Jim Mantel Off His Grind

Profiled for his Country Radio Hall of Fame induction last year, WRNS/Greenville, NC morning host Jim Mantel noted he wasn’t qualified for any other job. What he is qualified for, as of the end of next month, is retirement (CAT 3/12). After stops at KNFM/ Odessa, TX, KRYS/Corpus Christi, KKBQ/Houston and WGAR/ Cleveland, Mantel landed in coastal North Carolina. He recently spoke with Country Aircheck about hanging up the cans. CA: After 35 years in radio, what now? Besides catching up on sleep, of course. JM: I’ve been getting up between 3am and 3:30am since 1984. When you’re 25 or 35, that’s easy. When you’re in your late 50s and hit 60, it’s a chore. Yeah, I’m finally going to catch up on sleep. Why now? There’s no real reason. When I took the job here from Cleveland, they had Mantel with wife Melinda concerns it was just a hold over until my next big market, but I moved here to retire. Didn’t know if it would be five years or 10, and it turned out to be seven. I’m in a position where I can retire, first of all. And to be perfectly honest, [WGAR’s] Chuck Collier died seven years ago and, since then, a lot of people who do this job or something related have passed. Last year’s Hall of Fame event hit me hard. Between the announcement and the ceremony, two of the inductees passed away – Linda Lee and Joe Wade Formicola. All of these people worked so hard and never got to enjoy retirement. Chuck and I were like brothers. He was relentless in working hard and really looking forward to it, and he never got there. So I thought, you’ve worked hard and done well for yourself. Enjoy it while you can. (continued on page 6)

Noon In The Dead Of Night

Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean kicked off his High Noon Neon Tour over the weekend with Lauren Alaina and Luke Combs. The Cumulus/Des Moines crew was on hand to give Country Aircheck a peek at one of the opening shows. “The fans were extremely receptive to the openers, especially Lauren when she performed ‘What Ifs’,” OM Chad Taylor says, adding that “Luke Combs brought down the house when he performed ‘Hurricane.’” KHKI middayer Kim Chase adds, “With two young strong acts like Lauren Alaina and Luke Combs as a part Jason Aldean of the future of country music, we are

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE BMI Sr. Dir./Corp. Comm. & Mktg. Lauren Branson discusses her most influential music: 1. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: My mother raised me on Tom Petty. She listened constantly while driving around with me in the back seat of a white 1981 Volvo. “Into the Great Wide Open” changed my fourth grade life. I took guitar lessons Lauren from his original guitarist, who took me Branson backstage at Starwood Amphitheatre (outside Nashville) on the Dogs With Wings Tour. I’ve never loved anything as much as I love Petty (besides my children, obviously). 2. Bob Dylan: Again, this was a part of my existence as a child. Dylan was always on in the background. I feel like it’s a pretty solid way to raise a kid … a steady stream of Petty, Dylan and a Volvo. 3. Townes Van Zandt: When I got into folk music as a teenager, Townes blew the doors off. 4. Gillian Welch: As a weird teenager, I obsessed over folk music. I was always fascinated that she seemed to come from another era. 5. John Prine: My mother snuck me into (Nashville club) 12th & Porter at 13 during Tin Pan South to see him. I hope I’m this cool with my own kids one day, although they’ll probably just end up loving terrible music and I’ll have to live with that. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. I clearly understand what an important piece of work this is. The guy just won a Pultizer! I, however, have not even attempted to listen to the album yet. I’m woefully behind the curve. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I’ve never really enjoyed Radiohead. This is not a popular opinion amongst people my age, but it’s true. It always makes me feel like I’m about to get murdered. • An album you listened to incessantly: Father John Misty’s Fear Fun was on constant rotation in our house for a full year and a half starting in spring 2012. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: This is not obscure, but I have been obsessively listening to the newly released original recording of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” My four-year-old knows all the words. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I am currently obsessed with Cardi B. I’m not sure it’s necessarily “on-brand” for me, but I love her. Especially her funny sound effects. OKURRRRT.

Luke is strong and relatable.” In addition to their own hits, Alaina threw in a cover of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” while Combs sang “Take It Easy” by the Eagles. Taylor says, “Luke did his cover while introducing his band, then he threw out a couple of snippets of country classics.” All on hand seemed quite impressed with Aldean’s entrance. “Jason entered by being shot out of the stage right after his band hit the first couple of notes,” Taylor says. Promotions Dir. Carina Iannuzzi adds, “The stage turns into one big screen with special video effects, black and white contrast and awesome lightning in between and above.” “Simple yet dynamic at the same time,” Chase says of the set design. “Jason is just plain solid. All three acts commanded the audience.” Taylor sums, “They complemented each other very well. Each did high-energy shows and kept the crowd guessing on what was coming next.” The High Noon Neon Tour continues this weekend in St. Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis. –Erin Duvall

(continued from page 1) What’s the plan? I started a voice-over business three years ago that’s been pretty successful but not as successful as I think it can be. It will get better as I dedicate more time to it. I also want to play a lot of golf and I’ve got a Harley that only has 5,000 miles on it. So I’ll be doing those things, in no particular order. What will you miss? The actual show. It’s still as much fun is it was 25 years ago. It’s the in between that’s become a grind. Going to bed at 8:30 or 9pm every night wears on you. I’ve always been meticulous about show prep, probably worked too hard. I had a couple PDs who said I don’t have to push that much, but I wanted to know every stone had been turned over when I started my shift. I’ll miss talking to the audience and my on-air partners. I’ll see stories that will trigger an idea and think, “Damn, wish I could use that.” My daughter [Liz Mantel] is on the air in Buffalo, so I might have a Jim Mantel slight outlet there in sending her those things, but she has her own ideas and doesn’t need mine. Are you talking about it on-air? Gotten much reaction from listeners? We’ve announced, but we’re not making a big deal about it. It’s not about me, it’s about what comes out of the speakers every morning. Nobody has said, “Thank God, it’s about time.” (laughs) So that’s good. I must be getting out at a good time. Are you reflecting on it all yet? We still have 30-some shows and still want tomorrow’s to be better than the one we did today. That feeling when you get close to vacation and you’re already on vacation – I’m trying to stave that off. Ironically, my entire family comes down for a vacation that starts the day after my last day at the station. That wasn’t the plan. It was just supposed to be a vacation, but now it’s one I don’t have to come back from. That will be different because for so many years on vacation I was thinking about that show I had to do my first day back. I do think about how incredibly lucky I’ve been, and you have to have some of that in addition to working hard. The people I’ve met and been able to work with has been fortunate, too. Meg Stevens, Clay Hunnicutt, Kevin Metheny, Ted Stecker, Dene Hallam. To be able to draw from all those people to make myself better has been a wonderful thing. Will you stay in touch? I don’t know. Don Carpenter in Detroit found himself doing a Country Oldies show. If an opportunity presents itself down the road I’m not sure if I’ll want that or not. I’m mostly thinking about the voice-over work and relaxing. [Former baseball player/manager] Mike Hargrove is my best friend. When he quit the Mariners he made a statement that he’d lost his passion for the game. I called him right away and said, “You need to find a reporter and [amend that]. You haven’t lost your love for the game, it’s what’s between the last out and the next game that you’re tired of.” I knew that was true because we’d talked about it before he made the announcement. And I now fully understand it because that’s where I am now.
