection eight years ago. After that, she developed what she calls “reverse” laryngitis. “When I woke up, I couldn’t talk,” she says. “The more I talked the better my voice Darlas Rai got. By the time I went on the air at night, I had a voice. But I woke up every morning without one.” A doctor visit revealed no polyps, but Rai still struggled. “I just chalked it up to getting older and talking for a living,” she says. “But my voice just kept getting lower and lower.” DJ Unplugged: Super Bowl Sunday followed by Country Radio Seminar this year was a one-two punch. “How do you not talk Melissa Kirby at a radio convention?” she says. “You’re in loud environments. You’re in a bar, and then you’re at a show, and you’re running all over town. Meanwhile, you’re on the air every night, with all your peers and your former bosses in town. And you want to be on the air. But by Wednesday, it was over. And my voice just never came back, even after a week. I sounded like Marge Simpson.” Rai saw an ENT, who found a polyp and recommended immediate surgery. “I called my PD Charlie Cook right then and there,” she says, “and I burst into tears, because I’d been holding it in. Charlie said, ‘I’ve known several people who’ve gone through (continued on page 6)

Brew Country & The Legends Add Alpha’s WCEN “The Moose”/Saginaw, MI to the list of items that go good with beer. Country radio and suds (as well as added revenue opportunities) may seem like a natural pairing, but it’s taken some time to bring the idea for “The Moose New Country Ale” to a head. “The morning guy is a beer connoisseur and we’ve had this idea for eight or nine years,” says PD Joby Phillips. “I always loved it because without a budget for TV or bill-

Everybody knew who George Jones was, even if they weren’t country music fans. He was the troubadour of country music. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: A lot of the guys in my band love blues music. I’ve never gotten around to listening to a lot of it. • An album you listened to incessantly: Keith Whitley’s Don’t Close Your Eyes. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Lean On Me” by Bill Withers. We’re living in a world now where things are getting crazy. We’ve got so many gun issues, so much killing going on. So much hate. There needs to be more love in the world, and more respect.

boards, seeing the logo on a bunch of cans seemed like it would be great branding.” Phillips and company floated the concept again several months ago. “We have a new GM who was all for it, and three months later we had beer,” Phillips says. The station worked with Mountain Town Brewing Company in Mt. Pleasant, MI to create the ale, which is distributed locally by Fabiano Brothers. “The brewery has one called Gamblers Golden Ale that’s one of their best sellers and the recipe is similar,” Phillips says. “I’m told it tastes really good. My wife loves beer and says it tastes a bit like Bud Light with an extra flavor profile. I’m more of a vodka guy.” Personal tastes and brand names aside, however, as the station discovered when it came time to choose the name. Phillips

explains, “Our original idea was ‘Moose Brew,’ but that is copyrighted somewhere out west.” Ideally, the partnership connects on multiple levels. “For me, it’s about marketing,” Phillips says. “For sales, it’s about making money although we don’t get any portion of the proceeds from beer purchases.” The station is selling packages to venues carrying the beer, which at this point is only available in kegs. Going forward, the plan is to begin canning the beer in the fall for sale through convenience stores. In the meantime, promotion is in full swing. “[Local bars/tap rooms] can buy a package that offers a month’s worth of mentions on the station and the morning show will come out and help with a launch party,” Phillips says. “Most of these clients aren’t on air with us so if they see a result from this promotion the hope is they’ll buy commercial packages.” While bottom line impact will take some time to assess, Phillips sees immediate benefits. “WKCQ is the heritage station and we compete by doing a lot of lifestyle things they don’t – camping, hunting, that kind of stuff,” he says. “The morning show’s Jodi K. lives the lifestyle and she’s being nagged to death about when it’s coming to new places. One tap room ran out last weekend, but the brewery tells us they’ll have 150 kegs ready to go this week.” And with a big holiday on Wednesday, that’s not a moment too soo. –Chuck Aly

I pulled myself together and thought, ‘My husband’s with me, my job is okay, and now I can move forward.’” Two weeks after her March 23 procedure, Rai started talking again – tentatively, and with the help of Kirby, whom she saw preand post-surgery. She took a medical leave of absence for eight weeks. “I had prepared a blog,” she says, “because I had planned to stay in touch with my listeners.” But since corporate short-term

disability rules prohibited being on company email and social media, Rai was forced to “unplug.” “I struggled with that,” she admits. “You feel like you need to be on social media, connecting with people, but I forced myself not to and it was a much-needed break, just to focus on healing.” Habit Deforming: Rai still works with Kirby, doing daily exercises and trying to undo speaking patterns commonly heard on the radio. “Now I do shorter sentences before I take a breath,” she says, “instead of trying to read the whole copy in one breath. We do that because we’re trying to get so much information out in such a short time. I’m working on that, but it’s a tough one.

Because 26-year-old habits are hard to break.” To her fellow on-air personalities experiencing vocal problems or even needing surgery, Rai says, “My advice would be to just get it done and then get past it. It’s two weeks, and then you start getting your voice back. And then, take really good care of your voice.” And care is indeed the key. “Usually 80% of the time, [voice therapy] can prevent any kind of surgical intervention,” says Kirby. “We see tons of patients every day with voice problems and most of them never have to have surgery. It depends on a combination of factors, including what kind of lesions or bumps are on the vocal cords.” Kirby says therapy is essential to healing, even if sur-

gery is not required. And as Rai mentioned, therapy often means changing life-long behaviors. “If they don’t change what put it there in the first place, it’ll come back,” cautions Kirby. “When you need your voice to do your job, you have to make some choices.” Booze & Don’ts: Those choices include some “don’ts” – no screaming, yelling, coughing or clearing the throat. And avoid things that dry out the cords, such as caffeine, alcohol, menthol, over-the-counter sinus medications, and of course, smoking. What should deejays be doing? “Drinking lots and lots and lots of water,” says Kirby. “They also have to learn to pace their voice use. That’s the hardest thing for people in that occupation as well as other professional voice users, like teachers and preachers. If you’re a talker, which most deejays are, you have to save some for later. Deejays are usually not quiet, stay-at-home, non-life of the party individuals. They’re usually the ones you can hear coming and they’re going to carry the conversation. But you have to think like a vocal athlete – and the voice has to go to the sidelines on occasion. Usually we say if you don’t have any voice problems, you need to use it for 90 minutes and then take 10 minutes off. Then you can use it for another 90 minutes and take 10 minutes off.” Dos and don’ts are top-of-mind on the air, but just as important to remember and implement off the air. “You don’t realize

all the loud environments that you’re talking in,” says Rai. “But I would always notice the next day and then go, ‘Oh, I can’t talk over the boat motor. I can’t try to talk at a cheer competition or at little league baseball games with the kids, or in a loud bar if I go listen to a band.” Exercise Is Overrated: Unlike singers, people who talk for a living don’t really benefit from warm ups. “It’s important to warm up for singing because the blood flow pattern changes,” Kirby says. “But for talking, there’s no blood flow change. So unless you’re going to do super loud for periods of time, you don’t really need to do much of anything. “The vocal cords are muscles,” she adds. “They do have to take some breaks and they do have a threshold. They can only go for so long, and then they’re done. Using the voice at normal volume rather than louder volume is like a half-priced coupon for the voice. You get the same job done at half the cost. Loud is like lifting heavier weights.” But what about the high-energy, cranked-up-to-11 vocal style so often associated with a “radio voice”? “All that stuff is fine,” says Kirby, “but whenever you use it that loud the entire time is when you have trouble. If you’re living on loud, it’s a problem.” –Wendy Newcomer
